      The way he refuses to whitewash his side of the story too, it's quite confronting. It makes you wonder how you would react - can any of us be sure we wouldn't have indulged Martha's attention the way he initially did if we were feeling that deeply insecure?

    I just finished this show last night and I legit cried. I related to his struggle with his trauma as well as his sexuality journey and the confusion of wanting to be loved despite carrying around guilt and shame from past experiences but feeling weighed down and depressed. Incredible show. I really enjoyed this show and I really hope he is living a better life and has healed from his trauma and experiences.

    I’m glad he used the word “grooming” in reference to the rapes he endured. It was sincerely spot on… and with the SA he experienced at the hands of Martha early on on the show… the freezing is certainly something I have heard about before… and we see how it actually occurs in real life… very moving.

      I think the show explained perfectly why he never reported the SA. It made him feel emasculated and ashamed for going back time and time again because he thought someone saw his talent for the first time in his life and gave him actual attention. Grooming is a difficult subject. The person makes you feel comfortable, then when they take advantage of you at your most vulnerable, you feel like this is your fault and you led them on by even being there in that situation.
      Most victims are grilled on why they let something of that caliber happen to them, which is why a vast majority of assaults go unreported. What's the point when someone with a baggie of drugs in their pocket will get more time than a man who grapes you?
      He reported Martha because she threatened his family, otherwise the stalking would have probably gone on for way longer. His empathy for her was very evident as was his apathy to pretend his SA didn't really happen. These are complicated situations that not every person will relate to.
      As for the ending, the bartender did the same act of kindness as he did for Martha. It was a full circle. I rather liked it. One good thing he did for someone turned into a nightmare but he found healing from the trauma thru it.

    This show came out of left field for me and wrecked me. The whole part of his "confessional" on stage where he talks about his self-loathing and how he couldn't love Teri as much he loved hating himself, even though he loved her so very much. Oof. That part hit me like a ton of bricks and had me uncontrollably bawling for like 20 minutes. I have never heard someone describe so accurately how it feels to hate yourself so much and struggle with self-worth, and how that impacts your ability to be in a loving relationship.
    This show is just absolutely brilliant between the writing, the performances and the story.

  • @angiadcock8196
    @angiadcock8196 Před 22 dny +39

    As a victim of some pretty extreme stalking myself I can tell you it is very hard to get help. Which is just gutting in most cases because it usually takes a while for a victim to build up the courage/willpower to seek help. I’m my case, most of the officers I talked to dismissed me and said I was overreacting but there was one who genuinely seemed to want to help but there wasn’t much he could actually do. Laws in most areas are very reactive not proactive (which in some cases is good, I’m not advocating for a Minority Report situation) but there is little recourse for stalking until the stalker “goes too far” which means someone gets hurt. You don’t claim to know what the solution to that is, what changes to the law could be made to help remedy this, but surely someone smarter than me could come up with a solution. Because the laws we have now just don’t work. At least where I live. I hope it’s different for y’all. Stay safe everyone.

      Agreed! I had a stalker for over a year. When he started stealing my trash from the curb, my neighbors recorded him. It was a customer from my parents' bar, where I worked occasionally. I was 30 and he was 48. I'd previously reported the 1000s of calls, emails, surveillance and following me to the police to no avail. Also, in the US, it's not illegal to take someone's trash from the curb intended for disposal. After several months, my finally dad had a special Italian gentleman friend make the guy an offer he couldn't refuse. It seemingly worked for awhile. Sadly, I regularly "ran" into my stalker on errands, at events, at stop lights, few times a year for 14 more years...until he died. I told myself it was just coincidences because that was the only way I could continue to live somewhat normally.

    I believe this show has the potential to change the discussion around the topic „abuse“.
    I love how they show how conflicted the victim is.
    People keep throwing the word „abuse“ around…I don‘t think it‘s that easy for a victim to come to terms with calling someone an abuser, because of the shame and guilt for oneself and the empathy for the abuser that comes along with it. They represented that so well-it‘s groundbreaking. Thank you for this🙏🏻

If you are going to do that,do it all the way like this did or don't do it at all. This series went full on disturbing and never looked back.

