NEW VIDEO EVERY WEDNESDAY! - Auta a dopravní prostředky
You didn't weigh the Target Receipt...oh Major Fail. Do you even Weight Reduce, Bro?!?
But I had great savings at Target.
Engineering Explained lol! You rock, brother.
Engineering Explained On coolant?
You are one of the few that show how to really make modifications. And showing the difference. Thanks from a Swedish mechanic/technician and huge car enthusiast. Sorry for the poor english as it´s not my main language. But i´m sure you get what i mean.
+Joakim Kristiansen Check out Mighty Car Mods
Look for an abandoned parking lot. A place big enough to let you drive in a circle and test your lateral g's. That would be a good way to see the difference in weight loss.
Also braking distance. If you know someone with a really long driveway, bust out some sidewalk chalk, draw some lines, and test your stopping distances.
Turn this into a race AND science project! : )
I will have test results soon! I only tested acceleration so far.
should have let it get stolen again, they could have done all that for you
Holyshit lol
They probably would have left the water in the trunk. $#*(%#s.
did you weigh that target receipt? LOL
Hahaha
(for anyone using metric system: 83.8lbs is about 38kg)
I've wanted a project integra for a while, so I'm living vicariously through these videos. I like your detailed, numbers based approach to tuning. Keep it up!
Great work so far! Can't wait for the final outcome.
Do you plan on stripping the whole interior for more weight savings?
Nice.. I remembered I was one of the many people who asked for a weight reduction on the integra so I'm really glad that this video exists.
Glad to see it's coming along! And yes plz do a video of each result separately so we can truly see what each mod does!
Absolutely love this channel! Found you by trying to figure out what 2 way LSD is and now I've watched tons of your videos! Simple clear and really useful! Amazing channel! 10/10 love it.
Dorifto Kingu! Thank you!
Take out the entire dash, that will save a lot of weight.
So will taking off the doors and the rest of the body, because race car.
Well if you can get used to straddling just an engine you will see huge gains in acceleration. You don't need all that other junk that the manufacturer tries to sell you. Seats... Ha!
+TheCowGoesMoo o no that will hurt the areo
Some rude people. Excellent restraint there. :)
cool vid its almost like you've "added" about 5hp due to its lesser inertia, by removing about 80 pounds of unneeded weight, not to mention less stress on the breaks, and slightly better handling, however removing too much weight can cause unbalancing especially in the rear of a tegra but you still have a bit to remove before that point. thanks for the video love ur channel keep it up!
This channel is single handedly destroying poser culture from the car scene! Glad that people can watch videos on this and learn something! All my forum postings put people to sleep so this is great! Keep the videos coming!
vidurc Thanks for watching, trying to have a better educated car culture out there, there's a lot of bad info on forums (and good).
This was great! Can't wait for more!
mann this is exciting!! Can't wait to see how the car will turn out to be at the end of all this.
This a very good video from a fuel economy point of view (not just for short track days).
If the centre console is anything like the 90s accord I changed a stereo on a while back, it should be very simple to remove.
If there was some way you could create the weight removed in ballast and move it around the car to compare handling as the balance shifts, that would be cool.
Great video!
Would be cool to play around with weight distributed in different locations.
Almost 90 lbs not bad cant wait for the next video
Great Project...please keep it up.
Great vid. Do ur suspension - brakes- turbo
Are you uploading part 2 today
any videos on weight reduction with tools. removing unessentials from car and such?
Jason, this is exactly what I did to remove weight from my Camry, by removing the spare tire :)
Think you could do a video explaining mil-spec wire harnesses some time that would be awesome. Great videos btw!!
I managed to pull about 450lbs from a DA9 Integra but the car was stolen before I finished my build :( also weight reduction improves acceleration, braking, handling, and fuel economy
how about an aftermarket clutch and lighter flywheel?
