This made me cry. Back to back Accutane treatments for what turned out to simply be b12 induced acneiform eruptions. The derm just thought it was "normal inflammatory acne." It wasn't. It was a constellation across my forehead, monomorphic, all arriving at once, like a rash. It kept coming back when I stopped accutane. Stopped my multivitamin on a whim and wow, the breakouts stopped. What's ironic is now I have long term issues with a different pattern of irritation-induced papules from my skin barrier being non existent and fragile bc I don't make any freaking oil. 2 years later I got LASIK and turns out I'm not making enough meibum and have dry eye syndrome too. I'm one of the unlucky people who is experiencing long term dryness even years after isotretinoin, despite all the lifestyle hygiene (sleep, diet, exercise, hydration, stress mgmt) being on point. Lipikar AM / Cerave healing ointment PM seems to be the best fake barrier I can muster. Thank you for making this video, though. I wish I had seen it years ago. Hopefully it helps someone else.
That's terrible. I'm sorry about your misdiagnosis.
the lipikar cream is amazing. maybe also the avene cicaliate. i hope your skin heals up in time!
OMG I feel for you. Sometimes I feel like my severe eczema and hyperpigmentation was caused or further exasperated by the acne treatments prescribed to me as a teen. I'd love to share my favorite moisturizers with you if you're interested! I've tried several 😢
Thanks Dr. Gray, I been doing skin care for a while! I'm 33 yrs old and constantly get mistaken as someone in my mid 20s. I work as an engineer and people constantly mistake me as new and recently graduated, it always fun to tell people I graduated 10 years ago. Sometimes they don't even believe me and I have to show them my ID. Thanks for the video I always click on the notification =].
Re: B12 - I was taking a dedicated supplement for it due to veganism, and trying to be mindful of the dose, but I could never find anything less than 100mcg (when the RDA is 2-3 for most people and possibly slightly higher for vegans). Eventually I noticed that my iron supplement - also taken for veganism - sneaks in 8mcg of vitamin B12! I was able to save on supplement costs and rely on a more appropriate dosage. Always check a supplement's ingredients, even if it appears to just be a single dedicated nutrient, because sometimes the formula is thoughtfully put together for the expected typical user of it.
Happy Monday! Thank you for another fascinating video!
Loving the hair style Dr Dray! 😍
Thanks for making these videos really great information!
Omg this video was so helpful. I’ve always had clear skin and now in my mid 30s, I’ve been suffering from comedonal acne for a few months now and it’s been frustrating because they’re in clusters of my face and are noticeable. I’ve been taking several vitamins and I looked at the package and saw that I was taking in way too much B12 🤯
Thank you for this information. Recently I started taking B12 for a couple of months and got acne on my face, chest, back, and arms. I had no idea what was going on. I rarely get pimples on my chest and never on my arms. Thanks to a fellow watcher of your channel I figured out it was the B12. My acne has cleared since stopping the B12. I used Panoxyl like mad during the clearing process
Thank you for always giving such great information! Have a great week! 🥰
Dr dray. That is what he opened to me and I’m still trying to clear the acne. I didn’t have acne until I took large doses of b12. Love from Saudi xx
Such a great video. Thank you for educating us
Happy Monday. Loving your beach waves🤩
THANK YOU so much for making this video. I have been struggling with these types of breakouts for 3 months now. Just check a recent supplement I started and it has high levels of B12 & B6. Thank you thank you
Outstanding information!
Congratulations on 2 mil subscribers 🎉❤
LOVE THE HAIR 🙋♀️
Thank you so much Dr. Dray👍❤️❤️❤️ it's very helpful now know👍
Thank you so so much for making this video. Your description of vitamin B12 is exactly what I am going through right now. I’m in total shock because that is not what I was expecting to be the cause. This is incredibly helpful.
I love how you have been tying what we eat to what our skin looks like. Not only does it benefit us from a cosmetic perspective but you are actually giving information that will help make us healthier plus help us understand how our body works. Thank you so much for all that you do
Thank you for the informative video
Indeed it is really a wild wild west out there in the supplement industry so many old and of course new are out fresh on the market really for sale (in just one blink of an eye hundreds of new supplements are born 😅) and that goes without saying unchecked because there are no rules and no-one to check them out so faith is needed and consultation from your doctor or healthcare provider 😊❤. It was truly informative Doctor Andrea happy Monday ❤.
