How to Handle Your Side Characters - Part 1 - My Hero Academia
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 06. 2018
- Hey everyone! I finally have moved into my new place, and have internet. To celebrate, and apologize for the untintentional hiatus, I thought I'd go back to one of my favorite series for the first part in a series where I examine how to handle the side characters in a story. HeroAca felt only appropriate because I absolutely adore the majority of the supporting cast. Maybe you do too. Either way, enjoy!

So, just gonna get out ahead of this, but I didn't include the Internships in my list of groupings because it primarily started as individual experiences for the key players in the arc. Likewise, the rest of Class A/B were just off by themselves.
I dunno. Why does a shark swim?
whats with the mineta hate?
TazerLad
I just want to say great job with this video. It's good to see that there are people who understand that sure the development isn't Monumental or that extravagant but it builds up bit by bit. Which results in a far more satisfying conclusion
Also yeah, fuck mineta
Unpopular Opinion I will tell you why: he has no boundaries. Spoiler from the manga:
when he meets a pretty important character that happens to be in elementary school(remember that despite his size he is in high school) he says "I cant wait to meet you again in ten years"(aka: when she is finally "legal"). that's right, he tells a little girl that he cant wait to meet her again when she is just old enough for him to "legally" potentially date her.
tldr, he is a horrible little bastard that deserves to lose his Place in the Hero Course and be replaced with Shinso or ANYBODY else
I read the manga but uraraka is still undeveloped
I think the reason the characters are so enjoyable is because they don’t revolve around Deku, they have lives out side of school out side of Deku like real people they have different experiences/different quirks and it’s also in the character design that pushes the envelope they don’t have same face sindrome even the eyes are different shape It’s as if they were all made with care, with intention (soz i rambled ;D)
This is shown really well when a ton of side characters go to best girl Momo's crib to study. They don't just sit around and wait for Deku to show up, they actually have lives.
One of the most common problems with highschool setting manga is the all too common "protagonist circlejerk". They feel like the support characters only exist for the sake of depicting the protagonist. They're literally caricatures.
However in BnHA they feel like actual "classmates", individuals equal to the main characters, rather than props for the hero.
this feeling will only get stronger the further in you go, to the point where one of the best characters in the series, not exaggerating, not only isn't orbiting around deku, deku has to start orbiting him for a while before they become a little more equal in status.
ya know except uraraka now that they live in dorms
Clorox Bleach they still have lives that don't revolve around deku. how DID todoroki get the materials in place to totally tear up and replace the floor in his room? why doesn't yaoyorozu know what a measuring tape is and that you can budget space with one?
what the rooms actually do is allow us to see other sides of characters. tokoyami isn't just a cynic with poetic flair, he's the biggest loser in the entire school because he's trying so hard to be goth and falling short. that trait has nothing to do with deku or his exploits.
Just imagine Present Mic dragging Aizawa in his sleeping bag across the hallway to his class.......he totally would.
It's what a true friend would do
I just can’t wait for Kirishima’s big moment to be shown in the anime. He’s easily a favorite of mine after that.
why not 'the' favorite? he sure is mine
you mean the "Hard Part"
Is it going to appear in season 3?
Derp Mcderpinton
His major focus will be in season 4. Some of it should be maybe 1/4th into the season, and then some more halfway through the season.
Judging by the soundtrack titles for the second half of the 3rd season, we'll be ending this season around ch. 121. Kiri's first part of his development is ch. 132. sounds about right.
Seeing how Horikoshi has been treating his characters in the manga, I genuinely believe that by the end of the series all of class 1A will be fleshed out loveable characters that feel like they could be main characters. Not that I don't love the class already.
Sounds like an insane amount of work and effort, but if any series can pull that off, it's BnHA. I wonder what they'll do once they graduate from U.A. though, cause it's not like they can continue the Boku No Hero *Academia* part of the stories anymore, and it's doubtful that all of Class 1-A or even all of the main cast (Deku, Iida, Bakugou, Todoroki, etc.) would be able to stay in touch in the same way once they go pro. They'll probably have to do a sequel series, detailing Midoriya's guest to go from Sidekick to running his own agency or something like that, or him climbing his way to the top as the new Symbol of Peace. It'd be interesting to see, but I don't know if it'd be as good as what BnHA is now without the Highschool setting and without the main cast constantly training and growing as heroes and characters in the same way they do now, where basically every arc is a training arc.
I would love it were up in graduations day, we can see each of the kids reflect on their big Hero moment as they take their final steps through UA and out into being pro heroes.
Cut to the fans crying because our kids are all grown up.
No, it was made clear, on episode 1. This is the story of how he became the greatest hero. So it is clear that at the end of this, Midoriya will be considered the greatest hero. I mean, he is way too modest to just be saying that.
I hope you're right. Still sorry for a certain bubbly pink girl after she's had fewer meaningful victories than Sato, though apparently Horikoshi said out of the girls, he'd most like an arc about Mina, and Sero out of the blokes. It seems that in an interview, he actually said he has one planned for Mezo of all people and that considering all of class 1-A, he'd like to have arcs focusing on everyone.
