Who Dr. Gaster Is and Why That Matters to Deltarune

- Essentially a replacement for my first Deltarune video, so if I repeat myself, that's why.
Things I couldn't fit in that are still relevant:
- The bunker at the bottom of Hometown is playing the room_gaster sound slowed down 666%
- The text-to-speech voice that was used to make Gaster's voice blips is the same one that reads out Deltarune's title at the end of Chapter 1.
- If you reverse the sound that plays when you scare Mystery Man away, it's Gaster's Theme sped up.
- Something I actually DID NOT know until finishing this is that the body parts of the vessel at the beginning of Chapter 1 are called "GONER BODY" in the files, like Goner Kid and Goner Clam.
Chara theory: suzyundertale.tumblr.com/post...
ko-fi.com/mistysparkles - Hry
"Gaster has to babysit his boss's kid for all eternity."
Even without the context of who Chara is, that is a version of Hell on its own.
Regardless of your views on Chara it'd have to be a real pain. Even if it's like mine the kid's probably a fucking handful even under the best circumstances, bet they break down crying about their dead brother and all the mistakes they made every few cycles and he's just gotta be like "UH, THERE THERE, KIDDO." cuz it's like he's an eccentric scientist he doesn't know how to help emo kids with their depression.
Anyone who's ever had to take care of a kid some point of their lives will know how torturous it is to deal with one. Kids are bastards man.
One possible theory is Gaster could have been the scientist that did experiments on Chara for determination. Considering he was the royal scientist for the Dreamurr's while Chara was still alive, and they both are no longer confined to their respective worlds.
Another interesting theory is Noelle's sister in Deltarune has gone missing, and the giant Gasterblaster in the lab looks very similar to a deer's head. Currently Gaster seems like he can offer power (Jevil, Spamton) but it comes at a price.
Gaster might also be the friendly dude who gives Kris an egg.
@@chaoticneutralsheep I heard a theory about the egg person. Apparently, if you type the word "EGG" (I forgot whether it has to all be capital), into Wing Dings, it makes three hand letters. And these hands make the movement a knight in chess makes. So the egg person could also be the Knight. However, I'm not completely sure that it is true, but the video about it is on CZcams, and it's about this larger "Chess Theory"

Something I noticed is that during the height of undertale’s popularity Gaster was portrayed by fans as a tall calm/collected person but when the first two chapters of deltarune were released fans started portraying him as a silent large uneven monstrous shadow accompanied by quiet whispers and broken speech. This is probably because Gaster has an actual presence in deltarune looming over everything which is most likely what caused this change into something more monstrous.
In undertale he felt like a reference to cut content, something left lost and unable to do anything about it.
Deltarune starts with letting us know "no he very much CAN do something, and good luck discerning his motives"
From what I remember of Undertale Gaster it seemed like he was being depicted as the fans imagined he might have been prior to falling into the core, or otherwise showing residual traits of that persona. So the calm and collected demeanour comes from assumptions of what "the previous Royal Scientist" would be like, and tall probably comes mostly from the mystery man sprite being relatively tall. Since there was so little information in the first place it fits that the perception changed so much the moment there was more to work off with the hints in Deltarune.
I think it’s that Undertale fans very much know that they’re dabbling in fanon when they create their gaster interpretations and revel in that fact. If you asked someone who drew a tall sexy man gaster if that’s how they thought he’d really look chances are they’d say “uhh, no? He’s a weird little blob man or something”
Keep in mind that there was plenty of spooky mysterious looming entity art of gaster even in the Undertale days.
I think it’s more that because gaster is now an active player in the story and we’re getting so many more hints about him right out in the open, there’s greater motivation for people to create artwork more true to how he may actually be within canon
(It also helps that Deltarune has a much much smaller AU scene than Undertale had and continues to have to this day)
Well, Wingdings is a dingbat font, so it would make sense if he was a little off-the-wall in his personal life. After the V-day card, I imagine W. D. being like that one comic: "Sans?! Where are my whats-its and doohickeys!? Here, take your groceries, put your brother in the fridge."
But when it comes to research Entries? All business.
@@Ally_Leaf I kinda like this interpretation. People are hesitant to say the vday card was gaster because the cadence is so silly - it seems more in line with the Egg man, who himself seems to be either gaster or connected to gaster, but even that’s controversial.
But to me it seemed to perfectly in line with gaster’s vibe. He’s this broken entity that has limited vectors for interaction. This time he manifests as a valentines letter because that’s how everyone else is communicating, but he can’t mimic it perfectly. The letter is pre written and yet it responds to the reader in real time, and when you’re finished reading it disappears and you hear footsteps. The cadence and style is silly, but maybe gaster is silly.
I’ve also considered that maybe scary straight man gaster and egg man goofball gaster are different gasters - one from undertale and the other from Deltarune.
THEORY: Gaster’s theme is intentionally simple, we’re hearing it everywhere because his pieces were scattered everywhere when he shattered through time and space
THEORY 2 : Sans and Papyrus are Gaster's fragments, which explain how they just suddenly appeared and how mysterious they are as well.
I think that is a very distinct posibility. Destiny 2 did something similar recently, where a portion of music that has been part of the main theme of the game (which made its way into most secondary themes) for years was shown to be evil-song-magic-thing-earworm of the big bad.
Knowing Toby you may have hit the bullseye there 👀
@@oppositeday429 I mean, this is a valid theory that goes around, especially in a lot of fanworks, fan comics, and AUs.
It reminds me of a comic I used to read on tumbler that had Chara's "back story", and both sans AND papyrus were the royal "scientist"
@@oppositeday429 the Handplates comic says that Sans and Papyrus are parts/fragments of Gaster and since he got erased from existence, some parts of the brothers did too, so that explains why they're "glitchy" as in why Papyrus can "fly" and why Sans can teleport and mess with the game

