- Problems and failures, sailing a small boat 3000 miles offshore across an ocean as a couple is not easy. We had a roller coaster ride of emotions, after overcoming engine troubles and sailing for 24 hours we eventually had to make the gut wrenching decision to turn around and head back. This is the story of our failed first attempt to cross the Indian Ocean, what should have been the start of a month at sea turned out not to be, find out what caused us to turn back in this episode.
We have been sailing around the world for over 5 years after setting off from England in 2016 on board our 37ft sail boat Florence. Join us as we share the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, Sailing offshore across the Oceans and exploring remote locations with our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid.

Turning back is hard, but I never met a sailor who regretted trying again later! I have heard about a few who didn’t, but they didn’t make it. Playing it safe is always the wise choice!
@ "I've known lots of voyaging yachties"
where do you meet all these voyaging yachties?
Great decision. When you feel it's not right, turn back and that's what you did. Thus is a true sailing channel😎🌬⛵⚓
It's been said that the worst decision you can make is none at all. You're right about the "feel" too.
@ Not having a good day, mate?
@@davidbrayshaw3529 hope you are doing OK today
@@silviofontana5144 Very much, thankyou, Silvio. I hope that you and your loved ones are doing the best that you can to find joy in such troubled times.
My dad had a 33’ Islander (wooden sloop) when I was growing up. When I graduated high school and left home, my parents lived aboard and sailed in the Bahamas for 4 years. They are both in heaven now, but your channel reminds me so much of the times we sailed. Thank you! 🐠
Sometimes we must respect previous experiences and our feeling. Take care and enjoy your time.
Always listen to that little voice. glad you are safe.
That beautiful coastline just doesnt want you to leave.. I cant blame the sand.. you two are just fun to br around
A new upload. Awesome! My favourite sailing channel.
Thanks for sharing your frustrated attempts. It good to see that its not all sunshine and roses. I feel your pain. When its right it will happen. Cheering for you. Thanks again.
Thank you for taking us on your journey! Don’t give up!
We watch a few sailing youtubers. Your storytelling tops them all. We've learned more from you than any other. Midweek we find ourselves talking about where you are, and wondering aloud - have they made it out in the Indian yet? Pray you are well. Good decision on going back.
Totally agree.
@@franciscoeliasbermudezmole8536 so do I.
Bwa ha ha ha!
If you follow them on IG you know they’ve already made it... these posts are looks back at the voyage, not in real time.
Wishing you all the wind you need, and calm seas for your passage….
Excellent storytelling, superb filming, enjoyable personalities, salty sailors, seaworthy vessel. What more could we ask for? (Besides a bit of breeze). I enjoyed the background music as well, it was as pensive as the crew. Very entertaining.
So I just recently came across your channel and this is one of the first "new" videos that were put in my feed. And obviously these I watch very consciously (opposed to "skipping" through the "old" videos). It's just a joy to watch you! I really appreciate the honesty about your feelings with such a task, it comes across very authentic!
Nice to see you being so honest, and great music background as you started out on the blue
Old Florence really needed a shave and a haircut there. South Africa soon!
Thank you for sharing your experience. I love the rawness an honesty of your videos. Any sailor can learn from your channel. Keep sharing your story 😀
As I’ve stated before, I am not a sailor. I’ve always had this romantic notion that it’d be great just to set sail and sail away….
I really enjoy your updates and that you share your journey both the positives and the low sides. Sailing appears to me to be bloody hard but rewarding work. Then again, if you’re doing what you love, then you’re never at work. I really appreciate the finer details you two add to your videos such as all the preparation prior to departure and the reasoning behind every decision and sail change. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing the very real decisions, emotions and work that play into a long ocean crossing. Your filming and sharing in Indonesia have been top notch and so stunningly beautiful. Hang in there & (fingers crossed) Fair Winds!
Just watched your latest video, sorry that there is no wind. I do pray for wind and that you are safe. Press on have fun, be careful. You have many people routing for you.
@ I don’t pray to the wind I pray for guidance from God. He if it’s His will makes it happen. Thanks and God bless, I will pray you have good wind!
Fantastic guys, inspirational videos , watched all. Very well done, best sailing series on youtube.
Great to see you turn back,
One Life, One Search,
Peace Out.