Thank you for this video Dr. Dray! Regarding they Whey supplements, is the IGF the same for Whey Isolate Protein powders? I read they have less lactose than the regular Whey Protein. So I wonder if that would also decrease the other side effects mentioned.
I had no idea about b vitamins! I was taking pre workout every day (which I now know had b12 in it) before the gym every day and started experiencing cystic acne and I couldn’t fine what was causing it. Looking at that pre workout now I realize I was consuming well over 5g a week of b12. I Went on two cycles of accutane and my dermatologist never asked about any supplements I was taking to look for potential triggers. I’m really glad I saw your video so I can be more cognizant of things I’m consuming that could be acne triggers. Thank you! I love all of your videos. You’ve helped me so much over the past two years while I’ve been on my acne journey.
Derek from more plates more dates talks about the link in detail
Wonderfully informative
My 14 yo daughter has to take biotin daily due to having Biotinidase deficiency. Her body doesn’t replicate biotin.
She is two years past her first menses and does have breakouts but not excessive. Glad to have this info from you in the case she does start having bad breakouts.
I was literally just googling supplements and acnr this morning! Thank you for such an inofrmative video! I just started spironolactone a few weeks ago and now I'm wondering if any supplements I take might interfer with it (vitamin d, zinc, red ginseng and sometimes b12)?
All these (never took steroids) and MSM and dessicated liver tablets caused acne here. I haven't taken supplements since due to my bad experience. Thanks for this video!!
You look extra beautiful today Dr. Dray! Thanks for all your helpful videos 😍❤️
Thank you for this. My ‘hormone balance’ supplement has b12 and b6. Since taking it I have developed sever acne under my chin only. I have had acne most of my life, but never this type or in this area. I will discontinue use and see if it stops!
Very timely. After recent blood work, I was told I needed to take some vitamins and minerals, including B12. I've been breaking out on my T-zone like a teenager, except I'm a Grandma. Now I know why
Thank you
Happy Monday 😊. Thanks for this one. My experience mirrors your observations. Interestingly, it pretty much is around my eyebrows if anywhere.
thanks for sharing!
Dr Dray , I LoVE your hair w the spiral curls. Sooo pretty! 👩🏻🦱🌷🌟
Thanks!!
Dr. Dray, I’m loving the curls ❤
This was so vindicating. I had to have 3 contrast MRI's earlier this year, and my skin never fully recovered from it. I'm glad this wasn't all in my head.
thank you so much for this video
This is so interesting re: B12, especially with The Ordinary putting out a serum with B12 in it.
She said in that video topical B12 is different than orap B12 and shouldn't have the same side effects
Thank you for talking about this. My primary care physician looked at me like I was crazy when I told him that I suspected it was because of B12 shots and supplements I was advised to take.
Happy Monday Dr. dray!
Morning!
Always such amazing info, thank you! And LOVE your hair today!
thank you
I agree your hair looks awesome
Omg ive been taking 1mg a day of b12 a day for anemia. Im going to talk to my doctor about cutting back my dose. Ive noticed acne lately and i was perplexed. Thabks so much Dr. Dray ❤
I happened to start taking a high dose B-complex at the start of Covid and broke out really bad. I thought it was maybe from wearing a mask, but I stopped the B-complex, and it cleared right up.
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO! i keep telling my friends at the gym who are breaking out to switch to vegan protein powder and they don't listen. Whey RUINED my skin. i had deep cystic painful pimples ALL OVER MY CHIN when i never used to experience breakouts to such an extreme. By the time i linked it to whey i had already been months taking it, so it has taken almost a fucking year for my skin to clear. Mind you i was drinking whey protein twice a day for 6 months. i am now left with hyperpigmentation and scarring when my skin tone use to be so even.. i also think that my pores have been damaged from the constant breakouts and inflammation at such a rapid pace because now i am breaking out more often, and have developed sensitive skin. It has been a nightmare. I now have the worst skin of my life.