the end of the "garbage noise" even sounds a bit like a scream, and to me that makes sense because, based on what happened to gaster and his current form, he must exist in some form of pain
"Is that a cut on your face, or part of your eye? The gash runs down as if you cry. The pain itself is the reason why."
-error handler code
the "garbage noise" is confirmed to be (at least a derivative of) Muffet's laugh, just slowed down, pitch bent, reversed, looped, and distorted in some crazy ways. If you speed up mus_smile (the Entry 17 "music" track) over 1000% and pitch bend it back, you get something resembling Muffet's laugh back out. So, who knows... it could just be his laugh stretched across space and time (quite literally)? It could just be a coincidence that he sounds like Muffet, though.

One weird thing I want to point out.
"Man" is usually used to refer to the egg person, while "Him" is usually referred to Gaster, and the sprite is spr_mysteryman.
It is still, very possible that this is referring to Gaster as the 6s and the mus_smile file suggests. But, I just find it weird and wanted to point it out.
Note: Thank you for the comments for pointing it out, but gaster is referred as a man at the river person dialogue.
There is no confirmation that he's actually is talking about gaster though, since the dialogue is vague enough just enough to let toby put the most fucking mild-blowing 4d arg play into that line
Well, beware the *man* who speaks in hands.

I think that Gaster is Grandpa Semi, because “semi” also calls to mind “semicolon,” and you could look at the mystery man sprite’s eyes as being a slightly embellished semicolon. It also ties into the font lore of skeletons and Gaster, as they focus on the format of the written word when they speak.
I’m slightly confused as to why the song grandpa semi has mettaton’s motif in it though
@@increbidel4685 Well, it could be meant to tie Mettaton to Grandpa Semi, and a connection between MTT and Gaster would make sense, since Gaster was the royal scientist and created the CORE from which Alphys' creations (such as Mettaton) draw their power.
I'm finding this video over a year late, but it's so weird to me how, even if I played Undertale back then, intentionally staying away from the fans made the whole experience with the game very different, I rememeber seeing some videos of some "cool easter eggs" in the game and that's all I knew about Gaster and honestly didn't care at all about him, meanwhile the fans were apparently going insane over this weird ghost skeleton man

It’s very fitting that the character who was scattered across reality has a theme simple enough that it can be heard in the background of most songs
I thought the same thing, it's also fitting that he's everywhere from the code to the games to the lore to freaking twitter
I will say though that apart from the undertale main theme, the other examples given are pretty likely not linked to gaster because even if the musical structure is similar, the underlying chords are fundamentally different in such a way that it's more likely a coincidence.
@@ericy1817 i think that is what they are saying, gaster (or rather, his theme) is everywhere because he was shattered across reality
@@-FutureTaken- My point isn't that gaster isn't everywhere, but rather the assertion that his theme is everywhere is questionable because it's pretty likely that the other instances of the theme might just be coincidences from other common musical structures.

