When metal heats up to a certain point, it reaches its âmetal threshold frequencyâ it sheds away its electrons from the surface. This makes the surface bond with surrounding elements to close the electron shell, the blue color on the bars when you heated it is there rapid formation of copper oxide
Scrapper Max thanks for the info I was wondering why that happened.
Or you can just simply say that oxygen oxidize the ingot when he stop burning it lol
Nah he was just showing us an example of the notorious "blue ball" syndrome
Can you preserve the blue color on the copper, some way? Like if you were wanting it ti stay blue on a piece of copper artwork??
I've been looking for ways to add different patinas(?), to melted copper forms.

@@walter2990 look up blueing metals on CZcams
This reminds me of early internet. What a lovely thing.
Chaosdude341 this is so true
I'm only just now realizing that ingots/bricks of metal are traditionally shaped like trapezoidal prisms so that they could be easily ejected from molds shaped like that.
đ€Łđđ»đ€đ»đđ€đ»
What about coin moulds?
NANI?!
When the copper freezes it will shrink the tiniest amount and release from the molds very easily
Muffin pans also work.
Wait what
After watching for months I relized I wasnt subbed todays the day brother
Never saw this one before. It's kind of funny seeing how much you've improved your skills; both melting and video editing.
Here's something you might be interested in:
To remove the oxide layer perfectly, you can leave it sit in warm vinegar overnight.
It will for a blue solution and all the oxide will be in there with the waste copper. You can recycle that with 2 graphite pencil leads used as electrodes, connected to a low voltage powerbrick. The solution will go back to vinegar and all the waste copper that you would grind away will just collect on the electrode
I love you shined them up and placed the value at market price. Best video I have seen in a long time. thank you
Anyone else think the shelving at the end deserves some recognition. Just hanging in there doing work.

Cool home made treasure. I like that hard metal retirement vault. Nice vid mystery man....
I'm lining up a few copper melts to enjoy as they're the most satisfying for me - I love the visual green flame, the clean pour and the swift surface solidification.
5:05 - I'd always wondered what the temperature of metal war once it had been cast, nice to see.
Love the wire/cable striping jig!
Friend of mine was a welder. Every day when he got home from work he took two copper welding tips out of his front pocket and put them in a five gallon bucket.
He did this five days a week for THIRTY years.
He just recently cashed them in.

He must have worked for a big company. My shop would notice that after a week or so lol
I do keep my tig rod stubs though. That will add up eventually.
My grandad worked as a plumber many moons ago and would occasionally go to scrap yards for copper and they would just give it to him and he'd sell some on the side! It does indeed rack up the cash.

