- Battling bureaucracy to check out on our boat, this is the most difficult process we have ever faced to leave. Leaving a country by yacht is not as simple as walking through the airport and getting your passport stamped on the way. Our challenge is to manage it without being forced to pay a bribe. This is just yet another challenge as part of sailing Florence across the Indian Ocean.
We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfil our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean and off the grid.

That click when starting the engine sounds like a broken solenoid (just doesn't have a good contact patch), either hit it a few times and try again or you'll need to take it apart and clean it. I once fixed it by glueing a small piece of aluminium so that the solenoid contact would go further.
Hi Toms, Thanks that is an interesting point, we'll do a bit more research into that. The solenoid on our starter motor looks like a sealed unit though.

Does it look like the starter motor on page 33 within the below catalogue?
It definitely isn't one I've seen before, but I think that item 8 "Holder, Magnetic switch" serves the same purpose as a solenoid on a typical starter.

Yes it does. We are an N4.38. At the risk of spoiling the next episode we are now up and running with a new battery. However we are not convinced that was the only problem so we are always happy to learn more about how things work, ready to diagnose why they have stopped working next time. I wish you safe passage guys. One thing you might want to look at getting is cargo cart that folds up with the big rubber wheels on it. I read Hal Roth's book "After 50,000 miles" years ago. He complained about the bureaucracy involved in entering and departing several countries on his circumnavigations. It was so bad he seriously considered just forging his own documents and he was sailing around the world in the 60's. Doesn't sound like it's got any better, seems like it's even worse. I was thinking of border bureaucracy lately and how that is going to be a big challenge for me where it is much more complicated on a boat (currently travelling by land). I am particularly challenged by stupid, nor have I done particularly well with corruption. It is helpful to see a young couple who accept it as another cost or challenge. Well done.

Howdy Guys, you can put a spanner or screw driver (any conductor) between the terminals of the solenoid and it will provide power to the starter motor unless, for some reason your batteries are flat. If batteries are flat you may have a decompression lever to help you turn over the engine. You can also remove an injector and start the engine on one cylinder (if a 2 cylinder engine) Do you have a hand crank capability? Hope things work out for you. Cheers ,Rob

I partially agree with you. However, exit stamps in the passport are absolutely must have. The next country will most likely not accept entrance, as it would be seen as you fled the previous country illegally.
Next I would like to clear is customs. Just to not to be chased down by their military.

Maybe I can give you a tip mate.
Be mentally prepared to not have enough photocopies required of your documents. If you have 30 copies, they want 31. That’s just basic rules🙄.
When you go to find a place that provides (hugely overpriced) copies, I pretended that I’m on a hunt for a huge machine gun😁
Remember, do all those steps with a fake smile, as smile solves problems better than anger

Probably impossible. The light is so weak that you'd need a very long exposure. And long exposures don't work on a moving yacht bobbing about on an ocean.

Great video, very informative and maybe shows the future of sailing/travelling bureaucracy wise and also confirms that having an electric motor with a large battery bank and solar array is DEFINITELY worth the money, especially near the equator.

Seychelles are wonderful. Our suggestions for places you would want to checkout:
Praslin:
- Anse Lazio, especially for sunset
-Vallée de Mai with the largest coconouts in the world, that are also the national symbol (the park is like a Glasshouse in a botanic garden)
- You can make a day trip to Curieuse from northern Praslin, there they have a wonderful turtoise sanctuary. (They love visitors that give them neck scratches)
- Diving (at least for us) was better in Praslin than Mahe, however a lot of corals are dead and there are few sharks (the government killed many after some attacks on swimmers 10 years ago). You still have swarms of colerful fish but it might not be able to compete with Indonesia.
Mahe:
- Morne Seychelles National Park (trekking up the mountains on foot and visit an old tea factory by car)
- Anse Soleil beach a nice uncrowded beach on the west side (if you see a dog couple black and browne, give them a cuddle from us)
La Digue (our most favourite island)
- Rent a bike, almost no cars on the island
- Get a guide for an island trekking tour, it is worth it!!
- Anse Source d'Argent (if you head south from the beach during low tide, through hip heigh water for a couple of minutes, you will reach a beautiful hidden beach where you have good chance of being the only ones around)
- Anse patates a small but beautiful beach in the north
You will need a car on Mahe to get around. Driving is a bit scary, because often locals tend to stay in the middle of the narrow roads. So don't move to the side to early or they will just stay in the middle. It is better adviced to play a small game of chicken and stay quite in the center yourself until both agree to move to their sides.
This adivce might sound strage right now, but trust us, it will become handy once you drive around on the island. ;-)

when I first worked in Indonesia in 1988, it was rp890 for U$1. today is rp14,300!

Your decision to delay departure until there was adequate wind to see you start your crossing, was in my book, the right one. I learned long ago not to set an agenda, the elements NEVER read it anyway. However, your agenda has already been set by, The Seasons. I'm confident that, when you do decide to "go for it" it will be a considered, correct decision. Here's wishing you as enjoyable a journey as is possible.

I really know that in Padang, West Sumatra, the bureaucracy is very complicated, especially for newcomers using private boats. The story will be different if you use an airplane because the airport in Padang is an international airport....If you are at the marina in Jakarta or Bali it might be easier.....Thank you for visiting Indonesia....Goodbye, Happy sailing...By the way u have AIS device on your sailing ship? Why do you want to track them? The Seychelles attracts wealthy visitors who travel by boat, and it has made them a target for Somali pirates. The pirates have in the past have seized yachts close to Seychelles. This nice couple would be insane to tell anyone their route. The wealthy can afford armed security.
