- If you have been having trouble dialing in your down imaging, this video will help you improve the quality of your images. I will share a variety of my on the water images with explanations of what you are seeing. You will also learn to interpret simulation down images using various down imaging settings. Learning to tinker with your settings will enhance image clarity. I will also share the personal settings that I use as my general starting point. Keep in mind there are no perfect settings and you have to play with the settings to match the lake conditions that you fish.
This is the type of video I have been looking for. You didn't start out yelling, "What's up?" at me and there is no crazy music. I don't want to be entertained, I want to be educated and this video, (and hopefully your others), feels like a true instructional tool. Thank you!
Thanks Duke, you made my day!
@@stevechiassonfishing5876 i dunno, i thought it was also entertaining :)
Fantastic. This is the video that Humminbird should have on its own website. Thank you so much for making and sharing this.
Thank you so much for the kind words, what a great way to start my day!
I know this video is 2 years old but I been looking for a great video on all the settings! That’s for a great video, I saved it so I can go back and look at it when I am checking my settings
Thanks for the kind words, they are much appreciated!
You are a very effective teacher. You assume nothing. You explain even the most basic items in a way that bring out their importance. Thank you so much for your thoughtful approach!
Thank you Roger, your kind comments made my day! 👍
Best setup video I have seen! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for taking the time to share your kind words, your comment is very much appreciated!
Best video yet. Very informative and explained well
Thank you for the compliment, it is much appreciated.
@@stevechiassonfishing5876 man I don’t even need these other channels now that I’ve found your channel. Please keep posting content
Your comment made my day 😊!
Great narrative and content style. I liked and subscribed! So many videos out there but yours was the most succinct and helped me target the topic. Glad I clicked on your video. With so many people posting them, the no nonsense description and thumbnail photo are huge in sorting them out. WELL DONE!
Thank you so much, your comment is very much appreciated! 😊
Thanks so much for the video. It really does help. You explain a lot of things that put the missing pieces of the puzzle together for me. And I'm sure thousands of others. Thanks once again and keep up the great work love your videos
Thank you Daniel, your kind words mean a great deal to me. It’s always rewarding when you know people appreciate and find your videos helpful.
Steve Chiasson your video are the best to explain the settings thanks
Thanks for the kind words Sam.
Steve, You're videos on the Helix MEGA SI DI GPS G3 are FANTASTIC. These are the BEST videos of the multitude I have viewed. Just packed with info. I keep learning something new every time I review your videos. You explain things very well and in depth. I've only used my Helix 7 once so far and am just itching to set it up next week on my next trip. Hummingbird should seriously look at hiring you!!!
Hi Glenn, I truly appreciate you taking the time to share such positive and encouraging thoughts. Your kind words mean a lot to me. I try to be thorough and complete so that new and experienced anglers both benefit from the videos. Thank you again for the kind words.
Wow! I have had my Helix 7 Mega DI for a year and never had great screen shots like those. I watched your great video all the way through first, then again as I changed the settings on my unit and wow, the final result is very much like your Helix 12 example. I did have to choose color pallet 3 to get the colors like you get with color pallet 2 on your 12. Thank you so much for doing this, cant wait to try it on the lake. Looking forward to your 2D settings video. Thanks!!!
You’re quite welcome and I am happy your images are better now. Reactions like yours are exactly what I am trying to accomplish. I am working on the 2D video but don’t want to post it until I am happy with it.
I think you would if you are operating in simulation mode, not actual fishing.
Your video instructions are concise and clear and perfect what a great job you're doing thank you so much
Thank you Tom, your thoughtful words are much appreciated.
Great video showing how to the humminbird unit settings , keep them coming Steve I learn something new each video !
Thanks Don, lots of new video ideas floating in my head .
Maybe the best video explaining what each feature does! I really appreciate the time you put in making this.
Thank you Michael. My next one should be out Friday. I appreciate your kind words.
Can't wait
Very awesome tutorial video!! Learned a lot from this video!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!
Thanks John for your kind words, much appreciated.
Steve, another fantastic Video. Very informative and clearly understood your voice. This season have been able to dial in my information on screen a LOT BETTER. I've got a couple of newbies to the HB units and your videos have been recommended to them. Also helping me give good info to them.
