    EDIT: People in the comments have rightly pointed out that the story isn't about the fight against capitalism, but instead choosing to follow your dreams, form real relationships, and help out your neighbors, rather than being greedy. It was a big oversight on my part and I should have phrased it differently in the video. Eric Barone defines his own view on the matter a bit more in this article I found after I read the comments: apps.apple.com/us/story/id1437369473
    I'm going to do my absolute best to not make a mistake like this again in the future.

      Awh. I did that once with another game. My bf provided me with a copy, I loved it, so I bought it. I told him that if he wanted to play it he should also pay for it, because it's worth paying for. But since then I haven't gotten any pirated copies, I buy all my games :) I mostly buy indie games and those guys tend to need my money to create more great games.

    @beebthatscreams7704 Před rokem +136

    Something you can really tell by playing Stardew Valley vs the Harvest Moon series is what parts of the original series he enjoyed and which ones he didn’t. While I’m not personally familiar with the Rune factory games, after pouring hours into Harvest Moon installments throughout my life you really end up playing them for different things. The main gameplay loop is crops and animal farming, that’s how every farming game is going to be, but every other major aspect has one major difference that changes what they feel like. Mines are the biggest example, there’s no combat in HM and the mine gameplay is mostly encouraged as an alternative for days you can’t farm. There’s little reason to go very often and for it’s purpose in HM that’s exactly how it needs to be. But in Stardew you go whenever you’re lucky, it’s needed to get the materials necessary to make your farming easier. The festival’s in HM are something to prepare for and compete in, while Stardew festivals are more a chill day off with friendship bonuses. In the end farming games are farming games and when one studio has a near monopoly on it with only two series a little indie flavor to get new people interested has really benefited the whole genre, now there are many new indie farming games with their takes on what combinations are most fun.

    one of my most favourite parts of the game are the characters. they're all so genuine and varied and well thought out, which is depressingly rare in games and even movies/shows. speaking of depression, Shane's story line was the one that brought me to my knees because i absolutely saw myself in him, so much it was painful, but it was also a stepping stone for me on my way to mental wellness. it felt like seeing myself through the eyes of another, with no distortion, realizing how frightening the shit i said, did and tried must've been for others. it made me think twice before dismissing someone's claims of caring.

    • @Yet.Another.Rapper.KiG.V2
      @Yet.Another.Rapper.KiG.V2 Před 3 lety +326

      @@Lilacs4 People demonize capitalism because capitalism's internal logic necessarily leads to elitism and monopoly. The megacorporate homogeneous hellscape we live in, powered by slave labor, with the rich able to subvert democracy, is like this BECAUSE of capitalism, not in spite of it. People have been foreseeing these ends since capitalism's inception hundreds of years ago, and their warnings only grow more understated with every passing decade.
      Having a farm and making a living is not "capitalism." Privatization and profit motive, the source disease of untold amounts of human suffering, is capitalism. Capitalism was supposed to fulfill the promises of the Enlightenment, to break away from monarchy and provide of system of justice, dignity, and liberty. But with the funneling of wealth that happens invariably under capitalism, that justice, dignity, and liberty falls in fewer and fewer hands. Capitalism began to resemble feudalism as far back as its inception and implementation, with the Gilded Age. This was fixed when socialists and anarchists won labor victories that put a bandaid on capitalism, and these bandaids have been picked away bit by bit until we entered the neoliberal era we live in today.
      Again, elitism and monopoly are the logical and unavoidable consequence of capitalism. Unjustifiable hierarchy, funneling of wealth, homogenization, economic crisis, and, ironically, erasure of the individual are symptoms of capitalism, not external things that happen in spite of it. Homelessness, poverty, needless imperial Forever Wars, fascism, and the climate change that threatens to kill us all is the predictable and empirically provable consequence of capitalism.

There's no history of slavery in Stardew Valley, so I think your comment would be better used on a political socialist video, since it's rather off-topic. And in regards to everything you've said, that's a very weak strawman argument because correlation does NOT equal causation, a typical flaw in radical anti-capitalist arguments. I'm not interested in arguing politics here, my comment was addressing the VOCABULARY and DEFINITIONS in relationship to the GAME. If you prefer the government owning everything and spoon feeding you bread and water and deciding what you are allowed and aren't allowed to do, I guess that's your choice? But I prefer a world like Stardew Valley where privately owned farms are allowed to thrive and small businesses can provide families freedom and variety and a sense of purpose in life.

      @@Lilacs4 No, it's not off topic. You can't talk politics and then get mad when someone who knows more about politics than you takes issue with what you said. Don't backpedal, it's cowardly.
      Second, no, nothing I've said is a strawman. It is not mere coincidence, every consequence listed and the dozens of others I didn't even touch on, from alienation to suppression of innovation to the necessity of an underclass, these things can be traced directly to the fundamental prescriptions of capitalism. Again, these issues have been predicted for hundreds of years, long before they manifested in the abomination we know as neoliberal capitalism today.
      Third, it is really ironic you would accuse me of strawmanning, mke an unsubstantiated gesture at a fallacy, and then proceed to strawman my political prescriptions. Nothing about socialism or any of its peripheries is about the government "spoon feeding me water and bread" or having totalitarian control of my life, if I wanted to beg for scraps and have no control over my destiny then capitalism would be working just fine for me. Socialism means simply "worker ownership of the means of production," and if that doesn't click with you, that's fine, ignorance is not a sin, but being at the top of the Dunning-Krueger mountain and pretending you understand something based off of propaganda-laden stereotypes crosses the line into irresponsibility.
      Lastly, have fun starting a business with the $50k liquid assets necessary to start a business in the US. Totally achievable for the majority of the population. And go look into how many conglomerates own everything and tell me we have "variety." We have different paint jobs, sure, but homogenization, monopolization, and corporate welfare under capitalism has been increasing exponentially to the point that your idea of what starting a small business under capitalism is like is unachievable fiction for the majority.

It helps that its got a features that i absolutely love about some games: story, engaging characters, exploration, finding things, making things, and just being able to seemingly flow in and out any aspect of the game while letting you know that if that if you lag on something too long it will get funky. Its great! Fortunately i found it when i need a game to help me with these stressful times.

    I can relate to a lot of what he said he went through; the shifting focus, intense bursts of concentration followed by procrastination, really strong difficulty balancing work/life etc. I'm in awe at how he overcame it all and pulled this project of, nothing short of an immense feat of endurance and discipline! In the nicest possible way, I wonder if Barone has some form of ADHD. I don't mean that in any negative way, I might be undiagnosed (I haven't gotten tested yet) but I have a friend who was diagnosed so I've talked to them a lot about it recently, and a lot of the common things with ADHD line up. I also work with a programmer who suspects they might be ADHD too, and his career has been flooded with the same intense 12-13 hour bursts of hyperfocus, surrounded by inability to focus/care about other stuff especially the essentials.

    As a huge fan of HarvestMoon64 I have to say that Stardew Valley is amazing, and what is even more remarkable that a guy so wholesome as Eric Barone made it by himself. I just started year 2 and I cant wait to discover more of the game as well as his new and upcoming game Haunted Chocolateer. Thank you Eric! For keeping this genre alive. You have made me a lifelong fan.