Actually, it's entirely possible that each character will get their day in the sun, I mean this is the bloke who took bloody _Endeavor_ and gave him enough character growth after the reveal of All Might's true state to make him a potentially interesting character, humbling him enough to honestly strive to become better as a _person_ and family man, not just a hero.
Ooh...
Koji Koda though...
I come from 5 years into the future! In a surprise twist, Mineta has received extensive characterization surpassing Todoroki and even Deku. Mineta has essentially become the main character and the show has been renamed "My Hero Mineta". This is the reality we live in now.
Oh, I don't think so.
Though i wish that was true,it's very unlikely...Considering how much hate he is getting now
It's a joke made because he's an awful character, please don't tell me I've found someone with more holes in their brain than myself.
5 years later and I can confirm you're correct
Kirishima best boy btw.
He is fantastic. Agreed.
Welp, in the manga he got developed almost to the point he is a main character now. So yeah, Kirishima best boi :)
Yeap
U right
Exessen yee
Looks like i found someone with an iq higher than 2 digets thank u BECAUSE KIRISHIMA BEST BOI
I feel like Monoma's likability comes from the Sports Festival arc. We see more insight into how much *more* of a character he is than being simply snobby and salty. We learn that he deeply cares for his fellow students in Class1-B. He is shown to be actually pretty intelligent and capable, fleshing him out and making him just a little bit more endearing.
I agree i didnt like him much when i first saw him but if he never had those moments i'd probably hate him
Also his little speech during the Bakugo vs Uraraka fight was nice.
"Or sparkly grape juice because he's that friking extra" -best line of 2018
Honestly I'm terrified of the day that my hero Academia pulls a Dragonball Z and forgets its Supporting Cast. I honestly hope that never happens because that's probably the day when the series will start to suck
Realistically, the biggest danger of that happening is if the story gets to the point where they're training at Agencies after graduation. Because it's not realistic for all of Class A to end up at the same agency. It would definitely force a bit of a bottleneck because it would be harder to keep up with all the characters we had come to know.
TazerLad
That is true
I hope they could at least make sure the main cast stay in touch you know?. That way they could still potentially have Batman the Brave and the Bold style team ups now and again.
For sure. And yeah they could help that by having maybe certain characters join teams and then work on missions occasionally with more main characters. It could be a lot of fun to watch.
TazerLad they would have to go through major changes in how the story is structured if they delve inte their time as pros or sidekicks. Their focus would have to shift drastically because the setting would be so vastly different. I feel like it would have to be made into a sequel series, rather than a part of what is the current BnHA series, and I feel like this series will have to conclude once they graduate, and then maybe they'll give us an aftermath storyline or something. We'll see I guess
Yeah I agree this series has to end after they graduate from UA. It wouldn't make sense to keep it going, so if we do see their time as sidekicks and professional heroes it has to be a sequel series. Like Naruto Shippuden.
Unbreakable Red Riot!!!!!
goes with your profile pic
Thank God someone finally mentioned Momos contributions. I was starting to think that no one liked her.
Plus your Mineta joke was pretty funny. Screw him.
Momo is great. I love her reaction to everyone asking her to tutor them.
TazerLad That was great. I'd want her teachings before a test too. But I'd also want to crush Grape Boy under my heel.
whats wrong with mineta he is justa perv....
Unpopular Opinion That's precisely the problem. Heroes have to be good role models like All Might. They have to inspire the best in people. I don't want Mineta to inspire others to treat women that way.
Mineta just exists to facilitate fanservice, which is my main problem with him. If he grew literally at all as a character, I'd be more okay with him.
I really can't wait for Tintin to make his anime debut...
Me neither. Vault Boy is best boy
I know, I can't wait for anime version of Lucas to appear
Same
Archie is on the way guys
Love me some *jacked* Lucas
"Granted one of them was Mineta, but still"
*HA!* GOTEE!
Btw you should check out medaka box, I think you'd like it
I will give it a looksee. Still making my way through Haikyuu and Koroko (I know I'm spelling that wrong) no Basketball. ;)
TazerLad Enjoy! Let me know when you do!
Is it something currently airing or an older show? I only ask because I'm mid flight right now and can message but not Google.
TazerLad Ah I see! It's an older show from back in 2012. Fair warning you'll have to read the manga to get the whole story as they only adapted the first 1/3 or so but tge anime is well worth it snd the manga is one of my favs! Your choice to watch it subbed or dubbed
What a name
What I love the most about the side-character development in this series is how so far Horikoshi has been keeping his word. He said (somewhere in the manga, I can't remember where) that he really likes his side-characters and wants to show more of them and put the spotlight on 'em some more. Pretty much everyone has gotten a little bit of characterization so far, with bigger arcs to put them right in the middle of the spotlight every now and then.