My brother’s favorite Undertale memory is when he played the game for his first time and came across the gray door in Waterfall out of sheer coincidence, but he decided to skip the door and come back to it in a second not realizing that the door and hallway would disappear after leaving. He then told me about it (around this time I was deep into canon lore and fan theories and knew all about Gaster), and I just stared at him for a second and told him that he found a rare chance happening and just left it. He laughed so hard. Honestly pretty hilarious now that I’m typing this out lol
yeah its so rare, after 5 years of bieng in the undertale/deltarune comunity and laying undertale over and over again, i never found it once, still to this day i never found it, i did find 2 gaster followers tho
Talk about the chances, that kinda reminds me when I was replaying Undertale some days before Chapter 2 would be announced for Switch and I got the Wrong Number event

I remember when I was playing Undertale on my tablet, I unexpectedly met one of Gaster's followers. I think I laughed as much as your brother did, because then I didn't know that at the beginning of each playthrough the fun number is generated differently
Lucky I hunted for it for 4 hours no luck
Theres one other Gaster allusion in the hometown that wasnt mentioned. Iirc, when you approach the mysterious doors at the bottom of the Town, it plays a specific sound while near them. If you take that sound in the files and speed it up by 666% in an audio program, it's actually just the Garbage Noise that plays in entry 17 and on Kris' phone. Whatever happened to Kris (and maybe Noelle if we consider her words from Snowgrave) at that door, it could have connections to Gaster. My current assumption is that Gaster has formed some kind of connection with Kris, like he did with Jevil and Spamton, which is why there have been multiple comments on how Kris has changed recently and why they hear the same noise on their phone that Spamton did.
Additionally, it turns out that the Wingdings font was co created by a man named Kris Holmes. So theres another connection to Kris and Gaster
Obligatory Kris uses they/them.
The intro sequence also supports this, though. The dude speaking to us at the beginning not only has the exact same speaking style as Gaster, but his typer value in the code is 666, just like it was in Undertale. So yeah it's almost certainly Gaster who intended for us to be put in an empty vessel, but was interrupted somehow.
i’d also like to note that the rabbit shopkeeper in snowdin says that sans and papyrus “just showed up one day and asserted themselves” and that nobody knows where they came from
if gaster WAS their father (or at least guardian) it would make sense if he was written out of existence, and by extension, sans and papyrus’ connection to the town, since they probably would’ve been living in his house.
also, since it can be assumed that sans worked in the lab at some point, it’s possible he was working WITH gaster, perhaps even when he fell.
and, y’know, seeing his own dad/relative/guardian be “scattered across time and space” might make you a bit aware of timelines and the quality of reality. might explain how he’s so aware of the player’s meta actions.
Here's my own take on why Gasters theme appears everywhere:
Gaster was shattered across time and space. His musical representation then ALSO is shattered across time and space. Giving you a feeling of him always being around, watching.
THATS ACTUALLY SO FUCKING COOL-WOW
BROO I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THE MUSIC LIKE THAT
and because of the theme being so simple it's very easy to hear it in places outside of toby's influence
ever just shatter yourself into the hat in time song "Peace and Tranquility"
I like this theory very very much :P
That's the reason it's so simple too. It appears everywhere, not intentionally, but because Gaster's shatterd pieces have worked their way into the actual universe itself.
Can you imagine if Undertale came out before datamining and the internet was such a big thing? One day, you're playing through it like usual when you see a weird, grey NPC who mentions a guy called Gaster who never comes up in the main story. You never see this NPC again on any subsequent playthroughs. You post on a forum to ask if anyone has seen anything like this and the only responses you get are "idk man sounds like a glitch or something." or people assuming you made it up, and you're left to wonder if it did actually happen
And then it could potentially become a creepy pasta 😭
Exactly. It's just as toby said in his audio "IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE SECRETS NOWADAYS. BeE-cAuSe OoF NoI-sY pEoPlE lIkE yOu!". Glad it got release nowadays tho
TBH kinda like Missingo in Pokemon Red and Blue.
You'll get vague playground rumors and boom.
I do believe UT would have been in a similar boat without the internet, but I also don't think it would have hit so hard either, because 4th wall breaks are important and in the genocide route when Flowey is talking to you he mentions how the player and him are better than those who are just watching.
IE kinda hitting the outside world who is too scared or not wanting to ruin their save with the genocide route.

