Its good that you turned around. "While in Summer, the Llanberis Path is generally regarded as the easiest route up Snowdon (by us and Llanberis MRT) - this certainly isn’t the case in winter! The Llanberis path has a particularly hazardous section called the Killer Convex between Clogwyn Station and Bwlch Glas. It’s called that for good reason, there’s no hyperbole here. Three unlucky souls lost their life in one season when they slipped on this innocent looking section of the Llanberis path. The problem being that the path here is a cutting into a steep slope and disappears in deep snow, so you’re crossing a steep snow slope with a dangerous convex and steep slope beneath you. So unless you can stop yourself pretty quickly, you’ll speed up on the steepening slope until you fall over Clogwyn Coch far below. There is a cutting for the railway, but that will also be snowed in and won’t stop the fall."
I did this same ride, same time of year, with the University of Manchester Mtb club c.2007. No snow but the same strong icy wind. I remember it funneling through that tunnel, strong enough to blow us sideways while we pushed our bikes. Chain snapped partway up. Fingers too cold to operate the chain-splitter tool to mend it. Pushed up to the top, and rolled down. Ridiculously cold. Just made it back by dusk. Got away with it!
Back in the day, ( 1989/90) we rode hard tails with flex stem and rim brakes; bikes up and down the Rhyd Ddu path, such a tough ride up but soooooo much fun back down.
@@Jono_Jones1 sorry I have no clue what telegram apart from the paper strip! I am from the generation before tech so thanks 😊 but the video is prize enough, keep up the great content.
We used to go Wales between Christmas and New year... Only ever made if half way to the tunnel, same as you.. and literally crying cause my hands were so cold.. so dangerous in the snow . 2 walkers died the day after we attempted it, they got higher, but snow gave way and they fell.. . Never again.... done it couple of times in the summer, like a different world .
Super funny and great to watch. Only walked up 3.5 times (got half way once but way too much snow) but don't think I'll be biking it any time soon! We'll have to call Jono 'Iceman' now! The Iceman cometh!
Can you do a video on the precautions you've taken before attempting such a dangerous feat for your followers gratification? Maybe a list of the safety gear you took with you in case one of those many slips resulted in a broken bone or worse? Or maybe a quick walk through of who to inform before you go and what to do in the event of poor phone reception in an emergency?
Did that route but thick snow at the top made me loose the trail so I curved round walkers which resulted me going otb. I rode 3/4 way down with damaged right thumb ligaments and a left fractured upper humorous. Fuck my fingers were that cold I had to clench fists to steer bars. What an adventure though.
Yr Wyddfa. We're doing away with the name Snowdon now, so it'll just have it's welsh name which is 'Yr Wyddfa' which means the grave. It's where the giant Rhita Gawr was buried after a battle with King Arthur. (Edit) It's a myth, given that giants are mythical, lol, but that's the story behind the name.
Brilliant video. Looked loads of fun. Brings back memories of me smoking my toe on the steep road section on way to the carpark you parked in 🤣 can’t wait for the return video! I’ve not even gotten out in the snow yet this year 😩 hopefully over Christmas break 🤞
Haha looks awesome with the boys! You will have to come back in the Spring and ride the rangers trail. I've done it a couple if times on the dh rig and I'm defo up for it next year again.
Love it JJ! My brother and some pals did this years back. Same route. Not quite as much snow, we made it to the top. Hands feel better without gloves on for some strange reason. Epic thing to do! 🤘
Wow you guys are hardcore. I rode Snowdon a couple of years back in the autumn. That was tricky enough. I do love riding in snow though. Massive Kudos to you.
yeah Jono glad you survived the trip but guys are crazy I would love to Go hike a bike for the weekend Carrying a giant glory should be fun I would take all the appropriate clothing and. gear plus bottle of JD and a bottle Coke For the Journey Don’t be sorry about the lack of uploads just upload when you can we would appreciate more updates but obviously sometimes you just can’t upload as much as you would like to
Haha, BUT WHY ??? I think Edmund Hilary climbing Mount Everest did it easier than you guys doing Snowden. Guts is hurting from laughing at your descent haha, BUT, you are so entertaining and I look forward to watching your vids every time. Search for them every evening, really makes my day hearing you giggling etc, so so good. P.S. Only got up to 26deg C. here today, warmer weather on the way. Wishing you and your friends & family a Very Merry Christmas a Happy New Year and an Awesome 2023. Cheers from NZ
i went up yesterday on my Trek and i was absolutely soaked with lightning all around but coming down was a blast and i need to do it again in better conditions but started the New Year with the best climb yet, really recommend it to nutters
Been wanting to do this since they made mountain bikes legal on the peak, this is the worst time of year you could have chose but man that looks so fun haha
@@richylad Its a voluntary ban due to conflict between mtbs and walkers. We're asked not to be on any of the mountain paths between 10am-5pm May-Oct. Please please stick to these times and slow right down when anywhere near other users- walker, dogs, kids, sheep etc
Jono doing his own version of Megavalanche is the best thing you'll watch these Christmas
To the belly, you absolute madmen
Its good that you turned around.

If ever there was a time for studded tyres - this was probably it.

Those Flylow gloves are THE BEST!!!! try some carbide studded knobbies (perhaps for next time?) - those ice fall-downs hurt a lot.

Come back with spiked tyres and an EEEB. Call "Snowdon redemption".

Craziness, but hats off to you for having a go. It’s one of the things on my list to do but I’ll be doing it in a lot more favourable conditions

Absolutely loved this 🤣

Its the essence of mountain biking for me 😊
Just Snowdon or Wyddfa, no need for the “mount” prefix 😉. Cracking ride👍
This is awesome! I had no idea you could ride around Snowden.. I’m surprised they aren’t super anti-bike! Something to add to my bucket list 👍🏼
There is an agreement not to ride it during the busiest hours, especially from May onwards. Off the mountain by 10am.
Like megavalanche but welsh… insane, wish I’d been there
Rainbow drops is S-tier good choice.
fellow Tasmanian here can confirm weather conditions
brutal!
fantastic -
One of the funniest videos I’ve ever seen on the internet
You need merch with "is it a good idea? No. Am I going to do it anyway Yeahhhh" on it
Gnarly bro climbed it many times in the winter but never rode it. Looks epic
Great video. It’s winter riding

Been wanting to do this since they made mountain bikes legal on the peak, this is the worst time of year you could have chose but man that looks so fun haha
I rode it back in 89 or 90. Before bans were even thought about.
I think I read there are recommended times for mtb’s to ride Snowdon, I think it may have been 06:00 - 10:00, does that sound right ?
