'Baby Reindeer' Creator Richard Gadd Reveals True Story Behind Hit New Show | This Morning

- čas přidán 16. 04. 2024
- We’re joined by Richard Gadd, who’s turned his real-life experience of being stalked into a hit TV series ‘Baby Reindeer’. Working behind the bar of a pub, he offered one female punter a free cup of tea after she claimed she couldn’t afford a drink. That single act of kindness set off a series of events which would change his life forever. The woman - ‘Martha’ - went on to send him 40,000 emails and 350 hours of voicemail while obsessively stalking him outside his home, at his workplace and at his comedy gigs. Richard joins us today to explain why he wanted to share his story and how it feels to have created Netflix’s current number-one TV series.

Richard is so incredibly brave for not only telling his story but physically acting this trauma out for the second time. I can’t even imagine how difficult that must be. We are all proud of you Richard ❤️
I finished the series the other night and had no idea that the lead was the creator for which the story was based. Unreal! Even more impressed now.
After watching it I thought it was the best ever. However now I'm not so sure.
I believe it needs a warning as could trigger people.
Not all of us go onto to self destruct, use drugs and generally destroy everyone around us, there is another path. I fear this gives licence to the negative path.
Has the male been charged? If not why not? Is he still out there roaming freely?
Gadd said in another interview that the stalker in the series is so far from the truth of the real one she wouldn't even recognise herself 🤔
I do think once the press dig deep into this, which they will, it's not as factual and heroic as he's made out.
Well said!
Couldn't agree more. What a phenomenal, genuine, strong human being. ❤
Deserves highest acting accolade. Brilliant.
I love the moment he and his father discover they share the same past.
So good they managed to get you to connect with the parents over such a short amount of episodes, they only appeared in the last two episodes but left such an impact
What a scene!
I balled like a baby 😢
It was the saddest moment and I felt it so close to my heart. It was as if my biggest horrid secret being told as well.. And I felt so so sorry for his father, balled out worse realising his wife knew and they have gone through it together
That broke me, not going to lie.
We rarely get such a nuanced portrayal of trauma and abuse, and especially about a man. Richard has helped many men and abuse victims in general by sharing his story. A brilliant series that had me gripped into binge watching it. Bravo!🎉
How did he help?
@@Renijka666by raising awareness and making it relatable to SA survivors
More ppl should tell their stories of abuse to help others open up so they can release their shame and heal.
We don’t always have to be so graphic or raw, but these topics do need to be more exposed.

I can say Baby Reindeer is one of the best dramas I've seen on Netflix for a long time- the writing, acting and editing is absolutely excellent- the way that it explores the mental health issues of both the stalker and of the victim of stalking is something unique and so compellingly acted. Wow
Absolutely I was so connected to the actors Donny, Martha and Teri. Wow!!
100 percent. It wasn't an easy watch but it was so compelling, the acting was extraordinarily good and the emotions of both stalker and stalked were so well expressed as well as the complexity of their entanglement.
yes! the acting, the natorrating, the filming style is great.
his acting as well as the actress who plays Martha was ASTOUNDING!!!
I agree, look what he said " stalker stories are usually one person's bad and the other person's good...and i wanted to get away from that " He's talking about an work of art he created...not a traumatic experience.
When I saw this I thought ‘how incredible is this actor?!’ And then I learned he WROTE IT based on his OWN EXPERIENCE I just couldn’t believe it

@@lindaflesch7303 Some of it I definitely don’t believe, like I don’t believe she has a boyfriend who’s a lawyer and a lot of it I don’t know. My gut says she lying though.
I don’t believe her either. If she had a boyfriend, she wouldn’t be stressing the fact she does and that he is a lawyer! She seemed very hung up on that. She also seems very off esp when she describes having 4 phones abdb4-6 email addresses and the need to keep things separate (ex her utility bill and another bill) Crazy!
And let’s be honest, what family and friends email eachother anymore? She’s so full of it I got ptsd watching the interview after that series
Not a 'comedy drama', more of an autobiographical psychological thriller with comedic relief. And the clear villain is the Darrien character.. not a grey area at all. Loved this miniseries and it's cathartic potential for RG and other survivors.
i agree. that was an odd thing to say
Wouldn’t Martha be considered second villain though ? Or maybe more of the antagonist
@@lizzlovesjesus He was able to show moments where Martha was an empathetic character with mental illness and where he made wrong choices to encourage Martha instead of disuading her so I think the grey area is more around the stalker/ stalked narrative not Darrien's role

Episode 4 for me is one of the finest pieces of exposition I've ever seen in film. It was also so refreshing seeing a true telling of what a person goes through, discovering their sexuality, instead of a writers imagined experience. Since it is his story, the authenticity all came through that much stronger

i’m a survivor and i’m half way through the series and i just realized a baby deer is a “fawn”.. like the trauma response 😭. when i first started watching the word was at the tip of my tongue. thank you for this. it wasn’t even the scenes that got me as much as your dialogue, trying to make sense of everything. like trying to grasp on to something, anything concrete to keep you from falling into the deep recesses of your mind. that’s when i had started reading this book on trauma responses and learned fight/flight/freeze/fawn types. the response is just as much a part of one’s story as the trauma itself
this was emotionally one of the most complex stories iver ever seen. im sure it will help a lot of people to understand the complex set of emotions that can come with abuse.
the show is so incredibly raw and honest, it's rare to find a show that tackles such a difficult story in such a vulnerable way
I have trauma that I have can't even speak about or even allude to with family and friends, not because I don't trust them, but because I find it so difficult to talk about. To be able to share this with the world and reenact it at the same time, it's incredibly brave.

Has the person who graped him ever been prosecuted?
I went to school with Richard, back then I was a spotty rather unpopular young man who was going through a lot of gender identity issues behind the scene and had also been a victim of an SA by an older man, I found Richard to be quite a mean person who was more than willing to engage in use of homophobic slurs against me and my few friends and was more than happy to be the bully to fit in with his group and not seem gay.

It’s an amazing show and I’ve never felt like a show ended so fast. This deserves so many awards. It’s such a refreshing experience.
It was an incredible series and amazing how the writer actually acted his own story. The courage to do that is awesome
The level of accountability and self reflection of his own actions which helped led to his situation should be commended, amazing show 👏
Truly heartbreaking, yet a raw and descriptive show. I commend his bravery. So many feelings and tears were exposed while watching this show.
Just binged watched. WOW an absolute raw piece. Fair play to you Richard Gadd 👏🏻 👍🏻 🙌🏻

I was mesmerized by this series! I felt ALL of the emotions, and it was very well written and acted.
I was a victim of stalking for 4 years. I am glad to see the increasing awareness and understanding of this behaviour and how it all affects the victim. Still so much more needs to change. If anyone reading this is currently experiencing the same - my advice is - keep gathering as much evidence as you can and be an absolute pain to the police - keep going, and keep making statements until they do what they suppose to do.