Also the anime has done a great job at giving screen time to people who never got it in the manga to begin with (yet).
Also if Jirou isn't in your best girl list you're a fucking degenerate
Pedro Scoponi considering the school festival, she will gets best girl in some hearts
Jirou is best girl
I'm still waiting for a Jirou-focused arc. She IS best girl. I will accept no other alternative (besides maybe Mina).
Jackman LeBlanc the manga focused an arc on her(not action-packed but still you can tell it's for her) XD
I remember reading that Horikoshi makes a backstory and personality for a majority of the characters he makes. For example there's a news anchor who turns up every now and then who has horns but one is cut off. The story behind this was that the horn would usually be blocking either footage or other people or something when shooting the news. Because of this and his dedication to his work he decided to cut off his horn. This is also apparently something that many viewers found controversial or took issue with.
the only other anime where I like as much of the cast as in Boku no Hero Academia, is Haikyuu. I just love almost all characters in both shows.
I aggressively love how extra Monoma is and I still don't understand why I'm not annoyed or pissed off at him. He is just so fun to watch.
littleblueclovers It's cause he tries but he always fails so it makes you laugh.
aggressivly love.... ohhhhkay... g o o d l u c k w i t h t h a t
I fricking love Monoma. He is the absolute incarnation of the snarky, cleverness that I love hearing from a comedic character. Deku is still best boy, though ;3
They way they animated his first appearance in S3 was so over the top and absolutely perfect.
+TazerLad
I am fully on-board with that statement xD
I don't read the manga but I am pretty sure that Kirishima will be the next "basically main-character". Especially after hin getting more important in every of the last episodes until he had his first "big moment" while saving Bakugo.
Baloto you are right!
he gets his big moment in the overhaul arc, which will begin around 4 episodes from the latest bnha episode
the guy everybody likes uhh no it really won't. U r forgetting an arc there
+Cae Gray i know the license exam arc but i think it'll take something like 3-4 episodes
the guy everybody likes
Right now we have just caught up to ch 94
The next arc starts officially at ch. 103.
The next arc + the bakudeku fight ends at 121
That means that there are still 27 chapters to adapt before the next arc starts. Considering approximately 2 chapters are adapted per episode I doubt that the internship/overhaul arc will start in 4 episodes.
I'm just hoping Kaminari gets more spot light and love like how he does in the license exam. I honestly found that part of the license exam arc to be the best. Its actually made him my favorite character in the whole series. Hes a loyal, good hearted boy that gets flustered pretty easily, but he also loves building other in class 1-A up shown in the dorm arc. I just love him so much and even if he lacks book smarts hes still got emotional intelligence. Him being paired up with Bakugou and Kirishima is something I totally need more of down the line. I think he'd also have a great dynamic being paired up with characters like Ojirou and Sero. Kaminari has been shown to be petting Ojirou's tail during class which I feel kind of shows they have a sort of trust in each other. Also its been seen that hes one of the few people close with Mineta due to them both being rather pervy in nature, though I think they bond on more than just that. Their both kind of looked down upon in class 1-A, Kaminari due to his stupidity and Mineta due to being perverted. I feel like they understand each other beyond that surface level characterization primarily representing them to everyone. Hes honestly just such a good character in my opinion and I can never convince myself that hes the traitor of the UA becuase hes had such wonderful moments of companionship with members of class 1-A even if they aren't the main focus most of the time. He just seems like the type of person everyone can naturally get along with even if hes a total dunce some of the time. Though I think that just adds to his sincerity. He does happen to excess in literature though and has been shown to have a very wide vocabulary, which I think is cool of them to add making him not a complete moron. Since its typically done as a trope to make dumb characters dumb all around, but Denki gets to have that strong point which I love. He can also learn things pretty quick, not to say he isn't impulsive a lot of the time. It was shown during the festival arc how he learned to play an instrument pretty quickly which was also helping to build on his friendship with Jiro which we did get to see glimmers of previously when they were getting to come up with their hero names. He also made a point of showing admiration for how he room showed off her passion for music and brought this up even after judging the rooms. Yeah, some people view them as romantic interests, but I'd find it to be really cool if they just took the route of being best friends because thats an aversion to troupes commonly seen. I know that everything doesn't need to avoid troupes 100% of the time, but I think it'd be neat if this was the case. Kaminari is definitely already a very interesting character in my opinion and would love to see him get his own arc down the line since he has so much potential to be a strong character. It has also been seen that hes already quite popular demonstrated in the popularity poll in Japan, coming in 10th the first time with hardly any time to develop, 11th the second time with a bit of growth and then 8th after people saw him shine in the license exam arc. I really love how people can see this character as more than comic relief because I totally agree!~
Peppery Chump oh my gosh I 100% agree with you my friend. Kaminari is the BEST and he deserves more screentime!
