- Two boats means a race, we find company sailing offshore across the ocean and race Florence against some larger boats as we charge southwards. We were all racing to position ourselves safely for the southerly storm which is brewing between us and our destination. In this episode we will share with you some of the weather routing decisions we had to make in one of the most complex wind and weather areas of our voyage around the world so far. We are trying to sail past Madagascar before Cyclone season.
We have been sailing around the world for over 5 years after setting off from England in 2016 on board our 37ft sail boat Florence. Join us as we share the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, Sailing offshore across the Oceans and exploring remote locations with our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid.

Like a good thriller, always ending leaving you in suspense until the next episode. Great stuff.
Always a pleasure to see a sailing channel sailing, explaining route planning, explaining good reasons to motor in what seems to be perfectly good light weather etc. Top stuff
I wonder why so many channels are avoiding all the sailing technicalities while the technicalities and boat work make the sailing channel a sailing channel, and not just a another travel vlog.
I agree , Is good to see the sailing and why decissions are made
Agree best descriptive sailing channel I know Marty Australia
Agree, and I presume it's because they both know how to sail from a racing background. The explanation about being able to position for the coming windshift is directly from a racer's understanding. Most other sailing channels aren't 'sailors' in the same sense. Yes, they might (in some instances anyway 😅) know how to trim the sails reasonably but not much else!
Congrats on the channel in general, this part is especially interesting to us as we'll be navigating that part of the Indian Ocean fairly soon!
Love the tactical discussion and the insight into weather, current and route planning. Really interesting
Long time watcher, first time commenter. But had to say that in addition to the wonderful videography and great narrative, I loved all the passage planning information. It really distinguishes you guys from most other sailing channels. Well done!
Of all the boats I watch, and it's a substantial few, I think I'm in love with Florence. She's a wonderful little boat, sailed well by two good captains, there is no crew. I am so seriously impressed by the captain's and ship.
My favorite sailing couple is back with another amazing adventure! Thanks for sharing your lives aboard your beautiful sailboat ⛵️ 😃 sometimes I feel like I’m part of the crew lol
Exactly how I feel, I look forward to every episode.
Same here
What a nice couple, love you guys. Definitely my favorites also👍
@@FalconBusa , After a 6yr circumnavigation Matt & Amy will have a lifetime of memories, as my wife & I did in 1990’s
Back in the 1970s and early 80s I lived near Richards Bay. We used to ride our bikes to the beach and swim, and then our parents would come pick us up. Learned to sail at the Richards Bay Yacht Club.
The output gets better with every episode guys, thank you so much. This was so interesting, watching the planning and strategies. Looking forwards to next time. ❤
Your sails are always beautifully trimmed. Great to see.
You Guys are incredibly good sailors. thank you great stuff.
7:30 Jakarta time. Every other Saturday, I look forward to just laying in bed, with no work to do, and watch Florence.
It's the only channel I wait for.
Pity we can only like 👍 once I'd like to like much more often, great sailing
Absolutely love all your videos. Amy & Matt thank you for taking me along. 🙌
Thank you so much! You are both truly inspiring. Just real Sailing by real sailers
You are my favorite sailing channel out of all the hundreds on CZcams, thank you for sharing! I particularly like how you explained the thought processes behind the decision making, so incredibly interesting to see this unique perspective. Wishing you all the best from Columbus, OH.
CLIFF hanger! :-) so look forward to your video drops.
I enjoy all your videos. But I love these techniques you share. I don’t sail. But I love hearing about it. Thank you
Favorite sailing channel ever!!!
Just wanted to say how much I enjoy each of your sailing episodes. Your information on passage planning is just what I find most interesting. Without a doubt, you are my favourite sailing channel.
Congrats on your travels! Living the dream
As a non-sailor I find your videos fascinating and so very informative. The photography and commentary are engaging and professional. Well done and good luck.
This was a great example of what you have to do to get places in one piece. It's not all electric motors and bikinis.
Such dramatic music, hats off to your fab editing skills !!! Best story tellers of any sailing channel.... be safe, Loni & Al ❤️📷📷👍👍❗️
😊🇦🇺 good luck with your sailing
I loved this episode. REAL Sailing! ⛵💙
Your racing experience shows. Great tactical thinking and wonderfully explained with good use of graphics. Really get the felling of being there.