    I saw this video, knew nothing about that show, watched it immediately, and was so impressed with it. Really complex story. I'm a licensed mental health worker so a lot of the cycles of abuse and trauma are so clearly depicted here. Him freezing is his dissociation of this trauma and I think it's so important that they put that in there because it is so common. Also, appreciated how his shame and confusion of his own self exploration was so honest as well. Really important series in adding to the conversation of abuse, trauma, grooming, and shame.

    watching this show was like watching my life. i had a stalker who gaslit me, stole my identity, robbed me blind, made me feel like I couldn't live without them, and eventually sexually abused and then tried to kill me, numerous times. it was INSANELY hard to get help from the police, so much so, that even after my abuser started assaulting me - I still felt like it wasn't enough, based on them not taking me seriously for so long, already. the situation completely broke me. it took me years to be able to function after I escaped. it was so isolating and devastating, and 16 years have passed and I still wake up shaking, sometimes and can't watch any kind of assault in tv or movies without hyperventilating. watching this show was devastating, numbing, and cathartic. i was stunned and I couldn't take my eyes off it. he did SUCH a good job at portraying the guilt we feel from NEEDING love and validation from someone... and how sick people will take that and turn it into taking everything we have until there's nothing left of us but the shell of a human they created. i want to give a hug to everyone in these comments who are sharing their similar stories

    😮That second to last episode's last scene broke me down as a man. I haven't experienced being groomed but I have been sexually abused. In my case it was a woman (older cousin). It made me fear sex with a woman for years. Didnt change my sexuality though.
    I also remember having low self esteem as a guy, never feeling good enough and wanting to be a rapper and music producer so bad because like this guy said in that scene... "If I were famous, then... "
    And fast forward to me ending up with not really a stalker but a narcissistic woman who I also happened to work with. I knew she was bad news. She was at least cute and claimed periodically over about two years of working together "I'll get you sooner or later, I always get my way." Eventually she did. Trying to escape her was the first (and only) time in my life I truly had a suicidal thought. I remember how she blowed up my phone with vm's and texts, staying in my head, gaslighting me, guilt tripping me etc, just like this woman. And like this guy, I had this weird emotional connection to her even though I simultaneously feared for my mental well being because I knew of her troubled childhood and how harsh her mother was growing up. This feeling of seeing her brokeness created this unusual emotional bond that was nearly traumatizing attempting to break away from, but finally she put her job in jeopardy and shortly afterwards, covid outbreak sent us to "work from home" positions and she'd ironically never been to my house, and that's how I finally escaped her.
    I broke down twice during the last episode, especially the end. Hearing the reference of her childhood and processing the realization that her obsession was triggered by the fact that he did something she wasn't used to, he was nice to her...

    I think it is risky to base this on real life because it raises so many questions and people think they know him and have a right to delve into his private life. This show will stalk Richard and I don't think the public will leave him alone with continous questions about the real abuser and the stalker. It has struck such a chord, the themes are worthy of exploration.

    I just finished this series in a day and I can confirm that this is a very difficult watch. Especially for survivors of SA, grooming, and psychological trauma. I absolutely loved every minute of the series. The emotions I felt going through this story was a living emotional roller coaster, going from feeling frustrated and irritated as to why Donny didn't report everything that happened to actually sympathizing with him as to why his trauma affected his decisions, coming from a person who had to go through and relive multiple traumas myself. And with Martha, I went from hating every second she'd spend making Donny's life hell to feeling the same feeling that Donny felt towards her after that final voicemail he listened to. And the story comes full circle with the barkeep telling him that his drink was free because he couldn't pay for it. Perfect ending.
    Also, some things that I liked, I really loved when he dropped his whole comedy act to just dump every bit of trauma that was building up inside of him onto the entire audience in a brilliant and vulnerable monologue. It reminded me of the scene in Pearl when she confesses to Mitsy everything that she wanted to say in a well shot and unscripted monologue. I don't know a lot of the cast members, but they all did an outstanding job portraying his personal account of the trauma and cycle of emotions he went through.
    This show is a one of a kind masterpiece and it gets my full 10/10

