There are infinite pareidolias of anything, not exclusive to or most severe with Undertale phenomena, 90% are just coincidence or other biases and illusions that trick you into seeing inexistent relationships. Covers and/or remixes are inarguable, intentional, and fewer, making the offbeat covers more bizarre than pareidolia.

The fact that Undertale went from a game of befriending instead of killing monsters to a chaotic multiverse of altered versions of the game truly shows how much power a fandom can have.
Not to mention a good few AUs are apparent results of Sans getting fed up with Frisk being a Genocide speedrunner (or something).

People gave him a solar system of water planets like subnautica, cute at the surface, but terrifying when you go to the abyss.

One of the things I think that makes this a masterpiece is how hard the sans fight is. It requires so much of you, that by the time you beat him, you don’t feel the sadness you did when you killed undyne and papyrus. It’s a feeling of relief, just like what I’d imagine a serial killer with no real ties to anyone would feel
When I fought sans, I got so stressed to the point where I *wanted* him to die, where my fury fueled me to win. After I killed him, I felt nothing but relief, no regrets, no guilt.

As someone who’s been a part of the Undertale Fandom ever since 2016, I can see how absolutely INSANE it would look from the outside. I wasn’t on Tumblr at the time, but I was on CZcams. I was there to witness the emerging of Undertale literally everywhere online. While I was still picking apart the original game, AUs were being pumped out like clockwork. Fangames, fanart, animations, webseries, lets plays, fan songs, anything you can think of.
I distinctly remember watching those sans fight animations, especially the “Beautiful Day” and “Stronger Than You” ones. v0idless, SpectroliteAAA, TC-96, CrayonQueen(loverofpiggies), and Jael Peñaloza literally RAISED me. Without them, I wouldn’t be the person I was today.
Yes, the Undertale fandom can be insane, but it means so much to all of us. Thank you for the video!

I like it, i don't care if it doesn't recieve the same attention or it's "not as good", Toby is a great developer and the charm on his games is just enough for them to be worth it

This is absolutely beautiful. The fact success isn’t always something positive is a very important message to spread, and I thank you for doing so. I’m not saying success is bad, but success definitely could change things entirely- for better or for worse. I know it may be a simple Undertale fandom video essay to some, but this really hit hard (in a good way). Thank you.

Speaking of AUs, I still feel Horrortale is the best one. Not because it's darker and 'scarier' but because unlike most other AUs which just either swap a few characters around, change the world it's in or just make them edgier, but because it takes place AFTER one of the neutral endings in the main game. So in a way, you could read it as semi-canon to the main game. It takes an already canon AU and expands on it, which is why I love it so much.
I played Undertale for the first time in 2017. I played it many many times, but i’ve never done the No Mercy run. This video is like a rollercoaster of nostalgia for me. I was very fond of AUs and i was very down in the fandom’s rabbit hole. Listening to you talking about, with also the OST in the background, made me tear up a bit. I know i’m late to this video, but i just wanted to write this

Wanna know the sad part?
It is true
Sometimes, I kinda forgot just how small Undertale actually used to be. Like Toby Fox is surely surprised to see just how far his game blew up into popularity and most likely just wanted to make a fun meta RPG with inspiration from Earthbound. And revisiting it during the pandemic really showed me that there was more to Undertale than I remembered and I like it even more.
Also, maybe it's just me, but I kinda realised much of the main media that I was focused on seem to have a story element of "meta" (i.e. Undertale as before, Homestuck, the Spider-Verse films). Maybe it's just that anything that has deep lore and goes meta are my appeal and it's always the ones that make me think a lot (and of course, those media will always have massive fandoms, for better or worse).
the impact that undertale had was PHENOMINAL. i met my best friend in 5th grade by having undertale fan art on the cover of my binder, and almost 7 years later we have stayed friends, and are STILL lowkey fans of undertale 😭

I'm not usually the one to comment on videos but i have to say that this is the best video essay I've seen. Undertale is one of my all time favourite games. I love the way this describes it. Its so good. Its exactly describes the experience of finding Undertale and finding its massive fandom. And I've been in this fandom since 2017-18. I even cried a little at the end lol.

I love how you creating this video lead to such insanity. As a person who is part of this dumpsterfire of a fandom, it fills me with joy each time you try and finish rambling about an au, another one pops up to your dismay.
It’s so really sad that the Underfell and Underswap creators were bullied to the point where they selected their blogs altogether, but what’s sadder is that they aren’t the only ones. The creators of this AU called Flowerfell (an AU branched off from Underfell where Frisk is cursed to grow flowers every time they die but instead of attempting to prevent it by fighting back they just try to power through it with kindness with the help of Sans and Flowey) were harassed badly due to mixed reasons. I can remember the reasons why but I know some of it had to do with shipping.

Given how he used to do the music for the Homestuck animations, I think he's developed a pretty thick skin to all of the bullshit that goes on with his own creation.