Yes completely to the b12! I’ve been commenting this in different places for years trying to confirm what I experience when taking the dosage recommended by vegan physicians and it’s exactly like you said, small spots, all at once, not a lot of inflammation but annoying none the less. For me always on either side of my chin. I appreciate the definitive answer. I’ve gone down to taking 1 dose a week rather than daily as recommended.
Same!
Did you get a blood test to know if you still manage to keep high levels of B12 while supplementing only once a week? Sounds like a good solution for the acne but I'm afraid the B12 levels won't go up. My skin is breaking out and at the same time I need to supplement B12 because I'm with very low levels at the moment, so I'm trying to find a solution.
How about supplements that prevent/fight acne? I've used lycopene recently and it has helped a lot.
Happy Monday, Dr. Dray ❤
Have a great day
Morning!
Im not in to taking alot of diet supplements or vitamins either! I really only take what is prescribed by my Drs, and thats after bloodwork is done! Very intetesting topic Dr. Dray!! Happy Monday have a Pleasant Day and Week! Blessings!!🙏💕🕊💕🙏
Hi Jackie! Happy Monday!! I hope you had a fabulous day. I'm the same as you. The only supplements I take are vitamin d and a thyroid supplement for hypothyroidism. Both prescribed by my doctor. I try to eat a balanced diet and don't feel the need for additional supplements. I just brewed a cup of tea, turned the heated blanket on and am ready to get cozy with the kitties. I hope you'll join me. Have a lovely evening my dear, sweet friend and have sweet dreams. Peace, joy and many blessings to you always. 💟🕊💟🙏💟🐈☕☕🐈💟💤
Thank you, I’ll stop taking vitamin b complex. Might you have any input on Venus Viva with Co2 laser (in one treatment) for acne ice pick scarring?
I haven’t done it because it’s pricey. I tried a more affordable route of microneedling with chemical peel (at the same time) & it didn’t help the scars at all.
Wow! Thank you so much! I suspected my collagen supplement because the onset of breakouts on my chest and forearms coincided with starting it …. So I stopped. Just checked the label, and it is sourced from kelp. Mystery solved. Thank you!!!!
Thanks for this. I think people are making "X breaks me out" conclusions too easily. Our bodies are carefully regulated and too much of something causes breakouts so it's dosage related. However, people just make blanket statements...
Happy Monday Dr Dray…see you tomorrow x💙🤩🎃
Loving the hair Dr Dray! Thanks for the informative video!
Dr Dray for me I've been taking a whole range of different supplements for having fibroids and I can't control the breakouts I tend to get.
Dr. Drey, thank you for all of the input and explanations you give! I am learning so much!
Interesting subject! I have never taken any supplements!
Dr. Dray do you have any videos on how to treat eczema? I am an esthetician and have a client with severe eczema. I think its a tricky thing to treat so any advice would be so helpful. Its on her scalp and face and neck...
Thank you for your videos!! they are so helpful!
She has several. Eczema is so difficult to manage. I'm tracking my progress via ig
Very interesting. What's considered a high dosage of vitamin B6?
OMG, was taking very high strength b12, ( vegetarian & anemia) and have acne on cheeks. Just don't go away!! Thanks dr, gonna go low dose. The money I've spent on face clearing potions for this. I will update 2 weeks. ❤
Update? 👀
Good morning Dr Dray ❤
Morning!
Holy cow, I was wondering where those angry zits come from, when I take my B12 supplement once a week, seemingly out of nowhere! Thank you!
I have been experiencing breakouts for some months and i couldn’t figure out why. It’s rare for me. Now thanks to you I just linked it to B12. I need to take shots for several months under medical supervision, but thanks so much for adressing this topic, it’s very valuable information 🙏🏼❤️
I know someone who had been gettting b12 injections for a long time and their blood work still remained in the low abnormal range for b12, so they decided to stop getting the injections and try out the sublingual b12 instead and right away their blood work showed a significant increase of b12. They are now also about to try sublingual vitamin d3 for their hashimotos.
B12 injections gave me CRAZY acne, and I have had acne for 20 years. But! If you need the injections you need them ❤.
