- Is your depth finder too confusing? Not with Tim's help! He'll teach you everything you need to know so your unit reads with picture-like clarity. His quick tricks for adjusting your side imaging units will clear everything up and provide a picture with real detail so you can find fish and structure more easily.
The tricks to side imaging are a combination of sensitivity, contrast, and frequency. Many anglers fail to understand the importance of changing frequencies in different environments. Tim goes in depth about the differences between the 455khz, 800khz, and Mhz (Mega) Frequencies and what each can do for your overall image quality. Regardless of the brand unit you're using, switching between 455 and 800 kHz will completely change your picture.
For anglers looking for a starting point, Tim recommends setting both your sensitivity and contrast to 50%. This is an excellent starting point on virtually any unit. From there you can begin following his advice and making adjustments to get the most out of your unit. Below is a breakdown of the unit Tim uses as well as some of the other great options on the market at different price points.

great video. Love to see a down imaging video similar to this one. Thanks for pumping out great content. We appreciate you guys.
Thank you so much . I have a Humminbird 1197 and you just improved my comprehension. Great presentation. We didn't have someone teaching us like this years ago, so I had to fumble along - again for too long!
Dude, just stumbled across your channel and I've gotta say, this is one of the most informative and understandable videos I've watched on these units. I'm new to all this technology and really struggling to absorb all the material. Just bought a boat with 2 Helix 9's and I'm fixing to add a Solix 12 my dad gave me! Will definitely be watching more of your videos! Thanks a ton for dropping these here!
Thank You Tim for breaking things down for us newbies! Such a relief to actually see real world examples instead of stock pictures!
Can't thank you guys enough for the level of information you provide us.
Everyone need to "SAVE" this video to your favorites, Incredible job Tim,keep the information coming, I learned a ton 👍👍
Next time, drive by and shoot docks. Have the solex units and love them 👍🏻 good show. What I like to do is go down the banks and just use one side of the side imageing to see full screen toward the bank, try it sometime. From Kentucky
You guys have the absolute best videos. I love these electronics videos. They are so helpful for those of us that are novices. Thank you for all you do.
Great videos guys! I appreciate the time and energy you guys put into making these videos to help people out on the water! ‼️I have a video request‼️ with the way the water fluctuates so much during this time of year, could you guys do an in depth video of what you guys generally fish and how the fish set up/ react when they go from being up shallow in bushes, cover etc. when the water rises, to what they do and how to catch them when the water starts dropping again. It’s always been a tough time for me to catch/pattern fish under those conditions. Thanks for the fishing knowledge you guys share!
Thank you ! This was the most comprehensive, clear explanation I have found. This is going to help me soooo much. Great job !!
As always, well done. I wish there was some screen recording but it didn't hurt the info - well done man.
Great video, even an old fella like me can understand. First sounder I used was a paper scrolling unit...yes I'm THAT old. About to purchase a unit like this and go fish east coast Australia, great barrier reef, should be fun!!
Super rad, Tim! I have a Humminbird Helix 5 DI unit and I'm gonna definitely start working those different settings!
Nice. Thanks for doing this video. I’ve been searching for a good Humminbird tutorial and this is great.
Thank you for this video!! I went out the next day after watching the video and it made a world of difference!!
Thank you for the information. You did a great job explaining something I need to better understand; when to use what frequency.
I just upgraded to Mega DI, super excited to add side imagining next. Thanks for the tips Tim 👍🏽
Great video....excellent job explaining everything about side imaging and setting it up
This is one of the best tutorials yet! Thank you
Great Video Thank You for your time, really appreciate it. Helped me understand the settings better.
By far the best fishing channel out there....everyone else is playing for 2nd and they always will. I have run out of words to describe how good these guys are but if you're watching them then you already know what I'm talking about.
I've found in shallower water turn Sensitivity down below 10, over say 25ft. of water turn sensitivity up just a bit at a time. This seems to clean up the image quite a bit on the screen. You guys are a wealth of knowledge. Keep up the fantastic educational information highway. Just don't go 4 lanes at one time.