Can you do a video on Formula 1's FRIC suspension and how it works? I'd be interested to know how it works, and just how it works with normal suspension. Thanks!
Thanks for the great Videos !
Can u do a video explaining downpipes? I saw a video on a guy keeping off the throttle cause "the downpipes are down" what are downpipes and what do they do?
I'm thinking about removing my back seats from my 06 rsx .. thoughts?
Don't let anyone discourage you, next go for radio, aftermarket seats, weld roof if you have a sunroof, go for your ac and abs system if you'd like, oddessey pc680 battery, next video please get into parasitic draws, so stuff like power steering and such. Better wheels can get you better unsprung weight, roof liner, radio, actual carpeting, rear trim and interior, sound deadening.... The list goes on :) good luck!!
Could you do a video on rotational weight? Ive heard that loosing 10 pounds in the wheels is equal to something like 70 pounds in the car. I just recently went from 14in steelies to 15x7 and 15x8 aero wheels and have noticed a huge loss in acceleration and mpg's. I knew it was coming, but didn't think the change would be as substantial as it is. Thanks!
Your cat might actually become more fuel efficient because you are going farther with the bigger wheels and beaten because you will go faster because once again you travel farther as the circle gets bigger.... (Referring to the wheels) and more likely to get a speeding ticket doing so
I have a couple videos on the subject, both labeled as "rotational inertia" which I'd recommend checking out.
Rotational Inertia - Equivalent Mass
Engineering Explained if mass isn't a factor, would there be a difference in breaking distance between a smaller and larger tire
Roger Toledo Yes, you want the mass located towards the center of the tire. You'll enjoy this one: Rotational Inertia - Effects on Horsepower
Wow, of course you already did videos on the subject lol. idk how they slipped by me. Thanks again!
With the replacement intake and the removel of both mufflers and the exhaust resonator I've removed around 60 lbs
How where ive probably put half of that back in with the subwoofer and the bigger sway bars
What kind of race are you going to take part in?
I have 1 97 rs what are the best tie front upper control arms
What was the weight of the spare tire, jack, and tools? Thx
Is this going to be a track only car? If so might as well remove the air conditioner, that alone would probably around 40-45 lbs.
then you have room for a turbo too!
You just gave me an idea !
Would having those speakers on the scale mess with the result of their weight since they are magnetic?
Make This A Playlist On How You Bild Up Your Integra. Like Your Vids Man Very Helpful
Build*
The weight all came out of the back, is there nothing to remove up front?
is it legal to drive without those seats ?
Engineering Explained You make AWESOME videos man. I learnt a load of mechanical parts of the car thanks to your hard work on CZcams.
I was wondering if its worth considering where to strip weight out of the car particularly in this case where your Integra is front-biased by being an FF platform? If you are looking to other areas of weight reduction and depending on how much your budget is, it would be interesting to see you get carbon body panels, carbon door mirrors by craft square, lighter battery, lighter clutch & flywheel (but it may be harder to drive in town speeds), lighter exhausts, bride or recaro seats and especially reducing rotational mass from lightweight wheels, crank/alternator pulleys and carbon fibre driveshafts/propeller shafts. I'm not sure how accessible it is for you to get these parts in USA but well known Honda tuning companies are Spoon, J's Racing, Mugen, Powerhouse Amuse and many more! Sorry for the long comment but I hope you found some of these things useful :)
when i had a 1998 mitsubishi mirage hatch i did all that but went as far as to remove all the rear intior pannels and gutted all the inner workings of the back door not incliding the latch getting about 130 out of it
make a video on craiglist car buying
I have a question
What would happen if I put 950cc injectors on a stock 1997 Chevrolet Z24 cavalier I say stock because engine internals are stock.
Please help me.
being a front wheel drive car. Wouldn't keeping the spare tire help with a bit of weight distribution?
I think the positives outweight the negatives, but yes it does alter the distribution. Hoping to mess with the front end a bit more in the future.
