  • This Undertale documentary details the development of the indie video game Undertale and goes behind the scenes of its creation. Discover how developer Toby Fox came up with the idea for the unconventional RPG and how he wanted to challenge conventional RPG mechanics and tropes and fully embrace the video game medium. While Toby developed Undertale mostly on his own, he did receive help from several artists, most notably a friend of his named Temmie Chang.
The documentary also explores all the design decisions that Toby Fox made and how the game was inspired by a Wikipedia article about arrays. It also details how Toby Fox struggled with the success of Undertale and even caused a burnout. Lastly, the documentary also takes a look at Toby's next project Deltarune.

THIS is the part that people dont see. Toby maybe one of the few indie devs that managed to get a hit on his first release, but it wasnt his first experience. Toby was working on art, programming, music, etc way before he released the demo. And even with the demo he still had to work a lot to create Undertale, write stories, scratch designs and musics. Considering the time Toby studied before creating Undertale, we can say that he worked on it for a least 5 years

In my opinion people who do Genocide are TRUE MONSTERS. How they like doing this run? And...why? To say that they beated Sans? Are they happy that they killed the entire Underground? These people are just heartless! It is really annoying when they say : "If you didn't defete Sans you're noob","I cryed when I "HAD" to kill Undyne" or when they say "Chara why you did that". They are really annoying!!

What people need to learn from Undertale is that it’s not an overnight success. Toby has had a long background from already established fandoms, namely Earthbound and Homestuck, making things like mods and musics, and then he makes something small as a demo and sets up a funding and expanded that demo only after the funding is well-established.
Don’t fall into the trap (like my studio’s indie game did) of just making a big thing on your own for years out of your own pocket, with no community or backing and then just releasing it expecting it to blow up. It won’t. Save yourself from this disappointment.

A reminder, it's *2022* and we still love this game, as well as anticipate the upcoming Deltarune installments at the edges of our seats. Back when it was new and people really started obsessing over this game, it became so crazy within the fandom that it scared the rest of the gaming community and left a sour taste for the people who just wanted to play their favorite games without hearing: "Undertale is *the* best video game ever," so as a response, their distaste for the game and its fans grew into hate, and they started saying Undertale is greatly overrated. You could compare it to Fortnite, a game that surged in popularity and had infamy for its... less kind fans. Fortnite is still a well-developed game, but it got a bad rep. However, neither game is "overrated," just some people took their love for it way too far and made it seem that way. The often forgotten thing about Undertale people often seem to forget, is that every route perfectly manages to make you feel like you should feel:
-Genocide is supposed to be boring/unsatisfying (you need to grind out every single area until no one's left to even try to get this ending and you don't even get the satisfaction of killing Asgore at the end yourself) and make you feel bad for killing everyone (even Flowey, who isn't even able to feel emotions, is scared of you when he realises even he isn't above his own rule of kill or be killed after all and Asgore asking what kind of monster you are).
-Neutral is best described as the fun or the most open route since you have full control in who lives or dies. And I'm just going to be honest here: I legit cried during Azzy and Chara's backstory.
-And finally, Pacifist is the happy route where everyone gets to live happily and you actually make a lot of friends while having a lot of fun and/or helping them to overcome their problems (from Sans' jokes and the dates with Papyrus and Undyne to convincing Toriel you're strong enough to keep yourself safe and helping Alphys to learn her how to accept herself and help her get over her anxiety issues to finally sharing one final heartfelt moment with Asriel before he turns back into Flowey again, but not before he breaks the barrier once and for all, which means Chara and Asriel's plan was succesfull even when it actually meant they both had to die in order to make their plan succeed).

Mettaton NEO's "fight" still was kinda disappointing, but it makes sense why it is the way it is when you know the lore of the game.
And I guess finally learning how Flowey learned to reset was nice too since that actually answered questions Neutral and Pacifist never did.

All the small details make the game unlike other ones. From small humorous moments to actually making characters that feel like they have a 'soul' and individuality, the game offers so many things at once when you're not expecting too much from a game that is only a few hundred megabytes. Unarguably, the story, the soundtrack and the undeniable creativity really elevate the game and your impression of it to its peak. The game is definitely short but it feels long enough because you get to savor and enjoy every moment of playing it. All said still you can tell or rather feel that it's a work of someone who really cared about their work. Props for the informative and very enjoyable video and props to Toby and everyone who worked on the game.

When I first heard about Undertale, it was through the Tumblr fandom, and I completely avoided it at the time because of the toxicity. It took me a year of it being released to actually try playing it for myself, and another year after that to completely finish it. All I can say is, nothing is going to amount to how I felt first playing it. I think the thing I did the most when I first played, and to this day, was just laying in bed at Toriel's house while the Home music played, just enjoying a moment of peace before a Genocide run, or a long journey to the end of the game in a Pacifist run. Not only does the game make you think, it makes you sit and realize that "despite everything, it's still you".

The whole point of undertale was so that no person had the same feelings and experiences so therefore this fun fact is demoted to opinion/ motivational/ promotional/ compliment. I was thinking about, in the future, trying my hand at making a game. And this right here sparks that even more.
Undertale has been such a comfort game for me, it's my favorite game. Most of it was my childhood. Toby & his games have given me so much inspiration, and I really want to use that inspiration in the future. I don't think I could accomplish anything close to what Toby did, but maybe, I could make my own thing, and somebody out there might like it.