Hi Dr Dray so excited to be here today I live for this ❤️

LOL
I’ve heard that when you take too high dosages of b12 it can also cause rosacea-like symtoms, is this true?
So many of these break me out. I'm good with a lower dosage of B12
The only supplements I take are vitamin d and a thyroid supplement, both prescribed. Apart from those, I don't feel the need to take anything additional as I try to eat a well balanced diet. It never occurred to me that supplements could be the cause of breakouts so you've taught me something once again, Dr Dray. Happy Monday!! Hope you have a peaceful evening. 💜
Exactly same here
Vitamin d and methimazole . Do you have acne ?
Even though I'm older, I still struggle with occasional breakouts and whiteheads. Also my skin is very sensitive so I have a have a hard time incorporating AHA's into my skin care routine.
Hi Dr Dray, are you able to talk about Lithium causing acne and what to do if you're on it? Nothing is working for me.
acne Vit-B12, B6 iodine
I have oily skin and I take B-complex vits on a high dose. Thankfully, I no longer get acne at my age. But when I was much younger, they were a recurrent problem. Hi Dr. Dray. You remind me of Doc Becky, my kind and lovely dermatologist. New subscriber here from the Philippines.
Hi...from Pilipinas din me
I have oily skin too...what vit are u taking? Is that OtC?
There are some dermatology channels in the Philippines. They might have videos on acne/supplements like Dr. Gaile Robredo-Vitas or Dr Tessah Lim.@@carmi6831
@@carmi6831 Hello there. Yes, it's OTC since it's just a vitamin. I used to take Supraneuron because it's highly potent than Neurobion, but Bayer (the one who makes Supraneuron) I found out is very anti-ecology. So now I just take my B-vitamins locally produced here, to support as well our local industries. But since it is not as potent as Supraneuron, I take it 2x a day. The brand I like here is called Vitaplex-B, it is very affordably priced.
Hi miss Simone. B-complex can lead to breakouts? I ask bc I avoid taking mine bc of the bright yellow urine lol which is normal but 21 and I've been struggling with dermatillomania (skin picking) so anything thst can cause acne I need to avoid. Lmk thank you ❤
Wow I'm taking all of it - whey, b12 high amounts cause deficiency, biotin via collagen supplement, and was wondering how come suddenly I have so much acne. Lol. Thanks doc!
My migraine specialist wants me to take b12 for migraines, is there another vitamin that can substitute? I have noticed break outs, but I can’t have migraines.
What about spirulina and the like, can it worsen acne due to the iodine?
happy Monday guys enjoy !
😊🖐🍁
What vitamins do you recommend to take, vitamin c and d everyday?
10:42 in my country as a teenager all people used to apply iodine topically on the pimples to get rid of them
Thank you so much Dr. Dray - am now going to stop drinking Emergen-C everyday.
Doesn't make any sense that supplements aren't regulated even though they should be.
Unfettered capitalism, baby!
Agreed ! But I'm kinda fine with that, knowing regulations have little to do with actually protecting us .
Of course the EfDeeAye is full of another alphabet org of B$.
It always interests me to look at what's different and 'allowed' in the US vs EU , UK ,MENA etc .
It’s almost like the powers that be want us to stay deficient…
And that's why I don't touch them. People don't know what the hell is in those pills. My friend took some over the counter B12 and had an allergic reaction and broke out in hives. She had been taking the prescribed B12 from a doctor and had no problem but then decided to switch over the counter. I just don't believe in those things. Someone once said you are just taking expensive pee with those things lol
You can thank the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1995. Supplements were almost regulated, but supplement corporations lobbied to pass that bill, and continually lobby against regulation. 😮
Can kelp supplements cause rashes too? Is that common ?
Hi Dr. Dray ! This is so helpful. This happened to my Son. Thanks you !!
thanks for watching
I would get these little cysts on my skin from time to time, then i figured out it was probably from the b12 i take (vegan) so i cut back a little and now i dont get them as much or at all!
They had a dietitian come into our work. She said we are in a iodine deficiency crisis and that we should all eat seaweed. I read in a popular book about the microbiome that only the Japanese have a microbiome that can digest seaweed. Very confused but interested!