Haha wow, I actually learned how to take out my back seats, something I didn't know, thanks!
We like the people aware of the detail !
Since watching the your recent video on "Let's Build a Race Car" when will the installment of the other parts occur ?
Haha yeahh, I've got a lot of work to do and need to catch up. Hoping to get more involved with this in about a month or so. Keep putting pressure on me!
haha does integra taillights let water in too? me Eg's tails do the same thing
A/C delete, bucket front seats, racing steering wheel, rear wiper removal, roof carpeting
You looking to sell the interior??
Great videos, you should do some work on the front now too to try to balance out everything. What university are you in or did you go to?
How was the mpg??
Weight of the target receipt?
!!!!!AWESOME VIDEO !!!! , how much is the OEM curb weight of your car , 83lbs off thats pretty good for a start , I wish someone would a video like this for Honda Preludes 1997-2001
2639 lbs. according to edmunds.
***** so 2556 lbs with his stage 1 weight savings , so much lighter then most sport compacts now a days , cant wait for the other stages
***** I bet he can get this integra down to 2300 or so.
*****
had to delete my other post, wrong account lol, from the chump car integra team I was talking to at a local autox, i heard around 24xx range they got their integra with a cage, but this was also trying to meet the classification rules too for the series. But yeah I can see 2,300 if done right,
Love to see more of this.
Imagine a brand new car, 0 miles on it and like -300 pounds stuff removed. For me that would be a start of something interresting.
I wonder if the car wll be more rotatable with most of that meight being more towards the rear of the car.
Probably a bit more prone to understeer; that said I'm hoping to work on the front end eventually.
Remove: glove box + plastic center console + carpet ((trunk also) may get too hot) + washer fluid (wash your window) + stereo + speakers + a/c + vent blower...
You'll probably find all the plastics in the rear just pop out, maybe some plastic tabs. I've had mine in and out about 10 times when I was trying to fix a noise,I got it down to seconds.
do you know where the water came from by the spare? I have a 1999 integra I just saw that also..
Mine was entering through the brake lights, the gasket had gone bad. I used some silicone gel and that helped quite a bit.
you should put all those parts that got given to you back on like strut bars, intake, exhaust etc
The real weight gains are to be made up front, and in the rotational assembly. Flywheel, pulley, p/s, abs, a/c, wheels... Reducing weight from the front changes the weight distribution, and can be further accentuated by relocated the battery to between the rear tires. Years ago, I weighed all of those systems as well as the auto and manual transmissions.
You gonna do any sort of cage in the future? 4 point maybe.
Also look up 949 racing wheels; they're ultra light weight and pretty cheap. My friends civic has em.
One of the benefits of having a fast metabolism.
please tell me this was put back after track day....
+INVISIBLE SUN its not his daily car....
I had an idea for an interesting test, but not sure how you would be able to do it.
Something people don't often think about or understand, is how as you lighten the car your suspension will actually feel and behave as though it were stiffer.
It would be interesting if there was a way to quantify that, but it would probably take some sort of equipment to monitor wheel/body movement relative to each other, as well as a very significant weight reduction to notice a change in the data because of all the variables, suspension movement and flex, etc.
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of those dark grey rubber mats at 2:16 ?
Holden Hartley that's sound denting get dry ice crush it up and spread it on it let it sit for a little then scrape it off
I'm really interested in seeing how this affects performance. You should add a nitro set up
Nitrous oxide? In a 4 cyl honda? That would require a complete engine rebuild with higher end parts which would not be very practical for a track car
Great Video as Usual! I recommend you use a gopro with the head strap or the chest strap for these videos. You'll get free hands and a perfect wide point of view.
Yes, I've recently bought it, and that's a great idea!
Did you measure your MPG before you started this weight reduction?
I've got a rough idea of it, but no measurements no. But you can easily put weight in the car to test that stuff out.