That’s awesome Brian! It makes me happy when people start dialing in their units. Thank you for sharing the information too as it is my hope to simplify the learning curve for new Humminbird users.
Brian did you send me a question on accessory/360 yesterday? I was out fishing and read a question I thought from you. I was going to answer when I got home but couldn’t find it anywhere.
WOW....Very Informative. Thank you very much for your simple and easy to understand directions. Can't wait to get back on water and try.
You’re quite welcome Brian, your kind words are very much appreciated!
Great explanation and easy to follow, thank you for your videos I have learned a lot from you teaching, keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for your kind words, what a great way to start my day! 😊
Great video, very detailed and informative. I plan to try your setting on my HB and see how they look. Thanks again. I subscribed and I'm looking forward to more video's.
Thanks for the kind words and subscribing to my channel.
Thanks Steve I had no idea how to switch frequencies!
You’re quite welcome, happy to help.
Steve, I really enjoy your video I have learned a lot here. I believe Humminbird should see if they a have Position for you on their team, you would be a great candidate. Great video 👍
Thank you Malcolm, I appreciate your support and kind words.
Thanks will look forward to seeing it!
Yeah these things are either incompatible or too over complicated- I’ve got a helix 7 with a strike master map and a transducer 710295-1 I’m not even sure how to operate it or if they work with each other- frustrating for deep trout
Great information, Steve.
Thank you Jim, sorry for the belated reply. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughtful comment.
Thanks for the video, just ordered a helix 5 DI G3. This video should help me set it up. 👍
That’s awesome, enjoy your new Helix 5.
WOW - great video. Thank you!
You’re quite welcome Kevin, glad you enjoyed it.
Amazing! This was exactly what I was looking for =)
Thanks Sam, I am glad you found the video helpful. Thank you for the kind words.
Very informative video,,,,thanks
Thanks Pat, I appreciate you taking the time to comment on my video.
Great video, I have mega SI that I need to learn to setup.
Thank you, please check out the side imaging video on my channel. It’s done in a similar format to the down imaging video.
Great video! Thank you!
Thanks for the kind words, glad you enjoyed it 😊
This was awesome for me cause I just bought a new helix 5 Very nice just what I needed

Awesome 👏🏻
awesome video
Thanks Gus, I appreciate you taking the time to share your kind thoughts.
Good job 👍
Thanks Jim
Awesome thank you
Glad you liked it, thanks for sharing your comment.
wow..amazing
The clarity on the unit is amazing when you adjust your settings properly for each situation or lake you explore.
Awesome video. Keep em coming!
Will do, thank you!
Great video for a new user. Are you using the transducer in your Ultrex trolling motor or another mounted transducer?
I use the built in MDI transducer in my Ultrex. Thank you for the kind words Ralph.
Great video Steve. New to the Helix family. Question, the settings you do in simulation mode do they stay when you switch to real time imaging mode?
Thanks for the kind words Robb. The settings should transfer to normal mode.
Hi Steve, Great video! My question if you can answer it: I am assuming the settings adjustments for brightness, contrast, zoom, etc are just adjusting the screen display and not making any changes to the recorded sonar signals being received and recorded by the unit, is this your understanding? I believe changing the freq of the sonar does affect what is recorded. Thanks
Thanks Tim and yes you are correct.
Mr Steve I really love the videos .
I just picked up my Helix 7. Been fallowing step how to navigate through the settings. Learn the I do not have the SI enhance option or DI enhance option. Can you tell me what settings I need to look at because I’m going crazy. Thanks a lot Ray.
You really just need to play with sensitivity and contrast to dial in your unit.
@@stevechiassonfishing5876 I can change the frequency levels on 2-D, but nothing on the side of view and Downview
Check out my video on the check button, you can use it to change frequency.
Very good and helpful video. I have one question, does having two transducers on, one on each side of the transom interfere with each other's signals? Thank you in advance
I am glad you found the video helpful. Generally speaking, you shouldn’t have any interernce between a 2D transducer and a side imaging or down imaging transducer.
@@stevechiassonfishing5876 thank you for your quick reply. Much appreciated, keep up the great lessons.
Hi Steve, Great video. is there a way to upload the DI file into a pc. I can downlaod all the files except the down imaging one. Any idea why?
