Love the honesty in the issues that happened in this. We are learning as a team. Keep up the great work.
Most underrated Retro-Mod youtuber! keep it up
I really enjoyed this video, life is all about learning from our mistakes, and we also learn about troubleshooting. I also found out about about the cool Extremerate shells, I really want to make a mod using them!
Haha, I agree, but that's a lot of mistakes considering how often he reminded us of how he is a "professional!" LOL
I just made a GBA sp with the same clear purple shell he used from extremrate
bro you are so under rated you deserve more subs
Confused by the video edit. 😔
Thank you so much for posting your process. My brother used to be big into modding and I want to have a crack at modding an old gameboy advance. Want to challenge myself, and make him proud if he’s still looking down at me. I’ll have to check out more of your videos. Thanks again
The purple looks great!
I appreciate you posting the mistakes you made. It's good for people to see where things can go wrong. Great content.
I'm keep this vid in my saved playlist as the GBA was my first handheld console and I always wanted to know how to mod it
But also if its possible for a guide on the GBC👀🙏
Love the honesty !!
Thanks man hope i don't screwed up
Man, I've done two of these so far and this guide is pretty helpful. Unfortuantely, neither of them turned out perfect, but for my first two mods I'm happy (or so I try and convince myself). My first one had a fingerprint on the ISP screen, and my second one WAS perfect until I screwed the battery screw in too hard and it left a bump on the front of the system. Almost cried ;-;.
That’s fine! You still did great! (:
Hey man, I think you said this in another video. But which ifixit set do you recommend for Gameboys/ other retro consoles? Thanks for your time!
amzn.to/3MeXVvL
What kit or supplies would you recommend for this as well as replacing game boy batteries
He sounds like falcon from gameranx but dope video keep it up 🤘
it's the aftermarket screws. also u shouldn't use force on screws. also u can use soda powder and super glue to remove tge broken screw post unless the whole head broke
Do you know if extremerate ips ready shells work for a funnyplaying tft/ita screen? Would i need to cut any parts of the shell?
Hey Jake, is there a reason why you didn't tin and attach the wires to TP8 and TP9 connection points as you did with TP2? This is the first tutorial where I've seen it done your way and it looks way easier!
I have since switched to using tp8 and tp9 because it’s faster but thats just because I do so many of these mods haha. I do think soldering using the L and R pins is easier though
how do you unstick the screen from the shell after you place it down ? lol i did what you said to do then you changed it up ?
Sup Jake. I was wondering if you know about the Himitsunova GBA sp led button mounting board. If so do they ship to the US or could i do it through sendico or something? Theres only 1 video in english about it on youtube
I’ve never heard of it sorry
I'm planning to do this ips mod (possibly even add a lithium battery and a better speaker+amp) and I'm wondering what aftermarket trimmed shell has the best quality. I want the original GBA feel and strong plastic so it doesn't break.
I’ve been having a lot of issues lately with shells cracking. It mainly comes down to the screw posts. Don’t over tighten it and go slow and you’ll be fine. I’ve never heard of a shell cracking any other way. But if you have the money, boxy pixel does sell all aluminum shells. Otherwise the original shell is the strongest plastic shell out there. I’ll be doing a tutorial soon on a drop in kit that won’t require any trimming if you want to go the original shell route.
@@JakeSimmons Yeah, the original would be the best. However, I would probably buy the Funnyplaying IPS v2 for the GBA (seems like that's the best screen) and that will require trimming. The trimming needs to be perfect to have a flush fit with the screen and that seems kinda hard to do for the first time.
hey foo what as the issue when the gameboy first couldnt turn on , mine is doing the same thing
Wow this looks sorta difficult the first time you tried modding a gba did you mess up or was it easy?
I think the first gba I did went smoothly. The only real reasons I messed up were because I didn’t use the bracket and I was using a bad motherboard
what soldering iron are you using? my ebay one don’t even wanna make solder balls
I have all my tools listed in the description:-)
Putting any wires around the capacitor llike that not a super great idea. As if for any reason the wire nicks you have a greater chance of creating a short, not to mention if for any reason the capacitor goes down the road it will release an oily substance that will get on the wire. Also because they deal with electric current that also means heat so something to keep in mind when putting components next to them. While it under normal circumstances they wont put off a lot of heat a failing/shorted one might. Usually this is the reason resistor and capacitors are not put too close to chip sets, ie right on top of to the point of touching.
That was a bit hectic, but thank you for filming the process.
There are WAY too many good things about this tutorial that I just can’t list them.
Hahaha good ending xD
Maybe try heating the screws up with a lighter or maybe even the soldering iron just to soften the plastic while you're screwing it in, I do that when pre threading 3d printed parts

hello i installes a v2 screen yesterday to my gba and it works but the white on the screen is more of a light light purple would you know if i have done something wrong or is it meant to be like that
its like a white but slightly purple
I honestly have no idea what’s wrong with it
@@JakeSimmons no problem thankyou for the reply, it doesnt really bother me i just wanted to know if it was normal really or something id done, such a strange one 😅
@@JakeSimmons i just found out its got 8 modes to the screen controlled by a touch sensor im not sure where i was suposed to stick the sensor as its a non weld one so left it just lose thats why its stuck on pink setting, still not sure where that wire is meant to stick to... 🤔
You're doing WHAT to a gameboy advance?!
What temperature do you recommend soldering with?
300°c but if it’s not melting easily you can bump it up a little but not too far
@@JakeSimmons Thank you! Got my kit coming in the mail tomorrow! Wish me luck haha
What's the small screw close to the cartridge reader (placed to the right of it)?
I’m sorry I’m not sure I’m following
@@JakeSimmons there's a little screw on the right side of the cartridge reader, like a potentiometer
Between the cartridge reader and the big capacitor
@@Chester-gq1ci ahhh I honestly don’t know what it’s for
Where can I get cheap Gameboy Advances for modding?
eBay or any other app/website you can get dirty/scratched/missing battery cap/broken screen/all of the above Japanese gba.
They are the cheapest for sure.
hey i is from india how do i buy one from u?
what is the automatic screwdriver he uses?
amzn.to/3jIRxR7
Sir jake im from the philipines im one of ur fan can you help me on my gameboy dmg because lcd is damage can you help me thank u
How's the battery life with this mod?
I believe it's around 11 hours on lowest brightness and around 4h in the highest one. (also depends on your batteries)
that og GBA looks terrible. definitely seen better days... nice mod! looks crisp. did mine with a black shell and red buttons and bumpers. also looks crisp! lol
Don't tighten the screws, that will break the screw posts.
I like you Jake
5:49 I always find it rich when one person does something no one else really does but everyone will become an expert over night and have all the dos and donts for that single person. Bruh they know they’re doing that’s why you watch their videos. If you’re such an expert where’s your business and channel? Do your thing man, clearly you know what you’re doing.
lol what if you were working along with the video and made the mistake you made and had to go back
Yeah I need to redo this video…
you talk like walter junior
bro there so many mistakes like why even post this
Because a lot of people don’t show the outtakes and missteps on CZcams. It can be good to show where I go wrong because it happens sometimes. It’s not a video that I’m happy with anymore and I plan to update it, but I do still think it’s good for people to see