I completely agree with you! Some people compare him with Mineta or think Kaminari’s a pervert but that’s just wrong. Kaminari has healthy and VERY wholesome relationships with both girls and boys of 1-A. He respects his friends and tries his best to not hurt them with his quirk. He encourages Jirou in her talent and occasionally hangs out with Momo who is the smartest of the class, academically. He also loves art as much as he loves trendy things.Denki shows us that academic notes does not represent your intelligence. SPOILERS, Kirishima’s gotten an arc and I think he will get an arc too, I have theories about that!(And no, although I used to I don’t think he is the traitor now.) SPOILERS END
Thank you for your comment! I love Kaminari as well.
Denki needs more love!
I sincerely doubt he has any form of intelligence but okay, if you say so. In my mind Ill only remember him as "PIka-chu!"
I agree with you
Denki is an amazing character in this show and should have more screentime and appreciation
I'm just mind blown by the potential for everyone in class 1-A. We know Midoriya will become the number 1 hero - that's the whole point, but we know nothing about how the others will end up.
Mina for example, has one of the most versatile quirks in the series, and her speed and reflexes are the best amongst all the girls in class 1A, making her compete with Bakugou and Todorki - I mean, Mina could end up in the top 5, easily.
Same with Seto, his tape quirk makes him turn into spiderman but can also be super useful in rescue scenarios. There's just so much potential and there's a reason everyone in class 1A all ended up in the Hero course.
actually I have a very big suspition that midoria will be heavily out run in popularity by other heros when his time comes
Very much agreed about Mina, especially if she learns to overcome her fear in dangerous situations and learns to think on her feet. Hoping she does and we get to see her in action (successfully, VS Aoyama doesn't count and still angry about that impossible test against Nezu), especially since if she can get the acidity to the right amount. If she can, she could easily engage villains with the ability to deliver chemical burns of varying severity rather than lethal force, which would be rather distracting for the target when receiving them. Actually come to think of it, such a thing would be far more dangerous than, say, blunt force, fire or ice.
I love these videos for a very, very simple reason: I am an author whp writes stories which are more set as an anime/manga rather than novels. These videos help changing narratives and making characters more likeable or (in villain cases) unlikeable or in general make me rethink how to write certain aspects of the story and reconsider things I didn't think about before.
Shikaschima
Same here man
This is some inspiring stuff
"making characters more likeable or (in villain cases) unlikeable"
A great villain is actually just as likable as the supporting characters _despite_ being a huge ass - because you still see a person with their own ideals and a struggle, rather than a mere obstacle your hero has to overcome.
Case in point: Most major villains in MHA.
Considering that, I'd argue Horikoshi is just really good with designing characters in general (both from the writing as well as the visual perspective).
LinkEX
Very true
Which is probably what helps the story be so enjoyable
I need Shinsou to get more character development because for that one episode or two he showed up most people fell in love with him *cough* *cough* replace Mineta :3
Anime Trash replace bad purple boy with good purple boy!
They are both good purple boys...
...but Shinsou is the better good purple boy, I agree
well you're not gonna get it.
CrypticaH ! I say get rid of sugarman for him because FUCK HIM! He ugly boring and isnt even that strong
And I thought I was the only one who wants to see that Guy again! He's great, get rid of Mineta and get him into Class 1-A!
when you're nervously sweating because you enjoy mineta in an unironic way because he is good comedic relief
I love all the characters. Yes. Even Mineta.
wow, you are either very brave or very stupid... To say you love mineta to a youtube comments section.. wow. just wow
Well I’m the type of person to watch a whole episode of Koji Koda, Kojiro Bondo, Manga Fukidashi and pretty sure most of Class 1-B
Have to disagree with you, Kendo is best girl.
I also think another reason why the huge set of supporting characters in Class 1-A, the 3 we actually know from 1-B (Tetsutetsu, Monoma, and Kendo) as well Hatsume Mei are likeable and feel like a part of the story is the fact that they all have unique and totally distinct character designs. No two characters look remotely alike. All have such a distinct look that, even if you cannot remember their names (and let's be honest, no one can remember all of their names all the time) you never confuse them for one another when looking at them. You could do that thing "Who's that Pokemon?" thing with the blacked out silhouette and still totally know who it is, even if you don't remember their name.
My personal favourite of the classmate supporting cast who still haven't received any development is Sero. Seems like such a normal chill dude.
Agree to disagree, but I respect your taste .
We can agree best girl is ashido or momo right. I also think shoji is the best not fleshed out character as he seems like a cool protecter dude.
I wish Sero got more since he was really cool for a few seconds in the fight with Todoroki. If Todoroki didn't activate his ice in time he would have without a doubt lost.
Mineta will actually become the main character. I'm calling it right now.
Side characters become more main character once they get their hero origin? Like Toderoki?
Trevor Grover manga spoiler:
Kirishima gets a couple of chapters all to himself that fleshed out his backstory and motivation and we see a cool "power-up" from him.
Eastwind4869
That shit was fucking awesome
Eastwind4869 those were some of my favorite chapters of that arc
Side characters are 2D. They are flat. The difference is in the level of detail. Uraraka has a backstory that was revealed to us but it didn't reveal the amount that Todoroki's did. It didn't give her much more depth than she already had. Todoroki's story changed the entirety of his character.
