- Running out of food, water and fuel are real possibilities on this 3000 mile ocean passage. Sailing the boat is only part of the challenge, we also have to plan carefully to make sure we don't get becalmed and end up drifting for months and running out of supplies. As fill our water tanks in preparation to start our month long voyage, we'll take you behind the scenes and share how we plan our passage and the difficulties of provisioning a boat here in this part of Indonesia.
We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid.

Never ceases to amaze me how good you both are are ‘presenting’ in your videos! Natural yet professional at the same time. Better than any UK TV presenters. Excellent videos thanks
Another fabulous video from Matt & Amy
I believe this is the first Florence video I have seen. You have done a tremendous job of providing realistic, detailed insight of proper planning for ship's stores and weather. Quite, outstanding effort.
I was scanning CZcams for sailing channels that have visited different locations and by far you guys have been there ,love a sailing channel that actually sail!
One of the very best sailing channels out there. Bravo!
Good luck and fair winds for the Indian Ocean Passage!
well good luck Amy and Matt, safe travels and may all your wind and seas be moderate.
You two are inspiring, thank you for sharing your adventures!!!!
Fascinating information, thanks for sharing what most other sailing channels don’t, we love it! 💥👍🏻☺️🙏🏻
Having worked with an aviation customer in Indonesia for five years 2010-2015, I learned very quickly that there is almost always a “paperwork adjustment fee” required (in cash of course) for processing anything related to the government, with sometimes room for negotiation of that fee due to your “maximum amount authorized fo this project” 😁 I found it always best to just grin and bare it, and play along, just like in Mexico and similar places. It actually became a fun game after a while, one just has to add it into one’s financial planning 😁 Worst you can do is try to fight it, or - God forbid - threaten to ‘report them’, either of which can land you in a world of hurt 😩 Hope you two got out ok, will find out in your next episode ⛵️🙏🏻☺️
So glad your finally under way.. you both deserve the very best of seas.. keep calm and sail on
Yes, passage planning is one of my favorite parts of voyaging. The logistics and plotting etc. it is indeed exciting. And I am excited that you are FINALLY getting underway!
Happy your finally free to get back to cruising!! You both have showed us over the years that your great sailors!! Can’t wait to follow this adventure
Fair winds and calm seas ⛵️
To minimise glugging and splashing when pouring liquids from a can, keep the neck of the can uppermost. This allows air to enter freely and you get a continuous almost laminar flow.
You guys are awesome. Learning so much. Thank you.
practical advice for better fishing - the last ten meters of the line should be weighted, small lead "shot" with a diameter of about 6-8 mm are good, pressed directly onto the line with pliers about every half meter. Another option is to use one larger weight on the vertebrae about 2-3 metres before the lure itself. In any case, the weight is necessary, otherwise the lure will be just below the surface or even jumping from the water depending on boat speed. Use as long line as possible. The line must be properly sized because the weight puts a lot of resistance when dragging behind the boat. As an emergency solution, I used a socket wrench as weight (just in case, some that is not really needed) and single big hook (10cm +) with half meter of christmas tree chain stretched thru hook eyelet as lure. Work well for tuna. If you don't have a proper fishing rod, then as an indicator of a bite put an empty closed PET bottle under the last edge over which the line is led before it leaves the stern of the boat. The cordless screwdriver/drill is your friend for winding the line back onto the spool. And don't forget to buy soy sauce and wasabi for sashimi.
Thank you for the tips, we will take that onboard for next time!
Great work guys we appreciate how hard it is to do what you’re doing great work , good planning is manufacturing sheer
Good luck
So interesting to see your detailed planning!
I absolutely love this channel…..so so so much!!
Very interested content. Your Videos are both informative and entertaining to watch. Looking forward to the next one :)
C’mon, there is plenty of Barilla and Cirio in the shop, nothing more is required! 🤣🤣🤣
Good luck you two. I hope all goes well.
Your movies are amazing! They keep me on dreaming! Thanks for that!
Great video. Your channel is a refreshing find within the sea of tired channels that use silly clickbait thumbnails, made-up hype and over dramatize everything to attract viewers.
Thanks! :-)
So glad you are going to continue your journey!
Brilliant... you guys are a very skilfull sailor couple. Wish you the best in your Atlantic crossing on your way back home to England. Bst Rds
Great video guys and some excellent information passed on. Stay safe and fair winds ;-)
Good luck on the long voyage
That was very interesting Amy and Matt. Fairwinds to my favorite sailors!
🌬⛵
Stay safe on your passage and enjoy the crossing!
Keepin' it real. Luck for your travels.
Good luck and safe passage. See you in the next update.