I found Florence in March 2020 when we all had to face something we were not familiar with… The covid pandemic and the anxiety that came with it. Finding new ways to clear your mind and to “escape” the reality, even for 20 minutes. I am so glad you guys helped me thru this period by taking me on board on your fabulous journeys. I finally “caught up” with you and look forward to the next adventures and I hope to welcome you home in Portsmouth when you both completed the journey of a lifetime…. Thank you!
What an excellent video! Thanks for sharing your experience!
You are such a lovely couple...Its always nice to understand your predicaments and difficult decisions!
Turning back can also be called: Playing it safe, because life is so precious!
Well done Florence
Cheers
A big part of my week. Thanks for sharing.
We love all your videos🥰. Wishing you have wind in your sails soon and a safe passage💖
I always wait for your videos. And pray you are safe while waiting to hear your journey.
Followed from episode one. Becoming one of the best sailing CZcams channels. You deserve more followers.
Thanks for sharing! I love reality...not perfect.
Good decision. Always heed your sixth sense. Sure seems you were being messaged! Bon voyage when you get clear!
Lovely lovely couple doing great and wondrous things! Live to sail another day mates! Nothing worthwhile comes easy as you both well know. I concur with your choice to return and regroup. Thank you so much for sharing your once in a lifetime experience with us all!💪👌👊
“Not such a bad place to hang out” No kidding! It beats rainy dull UK even if you were a bit frustrated being stuck there.😎
Your teamwork will carry you through, being smart to wait for weather, knowing the SE Trades blow this time of year, getting SSW is paramount, possibly picking up the trades around 8 South. We crossed the Indian Ocean in the 1980s. Light airs around the equator plagued us too.
Just started watching you. Am a Great Lakes sailor with a little time in the Caribbean. Rooting for your Indian Ocean crossing!
Hard decision I’m sure - but your experience told you the best course of action, and you did it. Good job 👍
That must have been so frustrating after all the build up to go, but looks like you made the right decision. I always find when plans change, opens up new opportunities. Can see were you are now, so it all worked out. Sail safe
You can't force the weather, can't predict it accurately and depend on it intensely, it will teach you to be patient and test your patience then suddenly be your best friend and companion !
Just read a book until the wind comes back. How hard is that?
@ Could be days, could be weeks and in that time you are at the mercy of the tides. They knew the weather windows were weeks apart and they didn't provision for weeks at sea, the only real option is to go back to where they can drop anchor and then read a book or two.
One of your very best videos - we have been watching you for ever. Thanks for sharing all this stuff - usually we have a Friday night curry then catch up with you guys!!
I love your channel, you two really make your videos interesting and enjoyable.
Thank you~🌬🌊⛵🌍 Fair winds~
Top videography and sound work. Pleasure to watch, thanks
Cruising isn't a time table , That's what its all about - Enjoy ... Fair winds .
I was excited when you started out but I think you were wise to go back. So I can look forward to a second start.
Wishing to you a good safe wind for a comfortable crossing.
I wish you guys better wind and overall weather conditions on the next crossings, good luck and lots of Aloha !
Wow, the editing and narration was excellent. I was immersed in the video photography as your journey started.
Good decision, wishing you safe wind for the next. The shots at the end are beautiful.
Love your videos, esp knowing that you raced small boats in your younger lives, like me. Not sure if I will have a chance to get and sail a "big" boat but that's why we have dreams. Fair winds...
Bummer! Good luck Matt and Amy!
Your editing has gotten amazing.
So well-done of you to show your honest feelings about the unavoidable downs as well as ups. You will surely make it finally. Wishing you all the best! (Ron of sv Spirit, totally locked down due to Covid in Langkawi)
Hi Ron, Great to hear from you, sorry things aren't great where you are, we hope the situation improves for you soon. At the risk of spoiling the next few episodes, we are typing this from Seychelles. :-)
It could have been worse, dear friends. At least you're safe and sound, and Florence is still in good shape. You'll get on that wind and your sail will be full of that fresh Eastern winds. Safe sailing for you dears
Such an honest video. I really enjoy your episodes. I will be out there one day, and I learn so much from the both of you. cheers
Good luck on your passage! Stay safe
Hello, I echo the good comments below. The mental fortitude you BOTH have is unusual and amazing! New sailors take note...it's days of challenge followed by hours of fun, and then it starts again, never knowing what the day will bring. Congratulations to you for providing hundreds of others your experience of a lifetime! For me, well, I am glad I'm a power boater, but will always for rooting for you guys on your travels. Bravo!