Same. Most fandoms have the negative sides all the time, and even haters do have a point about the problems though. Toby Fox is not alone, Masahiro Sakurai is also the victim due to amount of death threats he received because the fans aren't accepted about what he has chosen the DLC characters to pick them up for Smash, especially for Geno from Super Mario RPG.
Every creators have their own terrible experience of dealing with the negative side of the fandom, and the positive side is mostly harmless. At least from what I've learned from _Misery_ by Stephen King that depicted the darker side of being a super fan. Obsession is inevitable to humans, and it's impossible to make it go away unless you have to deal with it.

The fact that Sans' AUs are their own fandom with intricate lore and interactions is really a testament to the power of the Undertale fandom
and the people to. The undertale fandom is a really good example of just how much people would go to when they experience something they wanna experience again, even if it's something small, they wanna relive the experience again in different ways that had never happened before. one thing i usually think is that whenever a fictional world/game can have you feel feelings you haven't experienced at all/very little, it's a good game.

Honestly the view counts on the AU animations did that for me. If an AU video is getting tens of millions of views… I mean Jesus kickflipping Christ that’s only a portion of the whole fan base
I just don't know how we went from a great and emotional game to the rest of the fans creating their own fandoms and au's . It's really not a bad thing, (different fandoms sometimes make other au's of one character), but they make their characters and au's RIDICULOUSLY OP. I'm not joking, they make their characters way more op than characters like Anos, Rimuru, Xeno goku, and archie sonic. It just proves that they love undertale a little TOO much. More than what toby expected/wanted. Toby didn't want over a million au's, he just wanted a great gaming franchise, and a fanbase dedicated to him and the games he makes, not other versions of sans that are somehow above fiction. Overall, I kinda like the underverse, even tho the fans are too obsessive and annoying sometimes, it's fine.
p.s: (I don't suggest you get into debates like, oh, Anos vs sans from random au, because then the underverse fanbase is going to come after you. I'm not kidding, THEY WILL COME AFTER YOU; they will tell you that their sans and au's are more powerful than, marvel, dc, AND EVEN THE ONE ABOVE ALL. It just proves that they love undertale TOO much.)

This came up on my auto play and as I listened to it I couldn’t help but have dumb smile on my face the entire time you were talking about Undertale. I understood everything that you talked about and knew every single AU you mentioned because I was in all of them. I mean even now I am in them and watch them.
But your video made me remember the wonder that I experienced, when I first discovered Undertale. It was a huge part of my life for me, I followed and consumed every single of content that I could find since I discovered the game in early 2016. It was my source of joy and my inspiration to draw/create things.
These last 3 years I’ve gone through a lot of major changes in life with family drama and death. Now I’m on my own(literally, I mean I’m living on my own and cut off a lot of family but I digress), going through a lot of things but I still love Undertale just the same. Its really been with me through thick and think, with its animations, music, etc. It’s a warm and comforting feeling.
I really hope that what the mirror tells me is true, “Despite everything, it’s still you.” because I feel so different and much more exhausted than how I was just a couple years ago. I really wish I can go back to how I was before everything happened.
Though I guess despite everything, I’m still me.
Wait till bro finds out about SwapSwap, or SwapSwapFell, or SwapSwapSwapFell, or SwapSwapSwapSwap. Hell, the more you find out about AUs the more you lose your mind. So many different versions of AUs themselves, including TS! Underswap and AZ! Underswap, and Primus!Underfell. AUs are endless.

This video has reminded me why I love this game so much and why I love the best parts of the community. I came into it watching a random compilation of comic dubs and from those alone became so endeared to the characters. After playing it for myself falling into the rabbit hole of fanart, AUs, and ask blogs was so fun. I only wish I could go back and experience it all again. It's goofy, and a lot of it is just Sans, but it's also amazing in its own way.

The thing that really spooked me about Undertale is when I accidentally killed Toriel because I didn't know how to play quite yet. Because I wanted to go pacifist, I restarted. But when greeted by Flowey, he knew what I had done.
WOW really??? I also killed Toriel on accident.
This is by far the most impactful moment I've ever felt in a video game I still remember the goosebumps I got when he called me out
After Toriel gets low enough on HP, the next attack is scripted to kill her. The game wants this to happen, knowing that most people will reset, experiencing Flowey calling them out on their save scumming. I was taken aback when it happened to me too.

Wow..This video is an emotional rollercoaster. I was laughing, crying, feeling depressed, feeling hopeful. The Undertale fandom is truly something special and I can’t thank the game enough for simply existing. I really wish I was a fan when the game first came out so I could experience all this in real time. I’ve been wanting to make my own AU but can’t focus for long periods of time so I never bothered to try. I really hope that the Undertale fandom continues to grow and develop new amazing AUs to add to this crazy never ending list.
Toby must be so proud yet so scared. I can’t even imagine what he must’ve been (and possibly still is) going through. I really hope he takes care of himself.

