  • The skill of situational awareness is unfortunately not referred to at all in the in-game tutorials, yet its key to surviving & thriving in the hectic melees of Arcade.
    This guide demonstrates techniques that, if practiced, will create good habits that ensure you're always aware of your surroundings.
    Included is footage from one of Messersmitt's excellent videos (thanks Messer!) which can be seen in full here - • War Thunder Fw 190A De...

    So true. 9 cases out of 10 you get killed by the enemy you didn't see.

      @captainnyet9855 Před 8 lety +2

      you do? 9/10 times I get killed it's by the guy I did see,but was unable to avoid because he started off with an altitude advantage, and was flying above spawn.

  • @jengar6258
    @jengar6258 Před 8 lety +21

    Good stuff mate, situational awareness is half the game, everything starts from there, and most pilots dont keep to this practice, so if you do you have a massive advantage.

      Considering you are an experienced player, and you have not stopped playing recently, can you confirm that Gaijin increased the arcade spotting mechanics in the latest patches again, after the abysmal state it was in at 1.53 or 1.55?

    • @jengar6258
      @jengar6258 Před 8 lety

      I've not noticed it to be abysmal in those patches tbh, it was less good then before, but not abysmal, with good sit awareness there were no major issues for me in those patches when it comes to the spotting mechanics. It does seem to be a bit better again now, but if they changed anything i dont think it was in the patch notes ;)

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      Agreeing with Jengar here, although as I hadn't played since January my memory isn't that reliable. I know at one point last year the spotting distance was reduced too far for Arcade, and it does seem to be longer range now, but I'd well & truly adjusted to whatever it was in 1.55 & don't remember it being a problem.

    Long5hot primarily talked about being aware of your *immediate* surroundings here. But I'd say that situation awareness is more than that. On a basic level, you should also be constantly aware of your ammo count (especially in AB), altitude, IAS, and the direction of your own spawn. On a intermediate level, you should be aware of the current ticket count and objectives, as well as any enemies that might be interfering with your objectives (i.e., planes trying to cap, ground attackers doing objectives, or enemy fighters hunting bombers). On a high level, you should have a general idea of the height of the clouds, whether or not your team has control of altitude (if not, how high you can fly but still be relatively safe), and the current top 3 leaders of the enemy team, so you can avoid / target them. All these on top of scanning the enemy formation for strengths and weaknesses, of course.
    It's a lot to do while constantly looking around, but War Thunder really isn't an easy game to master :D.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety +1

      I agree totally with everything you just said :) I think it would have been too much trying to include it all in the scope of this video though, especially as I placed it very early in the series. I'll have to ponder on how & where to include that information in a future beginner's guide vid.

    just today I was playing war thunder and I found myself having better situational awareness than ever before, after my brake from the game I was quite rusty, but after a few matches in some of my more capable airplanes, like the bf-109 F-4's, the LaGG-3's and apparently even the La-5, I am feeling better than ever, getting many battles with no deaths and over 5 kills.
    My increased awareness allowed me to play much more aggressive then I used to, which almost doubled the amount of kills I get every game.

    Great advice! I still struggle myself with visually tracking enemies that are chasing me, but it's an invaluable skill for staying alive. I noticed that Messer even looks over his shoulder to check his behind while setting up the shot on that second P-51.
    Sometimes, and its even happened a few times since I came back, I'll forget to look around for a while and get that tingling, sick feeling, so I start doing a few basic evasive maneuvers while checking on my situation. It has actually saved my life to pull a random Split-S because I forgot to look around for a minute or two.

    A tip is to set a key that you can easly acces to look backwards, I, for example have set space to look behind me.

    • @mihaeltomasovic
      @mihaeltomasovic Před 8 lety

      It is actually best to use *SPACE* to fire your main armament and use something like *Caps Lock* to look behind you. I find that I generally will simply use the *C* key or just look around when I am performing a movement bound to the keyboard as that allows you to "free look" just as the *C* key does! I was just wondering, but what do you use to fire your main armament? Do you just use the *LMB* or do you have it bound to a certain key on your keyboard?

    • @alexmansson1250
      @alexmansson1250 Před 8 lety +2

      Kristjen Štjuprić I use *LMB* to fire my guns, and i only use my keyboard for roll and rudder, so i manover and fire with my mouse. I use space more to see what's shootng at me, and to avoid damage like Messersmitt did in the clip in the vid. When worrying about my Situational awereness i use *C* aswell.

      Sounds great, m8! Do you happen to have a gaming mouse of some sort? The thing I'm looking for right now is a good gaming mouse with at least five buttons as I'm using just a regular cheap mouse with LMB and RMB plus the MMB and wheel... I would _really_ like to be able to control my speed *completely* with my mouse but right now I only have throttle up bound to my *RMB* and throttle down to my *LShift* key...