Thanks for the kind words. Take a screenshot using your Helix, transfer sd card to computer, save screenshot, then you have it. Here’s the link to take screenshots.

im having a hard time on what unit to put on my trolling motor. I have a Hummingbird 859 ci HD...sona.GPS...or...a Hummingbirg Helix 7...this vidio is awesome !
Thanks Matt, you might want to go check out the local dealer and try out the units in simulation mode to do a “test drive” to see what works best for you. They may also have some advice for you that could help. I have another video on my CZcams channel that may help, Humminbird Images to help you choose the best unit for you type of idea. That may help as well.

Thanks for sharing. I can't wrap my head around chart speed and actual speed of the boat?
General rule of thumb is to increase chart speed with your boat speed, decrease chart speed when slowing down the boat. Start with chart speed at the default setting which should be in the middle.
Steve, thank you again for such a great video. After checking to see what I actually have, it is a Helix 9 DI GPS and the transducer is 455/800khz. As much as I can find out there are no updates for this unit. We don't fish a lot so is this still a good unit? Your videos have helped me to understand this thing way better. Since I have gotten this Helix 9 it has been nothing but frustration. The boat dealer put on a Helix 5 on the front of the boat with the trolling motor with the same result.
Thank you!
You’re quite welcome Galen and I am glad you’re understanding your units much better now. The Helix 9 is a good unit. I used to have a 998 and 958 and I was still able to see lots with the unit. Taking the time to adjust the settings, especially on different lakes, will definitely give you your best results.
Steve, do the adjustments made while in simulator mode transfer over to operational mode? Also, I have seen where this unit has the ability to label larger fish with their length. If you are familiar with how to do so, can you please explain it? I am primarily targeting striped bass, puppy drum, sheepshead, speckled trout and flounder. Thanks!!!!!
Yes the simulation adjustments carry over to normal mode. With experience you learn to tell the difference by looking at the signal returns and catch comparisons. I don’t have a formula for differentiating size.
@@stevechiassonfishing5876 I understand. Thanks so much!
Will it damage the transducer to "run it" out of the water? Thanks.
It is recommended not to run it out of the water. I use the power button to turn sonar off or I put it in standby.
If settings are entered in demo mode will they same settings carry thru to the active on water mode or is it necessary to enter them in the on water non demo mode again.??
Great question, when I made one of my videos I thought that the settings would not be saved but then I noticed that they were saved. Not sure if it’s universal for all things. Make a note, take a picture , of what your settings are in simulation then check them when you switch over to normal mode and you can verify for yourself.
I am new at this and would like a video on a start-up with a Hummingbird DI 7 G4N
Thanks Gary, I will see what I can do.
When you set up your settings in simulation mode will they be set like that once back to normal or will I have to write down my settings and adjust then when back to normal?
The settings should carry over to normal mode.
Taking a picture of your settings works if you do want to remember them for another time.
Will this info work on a Helix 7 MDI GPS G4 model? Great video by the way!
Thanks for the kind words Ricardo and yes the same concepts apply to your Helix 7.
@@stevechiassonfishing5876 Hey Steve. I forgot to ask you the other day, do you know if there are wall adapters for the Helix 7 instead running it off boat power. They don't seem to exist down here in Texas. Can a electronics store rig up something or is that too risky?
Hi Ricardo, there is a PC Helix 12V DC Ice Flasher Accessory product code 720105-1 that is available with a cigarette lighter connector so if you have an adapter that plugs into the wall to receive the cigarette lighter connector that could work. Personally I use an ice fishing 12V and connect to that when I want to use Helix indoors.
@@stevechiassonfishing5876 Perfect. That's exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks Steve.
Plan to buy helix 9 G4. I only troll the Great Lakes. Not sure if DI will be useful at 100-125 ft. Would you have any images at these depth? Have you used DI at these depths?
Thanks
Hi Robert, I personally have not used it that deep. The unit you’re looking at is designed to shoot mega + imaging to 200’ so it will work in 100-125’ of water.
Thank you Steve.... What is the max dept you have used DI?
I generally don’t fish deeper than 60’ unless I am doing some trolling.
I want to look for sunken boats and outboard motors within 400' depth is this unit good for this?