Ariel Matthews that's why that part is called "Todoroki Shouto: Origin", because since that moment he started a new chapter in his life
I feel the quirks of the characters and how they play into the personalities also helps like with monoma his main thing is that he constantly looks down upon 1A but his power is mimicking other powers and copying is considered the sincerest form of flattery
6:02 Were you talking about Kirishima? I haven't read it (yet) but I heard he becomes alot more important. I'm really hyped cuz he's already my favorite character and seeing him become a main character would get me so hyped.
Tohru is my waifu Yup
Yep. He was even ranked #4 in the latest popularity poll behind the big 3 main characters.
Season 4 is truly where he will rise to his best boy status.
Exessen He is definitely best boi
Tohru is my waifu ye ik a little bit of his past hes so coooool
4:20
I got it
4:40
I got that one too
The only other anime where I literally love every character is Gintama. That show is just something else.
Haikyuu's characters are all interesting too and lovable
^
Monoma is voiced by the same dub charecter that voices kharma in Assassination classroom and i find that hilarious
It really is a great dub voice for Monoma.
can't wait for kirishima's popularity to soar tbh
I love twice.
Twice is basically deadpool, of course that makes him lovable. However I will argue best villain is Climax girl.
I love him too, there's so much to like about him! He's the blandest most one-dimensional villain and they should just kill him off, hate that guy.
I see what you did there.
Enzo at first i was like, wtf?? now i got the joke and i'm laughing. well played
when I read this comment I thought "twice the k pop group? so irrelevant but ok" when I saw the replies I realized you probably meant twice the villain
I love all of the side characters because of how much effort was put into all of them generally. Like the science of their quirks, their ever-changing casual wardrobe, the meaning behind all of their names, and how they each have their own lives and don't exist off of Izuku.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t like Mineta, not because of his powers, but I just hate pervert characters.
Tsuyu is best girl for me. Lol she just grew on me, it’s nice to see she’s a secondary type character.
I think his quirk would work great for someone with a cocky attitude. But for the little twerp, not so much
I like all of the side characters (including Mineta. Especially Mineta)
There are two types of MHA fans,
The ones who hate Mineta
And the ones that are wrong
Mystaee
So I’m right
i wonder how mineta even got into this school
He's pretty smart and while his quirk isn't great for destroying the robots the students were awarded points for assisting.
what's with all the mineta hate? is being a perv so bad now. dude is funny as hell and he even showed that he has grown with him saving his teammate saying the boobs can wait.
Unpopular Opinion i didnt say i hated him.
Captain Styles
Honestly even though the way he got in makes sense it doesn't really feel like he deserves to be there. He just does not feel like the type of person who has the right to be at such a prestigious School.
Captain Styles true but the minate hate is real man
I think what I like the most about this is the fact that it all feels natural. To me at least,it doesn't feel like something that isn't real,or has a story.YES it does have a story, but look at these guys! It's like normal high-school and it doesn't feel forced either.
4:25. That alone is beautiful my good sir. Thank you and keep up the great work
Tape is my boy.
d o y o u k n o w h i s n a m e a t l e a s t?
Sero, Sero for Serotonin
Mr. Aizawa is actually one of my favorite characters because of his subtle goofiness (like the moment you mentioned with the sleeping bag). He is also a character that I feel connected to because I can relate to him in quite a few ways. I have a dry sense of humor (much like his) that only my family (and people who are familiar with my parents’ humor) understand. It’s also hilarious to see his goofy smile when he tells the students about his “rational deceptions” XD
What I really like and see from this show's supporting cast is that they each get subsequent development throughout the ENTIRE series instead of all at once.
It adds to the longevity of a show as good as this one.
We didn't even know the quirks of all the class until season 3! That's prolonged perfection.
Kirishima!
I also hope to see even more from Inasa! I love that boi!
The side characters in Hero Aca - minus one *shoves Mineta off a bridge*- are actually one of the best supporting casts I've seen in a very long time.
I think part of the appeal is they are all kids and they all have their own goofy or individual and interesting personalities (goofy, serious, emo, fabulous) but they also ALL have room to grow. And they all interact with each other in different and fun ways.
More than that, it's neat seeing a group with all their own goals and talents, not centered around the main character. Almost everyone likes Deku, but they don't have lives that resolve around him like say the cast in DBZ. Where EVERYONE is effected on a personal and mental level everytime Goku does anything. It's also fun seeing a group of kids that are all competant in their own way.
Mirio,Kirishima and Deku are the only students that i acknowledge as heroes, they all sacrificed themselves to save someone.
Deku sacrificed his arms to save Kota.
Mirio sacrificed his quirk to save Eri.
Kirishima sacrificed himself to save Fatgum.
all the other aren't heroes yet.
Couldn't agree with you more!
