Meth addicts did this to the wires in my house. They got $50 in copper. I got a $10k rewire job.
They got more then 50 more like 500...and it's all free to them... I live in Flint and no body even use copper pipes anymore because it was so bad they would steal the siding off the houses in the middle of the day

We had a guy get a flash burn in an abandoned packing shed and he walked around town in agony a few weeks until infection got him. The odd thing is that I saw him standing in the oleanders along the tracks looking into the bushes. When the cops found him there that afternoon, they said he had been dead for a week. I've melted aluminum, tin, glass, and copper in my kiln (2300F max)... Iron is out of reach temp wise though (2800F), the electric heating elements would probably burn up before you got there. (Its also only 2300F fire brick, probably degrade the fire brick faster).
I'd definitely take copper ingots though, they're worth way more than either aluminum or iron.
As to bike rims... Eh, I've melted down cat food cans for aluminum, but it's aluminum extrusion alloy, worse to work with for casting than say aluminum from car transmissions, pistons, etc. Easier to buy ingots from the couple of sellers on eBay that well that (closer to a 356 aluminum casting alloy), besides which it takes 100 cat food cans (and hours to heat up and then keep adding cans in the kiln) to get enough aluminum to make a small ingot I can hold in the palm of my hand.
Had to go back and watch one I missed!! I really like the ice melt on top of the bar. I think it's one of my favorites, but I have so many favorites!!

I have been recycling extruded aluminum bike wheels, cast hubs, break lever, cranks and even frames for YEARS. Everyone here laughs at me. But they keep bringing me the bikes... ;-) Great video.

If garage sale silverware doesn't get picked up by a magnet, that'd seem like a safe enough bet to start melting it down and pouring it into small discs or bars, depending on amount accumulated between garage sale hunts or thrift shopping trips. Eventually, you'd have enough to profit if you shop smart and melt smarter.

bigstackD Casting would you be able to help me with getting hold of the tongs that are used for removing the cruciable from the furnace? I have looked everywhere and can only find the ones used for pouring. BTW I live on Vic.

I got my steel from bunnings . I think it was 25mm x 3mm x 1800mm . I just used the steel flat bar from bunnings but make sure it’s not to thick or it’ll be impossible to bend

It seems to me that the use wheels would definitely be worth way more than the aluminum bricks. I checked eBay one 27” rim without the spokes sells between $20-$40 You got less than $7 for how many rims, cost of fuel, time and effort? He’s melting aluminum which isn’t worth much to begin with. I get around 50 cents a pound for that. He’s probably wasting more fuel than he is gaining $ from the scrap but it is a cool video and with the amount of views it’s definitely worth what he’s doing. Without the video it would be a waste of money in my opinion.
Yes it’s definitely not something to do for profit I just do this as a hobby on my days off so even if it cost me a few dollars here and there I don’t mind👍🏻