That looks like some well thought out planing, good job and Good Luck 🍀😎👍
Wonderful video, I.m looking forward to watching your preparation pan out!
You both have such a calm, systematic nature and good team work. Your videos make sailing less intimidating for newbies like us. You show us that planning and preparation is everything thank you for sharing this with us. ❤⛵
Perfect Planning Prevents Poor Performance! :-) We're not perfect but we have had a lot of practice now and have learned a lot in the last 5 years of this voyage.
Best of luck, Matt and Amy. May you have good wind in your sail, and Happy times in your horizon
you better enjoy some drinks on board coz you have a long way to go , good luck guys you are the nicest people out there, cheers Alister in Australia .
Very entertaining! Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Best wishes for a safe and enjoyable passage!
Another bomb video thank YOU Florence
You work hard, i mean hard, to do what you do. Excellent vids, hooked fan now lol
I love your videos so much. They're always so informative.
Australian BOM is reporting significant weather changes in the Indian Ocean for the next few months ( Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events) take care.
Well done Florence...Looking forward to follow the trip!
Cheers
I really enjoyed the passage planning it answered many questions I had about the crossing thank you Matt and Amy
I’m so excited about this vid. Finally the day has come! Love how all your vids are so informative. Indian Ocean here they come! Can’t wait to follow the journey.
Very Good video. Thank you.
Have a Safe Trip. And I am looking forward for the next video.
So until next week.
Aloha and Mahalo from the Big Island 🏝of Hawaii 🏝.
Have you considered doing your own bottling or canning? To pasteurize you need to put the bottles in a boiling bath of water for a while. You’d probably do better than a random CZcams comment to learn about it, but it could deal with your canned food provisioning issues.
Terrific information!! You guys make the best video's!!!
I am amazed at what you need to know to safely sail around the world. It is above my pay grade.
We learn as we go. Google is a great research tool!
I have lived in Indonesia for 3 years and know all about the difficulties you experience. Perhaps Thailand would have been a better place to start:
excited and nervous for you both! you will be fine, great preparations
Exciting times 👍👍
A safe Trip and fair winds in the Tradewinds. Lokking forwards to the Pictures of the crossing.
Fair winds! Great video as always
excellent and informative episode. Safe travels to you both. Really good work.
Superb.
Very interesting, informative and engagingly delivered content as ever. I shall be following your crossing; fair winds.
Great rundown. Thanks for this.
Safe travels to you both, love this channel.
This is invaluable information, great to see the reality of passage planning, thank you :)
Good Luck and Fair Winds to you! :)
Another great video guys
Best and most interesting video I've ever seen on ocean passage planning! So glad you guys are finally on the move again! Safe journey 😃
500 litres of water and all that worry about running out. Goodness you need a water maker
How could any fish resist those gorgeous lures
Lol. I can totally relate with the difficulties sourcing tin and dried food in local store in small city in Indonesia 😃😃 good job though👍👍
The locals must love you. For clearing out shelves of tinned foods, before they pop in for something! ;) Seriously. Very good explanation of passage planning and the impact of food pricing and availability. I've not seen that talked about much, by other passage makers on YT.
The local shop owners sure love us, with the travel bans and all the resorts shut they have been struggling to sell the sorts of things that we tourist types buy!
She is smart and beautiful. A lovely companion on a long voyage. ps "and a great cook".
Yous have got me riveted. I'm so impressed with your planning, patience with the Indonesian authorities, ability to stay focused on your master plan, desire to get the most out of your long journey, learn new skills, work towards your common goal and make informative and interesting videos. Question: Do yous anticipate yous will be able / have the time & energy to make videos while crossing the Indian Ocean or are we land lubbers going to be left on tender hooks praying for yous while yous do so? Either way, please put yourselves first and good luck with the next leg of your journey. Thanks, MM.
We can't edit video at sea (it is too rough to sit at a computer and we are too tired from night watches) but we can film and once we get to the other side we will have a lot of footage to edit!
Terima kasih
Best of luck in the crossing!!!
I know which book I’m picking up after I finish the basic sailing book I’m reading now :-)
A very good read is Matthew Fontaine Maury: Scientist Of The Sea, by Francis Leigh Williams. Maury originated the pilot charts in the period just before the American Civil War. The format presented in Cornell's books is the same as originally depicted by Maury. I reckon you meant books to help in planning and navigation, which a biography is not, nonetheless this book is quite interesting. Too often among cruisers, Maury does not get the recognition he deserves.
Such a classy picture in the start ( sorry don’t recall the name it’s what you click on ) a classic!!!
Great video!
Very interesting and helpful, thanks!
