    VERY nice vid! I was scrolling through a list of brass casting videos, and very glad I picked this to watch for my evening entertainment tonight! Appreciated seeing the different 'raw materials' you used. I pick up brass when it presents itself, also copper, and would like to start casting ingots at some point. I am retiring from my job in early 2019 and will have a Lot more time for fun stuff then! Also appreciated your replies to commenters re: the various grits you used to get that bar so very perfect, the composition of the spoon you used, etc. I've collected quite a bit of brass connectors and parts, bullet casings, also "micro-scrap" plug ends, electrical components - I should weigh it out sometime, but it all adds up, in any case. Thank you for these presentations! I appreciate you!

      I never use Borax . Well I’ve maybe used it twice in my last 30 brass melts and as I’m always melting the dirtiest of the dirty scrap brass I’m forever skimming crap off aswell . I personally have never noticed a difference when melting my scrap and using Borax🤷🏻‍♂️but maybe once I start dipping into melting my clean ingots and bars I’ll try it again and maybe that’ll give me different results 🤔🤙🏻

    BigStackD - love your videos. I would like to know what brand and model of IR gun do you use as I noticed it goes above 800C (1400F+). Mine only gets that high which is fine for aluminum but not some of the higher melting point metals. I do have a bench thermometer that goes to I believe 1800F but have only got it to 1700F. I use a type K temp probe to measure the heat of the furnace. I would like to get an Ir gun like yours to measure the metal in the crucible.

    This is insanely awesome! You should stamp 24k on the top or something... =)
    Some of those brass pieces look like those I dig up metal detecting every now & then... crusty as can be and a file is the only way to tell what material they are. I dug a solid brass threaded rod about 1.5" in diameter & 12" long this past summer... just about deafened me when I detected it. Thought it was lead at first due to the weight... hit it with a file & couldn't believe it was solid brass!
    If you wipe the polished brass with shellac, it'll keep that bright finish for a long time as the finish is invisible, but prevents air from getting at and tarnishing the metal. (I do this with my lathe tools all the time - works with steel as well as copper, brass, etc.

    What is the LxWxH of your ingot mold, looks like u used a U angle and welded 2 flat pieces, on each side. Did u weld on the inside. i would like to make one for myself. Tired of using muffin pan.

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  Před 5 lety

      Yes I used steel U channel bar I cut the ends on an angle to give the gold bar look and welded some steel flat bar on the ends . The base of the mold is as follows 135mm x 60mm The top opening of the mold is 150mm x 70mm. I bent the sides of the U channel bar out before welding and all welding was done on the outside so is not to show up on the ingot. If you live in Australia I can send you some close-up photos but unfortunately if you’re in the states I can’t send pictures through my phone and I have no other social platform apart from CZcams to share things😉👍🏻

    I'm really surprised how much it actually looks like gold..

    Wont water on your steel mold make it brittle?

    • @bigstackD
      @bigstackD  Před 5 lety

      bigshotcorpse No bro it’s all good water on the steel mold will never hurt it even if it’s redhot !
      But just make sure if you pouring molten metal onto a steel mold that all the water and moisture is gone or has been heated off as moisture in a mold will give you a bad steam explosion 🙄