A hero is not someone who sacrifice himself
Tsuyu moved to save Izuku from the Nomu, favouring his life over her own as Shigaraki was actively reaching towards her. She also threw Ochako out of harms way, once again favouring her friend's life over her own when confronted with a (literally) bloodthirsty lunatic whose quirk neither of them knew.
Mina moved between a colossal villain and two terrified girls, putting her own safety at very real risk to protect them, even breaking down in tears of relief after she deceived him.
One thing I love about the side characters is how they’re all so distinguishable, design wise. If you looked at just their silhouettes, you could immediately tell who is who. And the show does do this, because unlike a lot of other shows, when the side characters are in the back and reduced to just little blobs of shadow, they still have their defining features simplified as well which is really nice. It makes them feel important and not just for background use, and seeing that is what solidified my conviction that the author really loves all his characters. He always makes sure to highlight them as defined individuals that come with stories.
THE SUBTLE JOKES HOLY SHIT
But really, I feel like everyone has forgotten about sugar boi Sato! Sadly one of the only notable things he's done so far that stands out is making a cake for the girls. Practically everyone except him in Class 1-A and even some characters in Class 1-B have had more screentime.
My Hero really handles their side characters well, so I hope that folks like Sato or Ojiro or Hagakure get some more development.
Yes, I have a soft side for underrated characters.
I think the side characters are so good for 2 reasons
1. The world forces them to be unique so like after season 2 its hard to at least forget their quirk
2. The spotlight has been placed on most of them for at least a little time
"what? Karma could be number 2 if I was in to *FISTING* "
I died laughing at this LOLL
I think these characters are as enjoyable as they are because first, they aren't clinging to the protagonist, and second, the series always presents their perosnalities straight forward, so every little interaction the have between themselves or with the protagonist, or a line they just throw, you get a bit of that unique personality and come to love them
YOU HAVE TOTALLY SUMMED UP EXACTLY WHY I LOVE THE SUPPORTING CAST
I'm thinking to my self
"wait till Kirishimas story gets animated"
xD
This reminds me of how each Daganrompa character is written so any of them could be the main character in their own story. I get the same vibe with Hero Academy - ANY of these guys could star in their own story. I think it also helps that we aren't introduced to all their names and powers at once. It lets the story focus on certain characters first, while giving us glimpses of the others without explaining them until necessary. It makes them more mysterious, which makes people more interested in learning about them.
Now you put the idea of Aizawa inchworming his way to class, and now I can’t stop smiling. Other than that, this video was enjoyable and helpful!
Todoroki has become my favorite character because of all the development and backstory we finally got to see in him. Plus when something happens that involves him, for some reason it just becomes 99% better in my eyes.
What I really love about all the side-characters is that, for the most part, each and every one of them could *easily* be the hero of their own story, and it *feels* like they're also going *through* their own story, even as the series progresses.
It doesn't feel like it's just Deku growing into his role - *everyone* is.
i cannot WAIT to get to spoilers under the read more
Kirishima's arc because god DAMN do i love that boy
Tetsutetsu's bit during the training camp made me really like him, whereas before he was just a huge meme to me because of his name! It really gives off the feeling that all of these characters are or want to be heroes at heart.
Love all of the characters beside Mineta. I just can't get behind him and when they tried to give him more depth in the final exam the whole time I was rolling my eyes.
The side character that should get more focus is Hatsume Mei. She is basically being on par with other characters without relying on cheatsy quirk, something Deku could've done instead of getting powers gifted to him.
I think part of the reason why these characters stick with me is because of how a lot of them spend an episode or 2 with Deku, and grow as a result. We see them as not just side characters in his story, but people he grows and learns from, people he leans on.
-Deku and Ochaco during the Bomb trial
-Deku, Froppy, and Mineta during the USJ disaster
-Deku and Tokoyami during the Sports Festival
-Deku and Dupli-Arms during the Training Camp attack
-Deku and Todoroki and Iida during Stain, as well as Deku and Todoroki during the tournament
-Deku, Momo, and Kirishima during the Bakugo rescue arc
Each of these are unique and interesting experiences for The side characters to shine, and more importantly, we see Deku form new bonds and experiences with them and seeing them through our protagonists eyes helps us get closer to them
I agree, and I think another thing that helps them be so loveable is that they feel like people. Not caricatures. They feel like actual teenagers -- they get scared, get wild and stupid, have fun, make jokes, feel embarrassed, etc. Do you know how stoked I was that they went shopping (though that got cut short) and had a pool day together?! Real teenagers hang out at malls together! It's a real thing! They fucked around at the pool (and it wasn't just an excuse for fanservice -- it felt like a real interaction) like real teens!
It reminds me of how mind-blown I was when we found out Hinata and Kenma were texting each other (I think they were off at a competition, after training camp? not sure). How many times can you think of an anime where teenagers are actually texting each other? The first time I saw that was in Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou, where the main character and his best friend called and texted each other all the time, and acted like actual teens.
