    Some feedback:
    This video is great for comparing screens from a installation perspective, but I would like to see more details on screen quality.
    * How does the colors compare (warm/cold/washed out/over saturated)?
    * How does the screen handle games with flickering (for transparency)?
    * Does it have ghosting?
    * Does it have integer pixel scaling or not?
    * How are the viewing angles?
    * Feature comparison like color palettes, frame blending (to avoid flickering), screen offset etc, with a matrix comparing every screen at the end.
    Otherwise, great video.

    Thanks so much for putting this video together Jake, such a useful and comprehensive resource to have all in one place. Regarding touch pads, I've always traditionally gone the soldered route and used the select/L/R controls where possible, however I've recently been using the STEPPER step sequencing software a lot and this makes a lot of use of these three buttons and has rendered a lot of my GBAs unusable so I'm currently leaning back towards touch sensors on future builds for that reason.
    I can't believe there's a laminated kit out there with a plastic lens. Absolute lunacy.
    I have done two of the FP kits with their drop in shell and I must have been lucky not to have experienced any cracks. I did find it very awkward to put back together though as the screen just wants to fall out of the front when you turn it over. And aligning it so it's flush all the way round is tricky. The end result is really nice when it works though.
    I'm with you on the batteries, team LADDA all the way!
    Looks like Hispeedido has the best option so far with their drop in kit. Your suggestions for the "perfect" kit are spot on (aside from the lack of touch controls as mentioned before) so I hope these companies are listening!
    Great work, I know how much time and effort something like this takes to put together, enjoyable as always!

    I have the 3.0 and, while I am happy with it overall, I have to agree with your criticisms. My touch pad does set off on its own at times, so I have to imagine it's not uncommon. I've noticed that it does not happen while I am actively using the GBA, but only when I set the device down without making any action on it. I've also been able to reproduce it easily by just stopping what I'm doing and setting the device screen up flat on my desk. I also have to state that this kit takes significantly longer to install than others on the market. Kudos to you for keeping your reviews honest and based on your experiences with the products!

    Great video, Jake! I have the FunnyPlaying 3.0 Kit. I really like that you have full access to the OSD without any soldering. I know soldering isn’t that difficult but I didn’t want to buy a soldering iron just for that. And also there‘s a risk of pinching the wires. So I skipped the soldering. The installation wasn’t that difficult. The bracket was a little bit annoying but doable. Overall I‘m pleased with that kit.

    Great video Jake!
    If i had to choose this would be the perfect guide to choose from.
    I bought a GBA with an v5 laminated IPS display on ebay for 82€ two weeks ago, because the seller fcked up the installation by breaking off some 0402 capacitors on the gba pcb and ripping off two solder pads on the IPS PCB (SEL and R IIRC).. But nothing you can't fix with a hot air station for 25€, some flux and spare capacitors^^.
    Before that i had a v2 IPS GBA which i got from ebay as a non functioning bundle too. That kit was already nice and all, but i hated that i only had one touch button for brightness and the screen filters combined (short and long presses).. I accidentaly changed the screen filter so many times by just showing my brother something.. (the touch pad didn't come with a long wire, but rather a 1cm flex cable pad, which came directly off the display ribbon)
    With the v5 i have the OSD + SEL L/R controls, which are just perfect imho. v5 any day baby!
    Currently i'm thinking about getting a lipo usb-c kit, but i'm not quite sure which one yet.. I really want the "play while charging" feature..

I did however install their ITA(DSi lower screen) in my original gba, and it has worked great for about 7 months now. The install was pretty easy aswell. Only needed to trim the shell a bit and decided to cut the touchpad and just solder everything to avoid any future problems.

    I bought a funnyplaying IPS v2 drop in (no solder) kit in 2021 and it stopped working 2 years later. It seemed like the shell was pinching the innards... I had to really tighten the screws to make the shell pieces flush. I don't know what happened but I don't want to keep buying a new screen kit every 2 years. Ill just get an SP. I don't know if I feel confident that there is a screen replacement that will last "forever".

