I can't wait for your comparison video next week, Jake!
I did it, thanks dude! Your video really helped, I was not confident.
Recently I've been getting gameboy mod video recommendations. Thanks to your videos I felt comfortable enough mod an old gameboy advanced with a V5 laminated screen and new shell and buttons.
Just did this mod today and your step by step tutorial helped alot, thank you!
hey man thanks so much for making this video, with it i was able to do the solderless version and make the red and white gameboy i always wanted. thanks again!
Relatively new subscriber here, I just followed this to mod my friends' GBA and it was perfect, thank you for the easy to follow tutorial!
Welcome aboard!
I just swapped my screen in following this video. tysm!! 🙏
After reviewing all the available options and watching your videos (and generally doing hours of research online), I've decided to get this kit. I think I'm lucky to have an original GBA that's barely been used. I think it used to be my cousin's or something but he never used it and it's been sitting in a box in a closet for 20 years. I still have my SP but I feel like it's too small for my adult hands so I much prefer the original GBA shell.
Hopefully it goes well.
i’m glad you mentioned you were releasing your ips roundup soon, i was close to just buying a kit but i’m glad i didn’t so i can wait
I’m hoping to release it next Friday but it is a beefy boy
Banger video as always! I'm about to buy another one of this kit to mod my second GBA, but I think I'm staying with the laminated version, the only downside for me is having to solder on the back of the screen, definitely anxiety inducing specially with my crappy 5$ soldering iron
Flux will definitely help with quicker soldering!
@@JakeSimmons
I’m thinking of buying this one because I have never owned a gameboy advance despite it having some games I love and would like to mod the one I’m getting to be nice but I both don’t have a soldering iron and even if I went and got one I have never used one before. Would you say having to use the touchpads is something I should worry about because while using the buttons sounds better it is expensive to buy and get shipped over to au and I don’t know if it’s worth risking ruining it just for that.
@@sethfontana348 using the touchpads is fine
i just did this mod to a 40 pin gba with a glacier shell today, small world lol
I'm really looking forward to to video next week
Love these. I'd love to see some sort of video on the different types of shells available and how they work with all the different IPS kits. It's all so confusing. I've been eyeing one of those shiny Aurora shells, but not sure if it'd work with a laminated IPS.
Yeah same confused and what shell works with what kit at the moment.
What would you do in the case that the two screws holding down the motherboard are really really grinded down?
Good work !
Do you think this works with an extremerate ips ready shell?
If we don't have an OEM shell, and don't want to trim, what shell should we buy? I think in another one of your videos you mentioned a shell that is an exact replica of the OEM....
do you know for a fact that this kit has the frame blending of the laminated one? Because zedlabs and rgrs dont mention it but you said its identical to the laminated one
worked well. thanks.
Thanks for the video, it was helpful! It would be nice if you also showed the installation of touchpads, I used the same hispeedido drop-in kit but the spot at the bottom-left corner of the screen is not actually usable (at least in my case the wire was too short).
I installed the laminated Hispeedido v5, soldered the L and R buttons, and installed the touchpads. I had to move the touchpads to the bottom of the screen. I opened the display's metal case, ran my wire through the case, covered it with capton tape, and cut a small opening in the metal so the wire would reach. That was not really my first choice, but I kept bumping the touchpads when I was playing it. I bought some AWG30 wire to use on my next kit for just that reason.
Laminated screens are the best!
Jake, can you do a video with the laminated V5 and trimming an OEM shell?
I’m confused about one thing. Hispeedido is pointing out you should cut the low vertical line of plastic on the right side from the window hole (it’s right when looking from inside). I noticed you are not doing that and still have perfect fit (at least from what I can see in the vid). Is the display sitting well? No gap? Happy there is a solution for us who like to use OEM shells. Anyways, great video as always, “solderless friends” joke made my day.