Right? My doctor advised me to take an iodine supplement for severe breast pain. It worked like a charm. But I was also low on iodine too. So maybe folks that use it and don’t need it? Or take too much?
Hi Dr Gray 🖐 I was wondering if you know what I should do, I took accutane (40 mg twice a day for 6 months if my memory serves me correctly) my acne completely disappeared. I was really happy and hoping I would never have to suffer from acne again after so many reviews about people saying after they took accutane and their acne completely disappeared and never came back. But then recently my acne came back after a few months off accutane. Is this normal and something you have experienced yourself? I feel super bummed out about it, i suffer from pretty bad acne and my dermatologist was positive i woulnt get acne again after accutne yet here i am writing this in disappointment with acne back in my life. 😢
Thanks
What about your skincare routine? Is that optimized for acne control?
You brighten up every day but especially Monday! 💜💜💜
Happy Monday!
I went to a dermatologist because I was having a really bad breakout with cystic acne and they put me on a new routine which included taking vit b combination supplements 3 times a day. My skin is better these days but I still have pimples every now and then. What is the explanation?
Yes, supplements are tricky. My mom has been told to take zinc. When I looked it up, it said the RDA for women is 8 mg (up to 12 when pregnant). Most of the supplements have 22 mg per tablet and some suggest taking two a day so you do have to pay attention to what you're buying/taking. Iron supplements can cause constipation so you have to check that the supplement you're taking doesn't cause constipation and that could be as simple as a formula having vit c in it.
you have to also consider how much of that 22mg is bioavailable. depends on the form of zinc and interatction with other nutrients like copper, iron, calcium, and magnesium.
exactly
Greetings d b hope u r well n Happy Monday😀👍💜….
I bought zinc with 50mg a tablet from central market not knowing it was too much, I notice is makes me very nauseous to the point my energy is drained and I have to lay down. No longer do I take zinc
bovine collagen as well
Biotin guarantees I will break out with acne, which makes things tough when all the hair growth supplements have a ton of biotin!😢
Yes! I realized biotin causes acne for me too. I want to take it for it’s benefits but the acne makes it pointless
She says biotin does not have solid evidence of hair growth
I was put on prescription strength B-12 because of a deficiency. I have acne/dermatitis on my lower face, around the mouth and forehead. Welcome to 61!
💁🏽♀️Have you tried Nutritional Yeast? I personally use Sari Foods. Tastes better than the Bragg brand. Of course 🙂research it & talk to your dr. Most are not for natural, ayurvedic practices.

Can you recommend any vitamins for teens, I have acne, and excema.
This woman knows what she’s talking about…. Why do I say this with such confidence? Because everything she says, unfortunately I’ve experienced, except steroids for bodybuilding. Although,I did witness this in the gym of the people that did take steroids.
I take Isolate Whey protein daily and I do not get acne but I do get bloating.
I also get a lot of side burn hair, well more hair in the unwanted areas other than my scalp and I do believe that is from all my vitamins and supplement.
Ugh, I get the bloating too :( But I need those gains
I can’t find that. Can you post a link please?
Hey dray can u talk about Soy and acne?
Hair is on point, Doc! 🤩 Happy Monday!!
thanks
I had to take one form of B12 (methylcobalamin) as a medication for a while and I developed the worst, most painful hives all over my body that lasted for a few months. It was only much later did I link it to the high dosage of B12 intake. Thank you Dr Dray for another informative video!
I've experienced getting acne from all of these except the last one, steroids because I didn't take any, and now make sure to limit my consumption of them. As for vitamins, stick to the kids versions because they usually don't go over 100% of the recommended daily dosage. I don't need 1000% of the daily dosage of anything.
Taking kid version is great advice and tastes better tbh
Yes, all B vitamins break me out!!
I take all of these supplements and haven't had acne since I was a teenager lol, wish I could trade my good skin to have no hairloss though😢
Pretty hairdo today….and, I had no idea about the potential acne issue from these supplements.
The iodine was the big one for me when I got adult acne in my early 30s. People don’t understand if they’re eating sushi drinking milk that is an organic they’re getting tons of it.
I think I might stop my B12, I'm to old for acne. However I take too many pills, meds.&
vitamins. It all becomes a vicious circle.