Am I the only one who finds copper the best looking metal around
âYou can see the copper freezingâ i couldnt help but think how weird it is for something to freeze at such a high temp! But its what is actually happening!
I think of it as solidifying but its funny to think of something so hot being frozen.
the proper term is crystalize. or solidify
And gases boil at negative 100s of degrees, it's just the preconceived notion of mainly dealing with water changing state.
James Thompson very true!
Cool vid. I've melted aluminum in my home foundry and it's rewarding but only if you're safe about it. The best source is recycled PC parts like heat sinks and scrap solid aluminum. Most think cans are the way to go. NOPE! You have to melt a ton of them and there will be a LOT of dross/slag. My #1 piece of advice is to make sure your mold has ZERO moisture on it. Like even a drop of water will prove disastrous. I only mention it because you play around with ice in the video and it may give people the wrong impression. If you pour molten metal into a mold with water in it, even a drop, it will explode. I don't say this to you because you know what you're doing, only to anyone else reading. I've seen too many videos of dudes in beach gear handling this stuff and it's scary. Temps high enough to melt metals is a serious thing and shorts and flip flops is begging for 3rd degree burns.
I agree completely đđ»
You should let the process of natural selection take its course, because anyone wearing flip flops and short shorts(hopefully not cut off jeansđđ) while they melt metal are great candidates for a Darwin DeEvolution Award. Trying to look cool and doing life threatening stuff while disregarding safety are things that don't hold together very well. Just let the kids know that you either look cool for the blooper reel/freak accident compilation vid, or be safe by handling scary stuff while wearing the apropiate gear and keeping all your fingers and toes, and your face from not melting away (its the money maker, so always protect the faceđ)
Trash? Try stolen like the rest of you "copper repurposers" and "copper recyclers" who jack wiring out of buildings when nobody is there on the weekend.
Chris Harris Ive worked on the same industrial site for 20 years and I get all my cables from my electrician friend and out of the scrap bin when Iâm allowed to go through it , I started collecting my cables probably two years before I started melting so I have a decent stockpile but unfortunately I cannot get many more cables as often as I would like as the bosses have now stopped allowing us to take themđbut I still get a tiny bit here in theređđ»
Chris Harris - This comment is one of the most ignorant ones I've ever read on youtube. (Which is really saying something!) You assume he's a thief, but there are dozens of legitimate ways to obtain scrap cable. If you'd bothered to watch any of his other videos, you'd know he works in industry and they generate scrap of this type. He's also cut apart his old storm door and melted the aluminum... you going to accuse him of ripping that off somebody's house next? Automatically thinking the worst of somebody is indicative of your attitude & mindset. =(
The owner called, they want their copper cables back.
Tim Bruijninckx đ€Łđnope
Uh yeah just gimme a minute
Believe it or not every day existing electrical systems are ripped out as required to make way for new systems. The owners of the decommissioned cables wouldnât give two squirts of p*%s about what happens to the scrap. You should have seen the Nextel cellular system decommissioning a few years back â€ïž
Tell Ea-nasir: Nanni sends the following message:
When you came, you said to me as follows : "I will give Gimil-Sin (when he comes) fine quality copper ingots." You left then but you did not do what you promised me. You put ingots which were not good before my messenger (Sit-Sin) and said: "If you want to take them, take them; if you do not want to take them, go away!"
What do you take me for, that you treat somebody like me with such contempt? I have sent as messengers gentlemen like ourselves to collect the bag with my money (deposited with you) but you have treated me with contempt by sending them back to me empty-handed several times, and that through enemy territory. Is there anyone among the merchants who trade with Telmun who has treated me in this way? You alone treat my messenger with contempt! On account of that one (trifling) mina of silver which I owe(?) you, you feel free to speak in such a way, while I have given to the palace on your behalf 1,080 pounds of copper, and umi-abum has likewise given 1,080 pounds of copper, apart from what we both have had written on a sealed tablet to be kept in the temple of Samas.
How have you treated me for that copper? You have withheld my money bag from me in enemy territory; it is now up to you to restore (my money) to me in full.
Take cognizance that (from now on) I will not accept here any copper from you that is not of fine quality. I shall (from now on) select and take the ingots individually in my own yard, and I shall exercise against you my right of rejection because you have treated me with contempt.
kgbme thatâs utter bullshit. What so people canât collect nowadays? What if youâre a smith in your free time? What if youâre a chemist?
I don't normally think of molten metal freezing, but that is exactly what is going on. Neat.

Nice job brotha đđ» why did the copper change that color when heated? Iâve never tried that before but super cool to watch! Iâll prob put up a quick copper pour in the next few weeks. If I ever finish my other projects đ€·đ»ââïž also, I read that if you stuff the crucible it could be bad and cause it to crack from expansion. đ€Have you heard that before?
ArtByAdrock nope no idea why the copper changes like that I just always meant to show it đ€·đ»ââïž. I have also heard that you should only have metal in your crucibles loosely as yes it can expand and crack but I donât really have a choice as itâll crack if I try extracting it cold. Iâll probably put aluminium in there for some aluminium bronze I recon . If it cracks it cracks it is what it is . đ€
The color change is from oxidation. As you heat up the copper it more easily binds with oxygen in the atmosphere, which will turn it black at first and then the iridescent blue colors as it builds up.
Apparently it's called "flame painting" and there are tons of videos about it. Who knew?! Not me.
Damn I honestly have never seen or heard about that đ€·đ»ââïž. Either way itâs friggen awesome to see it đđ»đđ»

Some things I'd recommend. First, don't pour over concrete. Any moisture will flash boil if you spill metal and youl get bits of molten metal and hot concrete flying everywhere. Second, while I'm jealous of the graphite ingot mold, it seems like you're waiting for it to cool more than pouring, which seems to me inefficient. I'd recommend either getting more so you can pour multiple ingots at once, or maybe simply making plaster ingot molds that are cheap and affordable to re-make for bulk ingot making.
That said, super slick setup you got. I like it.
Your camera work is good, your editing skills are GREAT!