I’ve always been a fan of undertale, but never was interested in the fandom as a whole and looked down on it a bit (mostly because I was too old for it and they were a bit rabid back in the day) so when you mentioned fandom, I was more then a little worried this video would be difficult to watch for people not into the culture. However, I was pleasantly surprised that the video is very friendly to people out of the loop and enjoyable to watch. Good job on the intro parody by the way, hearing that specific theme (was it called “fallen down”?) was a nostalgia trip.
“Ridiculously talented Musician And Leit Motif Enthusiast Toby Fox” is one of the best description of him and his work I’ve ever heard. 23:55
I like to believe that his “creation” was actually Deltarune itself. A world where monsters and humans could live together in peace. He fell into his creation, and pieces off himself were shatters across time and space. A bit in Undertale. A bit in deltarune. Maybe bits somewhere else.
alright here is my new crackpot theory that makes literally 0 sense
gaster invented sans
sans was just a normal monster that originated in the delta universe
at some point in time sans ended up somehow leaving deltarune and being trapped in the undertale universe, where everything sucks and hes forced to live underground
it would explain why he seems relatively unchanged in deltarune
and some other things probably
this is almost definitely wrong
i made this theory up in like five seconds lol
Considering that, last I checked, the description for Deltarune lists it as being in the Undertale *series,* this does make sense. Toby Fox said he was planning Deltarune for quite some time, so perhaps he was planning for Gaster then too?
@@bumblebot2458 I think Deltarune has been in development since far before Undertale. Considering how much more prominent his role is in the former, I wouldn't be surprised if Gaster was originally created for Deltarune's story, and his appearances in UT are simply foreshadowing.

Boss baby but across time and space
My headcanon when Deltarune first came out was that Deltarune was essentially a mechanism for Gaster to babysit Chara and/or the Players and keep them contained. In Undertale player choice was everything, leading to whole routes depending on genocide or pacifism. Deltarune didn't have that, perhaps because Gaster saw Chara/Player's choices as dangerous.

Something I feel like a lot of people aren’t talking about enough is the fact that, in the Deltarune timeline, Gaster should still be alive. No royalty = no royal scientist = no experiments = no “creation” = no falling into “creation” = no space time bullshit blah blah blah you get the idea. Unless the space-time-shattering affected him across all timelines somehow, or something else happened in this timeline to achieve the same result. Maybe Gaster as a character is just “doomed” to a fate such as that, similar to how Deltarune Burgerpants seems to be “doomed” to live a similar life to his Undertale one despite the radically different circumstances?

As a very avid writer who enjoys foreshadowing in the most obscure of ways, I am 100% convinced Gaster was always planned to be a big part of Deltarune, and any blatantly obvious Gaster insert into Undertale (like the fun value 66 door) was just Toby deciding to play the super long con and foreshadow 10 odd years in advance.
I'm pretty sure (although my memory could be playing tricks on me) that I heard somewhere that deltarune was a game idea that he got from a dream, before developing the game undertale and that deltarune was always going to be the [BIGGER] game. I mean, right now there seems to be 7 chapters planned, and the first and second combined are about the same length as an average undertale playthrough...so deltarune will certainly become significantly longer once its finally completed.
The fact that Undertale is legitimately almost 10 years old is fucking with me
@@youngjellyfish8694 Yes deltarune was/the story was made before Undertale. It was updated though because Undertale and it was obvious Toby would change things to include things from it.

Snowdin Town's theme in Undertale also has the "Don't Forget" leitmotif in it. Which is fitting since that's where Sans' lab with the Don't Forget photo is located.
Bonetrousle was originally meant to be Deltarune's battle theme before it was repurposed for Undertale, so it makes sense that Toby would've written a lot of these themes and melodies before Undertale came out.

He didn't stop being scary.
I was terrified of him back in 2016-17 when I was into undertale. I couldn’t sleep after I saw videos with him haha.
Which is exactly why I love when fan projects portray him in a more sinister way. For example, cybo's Deltarune fan tracks on a hypothetical Gaster boss fight.
Also his theme is quite similar to Michael Myers theme from Halloween, now that I think about it.
I've seen some artists use an Analog Horror aesthetic to depict Gaster, and I feel it's honestly very fitting.
Also, the Z's that appear when Sans falls asleep in his battle in the genocide run are in the Aster font. It doesn't appear anywhere else in the game but there.