The Undertale fandom is like a microcosm (maybe the wrong word given it's size) for what I love and fear about us as humans. The small things done by individuals and small groups that when combined with enough of us working together can become some massive system both beautiful & dreadful.
Undertale actually changed my life in so many ways, it's truly a masterpiece and going back and seeing how it grew up to this, it's amazing

The last dialogue happened to me after 3 years of drowning myself in in-game runs, let's-plays, AUs, music, and fanfics, which lessened to a near stop in 2018 when Deltarune was out.
Looking back at everything now, it's stunning how the fandom has grown to that. Much more interesting is the fact that it's still up even now. I might dive into the fandom if I weren't so hesitant thanks to the "age best left in the past" vibe, but whatever happens happens I guess. Hooray to Undertale nonetheless ^ ^

What a wonderfully written and presented video. I've never played Undertale and am only vaguely familiar with the community surrounding it. But the way you described it, its cultural impact, and how it made you personally feel had me choked up a little by the end. I genuinely felt something from a documentary video about a game I have no personal connection to. Great job!

Undertale became so popular because it's so heartwarming, calming and pleasing world. I've seen some aus and most of them are actually good, well animated, sometimes well written, actually some of them were amazing, but they are stories for themselves, even though they are literally aus. I can't really explain it well, but even though some aus are very well done, undertale has its own original unique charm that we will love and remember. After all, aus were created because people wanted more of undertale. It was certainly one of the most heartwarming and emotional games ever to be made. For me, Undertale is Undertale, and bad sides of the fanbase shouldn't affect on what we think of this beautiful game.
I loved this vid. Need to get up for uni in 4 hours, but still thank you very much yt for recommending me this. I have not followed the Undertale’s fandom for several years now, but used to be a hella active member of it, making art, music and even trying out coding some of my own boss fights. Needless to say all of that was pretty armature level and TM “Not Good”, but it still gave me sort of a kick start in those things that I now really enjoy doing. Undertale also reminds me of a time I hung out in Amino. New voices every day, and new faces every week when we decide to meet up. I really can not appreciate Toby Fox, the game and the fandom more, for all the creative inspirations and remarkably fun times it brought to me. Even though Im 2 years late, and you’ll probably not see this, amazing work on the video John and thank you very much for reminding me of those good times and emotions!

I think that the reason behind Deltarune being released in small chapters may be what you talked bout at the end : to prevent too much hype at the same type, so that Toby Fox doesn’t need to go through the same thing.

Fun fact, if you go back to to Toriel’s house after you defeat asriel, when you interact with the mirror, it says “It’s still you, Frisk.” It’s reassuring what asgore’s mirror tells you, that after everything, it is still you, no matter what.

If you were to ask me today I would tell you a community of people this lovely and inspired by each other to create cannot ever exist on this world let alone the internet.

As someone who played Undertale for the first time in 2023, I was always confused when I saw Undertale AU content with no context and this video really cleared that up for me. Thank you for explaining to those late to this amazing game!

I'll be honest, it sucks on the rare occasions I talk about undertale cause it's my favorite game and my more internet-savey friends just laugh and quote memes or make a megalovania joke. I get it, they're funny, but sometimes I just wanna talk about this game that means a lot to me without 30 layers of irony attached.
I think about this sorta thing every now and then. I think memes are fun, however there is a danger of becoming "meme filled" where you don't take the world seriously anymore, and for some reason you need to add 30 layers of irony to everything. That is honestly not fun. Like I said it's all fun and games to meme alot, but sometimes you just gotta appreciate the original thing or take a break from the internet.
That’s what Undertale has become. There is only sans, and megalovania left. There’s no saving it, since the community killed it off anyways.

As someone who is part of the meme community and haven't played the game, I don't mind about Megalovania meme but the song itself is pretty adrenaline kicking. Plus, from what I've learned, that's not technically San's theme song, it's more like a song that is BASED ON THE SITUATION.
To be fair, Toby’s experience with Homestuck should have given him some idea what was to come.

I think Deltarune is a reflection of Toby fox’s change as a person. The game focuses on the themes of not having free will. This is perpetuated throughout the game constantly. This idea could likely be a symbolism for how Toby’s influence was out of his control and how he has been influenced by his community.

I'm gonna be completely honest, as much as I like your theory im pretty sure its not that deep. Its more a reflection of his change of vision of undertale and how far of a different direction he could take while still having the game stay to its roots.

You would think that, but the ideas in Deltarune predate the ideas for Undertale. Deltarune was the project that Toby put on the back burner so he could make Undertale. He’s alluded to this in several interviews.
On a second lighter note, now I wanna go find that super crazy meta story thing you talked about near the end and give it a watch. It sounds like a fun time
my birthday the past few years has been confusing and tough for me to acknowledge. the moment i turned 25 i started crying and couldn’t place exactly why and still really can’t other than being confronted with the idea of the future coming at me and still being unsure of what i should expect of it. i’m approaching 27 this month and am still feeling confused about it, but watching this video and you reminding me of the reassurance this indie game gives us that no matter what, things will be okay because it’s still me, it always has been me, and that won’t ever change no matter the time that’s passed. i no longer feel like the constantly happy and sweet child that everybody said i was, and that’s okay. it’s okay to acknowledge that i feel like i’m somebody a little different, shaped by things i never expected to happen to me. that really is the overall message for undertale, that even through hardships that are cruel or unfair, through sudden revelations that shake you to your core, that despite everything, it’s still you.
