I like the detail on this one with the timing setup. If you had to work on something like this and you're not familiar with such a device, it gives you an idea where to start and what markings to look for

A job well done dave, that new gear will likely outlast the rest of the vcr.
Handy stuff the de-oxit, it's rare for the stuff to fail.
Black maker pen, been handy for me too :-D.

Thanks for this great video. I bought one in 1997. I used it for video production, it worked great for 5 or 6 years and then the tape eject stopped working, so I packed it up until I saw your video.
I ordered 2 blue gears from the company you talked about and last night I installed it. Works great agree.
    Many thanks

Best Video ever for the Blue Gear! The narration and attention to detail is really good. I really like the Timing Marks and Explaining the why and how the timing holes were used and how to use them. The camera work is so good its hard to believe the Zoom is that good. I kept hoping for more explanations and you delivered, you covered things most people just know and forget to explain to people who don't know.

Loved, Loved Loved - the bearing repair. It was a short addendum, but the history on the Brass or Copper colored Capstan motor bearing and the extremely simple fix was terrific. I was absolutely Shocked at the technique you used to fix it. Clever and well worth the time to watch the video. I've been to the Vancouver Aquarium in BC. It was great much better than the one in Monterey, California. You should do a Masters Class in VCR repairs on a separate Channel... I would love to subscribe to that too.

Its Amazing how the VCR repair videos suck you right in.. they're like watching a Fireplace.. you just can't look away. Dave does an excellent job at narrating, and the camera work is better than anywhere else on CZcams. He's got that Bob Ross kind of voice where you can just kick back and listen and know your not wasting your time.. he always says relevant and interesting things.

Did a ton of these back in the 90's. The blue gear will slip past once you take off the other post drive gear. No need to remove the cam gear unless you want to lube it.
The P5 post toxic grease must have been done already.

I replaced the blue gear, got everything working on that end. I don't hear any clicking or scraping from the piston against the capstan housing. Everything looks straight and moving smoothly inside the capstan.
However, all tapes still play slow with static picture and ocassionally will play at normal speed for anywhere from a few seconds to 5 or more minutes. When the picture and audio plays in slow motion, you can clearly see the pinch roller and other spinning roller tops spin slower.
Are some gears or pads slowing things down? Or is the capstan motor slowing down? Or both?

Hey 12voltvids, you do a great videos on how to repair a SONY VCR, it really helped me to pinpoint a several problems I had with my VCR. Great Work! I still however struggle to make my VCR work. The problem right now is after I changed the blue gear and the cam gear, which was with stripped teeth, it won't load the tape. It will accept and then spit it out... It seems the cam gear motor is not turning at all... any idea, would that be mechanical or electric problem? I measured the voltage on the motor and it seems it is OK (changing values, when tape is inserted), but problem is motor is not even trying to spin all.. even not trying to turn the cam drive gear... Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

  • @saint_and_holy_unicorn

    Very nice video!!
I bought a Sony with the same mechanism.
Unfortunately the motor of the cassette carriage is missing.
So Im searching for a substitute motor as the original is really rare.
How can I find one that won't cause any harm to the mother board?
If I measure the voltage supplied by the board and find a whatever motor that matches the supplied voltage value, will that be ok?
    Thanks a lot!!

There was some voltage fluctuations in the line and it's fixed but still the error in Denon. Tried to reset the error by pressing source and next button while inserting the power plug, then the play button as in the service manual but the error don't go away! I have this standby LED blinking red straight after the power supply. Any ideas?

Random question.. What is the metal arm with the flexible piece over the drum shaft for and why do some VCRs not have them?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 3 lety

Drum bond strap to discharge static charge. All VCRs have them, just on some it is on the bottom. Without it you would see random white and black dots running through the picture.

I have this same deck, which I bought new in the 90's. I think it has that same gear problem in the video and the cassette door when ejecting the tape doesn't open if I don't hold the door open first. I haven't used it in a good while and would like to get it serviced so I can have it as a backup unit. If there's a way you can help let me know.

looks like the vcr is from the late 80s to early 90s because todays vcrs are made so cheap they look like the one that had the faulty take up reel sensor where all the electronics are on 1 board.
the motors used in vcrs and some high end tape decks are brushless
the reason i think the wires get hung up is they are assembled from the bottom
probably because of the covid pandemic why mail order only

My "new" neighbour sent the bylaw officer my way. I can no longer allow anyone to drop off donations of equipment or pick up anything. I have to go pick stuff up now and my little sign asking for old equipment had to go.

@@12voltvids That is such a real shame. Vancouver is an Amazingly beautiful city but to hear its people can be overly concerned about what their neighbors do is disappointing. We have Makr centers here in Texas, where people can take their stuff to collect or share.. or use onsite tool benches to work on. I guess if we didn't have those we might have some of the same problems in neighborhoods.

If you run a home based business, no matter what it is the local city expects to get their tax revenue. You can do this all day every day, just buy a business license. When that business is in a residential area though the stipulation is that the home based business is an office only. No clients or customers are permitted. I have a friend that runs a salon from home and her license stipulates that it is an appointment only business and only 1 client at at time is permitted on premise. Believe it or not i am requiree to have a business license for my CZcams operation. All it takes is one dickhead neighbour that makes a phone call. These are the same ones that will rat you out if you water your lawn on the wrong day and forget to shovel snow from your driveway because you are running late for work. The type of person that you hope a wind storm drops a tree right across the roof and splits their house in 2.

My view on renting is this. You are paying someone else's mortgage. I did it for 3 years when I moved out at 22. By 25 I was tired of paying someone else's mortgage so I moved home for a few years when I first got married. Wedding gift was a few years free rent at my parents suite. Over 5 years I was able to put 60,000 in the bank, and that got me over a 50% down payment on a house. Never looked back. Put that 1000 a month I would have been giving the landlord towards a starter house. Moved in, paid it off over the next 10 years, and then rebuilt on the same lot. In today's market I could sell it for about 1.2 million right now. Problem is, anything other place will cost at least that.