    I absolutely loved it, I felt so much empathy for the main character and the way he reacted towards his abuser(s) and his ways of trying to cope was very real and raw and helped me figure out stuff in my own survivor journey.
    The ending when he listens to Martha's voicemail about her seeing him as her safety really made me sad, she was clearly mentally ill and it was enforced by the abuse she endured herself in her childhood and it was probably the only truth she ever told him? And to then go to when it all goes full circle, with that bartender, it was just a gut punch. I am obviously not excusing her actions and I'm glad he got to be safe from her, but it shows another side of her, one that I think if she had gotten help at a young age, would probably have benefited her and changed things.
    It was a brilliant series, fantastic actors, I am hoping to see Jessica Gunning in more shows or movies, what a discovery!

      Hmm why do women always get the “it shows another side of her” treatment where people humanize an asshole , if it was a man who was relentlessly stalking a girl for years on end no one would even think of trying to “understand where he comes from “ 😂

    Yeah, pretty much watched the whole thing in a 24 hour period. I think that having Richard so involved in the how the show was presented or the final product was what made it as good as it was.
    Can i just say the one true hero moment of the show was how his perents responded when he told them everything. That really made me smile. That was a lot of difficult things and their response was perfect. If this part was true then they are seriously such amazing parents. Other parents should take notes

    You mentioned that the sign off sent from my iPhone was a quirk because it was an email. The real thing to note here is that message pops up when you do send the email from your phone but Martha didn't have an iPhone so she would type that message. It became more obvious when the spelling/sentence was wrong. It's not a quirk, it's delusional.

    • @spookyastronauts
      @spookyastronauts  Před 19 dny

    Hi, great review of a great show, was very impressed with it especially the acting. Now as you ask for suggestions about other shows to review, I beg you to check out & review the Australian TV show classic (even though it's only a couple years old) that is very similar (creative wise) to Baby Reindeer & that is Mr InBetween. This show is the best TV show in the last 5 years at least & it's Australian, it was created & starred Scott Ryan which was based on his movie from 2006 The Magician (again which is excellent for a first-time director). I'm sure you know the TV series, as it has been pretty popular abroad especially in the US. Mr InBetween's scenes & writing are incredible one second your laughing, then crying while you're anticipating a gruesome outcome. I've never seen a show do this so effortlessly. The only thing that comes close is Breaking Bad. So please do a review as Mr InBetween needs some love especially for how brilliant the 3 seasons are. Scott Ryan did not win 3 ACTA Awards for nothing. Trust me you'll like it. Thanks for listening & thanks for all your reviews they have been very helpful. Cheers Steve

    Really enjoyed this series, cinematically, acting and cast were great. I did see a lot of people comment and watched with friends who went mad at his decisions through out the film. Now he is reflective within the film and for anyone wondering about the psychological components to trauma it made perfect sense to him why he made the decisions he did. It can be common for trauma victims who suffer from ptsd to become aroused at things they once never thought they could and feel extreme shame and guilt and repeat these negative behavioural cycles as it reinforces the beliefs about themselves, in Richard’s case most probably helpless vulnerable and worthless. He found solace in another deeply disturbed and vulnerable individual and for this his decisions through out did make sense. Now for what i didn’t like. The last two episodes although he recognised this behaviour as unhelpful vicious cycle instead of showing an arc of discovery and empowerment he doubled down on them, the ending lacks a lot to be desired in terms of if he actually could seek help and support others to confront and change their thoughts for the better after serious trauma it ended unfortunately flat

    Half way through the series I wanted to slap and shake Donnie for constantly enabling Martha and being a coward for not simply telling her no. Then the story about his abuse came out and it all made sense. I always tell my daughter to never judge a book by its cover and that is exactly what I did. I think because Martha came on so strong and forceful in the beginning I was blinded to any possibility as to why Donnie was reacting the way he was towards her. Yes, there is disturbing subject matter and scenes, but I do believe it is important for people to see it to understand those situations, just in case themselves or someone they know are put in the same situation. But, what a FANTASTIC series! Highly recommend it.