It *literally* blew my mind that Hinata and Kenma were texting. Like real friends do. Like actual high schoolers. I don't see little details like that in anime enough (that was literally the second time I saw something like that). It was an off-handed moment that was forgotten in the anime soon after, but it's little things like that that remind you they're not like sims that only do important things when you tell them to. They have lives beyond what we see on the screen and are fleshed out, developed.
How do [enter chosen demographic here] actually act in [enter chosen setting here]? Authors that take the time to answer that and present that in their work get extra kudos from me, because they really take the care to make their world feel real.
I love how you worded that. When people say that its not that amazing, I point out how I cant name the whole class from assassination classroom, because there are some characters that just I can never remember. But I can name everyone in class 1a in boku no hero.
I was rewatching this today and I have to say thank you for bringing up the wine finally someone who gets it
Personally I think design might also play into why the side characters are really liked. This is a world where kids can literally have engines on their legs, so this is a great excuse to go wild with designs. The aesthetic of not only the character’s themselves but also some of their hero costumes can give off a vibe of who they are ex: Bakugou purposely wanting his costume to look intimidating because overall that’s how he’s perceived by most people at first glance: intimidating. Then again this isn’t done for everybody, but it just adds more personality when it is done. Making a character look aesthetically pleasing can also get people more drawn to them and make them want to see more of them because it’s just so satisfying.
Ok...

Horikoshi is a genius with character development. He even made rooms for all of class 1-A that defy their personality
Bro, I don’t know a single thing about storytelling/writing. All I know is this story has got me in tears ever since ep 2. Also, #bakushima. Fight me.
Thank you for showing shuutoku, love that moment of "haha, look, an intimidating setup for the team that doesn't win a single game on screen"
The biggest reason why these side characters are so appealing to me is that everyone is unique, there is not 'face in the crowd' (more-so in Class 1-A than B) and in my head they could be in their own show as a character. (but not Mineta) Heavens, even the homeroom teacher Shota Aizawa could have his own show (better than Batman) because of how he acts and is fleshed out throughout the series. Some of the struggles that some of the cast has to face alone would give for a good short story or series; such as Shun Asakura or Tsuyu Asui (best girl in my opinion reasoning coming from Manga and Anime). I'm proud to be a fan of this series.
in your intro, you showcased one of the best examples where the show does a very good job in doing the same thing and that is Assassination Classroom. Of course the main focus is on Karma and Nagisa along with the lovable Koro Sensei, but the rest of the cast also get their own highlights. The anime skips a couple of characters but the manga ensures each one of class 3E is highlighted
They're refreshing in the way that all fit a typical shonen stereotype to some degree, but always with a twist or creative approach, wich make them nice instead of giving the feeling that you already read/watch the same character a thousand times before. For defenition we shouldn't expect to know everything about a side character because they have little screentime next to the main, so imo the problem is when we have the feeling that we know everything about them cause literally the whole character revolves around being "the responsible classmate" or "the sweet rich girl with zero common sense", "the bubbly best friend", etc.
i can’t wait for s4 though, my favorite boy is finally getting recognition
Bnha is really the only anime that has made me love every member of the cast. A lot of them have their own charisma and great interactions. Though I love a lot of other anime’s too, BNHA might’ve taken the spot of number one for me.
In the manga (Slight spoiler) there is another character who potentially becomes a main character throughout a battle that really showed their true strength. It's interesting to see the way Horikoshi turns the simple cliche of "friendship saves us all" to something that's actually important, and it gives people a glance of how plot armor should be made. He does well in representing that while friendship is important, their own well being is vital as well. Some/most shounen animes completely rely on the characters self sacrificing personality, which is reliable and heartwarming. But after a while, it gets old (in my own opinion). Also, (spoiler) while Izuku and Shouto got their own moment to shine - beginning arc and sports festival arc - Jirou also got a moment in the manga which I'm extremely excited to see animated.
Overall, I think my hero academia deals with it's characters well, and doesn't cross the line of too much plot armor. Good things, good things
I love that we technically have at least 3 main protagonists (underdog/naruto) midoriya (hothead/natsu) bakugo ( most of superhero backstory) shoto. And we can even argue that there is more.
It's really a sign of how great MHA is that pretty much everyone I know (not to mention everyone commenting here) clearly has a different favorite set of characters. You're going something right if no matter who's on screen (other than Mineta), someone wants to see them.
