So many dummies with the oil pump, rods and mains are going to go way before a small end on a rod, so STFU.

I was thinking that Warren. The only explanation was the one you gave. When they reconditioned the rods somebody fu_ed up installing the bushings . Only explanation. Fu__in sucks that the entire engine is fubar with brass particles everywhere. Plus the out of pocket for you plus the owner of the truck being down now. Sh__ deal all the way around

In the aviation world, at least with piston engines many say go with a manufacture reman. Truth is the workers there are just regular guys off the street making low pay with a manager overseeing. People shy away from their local mechanic rebuilding in favor of the manufacturer reman.

Plus fwiw, these engines have an excellent oil filter system with both a cartridge element, as well as a centrifuge spinner filter which is why they can safely run much longer oil change intervals over other mfgs. That centrifuge will get out more stuff than just a regular filter by itself. And that head should be fine to reuse because it doesn't have a cam in it (bearings), either. Good luck buddy 👍.

We try to rebuild everything we can ourselves but sometimes you're forced to use reman and it usually bites you every time. No one will stand behind anything anymore and it always becomes your problem. I have had to eat lots of time and money for parts just to make sure the customer is treated the way I would want to be.

You're absolutely right Warren!! It's all about the money!! They probably had some unqualified, underpaid, inexperienced hack machine/refurbish the rods, or they were missing the right reamer for the rod small end and just winged it!! Either way they were saving money, or so they thought!!! Since the other four seem okay, I'm of the suspicion that they forgot or accidentally skipped the last two!
It's comforting to know that there are still some people like you, that have some self respect and accountability! It's sadly lacking in the world today! We watched you assemble the engine and, we all know, did a damn good job, and we would have been proud to have accomplished such a job ourselves! I don't see how they could blame you for this!
Glad to see Josey is doing good. We have to cherish the good in life, and learn not to dwell in the bad. It's good to see you enjoying your new puppy! I also got a new puppy, and am having fun playing with him and loving on him! I have a feeling that "it's" going to get a lot worse, sooner than later; we better enjoy it while we can!!

Being the mechanic there we constantly deal with broken trucks ,most from salt damage, popped and broken crank sensors ,green wiring, and poor craftsmanship on the up fits we get .You are absolutely right no one cares anymore about quality of work or what’s right , it’s all about the money for sure.

  • @daspicsman

I once saved my company more than $50k on just one small part. They couldn’t believe it and asked me how I knew to fix that. I said that I had gone to the warranty department and asked them what their biggest return was. We brainstormed a bit and devised a solution. Implemented the solution and went along our business. It really comes down to listening to your people, getting real feedback from your customers, and acting on it. Corporations build in a failure rate that they are ok with. If you buy a new car there has already been a decision made on how many deaths there will be and what it will cost. If it’s too high they’ll fix the problem. If not, send it. You’re simply a statistic folks.

Be sure and check the oil passage in the rod - we had a kit fail on a 149 Detroit one time - changed it out and that same hole failed again in short order.. pulled it down again and after looking everything over - found a broken drill bit left in the oil hole - the bit must have broken while being pulled out because the oil hole passed air just fine when we blew it out one the first replacement - everything is fine till you loaded it up on the load bank... one trick a really old guy taught me about checking an engine when load banking an engine - when your breaking it in let it idle every few minutes - if something is seizing the engine wont idle - the excessive drag will kill the engine when you come off high speed ... simple as that - saves throwing a rod and ruining a block from a mistake or rebuild issue

    @boisecat Před 2 lety +9

I think you are 100% right on it being an assembly mistake and I can't say I'm surprised. I own a small fleet of trucks with cat engines. In December I had to rebuild one and I always use genuine cat parts. I was lucky enough to find and buy a genuine cat platinum kit. The head was not a reman, it was brand new. It went together with no issues, and started up easy and had great oil pressure. During break in, it spun a cam bering. A couple of years ago on the rebuild of a B model cat, again with a NEW genuine cat head it lost a valve seat on an exhaust valve. Cat would not step up to pay for redoing work that their failure caused. Not to mention the poor quality of these pricy parts.

I had a company that built and machined 3208 Cat Engines for us. All of the engines had rod problems because the rod bushings were machined out of square. They were sized correctly but something happened and they were not square. It took a lot of researching the parts that failed. Pistons scored the skirts because the pins were seizing up. We got it all fixed and after replacing a number of engines they found the problem. These guys were good to work with and stood behind the work. After 30 years it don't seem as big a problem as it was then. What I'm saying is, "people make mistakes"! At the end of the day just look back and say, " its all good and bad comes along sometimes"! Thanks for the update Warren. I agree with your initial diagnosis. Don’t see how anything you did from assembly of the parts onto a factory short block. If there was some issues in the oil pump, you would have had pressure issues and Main and rod bearing problems before the small end failures. If they didn’t line up the oil hole on the small end, that could have caused the issue as well. Thanks for sharing your time and videos. Glad to know someone else with a Conscience and Integrity.

Having morals and ethics is a rare thing today. Standing by them and not just talking about them is even found less. I work in historic masonry and if my hydrated lime fails because I didn’t watch the temperatures and hydration… I stand by it. I know what it takes to make or break the project. I watch your channel because you are honest, I know you work yourself too hard. You have that guilt that many folks don’t have these days. You not only perform the job, but you pour yourself and your respect into it. The feeling of being sabotaged by inadequate components is infuriating but you stand by your work. That is why I watch. Thank you for making me feel a little less lonely when there is standard to be met.

We had early rod bushing failures after rebuilds in a few old 817 Internationals as used in the old TD25's. Talked to the retired old timer from the machine shop that had been doing the rod bushings and he immediately said "Bet they're just honing and aren't burnishing the new bushings". He went to the machine shop with us and informed them that the bushings in those big rods had to be burnished. He even showed them how to do it. Never had another early bushing failure. Not saying that's the problem in your Paccar but that's the experience I've had with failed rod bushings right after rebuild.

Hello Warren, you are the Iron man of USA, let us know the outcome of the reman short block, if Paccar refuse to honour what is clear to all your subscribers, we will let them know what the industry thinks of their workmanship, and more importantly, what they intend to do, to up the quality of their work. You are a first rate mechanic.

Don't feel alone, you're not the only one that does it right. We specialize in repowering old Bluebird Wanderlodge motorhomes that came w/3208's. Replaced the air pump, belts, water pump, powersteering, extensive chassis work, sent the guy on his way. Got 300 miles down the road engine blew up.
Inspection revealed air pump wasn't tight to the base and engine oil was lost. Found a low hour replacement from a firetruck and retrofitted. N/C to the customer and he made out, went from N/A to turbo charged example. Was glad to do it, and have happy customer.

You are exactly correct about corporations globally. I have worked maintenance/engineering tech positions at advanced levels and the things I have experienced and seen into trying to do the right things made me lose many nights sleep and question my values.
Yes they do have these models of acceptable circumstances liabilities as part of the corporations cost of doing business and it started many centuries ago if think of the first world explorers/plunders in history, they have boiled this idea for so long it is being taught to existing folks that there is nothing to see here and move on...
I am regretful Warren that you have to share in this experience yet again...
    Please take care!

I worked for peterbilt Denton for 16 years....you are correct, it’s all about money. These trucks break on the assembly line and many are shipped with multiple known issues for the dealership to fix because it’s all about production numbers. They don’t care about customers or quality, that’s marketing’s problem.