Absolutely an awesome video!! I always searched in Mega, but will try the lower bandwidths next time out. Thanks brother. Jeff.
Same for me. Only been out 4 or 5 times with my new Helix Mega DI/SI but will now try lower settings first to see what shows up. A big thanks to Tim!
Great teaching on side imagining and adjusting the settings. Thank you
Great job Tim as always! Thanks for the tips and reminder and tips of how my unit works bc I've not had it that long and still getting use to it.
Wow! Great info. Will help me out on my new Helix 10's in 2020. keep em coming.
Still learning how to use our Helix but this definitely helps. Thanks!
Been watch alot of SI tutorials. This is the best so far to help me run my new Humm. Helix 9 mega..Thanks
The best explanation I've heard. Thanks
Nice break down! Really helps! Thanks TacticalBassin!
Thank you for helping me get more fish with my unit.
best teaching video of the bird I have seen! Thank you!
Thanks for the great video always helpful!
Fantastic info I sure hope you will do more it would be really helpful some of us just don’t get enough time on the water to use our electronics effectively 👍😎
Thanks for the video! I learned something useful today!!
JUST GOT MY MEGA AND THIS HELPS VERY MUCH TO UNDERSTAND THANKS
Great video Tim, very easy to understand 👍
Very good video. These electronic videos are much needed! Thx
Thank you so much for the tips are greatly appreciate it you have no idea👍🏾
you guys always produce excellent and informative videos! another channel that does well to explain tech stuff is "fish the moment". Great job TB for your work and efforts!!
Great, Great video sir. Best example of side imaging that I’ve ever seen. Thank you.
Go and watch i think hes called fish the moment he does great videos also
Great tips Tim! Keep up the good vids!
Thanks so much man I've hot a humminbird mega si 9 inch. Was really wondering how in the world all that worked! Love you guys.
Great video,please continue!
Tim, I’ve owned my Helix7G2N over two years now and probably viewed two hundred videos on how to use the unit. However I must say your video is the first to explain How&When to use thoseures in practi features in layman terms! I don’t consider myself a complete idiot but I probably only get 20-30% of understanding other videos explaining the features in layman’s terms. I hope you go thru some of the other important features that are there also to explain exactly what you are seeing . .
I think now i might have to upgrade my unit to receive the Mega imaging also!!!
Very nice video. I really need to get my hummingbird tuned in. I will use your tips thank you so much
Idk how this doesn’t get millions of views. This is a game changer. Wouldn’t mind more like this. Maybe more witch actually fish in it?
Thanks Mate great video I love learning tune ups for the bird thank you again.
Great video!! I forwarding it to everyone who needs it.
Love the videos! Keep'em coming.
I just watched this for the 3rd time and it clicked. Thank you for making and explaining it.
nice
Great info! I'm just have 3 x solix on the boat. Best regards from The Netherlands,
Excellent info. Thanks
This was very helpful thank you!!
I love side imaging in my 999/1199 units and have discovered to side image new spots and down image anything in detail. If not in shallow water you will identify structure and fish incredibly better than side imaging alone. Just my 2 cents.
very useful explanation, bro. Thanks
Subbed! Thanks for all the knowledge sharing.
Great explanation of frequencies nice video
Appreciate the info brother. Much help
That was great. Thanks. I finally get it.
Thanks for the video !
Thank You for your explanation
Very helpful. Thanks.
Thank you, great video.
Thanks, excellent clear instructions!
Thank you Jim!
One day I'll get me a nice unit. Great video as always
GREAT INFO...thanks a ton
Nice video, saw many, but yours is understandable
Thanks for the good info
Nice info. Thanks man.
good info, thank you
Great video. Thanks
This makes me feel a lot better, I can't read yours either. I thought just mine was crap. My first Ranger had a flasher in the dash, I wish I had it back. I could find fish with the old stuff, I hate this new stuff. Usually never take the covers off.
this was helpful. Thanks
Love these videos... Want more.
you guys are simply awsome!