(Speaking of whom, Horikoshi is a self-described "pervert" and loves putting perverts of varying types in his work - see the triad in Vigilantes - so I seriously doubt the creep's going anywhere. Unfortunately.)
i love minetta why cause the way they play him is genius cause his personailty is a setup for a self sacrafice his perversion for a genuine concern for a commerade but right now hes unintentinally fooling you all
This is actually something I’ve thought a lot about, so I have many thoughts
MHA has an amazing cast of characters who are almost all loveable in some way, but I don’t think Horikoshi knows how to juggle an ensemble cast this size. Think about Class 1-A. Deku and Bakugo are present from chapter 1 and Iida Uraraka and Aoyama are introduced in the entrance test, but the rest are just kinda plopped into the background and we just kinda see them and have to get her information from brief snippets and context until their 5 minutes on the spot light, a lot of which haven’t come yet (lookin at you, Hagakure). Instead of looking over each character and thinking about the many cool things they’ve each done, we do that with about half and then look at the other half and say “maybe you’ll do something next arc”. And we’re doing this almost 200 chapters after they first appear and have consistently appeared since. And that’s not even getting into Class 1-B. 20 unique designs and so many possibilities, but we’ve seen less than a handful get any sort of attention (if you can call it that compared to how much development others have gotten) and the rest are background characters with no lines or anything. There’s also the fact that the author keeps adding more characters instead of utilizing his existing ones. He’ll throw almost a dozen new people at the start of the arc and expect you to care about them immediately (which we admittedly do because, like I said, incredibly likable cast) but then just pushes everyone else off to the side. My point is that as MHA goes on, I hope the author has the sense to start doing more with his pre-established characters instead of just making new ones to fill roles the others could have
Kaminari is simply the best. *thumbs up *thunbs up
This video speaks to me on a spiritual level for some reason
Come on Mineta is relatable at least someone (beside me) met that one person who's a douche bag and was too uncomfortably kinky in school
You know it's pretty cool that horikoshi said he got ideas for a sequel that takes place of the characters after high school
I love your channel, keep it up! Can't wait to see where this goes.
Aizawa when he enters class: "a fuck I'm five minutes early. Well, might as well go back to sleep."
When season 1’s final episodes came around, I began to adore Aizawa. At first, he was just there, and I was indifferent, but now I just can’t help but love Aizawa
And All the side characters aside from Mineta.
I think it's similar to how the side characters in assassination classroom were handled. They were given screen time, but not too much but not too little and some form of significance and not just there to fill a spot. Fairy Tail as much as I love it does fail in how it's side characters are handled within the guild you have people like Elfman and Mira who have had their moments through out the series but then you have Jet and Droy, Droy never got any spot light time and his only character change was during the time skip where he gained weight when Levy disappeared and Jet's biggest moment is in a filler episode with the 24 hour endurance race. I would have liked to see him fight Racer in the Infinity clock arc, two speed magic users instead of Mira who just dominated him, another one is with Lisanna where a big deal about her being alive and returning the Earthland was made but then the only role she's played since was being Juvia's partner in the S class trials which was the arc after she returned and then in Tartaros she almost get's killed and then gets kidnapped, she really doesn't do anything for the amount of teasing we get about her before Edolas and then her returning.
Honestly, I think off screen time is what makes Deku pretty popular as well. Idk about other people, but most of time I find main characters to be fairly boring when compared to the rest of the supporting cast and I think some of it might have to do with the amount of useless screen time a lot of MC's get. Like, duh, MC is gonna have a majority of screen time, but when you take a step back to build up your supporting cast it also raises your main character as well because you're shown that MC has other reasons to keep going other then *insert tragic back story here.* Overall it makes ALL of the characters more likeable and adds a lot more world building that I think a lot of shows fall short on. Anime seems to be especially guilty of this and I have a hard time getting into Shonen series because of it. You can't expect to make a "super awesome" main character and then neglect the rest of the cast with short arcs and plain personalities. On the other hand you can't make a "super awesome" character and then have the audience thirsting after the back stories of the supporting cast cause all you focus on is the MC. It's a balancing act My Hero Academia pulls off well. Like you said, even the most unlikable characters are lovable and interesting in some way. (ₑₓcₑₚₜ ₘᵢₙₑₜₐ. Fᵤcₖ ₘᵢₙₑₜₐ.)
It also helps that Deku doesn't have the "Protagonist Black Hole" where EVERYTHING comes back to how awesome the protagonist is or their general existence. The other characters are allowed to have a life or feelings that don't have anything to do with him.
6:05 heheheheheheheheeheheh spoilers if you read on
Its Kirishima THE BEST CHARACTER
Kendo is the best, especially since the schooltrip arc! She's clearly number one, best girl by default!
6:02 the best thing is that I can think of two characters got that treatment
Assuming you read the manga. If not, just ignore this.
Are you talking about Kirishima and Tamaki Amajiki?
Jackman LeBlanc Kirishima and Mirio
We're talking Kirishima's development, right?
One thing that you kind of included but not really that I think contributes to the likability of them is the character design. Nearly all of the characters are very appealing. I'm an artist and love drawing fan art. Most of the time when I draw BNHA characters, I tend to draw the side characters. Not necessarily because they are my favorite (though some of them are in my favorites category) but because they all either have an extremely cool design, or one that grows on you as you watch the show.
Another possibility for Aizawa's intro: Aizawa was sleeping and Mic just dragged him to his class as a prank and Aizawa just happened to wake up then.
Okay but why do I feel so happy when Midorima showed up on screen?