    Very instructive, most of the kills happens because of lack of situational awareness.
    Also:
    I got a few issues/request/questions.
    -It's me? or the radar can't track enemies above 5km of your position?
    - Do you find the FW190 a bit, too,excesively OP? not because of cannons it carries, of course. the airplane in mediocre hands can evade any airplane. I can't find any weakness to exploit.
    -Do you try the new p61? it's fun. I would like to see a tutorial of that airplane. One of my all time favorites birds.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      Radar range varies greatly depending on the mode you're playing and your crew's awareness/vision stats. In RB I thought it was limited to 5km, but that's less if there's a significant altitude difference.
      With their rolling speed 190s can indeed be very difficult to hit. Not if you get them at a 90% deflection angle though.
      I haven't got the P-61 yet, or any of the new aircraft since 1.55. It'll probably take a while before I do unfortunately.

    My biggest issue with Joystick flying is situational awareness. I have a HUGE problem keeping sight of my opponenet. I will stick with Mouse Aim for fighters and attackers until I can figure this out.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 7 lety +1

      Yes that's the huge challenge with Sim - keeping track of enemies during an engagement. It certainly helps if you have a 4K monitor, as even with 1080p the enemy plane is heavily pixelated at a few hundred meters distance and easily lost against the background. It doesn't help that WT's graphics engine fails to show sunlight reflections.
      Other than that, you preferably want to fly planes with excellent visibility, such as the bubble-cockpit US and Russian fighters, and you need some form of head tracking. I actually spent a couple of months with a joystick/pedals/head tracking setup, and never got the hang of it. Not only was it a continual struggle to get guns on target due to wobble, I was always prone to stalling & falling out of the sky during a dogfight, and the head tracking made me nauseous & gave me a sore neck.

    Hey does the defensive flying form Messersmitt's video also work for arcade? I tryed a lot of defensive flying in the 190 and i always got shot down, cause the lead indicator makes it so easy to answere to these manouvers.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      It does work, yes, though you'll usually need to add some rudder to the maneuvers to make yourself a bit harder to hit. The lead indicator actually makes things harder when you get it to dance around, which is why snap rolls are so effective in evading head-ons.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      Well you've commented on a video labeled "Beginner's Guide", but there are a lot of concepts in my vids that apply to all modes. To me, the modes in WT are Arcade, Arcade+, and Semi-Realistic (otherwise known as Sim).
      Arcade+, like Arcade, has 3rd person camera and fly-by-wire but far less going on - more emphasis on lengthy duels with very few planes involved. In many ways its an easier mode to do well in, but because of that its often boring as hell. That will change whenever they finally get around to implementing 32x32 EC on a permanent basis. However I'm about to embark on a series which I hope will help arcade players make a transition to RB without embarrassing themselves.

    I'm not sure that dodging in 190s makes anyone an expert. Its probably a bad example for beginners also as they have a very unhistorical exaggerated roll speed. The only plane in the game that I know of from war footage that had that fast of roll is the ki-43 and it was nerfed straight into the dirt for it.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      Messer is an expert though, he does a lot more than that little trick in his vids. I used that footage because it was such a clear example of the benefits of looking behind you while maneuvering to avoid an enemy on your six, which I find a very difficult skill to practice myself - I don't expect that new players would find it easy to get the hang of it.

    • @TaxReligionNow
      @TaxReligionNow Před 8 lety

      There is an easier way. You simply drop a wing, rudder under your opponent, and wag your wings to throw off their aim. Works even for slower rolling planes and better than your typical(predictable) split S. Also good if you don't have the roll speed. I don't need any lessons on the 190. I'm not an expert(if there is such a thing)but even experts make errors and drawing confidence in evasive abilities in a 190 is a most definate error. That plane is the derpiest plane in every respect. Just above the cannon p-51. Derp cannons and derp controls for derpy pilots. No intention of taking shots at Messer. Just the Fw190. I have an intense hatred of that plane. Just the sight of one fills me with roiling hate.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      Ok no worries. I guess its just a pity he wasn't flying ... a Messersmitt :)
      I could have gone trolling through flip's videos for an example, as he's produced plenty of evasions/reversals while looking backwards & with a variety of planes, but I haven't succeeded in getting in touch with flip lately whereas Messer responded straightaway.
      So long as newbies get the idea of camera usage from the video, I don't think it matters too much.

      Congratulations longshot you didnt do anything for team support and come on only 7 kills with OP russian planes? I think you can do better.

      Uh, no. It was simply an honest video showing a huge amount of rust, I wasn't showing anyone how to do anything. It seems someone pissed in your cereal mate. If you don't like my vids, don't watch.

      As ex Warthunderer i liked youre vids. Showing me basic stuff about flying. After this vid i reinstalled it to look what changed the last year. But maybe its a hint that you can do better performance ingame and get better vids done.

      Thing is, you described this video as useless, yet its addressing the most common question that I'm still asked on almost a daily basis by new players - and situational awareness really is the key to doing well in Arcade.
      Going by the comments, nobody else has a problem with this vid, nor with my previous one. I'm always happy to accept constructive criticism, but yours is simply along the lines of "I don't like it, do better", and that doesn't make me inclined to pay attention to what little you've have to say. Especially as you don't play the game anymore.
      In short, if you want me to do better with my videos, please do better with your comments.