Meanwhile me .... this is going to an incredible passage... to our left we see deep blue ocean AS FAR AS YOU CAN SEE, and here on our right is quick trip and walmart just 1/2 mile cuz im uneducated and scared lol
You guys rock ... god be with you 🙏
Good luck guys. 🙂
Thank you for sharing interesting video plenty of tucker there
Nice episode, enjoy Seychelles, my home for many years.
All the west weather for your sail, we live in South Africa and you will be passing through our waters soon
Hi Ludwig, we plan to head for SA in October, hope you are well and safe there now.
@@SailingYachtFlorence hi; we are well, and excited about your visit to our country. When you are here and you want to see what our beautiful country has to offer, feel free to make contact with us. Enjoy your sail
Travel safe. Fair winds to you
Crossing the Indian Ocean. You can call yourselves salty dogs after that one!.
bon voyage
saudades......
Can you do a video on dealing with different Currencies, Love the Channel
That is simple, we just go to the cash point and put the card in when we arrive in a country. ATMs have made getting local currency easy. You just need to make sure you have a card which has low or zero charges for use abroad. Oh you do of course have to work out the exchange rate to understand what is affordable too ;-)
First I wanted to say safe travels. I had a question about your route planning. You do a good job of explaining how seasonal routes and typical winds are determined being averaged using historical data. My question is with global warming and more and more atypical weather patterns taking hold do you find that this has a significant impact on your planning?
We have only been cruising for 5 years so we haven't noticed any gw changes. Also as we move ever onward we don't stay in one place long enough to understand the patterns over several years.
first 😅😄😄 Salam i'm from indonesia sumatra
At sea on a boat under 40’ for 4 weeks...
people need to do that at least once in their life perhaps.
I haven’t... but I think I’d give it a go.
Why not can your own food? If you have the room for the equipment (a pressure canner) it would allow you to take advantage of cheaper local foods. Pickling and dehydrating could help extend shelf life as well without the need for a pressure canner.
Wow! What an absolutely exciting way of life you've chosen!!! You both radiate such joy of life and respect and love towards eachother. And also so very professional when it comes to sailing, which is no game the way you two cross oceans. A couple of questions come to mind whatching your excellent videos: How old are you guys? How do you finance your 5+ year trip? Is it a continous voyage, or do you go back "home" from time to time? And it would be interesting to hear a little 'bout Florence. Is it covered in one of your other videos? (Found some on your written blog, though. And now also your lovely walk around video. Very interesting and impressive.) What about the pandemic? Did you get vaccinated or do you rely on face masks? Or both? Sorry to probe but you really make me want to know more, being sailors too, me and my wife. All the best and stay safe!!!
Hi Peter, In our 30's, not been home since we left in 2016, sounds like you have found the boat tour video, Costs covered here: czcams.com/video/5TDSDDU-5lg/video.html , how we finance it covered here: czcams.com/video/3mTzftkYIw4/video.html , Thankful that we were able to get vaccinated in Seychelles.
@@SailingYachtFlorence Thanks for answering. So nice of you.
PS. Should you by chance get lost on your journey and end up in Sweden, just drop us a line. We'd be more than happy to host you! / All the best! Peter & Anna
maybe 2024 ;-)
HEllo, great video. One question I`d like to ask. I noticed that you covered your mast in the saloon. Why is that? For asthetic reason or does it have something to do with water insulation somehow?
What about rice? Enjoying the videos and wish you a bon voyage.
I'm planning for 2 week passage on ICW and I'm taking 500 liters also!!!🤣
Fair winds.
The Robert Redford Movie "All is Lost" popped into my head. My wife and I watch it and i looked at her after the movie ended and said "he was rescued" Someone said no he didn't survive. I replied Glass Half Full.
Dealing with the Indonesian government to leave? Bribes? Days of iffy paperwork? Sheesh…. I wish you the best. Interested in your fresh water catchment during your passage. You haven’t mentioned the possibility of 🏴☠️ pira- -s. Do you have the ability to defend yourself? I have worried for you this entire trip. May God be with you. Texas
thank you for posting such detailed informations regarding everything, it's really helpful for some! i wish you good winds for your crossing! please reply if you can! how fast does your boat go in winds of 10-13 knots??? thank you !
We plan on averaging between 5 and 6 knots, down wind in 10 -13 knots we should do about 5.
What happens if you don't check out and just leave?
Love your vlogs. I'm contemplating a similar life so I'm curious with you being away so long, how do you deal with taxes? Do you even have to do them? Thanks for putting up such great stuff & best of luck on you voyage!
Tax returns can be done online. From the UK we still have to fill them out even if we don't earn enough money to pay tax.
I heard "Eat, Sleep, Sail, and Mate" 😳