I know the feeling. I am trying to cross the gulf of Mexico to get our new Tayana 52 home to Florida. Our first attempt failed miserably. Had engine failure 150nm off the coast. Then electronics went crazy and a massive storm hit us. We had to call the US Coast Guard who towed us back to texas trough the storm. The storm was with us the whole way back. The tow did more damage to our boat than the storm did. We are now sitting back in texas waiting on estimates for the insurance company. But a good guess is probably 100.000 dollars in damage. It sucks, but at least you guys are safe and your boat is ready for another go at it. We have at least 6 months of work to get done be fore we can set sail again. Good luck and we will be watching.
So sorry about the damage to your Tayana during the tow. I am parked on the Nueces Bay, Portland, Texas. Wishing you luck in your repair and eventual sail to Florida. Jeff
@@papajeff5486 thanks. The biggest issue right now is getting contractors for the estimates. Been trying to get them for 6 weeks now.
Another fantastic video. Only sorry that you didn’t make it yet. Fingers crossed for next time. Am now whistling on your behalf!
I am amazed you manage to capture something like that on camera, I'd be cameras down and worrying. Very cool and collected! Well done!
Thanks Tom, you understand the filming dilemma! Luckily with two of us onboard when one is stressing about things, the other can sometimes film.
Blessings and Smooth Sailing ⛵🙏 🤩
Hi guys, I love your attitudes and life philosophies. Indeed, sad to turn back, but clear thinking likely the better choice. Keep the faith.
Big cheers
jerry
If it’s not right, it’s not right. So glad you guys are safe.
Good luck guys. It's nice to watch a sailing channel that actually sails to new places. Be safe, see ya next week....
Damn! I feel so gutted for you. Hope it works out for you soon. With hope and best wishes from the Isle of Wight.
You guys are Soo AMAZING and INTREPID ✌️❤️🙏
You did the correct thing , it's how you both felt . I've sailed around the Seychelles area , well motored.
Have a drink .
That spot is gorgeous!
Must be so frustrating for you guys. Wishing you fair winds and following seas.
I just love your videos…they seem like a representation of life itself. We spend our lives fearing strong winds yet when we get older we realise that we spent 95% of our lives trying to find wind. We fear failure built then discover that it is the necessary and vital step to success. We hate the rain but then discover that it’s the thing that propels us to our destination. You guys are amazing ! Brilliant…keep your spirit alive…as a retired CEO i can say with authority,,,you have got it! Just keep doing what you are doing and everything will fall in the right place. I just wish that at your age i understood that…at your age I could hardly tie a shoelace together! You are such cool dudes!
If you don't do anything wrong How can you do anything right A famous philosopher once said Wiggenstein
hi Guys, first time commenting here, i found this channel the other day and binge watched quite a few episodes ... i like the content and the explanations of whats going on and i highly rate the videos. But your turn around decision wasnt made lightly so brush it off, regroup and and relax a few days recheck everything and then kick the atlantic in the proverbial ballsack. You weren't defeated you made a wise and conscious decision . good luck with your next attempt ... i cant wait to watch
Good on use I like watching your adventures I’m 76 and wish I was younger to do what you do😊👍🇦🇺🇦🇺
Well. It is a beautiful place to be on standby.
Good decisions are made on experience.........which you both have.........good luck.
You broke my heart. Godspeed.
I’m sailing a Sadler 34 fin keel with my girlfriend we’re at the heel of Italy waiting for wind to Albania, we started just before Covid commenced, so we were so lucky, I’m really enjoying your adventures and your marvellous video presentations , I’ve been scraping my hull for the last few days and my breathing is becoming more controlled and I’m now able to swim under water for longer, it’s not all lounging around in sunshine is sailing, thanks for sharing your wisdom, experience and strength of spirit, you’re both very inspirational.
Thanks, it is not all easy (especially when you try to film it too) but it is a big adventure and life is about adventure :-)
Really enjoying your channel hope your crossing is successful
You two put so much careful consideration into your planning... Very impressive... Maybe some additional propulsion like solar into a small electric motor or Viking style rowing?
A modular dinghy - that's very clever!
i realy enjoy folowing your jurney i felt so sorry for you both when you had to turn back but things happen that are out of anyones control
Best wishes from South Africa!