Really enjoyed this maybe the best vlog of all so much sailing content. Opened up the whole experience, such a joy thank you
I look forward to each post! You guys inspire me and thanks for keeping it real and NOT sugar coating anything. Can't wait to see the next episode.
Lovely video, looking forward to the next one, hope the it wasn't too bouncy!
Hello from 🇺🇸. Recently found your channel. So lovely to follow your amazing adventures. Thank you💙
Great video. You have me feeling anxious for your next video. Sounds like it's going to be exciting.
Love your videos, not being a sailor I always learn something new but the travels and the journey is what I love.
Really interesting the consideration required for the wind, currents and boat positioning.
The visuals really helped👌.
What a wonderful name ‘Florence’ is .
She’s a Lovely Boat.
The sailing cruisers that actually know what they are doing. I appreciate your videos. Best of luck on your adventures. Best regards from Jarle
Thanks 👍
You guys are brilliant…

Great update guys, looking forward to the next one! Stay safe.
Love that you share your thougts about the forecast.
Great video to see all aspects of trip ,Florence flying along brilliant job !!
we love your enthusiasm for sailing
Brilllllliant! Thanks for sharing 👍
One of the best episodes with the planning, contingencies, and sorting it all out with all the uncertainties. Great job and much appreciated.
Brilliant!!! What…actual sailing on a sailing channel?? Finally a breathe of fresh air!!
Once again you both captured my curiosity and have given me a glimpse on what it must be like to sail the oceans.
Florence looked majestic gliding, as she cut through the water. And her sails stretched wide. You showcased her beautifully.
Love the explanation of your route strategy. These are just a few reasons why you both & Florence are my numero uno sailing channel.
Thank you. In 5 and a half years we have never ever wished for any other boat other than Florence when out sailing. At anchor a bit more space would be nice, but she is perfect when sailing. Thanks for your kind comment :-)
A most excellent sailing channel. Well done and thanks for your efforts. Greetings from South Africa.
Love the made call near the end
Your storytelling is getting really good! Thank you for sharing your adventures with us:)
Though I would never step on a boat, I LOVE your videos!
You guys are the best sailing channel on YT.....
Thank you.
Excellent vid. I dearly hope the southerlies don't build the seas too much. Bless you Florence keep those poms safe. GO YOU BEAUTIFUL BOAT Fair winds cheers n beers Marty Australia
I only wish we could take a watch for you to help with your sleep deprivation, or cook you a solid meal, Goodness knows you deserve a rest and a moment to enjoy some food. Keep up the great seamanship and see you both in the next episode.
A year or so ago I watched every You Tube sailing channel.
With Covid I found myself getting bored and stopped watching nearly all of them. Especially the Americans sitting on million dollar boats on tropical islands moaning about not being able to get home.
Two channels survived my cull… yours and Project Atticus.
You are a real inspiration and I hope in a few years to be able to follow in your footsteps.
My only hope for you is when you get back to the UK you head off back round the world again. Aside from friends and family there is nothing worth being here for anymore :(
Thanks, One of our favourites but actually one of our least successful videos!
@@SailingYachtFlorence see that’s why you are my favorite sailing folks you even reply… I’m touched thank you. I’m guessing the lack of views is probably because it’s not fluff and more of interest to people who want to sail there.
Power On ! You Two! Best of luck - and stay safe!
great video guys...stay safe!
Great to see you !! Hope all goes well and you beat the bad weather!! Not a place for taking chances!! Fair winds ⛵️
Well done! Look forward to seeing how the southerlies played out.
I was just so engaged the entire video. Love the explanations with what you do and why. Very exciting sailing!
Wow, I feel the apprehension and tension. Of all the passages that I have made, that is one that I would just as soon avoid!! Wow, pins and needles.
I am sitting on my own boat and wishing I had treadmaster as non-slip on my decks, as you guys do :). Would die for your nesting dingy too. Love your boat and channel.