Good lesson. Thanks.
thanks for the info, good stuff
Great video! What exactly do you mean by setting up your transducer, is that in addition to playing with sensitivity and contrast?
Great explanation
Great pointers
Wow great info thanks
You should do a video on using 360. This is the perfect time of year to explore the lakes with electronics. At least it is here in So. Oregon its still pretty cold and lakes are filling up.
Thanks Tim. Answering a question here and there would be nice.
We get hundreds of questions and comments a day and respond to as many as we can. What is your question?
Great tutorial 👌
I don't know about anyone else, but I sure learned some things from this. Thanks
LOL....still learning with every vid....but I'm so far away from having electronics... someday! Thanks guys as always for what you do.
Thankyou, very helpful
Great vid thank you.
Do you have a video on down imagine ? Great vid btw ! Thanks
Tim just a suggestion, when you are doing shortcuts on the screen like split screen or going from one image full screen and switching to the other I would appreciate you verbalizing how you performed that task. I have a Solix10 and would love to know the shortcuts. I am a visual learner as I don't like having to pick up a manual unless I absolutely have to. Thanks, good job!
Wish you guys would have talked about transducer placement, how you run power to the units, ect. Theres a lot more that goes in to getting a good picture than just playing with settings
I use an electronic bus to power my electric to front units, and power comes from one of my trolling batteries. My console unit power comes from the other trolling battery. I have good power on all unit, which is not disturbed by starting the motor. My wiring is heavy gauge
I have two solex units, and I run little heavier wire running from each one of my trolling motor batteries. Use to start my big motor, and the solex units would shut down and re-start. Now when I start up, they run fine. These new fish finders use lots of power. From Kentucky
Will power effect the image? My unit come on just fine.
Lonnie Hall never rig units of trolling motor batteries
bowhunter65 why not??
Love the electronics videos!
Great video.
Good info right there !!!!
I picked up a Garmin 93sv with Panoptix Livescope. I spent the last 3 days doing nothing but slow cruising with my dogs in side vu 455 Hz just to mark waypoints on 2 different lakes. I sill have quite a bit more to cover but I feel like I'm going to spend a lot less time casting at nothing in the future. I also practiced flipping to a different chart to navigate to my waypoints. That seemed like it would be easy but it took a little more effort than I thought.
The next time out, I will take a little time turning up to higher frequency and seeing if I can find fish with the side vu and the clear vu. I'm also going to experiment with he split screen 2d sonar to see if I can find the schools of white perch. Appreciate the guidance.
Thanks Tim. I run the Garmin units. You just GOTTA take time to learn your units. All units work well if you are willing to learn the settings.
I have a Garmin with side imaging, but haven’t figured it out much yet. It’s a small screen to stare at while driving near the bank or docks. I need to learn it.
@@danielsanders243 I have the 93sv it takes some time.
Great video!
Thank you for the tips i haven't learned to put my Garmin sv to work correctly yet but this was very helpful
Garmen has the worst side view of all companys
Strange I've found it to work mutch better then my old Lawrence ever did to each there own i guess. The big thing for me that separates garmin from there rest is customer service. They stand behind there product's and i have hawg zero failures. Lawrence also stood behind there product but being a kayak angler fishfinder often gets wet and Lawrence fried over and over again. Which they did replace it but after 3 times of that happening i switched to Garmin and will never go back. I've flipped the kayak and submerged there unit and it's continued to work perfectly.
What speed do you travel at when doing the 455 khz scan. Thanks for the awesome vids.
Great video, clear explanation. I have been running mega in shallow water 15-20ft and find schools of fish. When I come back over them they move around 60ft away. With an older garmin unit with lower frequency the fish follow the boat. Do you find 1KW too high? I feel like I'm cooking the fish! Is there a situation in your experience where you would drop the frequency to trigger a bite?