I have found sunken boats most often with side imaging but never in depths of 400’ as I don’t fish waters that deep. Mega down imaging isn’t designed for 400’ depths. Using lower frequency non mega settings would give you your best chance at finding sunken boats. I have no experience at those depths so I can’t give you a definite answer.
Hi Steve...I have a Helix 10 mdi G4 hooked to my ultrex with the mdi transducer built in. It reads the down imaging but doesn't show the depth. Could the built in transducer be acting up or is it a setting not correct? Help please sir.
Try under the set up tab and scroll down to digital readouts to make sure you are displaying the depth. I am assuming you have the proper cabling attached to your unit, MKR MI 1 attached to cable from Ultrex and plugs into your Helix.
@@stevechiassonfishing5876 I do but will double check the number on cable. On the box for depth I checked sonar,
I just got a Helix 9 MDI+ g4N GPS.
I'm so nervous to work the settings. It'll be my first fish finder besides a Deeper.
Using the unit in simulation mode, as demonstrated in the video, is a great way to familiarize yourself with the unit.
@@stevechiassonfishing5876 Oooh, I assure you, I plan on it. Lol
@@stevechiassonfishing5876 I plan to 100%.
So everything works in mine except down/side imaging. Just a black screen. Any thoughts. Helix 9
Down range set too shallow?
Is it normal for my mega down imaging to have a red tint? If i freeze frame and mess with settings the water column is black but any new image coming in from the right the water column has a red tint im not sure if its normal or how to fix it. Thank you!
I am not familiar with a red tint, try a different colour palette and see if it’s still there, may just be the colour palette you are using.
Have a Helix 9 do these settings and buttons work the same as the 12 that you were working on . Mine is Helix 9 DI mega
Sorry hit wrong button have a Helix 9 MDI +GPS G4N will the things that you showed on this video work on the Helix 9 as the Helix 12 you were working on
Hi Joe, there are very minimal differences between my G3N and your G4N. The Helix 9 and 12 work on the same operating system. I do have a video on my channel comparing G3N and G4N.
Here’s the link
czcams.com/video/6QG5gE4xmr8/video.html
@@stevechiassonfishing5876 thanks
Hi Steve. Is this the G3N or G4N?
Okay at the end of video. I see its the g3n.
I dont get the slow screen scroll. Wouldnt that screw up your image if your not going a fraction of a mile an hour tops?
Generally speaking, the faster the boat speed, faster the chart speed and vice versa. Start with the setting at 5, in the middle and adjust accordingly. Mega 360 shows best images at lowest cycling speed. 2D, DI, SI use the designated chart speed.
@@stevechiassonfishing5876 Yea, I heard you set it at the speed your going. Like if you're going 3 mph then you set it to 3.
👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you, glad you found the video helpful.
In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens czcams.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
That’s awesome, glad you’re enjoying your Humminbird.
Does this include all helix 5 DI CHIRP
The settings are basically the same but keep in mind that the Helix 5 will not give you the mega option.
When will see 2d sonar settings?
Still working on it, I am trying to get some really good images to make the video special.
Can i setup a hummingbird helix 5 without being in the water
It’s always better on the water to match current conditions. You can set it up off the water by putting it into simulation mode, just remember to flip back to normal mode (during start up procedures hitting menu button as per prompt from unit). During normal mode the transducer will be pinging which you can avoid by shutting sonar off and you can work on map/chart data.
@@stevechiassonfishing5876 ty
Narrow, wide or Full for DI?
My sonar settings is set at wide.
Yeah yeah I've done all that and just can't get a picture anything like that
Contrast is the key adjustment, what unit are you using?
a group of pikes ???
Pipes
Helix
Yes screenshot taken with a Helix 12 G3N MDI+
Why not make a video what buttons to push how to turn it on & how to get down imageing get right in front of the unit in the shade with no glare & show what buttons to push & where is the on off button had mind for two years can’t find on / off button
You have had it for 2 years and you can't find the on/off button????? Really?? If you can't look at the unit and after looking at the buttons not figure out which one is the power button or call Humminbird or even ask the rep you bought the unit from where it is then this technology is wayyyyyyyy over your head. And if you watch the video he does show where the buttons are.
@@drjaywhitlock He can't spell imaging, what does that tell you?
Get to the point