Thanks for sharing this. Following your journey to South Africa with keen interest
Always great to catch up with you and nice story telling, as well as informative. Thanks 👍
The windwaves of the southerlies are notorious and have always been. Many unsuspecting ships have had real problems with them. When Delos was sailing north, they talked about it enough for me to want to really look at it. It is a combo of current and wind that makes the windwaves go to spectacular heights. There is a generally three day pattern which varies of course, as weather always does. Many vessels jump from port to port, catching the winds at the right directions and velocities. I will definitely be paying attention if I get the chance to go. The trip would have been much more relaxing for you if so many places hadn't been shut down by Covid. Delos had spent a lot of time in Madagascar and their theme song is from a Band in Madagascar .
Another great video, thanks.
Waiting impatiently for next leg into Richards Bay. I was one of Richards Bays engineers back in the 70's. Would be nice to see it again and hear your comments. I live in
London now. Please post ASAP.
Always very entertaining. Love your channel.
wonderful video, completely took me away from a crazy day at work today. Thanks
As an American whose ancestors sailed over from England, Scotland, and Germany in the 1700’s on small wooden boats with out even a clue about a weather forecast, I am reminded of the risks they took to cross the Atlantic. Even today with boats that are hundreds of time safer and have modern weather and navigation tools at the ready, it’s still something to really pay attention to and it still contains an amount of risk. It’s safe for some value of that word, but it’s not zero risk. It’s obvious these guys give the sea and Mother Nature her due respect. Sail on!
You guys did such a great job showing this journey, how you analyzed the weather, and why you made the decisions you did. Thanks for sharing! 😊
Thank you for the sailing lessons and all the things big and small about weather that I never thought of. I am glad that I got to sail virtually through your views. Love you guys!
Great to see this guys i am very , fond, jaelous, and most of all very proud of you. Nice footage! Love this and the best of all circumnavigators!
and thats sailing in a nut shell .great video
You two are the best I'm sitting here in South Florida thinking how fun it would be Navigating to South Africa. I really enjoy your thread. My grandmother's name was Florence and your boat name makes me remember and think of her so for that thank you. Don't take any chances you have lots of time.
chances
An extremely interesting video, thanks. I've sailed since I was 14 and had a yearning to be sailing since I was a very young child.
You guys are such a good team! To watch you operate is a pleasure. To see the experience and skills come through. You're my favourite sailing channel and I'm already dreading you reaching home. Take care.
A Real sailing channel !. Well done again guys
Been waiting for a new one!!! Thanks guys!!!
Love the videos, from a New Zealand watcher, keep up the good work you legends!
Beautiful video. When you are a long way past fresh food you should think about sprouting some pulses and beans.
All of your videos have been great for us but this was one of your best - nailbiting even! Looking forward to the next. Hope you're both well.
you left me back at the nav station watching the weather coming in, feeling it deep in my soul like only if you've spent week after week at sea
This channel is outstanding in every way.......just fantastic !
So nice seeing you again. Been watching alot of your episodes. Was eager to watch episode 121 when it came out. Stay safe and nice to keep us up to date. Watching from Malta.
what a jump... full blown production. . passage tactics/ sail plan is the highlight for me... i want to see experts tackle the hardest passages..
It's worth waiting for each new episode ! Beautifully done ❤️
That was an amazing vlog, so informative with weather charts etc, Thank you.
Thanks again for a fantastic story.
Great job on this video
Thank you both. I learn so much.
Great video! You made it easy for someone who knows nothing about sailing to follow your journey. A very dramatic ending too, nice cliff hanger!
Godspeed Florence
Always interesting and beautifully shot, thanks guys!
The best sailing channel
Love you two!
Glad you avoided the cyclone or (s) that tore up Madagascar and Mozambique /Malawi. Surprising the calm er weather you have gone through. Hope you win the race to Richards Bay. Regards.
I love that you all show all the real sailing weather!!!!
That was a great video (as are all, but this one was particularly good.) You could rename it and sell it as "Strategic Wind Management." Outstanding discussion of your strategy and the information you are incorporating.
Ohh, a Cliffhanger!
Really enjoy your videos, glad you add the ups and downs!😉
Thank you so much for making the videos!
