  • Is your depth finder too confusing? Not with Tim's help! He'll teach you everything you need to know so your unit reads with picture-like clarity. His quick tricks for adjusting your side imaging units will clear everything up and provide a picture with real detail so you can find fish and structure more easily.
The tricks to side imaging are a combination of sensitivity, contrast, and frequency. Many anglers fail to understand the importance of changing frequencies in different environments. Tim goes in depth about the differences between the 455khz, 800khz, and Mhz (Mega) Frequencies and what each can do for your overall image quality. Regardless of the brand unit you're using, switching between 455 and 800 kHz will completely change your picture.
For anglers looking for a starting point, Tim recommends setting both your sensitivity and contrast to 50%. This is an excellent starting point on virtually any unit. From there you can begin following his advice and making adjustments to get the most out of your unit. Below is a breakdown of the unit Tim uses as well as some of the other great options on the market at different price points.

Dude, just stumbled across your channel and I've gotta say, this is one of the most informative and understandable videos I've watched on these units. I'm new to all this technology and really struggling to absorb all the material. Just bought a boat with 2 Helix 9's and I'm fixing to add a Solix 12 my dad gave me! Will definitely be watching more of your videos! Thanks a ton for dropping these here!

Great videos guys! I appreciate the time and energy you guys put into making these videos to help people out on the water! ‼️I have a video request‼️ with the way the water fluctuates so much during this time of year, could you guys do an in depth video of what you guys generally fish and how the fish set up/ react when they go from being up shallow in bushes, cover etc. when the water rises, to what they do and how to catch them when the water starts dropping again. It’s always been a tough time for me to catch/pattern fish under those conditions. Thanks for the fishing knowledge you guys share!

Tim, I’ve owned my Helix7G2N over two years now and probably viewed two hundred videos on how to use the unit. However I must say your video is the first to explain How&When to use thoseures in practi features in layman terms! I don’t consider myself a complete idiot but I probably only get 20-30% of understanding other videos explaining the features in layman’s terms. I hope you go thru some of the other important features that are there also to explain exactly what you are seeing . .
I think now i might have to upgrade my unit to receive the Mega imaging also!!!

I picked up a Garmin 93sv with Panoptix Livescope. I spent the last 3 days doing nothing but slow cruising with my dogs in side vu 455 Hz just to mark waypoints on 2 different lakes. I sill have quite a bit more to cover but I feel like I'm going to spend a lot less time casting at nothing in the future. I also practiced flipping to a different chart to navigate to my waypoints. That seemed like it would be easy but it took a little more effort than I thought.
The next time out, I will take a little time turning up to higher frequency and seeing if I can find fish with the side vu and the clear vu. I'm also going to experiment with he split screen 2d sonar to see if I can find the schools of white perch. Appreciate the guidance.

Strange I've found it to work mutch better then my old Lawrence ever did to each there own i guess. The big thing for me that separates garmin from there rest is customer service. They stand behind there product's and i have hawg zero failures. Lawrence also stood behind there product but being a kayak angler fishfinder often gets wet and Lawrence fried over and over again. Which they did replace it but after 3 times of that happening i switched to Garmin and will never go back. I've flipped the kayak and submerged there unit and it's continued to work perfectly.

Great video, clear explanation. I have been running mega in shallow water 15-20ft and find schools of fish. When I come back over them they move around 60ft away. With an older garmin unit with lower frequency the fish follow the boat. Do you find 1KW too high? I feel like I'm cooking the fish! Is there a situation in your experience where you would drop the frequency to trigger a bite?