"Some rude people...took out my speakers for me" :D
Engineering Explained THAT WAS AWESOME!!! :D
Did you do any 0 to 60 pulls before you took the weight out? or after? ........that be cool......Maybe get some 1/8 or 1/4 times if you have a track near by.....Wish i had the time to mess around with my cars like that again....good stuff dude
Yes, I did some testing, probably post this week!
where is the integra now?
+Engineering Explained Hello, I was just wondering, does weight reduction increase overall handling of the car? You know, does it make the car feel as if it has more traction etc?
Thanks
- Jake - Absolutely. It's a complicated subject, but here's a video related to the topic: czcams.com/video/kNa2gZNqmT8/video.html
Engineering Explained Thanks, I'll watch that right now. Thanks for the quick reply too!
- Jake - A car this light, it shouldn't make much of a difference. Biggest difference would be wheel size, and tires you are using. Suspension would also make a good difference.
Alexis Leyva Cool, thanks :)
+Engineering Explained ok, but what you think about profits from reducing mass on rear of the car and changing weight distribution from 50/50 to hmm lets say 55/45. I Know that lighter car will handle better, but what if you reduces mass only on rear, especially in FWD car? Is will handle better or worse?
But he leaves the rear seat belts in?
I guess this make a big difference when accelerating for sedans and other small vehicles since they have low torque power
Did you forget to remove the jack? It is not much use without the spare...
Stage 2 Get a grinder and start gutting down your door panels. Replace Passenger and driver side glass with light weight plastic. remove Trunk lid and rear bumpers. Remove all plastic interior pieces.
that sound deadening stuck to the floor weighs a surprising amount
Yeah it does, it's made of tar, it's a bunch if layers of tar just stuck to the bottom on Hondas. I helped a buddy take his out of an em1 I'm sure we got 60+ lbs from all that crap.
Cutting door panels? Trimming it?
Will you also remove the AC (if it has that) and the power steering?! O and the cruise control...
Either drop a deuce before each car ride or remove the emblems... same effect...
Probably remove the AC. I'll enjoy power steering for now.
Tuddec Of course! It's my DD. It's a blast.
I see the benefits of removing the weight of the car, but wouln't that also make the car more front-heavy since weight was ramoved from the rear?
Carlos Melgar Yep.
Ive just done a similar thing to my 05 honda accord euro a.k.a tsx and its improved fuel economy
Hey, I'm curious to know what your field of study was in school? (Assuming you went to college)
quan22777 BSME, from NCSU. :)
If your looking to take some rough data and have an android phone. I would recommend the torque app with a Bluetooth obd2 port dongle. That way it can collect ECU data, acceleration and rate data. $30 all in.
Another way is to you use look into getting a Vbox data recorder.
I would relocate the battery to offset the weight of the spare tire. Most Hondas have 60%+ F/R weight dist. Removing the rear weight just increase the front weight contribution = bad handling.
Keep the spare, the coolant and a few tools. The rest can be binned.
Are you going top spray the inside of the car and put in a roll cage
What was the original curb weight of the Integra? Would be interesting to figure out what percentage the weight was reduced...
Somewhere around 2650 I believe.
Engineering Explained So we should expect a 3% improvement in performance? ;)
More integra videos!
you forgot the receipt from target thats like an extra mile
Geez, some engineering.
on stage 3 video how about, no fenders no bumper no doors. no rear hatch n o hood. no ac unit. not so aerodynamic car. just for fun. lets see the 0-60 time.
No engine either, I'll use my feet!
Engineering Explained lmao 😂😂
removing weight is good when you want to go in a straight line but it's bad when you like going on twisty roads with a lot of turns and curves it increases the body roll of the car which can end you up in a ditch or off the road
I removed the spoiler, sub woofer and spare tire from my car and there was a very noticable difference in acceleration.
You will eventually take out the passenger seat right? Or do you need that for it to be street legal?
***** But then how ya gonna ride along?