  • @ConsolesAndCasks
    @ConsolesAndCasks Před 10 měsíci +1

    The lack of integer scaling and thus pixel accuracy is the biggest downside to the FunnyPlaying kit in my mind, even though your great points on the shell nonsense (and touch sensors) are spot-on.
    The more "pixelated" a game is, the more you can notice the effects but it just makes the whole image have an "artificial" or even emulator vibe in my head, regardless of the filter effects you use or don't use.
    What I also find crazy about the FunnyPlaying touch sensors is just how bad they are (and this happens on GBC too). I haven't had any issues with false triggers or strange interactions on any of the Highspeedido touch sensors when everything is buttoned up properly, but all I have to do is put certain games in and it guarantees that my Funnyplaying screens become haunted with false touches.

    Really appreciate the vid. A lot of great information. However, it's quite obvious you don't care all that much about picture quality. You gave a handful of seconds to say they are all the same, but I myself, and I think a lot of people, care a ton about the look of the screen. For one, which of these screens have perfect integer scaling? Do they have any filters? How do they look? How close are they to the AGS and SP screens? What about the aliasing? The very low ppi on the gba screen and large pixels meant it had a very distinct look to it and a lot of the art was designed pixel by pixel for that resolution. Since the pixels are very visible to the naked eye, without perfect integer scaling you're sometimes going to get a fuzzy or aliased picture which might produce some strange effects and looks compared to the original. This is particularly true with lower res screens. I for one don't like screens which don't have perfect integer scaling and relatively square pixels to recreate the look of the gba image accurately. Incidentally, this is also probably why most screens don't have horizontal tilt correction. It would make the image look really bad.
    That's why I picked the hispeedido v5. Perfect integer scaling means an exact 3x3 block of pixels represents one gba pixel. It also has a filter that uses 2x2 pixel blocks (and turns off the others) to recreate gridlines similar the original pixel grid lines on the AGS. It's not perfect, but it does a good job. Would love to have this info in your future vids.
    I considered other screens as well, but couldn't find any that used perfect integer scaling except the funny playing ITA kit. They claim it has the feature, even though the actual screen is a bit bigger (maybe they use firmware to only use the right number of pixels?). However, the pixels on that kit are longer vertically and look more rectangular. I bought one to install, but still havent gotten a gba for it yet so I haven't seen it work in person.

    Hello! Nice video mate. I recently found you (now subscribed). But one thing...aesthetics... Since all kits come laminated and glued to the lenses... I prefer the original lens so that's very important for me. And that's why i decide to buy CGS. It's the most similar to the original. I prefered maybe another screen option but for me the lens is a important thing for aesthetics. For example, HISPEEDIDO lenses for GBA SP are with very bad logo for GBA. And well the rest of them are with that silver logo that i doesn't like very much...

But with ips screens it flashes, which flame blending fixes and makes the shadow look transparent.

      @@saki3963 oh yeah, now that you've mentioned the battery life from what I've experienced. I have rechargeable double-a batteries with 1200 mah capacity each. and I set my brightness to 2nd from the lowest brightness. The battery lasts from 8-10 hours. It's very great. As for the difficulties I had installing it, the brightness controls needed to be soldered to the ribbon cable. My kit included some thin gauge wires but unfortunately those are short so I ended up ripping the solder pads from my ribbon cable. So I bought another ribbon cable and bought 30 AWG (american gauge wire) I cannot stress that enough. Cut the wires at least 5-6 inches so you can have some needed space when installing. Also that is the first time I've ever done soldering. If you have a friend or know someone who has experience soldering electronics just hire their service. It's much easier that way. But if you want it to do it yourself. Invest in a good soldering iron, flux and solder lead. It'll make the soldering experience faster and easier.

      @StefanPiano Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@JakeSimmons I did some more testing and the issue seems to be a bit different than I initially described.
      What seems to be happening is that when the membrane is pressed in (when it feels like it clicks) the conductive part actually needs to be pressed a bit further to make enough contact with the pad on the motherboard. This makes it so 'softer' presses aren't registered consistently, or registered at all. You'd have to press quite hard and after playing for an hour, I found my left arm/hand actually hurt from the extra force I had to use.
      I am using the original membrane so I am not sure what else could work. Super grateful for the initial reply but if you've got advice for me now that there's a bit more info on the issue, I'd really appreciate your input!

Didn't have to rely on adhesive that may fail at some point. I've never had any issues with the touch pad, are you securing it to the shell at all? I always tape it down to the shell/lens, or just cut it off and insulate with kapton tape since I don't really like touch sensors. Also never had any cracking issues.
    The need for a custom shell is the only real downside for me with the FP kit, but really most people are getting new shells anyways when doing a screen upgrade.