I though tabout you literally today ) Ty for the video update
A good decision on time is better than the best decision too late. Live to fight another day is not cowardly. New subscriber here & will PATIENTLY wait to watch you succeed.
as a patron of you all, we have a very similar story lol. spent last 3.5 years building our bus to travel the continent all to end up back home after 2 months of breakdowns. we have left again 2 weeks ago and three breakdown later we are just forging on.We ended up in a few beautiful places in arizona though. so keep on keepin on, were rooting for ya
If at first you don't succeed, try try again. We hope you find many more beautiful places (and need less time in garages!)
Bad luck , let’s hope the weather improves for you
Great episode
This happened to me once in the Channel Islands off the Southern California coast. I ended up jumping directly to the starter solenoid to start the motor. Ultimately it was necessary to rewire completely from cockpit ignition switch on with larger gauge wire. Did the same with the glow plug switch.
Hi Greg, a re-wire is coming just as soon as we can get somewhere that sells the fatter gauge wire, preferably tinned.
Not comparing adventures, just saying that I strongly identify with the nervousness before setting off, I felt the same before a long (for me) solo sail. But once the sails are set, amazing! Well done you two and I’m waiting with bated breath for the next instalment.
You are fantastic storytellers. It is a great pleasure to meet you again. You are granting me a true voyage across the Ocean, even if you are anchored at a small, or big coast of the Pacific Islands, or you visit an Indonesian city for a while.
Amy looks calm, but is she really?
Glad you guys are doing well at least.
Did everyone else cheer when it started?
Short the solenoid…simple!
Hi, you might find that your starter battery was ok? the chances of both battery banks not working at the same time is small, Might be worth trying the terminal connection : take off both terminals at battery, with sandpaper sand the terminal and terminal connertor, then put it back on the battery, it might work with the old battery. cheers
That's rough but the right decision to make under the circumstances. As hard as it is you don't want to get impatient now and end up in a bad situation. I lived in Alaska for 50 years and worked with a lot of old school Alaskan bush pilots. They said the 180 degree turn was how you survived flying in Alaska. I kept this firmly in mind for the 20+ years I have spent sailing the coast of Alaska. Good luck! Thanks for the video! Don't get impatient and leave before the conditions are okay. : )
As a former ship captain, and with an eye on SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) I am somewhat surprised that you stow and tie down your tender over one of your potential escape routes; the forward hatch.
You may be amused to know that the ad that CZcams made me sit through, in order to watch your latest episode, was a devise to trap feral hogs (a big problem for farmers in Texas). Couldnt have been further from sailing in the Indian Ocean :)
Love your dinghy
This video is so inspirational!
Fail? I see a lot of tenacity and creative thinking backed by experience.
The engine won't start. 4:12 - you fail to give up and succeed in starting it.
At 7:30 you clearly succeed in knowing (and explaining) your mental limitations. I loved this part! I have not crossed an ocean and you both placed me into the middle of one. Now, I'm viewing this in the mountains. Your storytelling has taken me someplace I can barely imagine
The map/graphic at 10:45 is perfect! It successfully illustrates what the narration is describing. It is simple, uncluttered and yet answers the questions of, "Hey them islands are that way. Why are you going this other way?"
I really, loved Amy's explanation at 14:15 of squalls
I see a lot of successes
Happy Trails and Fair Winds (proper knottage from the desired direction)!
you have conquered one of the most difficult things to do - make a decision to stop - reevaluate and, reset. I have spent years as a principal of a sailing school trying to impart those very concepts - it's actually a nearly impossible thing for a young man to do. An excellent read of your situation - and for mine - a great result. Just one little thing - that's not a FAIL - that's an outstanding call. BZ to both of you. and as Amy says a warm pacific island in the tropics is not exactly torture.
If it makes you feel better I turned back only 16 miles into my recent journey (short 100nm coastal passage) followed a storm out then wind dropped huge seas remained no wind to take me where i needed to get in the time frame I had. First time in my life I started to feel seasick. Defeating at the time but the coffee in the morning in a calm anchorage was bloody fantastic.
Good luck on the next passage ( that you have already now done most likely) in that case congratulations!!!!
You two do a great deal very well However batteries have to be looked after and once they go flat there life is short. Now thanks for sharing your adventures, I follow all videos. Wonderfull
I hope steady moderate winds are coming to you soon!
Awesome! Like this video
There's a lot of electronic parts on any boat. You really should have a good voltage meter. If you had a voltage meter, you could have figured out the problem in 5 minutes.
I'm glad you figured it out. Stay safe and happy sailing.