To put it simple - did you put the red adhesive on a flat surface? Or did you have to put it over the low plastic line on the right side? (sorry, hard to explain)
I just put it over the plastic line. Did absolutely no trimming and no problems
I didn’t notice that you swapped the two GameBoys for the menu tutorial! 😅
So I can use any shell? I want to know because I want to make a custom one to the one I'm buying. Also, can I not solder or is it necessary
idk if you know already, but in your last video you said you didn’t understand color pallet swaps on full color gbas, and i’m 90% sure they’re for playing dmg games with the custom pallets
Doesn't the GBA already has a color palette switcher built in? I know the GBC has
@@just_ugu i’m not sure, but if it did i’d assume the mods have more pallets
I've heard a few peeps say the pallet swaps help out visually impaired folks a bunch too.
It’s because makho asked for an unsaturated color mode to replicate the original colors of the GBA games, however these Chinese companies who manufacture them didn’t understand what he meant. So they made those different color pallets instead.
Thank u sooo much I am trying to find the right kit with no solder or cutting but do u half to solder to change the brightness thanks 🙏
Nope! One of the touch pads changes brightness and one of them changes color palettes
how much the price for those kit to modif gba?
Do you need to be able to Solder for the mod to work or can we just plug in the strip and leave as is? I don’t have the equipment 😅
You do not need to solder. The touch pads will allow you to adjust brightness
I wanted to this to my childhood console but battery acid corroded that bottom battery screw. It was stripped before I even tried to get it out
I hate it when that happens!
I have ruined more than one electronic device by leaving batteries inside it.
@@adamkane7513 yeah it sucks. it happened well over a decade ago and the device sat unused. I didnt understand how to properly clean the acid and over time it destroyed the screw. I have no idea how to get it out other than attempting to crack that back shell in half.
How much would everything cost? I dont have a gameboy advance
If u are in UK u could get an advance for around £60-£70 or America $70-$80 dollars and last I checked it was £58.48 and $73 for American
For the ips screen
It is about $180-$200 for everything the console the screen and a recharge battery
@@mikunakanosimp465a price I’m willing to pay..

Aye I noticed on several of your videos that you use a flashcart with a button tester, is there anywhere one could download the rom file for that button tester? It would be immensely helpful, thank you
The one I use is custom but search for 240p test suite for a super in depth tester
How to properly clean the volume wheel and power switch?
Attempting this tonight with the laminated IPS 😅 kinda nervous
You got this!
@@JakeSimmons was much easier than expected. I kept the touch pad for brightness but cut the one for the color changing off. Thank you for your video 🙏
Hey just installed this kit and I’m having an issue. There seems to be too much pressure on the screen which causes fading on some parts. (especially on blacks) Any fixes?
have the same problem. i am also looking for solutions but cannot find any
@@dylanseara7008 I ended up just having to bite the bullet and filing down some plastic. Honestly pretty ridiculous considering the whole point of this video was to show that wasn’t necessary
I've seen people solder the should wires to the test points TP as well. Which method is better?🤔🤔
I don't like soldering to the L and R test pads because its really easy to pinch the wire causing it to short. It can still happen soldering to the posts but its easier to prevent shorting that way imo
@@JakeSimmons Thanks so much for replying I have a new shell and the screen kit coming this Monday. When you mean shorting what do you mean exactly 🤔
@@NeoGeo822 a point connecting to another point “short” of where it’s designed to go. Typically shorting to ground. In this case, if the wire is pinched against the board, it could short causing L or R to either act like it’s constantly being pressed or never be able to be pressed
What does OSD mean for the Features?
Not an expert but I'm pretty sure it just stands for On Screen Display. It's the menu you can see at 11:05. Older kits could cycle through settings but seeing the settings in a menu is a relatively new feature.
I soldered the wires just like in the video but I'm not able to pull up the color changing menu. My GBA is stuck in black and white but im able to adjust the brightness just like in the video. anyone know what went wrong?
One of the touch pads adjusts the color palettes and the other is brightness adjustments. Did you keep the touch pads?
@@JakeSimmons no i soldered the 3 wires
@@ihavetogotosleep604 did you desolder the touch pads?
@@JakeSimmons I ended up just resoldering the touch pads and removing the three wires. works perfect now. Great vid, and thanks for trying to help in the comments! earned a sub
This is going to be a stupid question, but what do I search for to get a suction cup similar to the one he has? 😂

Ez 😅 it took like 2 hours for me
