I think it’s brilliant how Gadd turned his trauma into art with this series. I’ve seen mixed reactions and many folks wonder how he could’ve possibly re-lived his trauma through acting it out, but I don’t think it’s much different (in regards to re-living past trauma) than someone writing a memoir featuring personal trauma. Or participating in TED Talks, speeches, interviews, etc.
He created something that goes beyond just sharing one’s story via words. Film and TV provokes almost all of our senses. It goes beyond just reading or hearing about another’s lived experiences; It allows us to live it with them. Much like I’m sure young Gadd was at the time of the events of the show’s re-enactments, I had no idea what was coming next and was more horrified as every episode passed. The courage it took to create something that resonates with people, despite the outlandish nature of Martha’s character and even of Gadd’s comedic journey, is immeasurable. Many comments here convey that people think Gadd was unjustly portrayed in his show, but I think his portrayal of himself reflects how he was feeling about himself during the events. It’s not rare that we see ourselves drastically differently than others do, after all.
Baby Reindeer is a beautiful and tragic work of art with which Richard Gadd has so graciously allowed us to see this part of his life through his eyes. Sharing something like this with the world, especially through film, is outrageously brave. I am just in awe of his courage and I hope this project has propelled his healing journey even further along. Well done.

We're never as alone or as uniquely miserable as we sometimes feel. Other people have thought and felt the same shame, fear, and darkness you've thought and felt. For some reason, finding that out was the most comforting thing I could've discovered when going through a particularly horrible time. Life is all about reaching out and finding the people we can commiserate with, so we weather out the storm together.

It's really crazy to think that 'Martha' inadvertently saved his life because the incident forced him to face and conquer his demons. It created stronger bonds with his mom and dad as well.

I didn’t argue anything about stopping - I said any potential “trauma” is a result of his bad decisions. Everyone around him persistently tells him that he appears to enjoy the mayhem in his life, and he himself agrees (for example that he enjoys Martha being in his life as she sees him the way he wants to be seen, even though he admits she’s dangerous) - that’s HIS decision. He also ironically claims he wishes it could be him who has ruined his own life, totally oblivious that it’s his actions that put him there.

There's a saying that "comedy is tragedy plus time." It suggests that many comedians use humor as a coping mechanism to deal with their own personal struggles or hardships. So, while they may appear jovial and entertaining on stage, they may also carry a lot of sadness or pain when they're not performing. It's the irony of finding laughter in the midst of sorrow.
