my brother zeke rip. played this song over and over back in the day. I was 7 yrs. it's a cool song. i enjoyed it.
Early Rock Psychedelic. Brings back at lot of memories from 8th grade.
One of my all time favorites
I could swear I've heard a version of this, not only in stereo, but flanged as well! I love the flanging effect.
Woah....had this very 45...we thought this song was so cool and different in the Summer Of 68!
This is the very best version of this song.
The third 45 I ever bought! Rock On!
nineteen in 1968 still love this song happy memories.
I was 19 too. Great memories.
That solo guitar riff makes this song distinguishable from all others.
The booming bassline does it for me every time. And then, there's the out-of-phase effect. Soooo very trippy!
the phasing effect is called flanging.
Back to my high school daze. I had this song of course in mono on a 45RPM
Groovy baby. Funny, I never knew the title. 😂
Keep all the greatest hits Music Mike
You have a real gift for sim-stereo, man. Beautiful directional cascade. Thank you for sharing this one!
Please take me back to the 60's - the GOLDEN AGE of ROCK AND ROLL!
Mott the Hoople : The Golden Age of Rock n Roll, great song
AWESOME!!! 😊
A psychedelic classic
Amazing..
haven't heard this since I was a kid in the 60s!!! Thanks 😎👌
The song refers to paintings by English artist L.S. Lowery, who was known for his urban landscapes populated with human matchstick figures.
great song friend .. thank you
I remember being reintroduced to Status Quo when they opened the London "Live Aid" concert with John Fogerty's "Rockin' All Over the World".
It's a status quo song.
@@larry9656 "Rockin' All Over the World" was written by John Fogerty.
Well done Mike. Good Job!!!!!!
Music Mike, you've done it again!! Thank you for posting this stereo version!!
good song.good band.
"Pictures Of Matchstick Men" was an Ideal Example of the Psychedelic Late 60's sound.....Perfectly blending with the times of Hippies...Flowers.....Peace & Love.....this song and others such as "Itchycoo Park - Small faces....."Ship Of Dreams - Quiet Jungle" have a psyche feel to them. Love It Plenty. Thank-you.
First four notes reminded me of Vanilla Fudge's cover of "You Keep Me Hangin' On".
BMP
Sounds great Mike!!
I've always loved this song. This is the best Stereo version I have heard. If you like Psychedelic stuff and Classic Rock, check out "Lady Samantha" by Orange Bicycle. Classic Rock with a Psychedelic sound combined. Anyways, very nice upload! -Henry
Mike will only present good sounding simulated stereo cuts on his channel. Great memory from 1968!
There my abslutely favorite song of all times
great job Mike
I want to inherit you music collection, you have the best stuff.
Well done, I also listen to rock having seen them 15 years ago. We have all aged since then!!! David in Reading.
Given their prominence in Europe over the years, hard 2 believe this was their only stateside top 40 hit!!!!
Great capture Music Mike!!!
Nice simulation, Mike. I'd love to hear a simulated stereo version of Incense and Peppermints by The Strawberry Alarm Clock. As far as I know, there is no stereo recording of this.
That's A Great Idea!......I'll get working on it right now. Stay tuned.
+MusicMike's "Flashback Favorites": I actually have a Simulated Stereo Mix of that on a CD called No. 1 Hits 1964 to 1969 I believe is the title years. I just came across it in 2001. It's still available thru online stores. I think you'd like the version. It was done using a "Delay Effect" that you can do on today's computer software. I did one of "Mellow Yellow" using this technique and it sounds pretty good for a "Fake Stereo" attempt. A True Stereo release of M.Y. was to be issued on CD a few years ago but was rejected by Donovan. We'll have to wait on that one. Thanks for your upload Music Mike.
The closest we'll get to "Incense and Peppermints" in stereo is the DES mix on this CD. The technology has advanced to the point that it's realistic enough to pass for the real thing... check out the sample and decide for yourself.

perfect record!!
That Missing guitar is now closed there in stereo. Thanks Mike
Hahaha. I love this tune! Thanks for stereo-izing it! :)
wish you lived near me mate! great work....
Flower power 1968 music
Muy buena canción!
the stereo version is missing a wah wah guitar
Great job on the tunes , Mike...you stay a step ahead of everyone else with quality and content. I'm a fellow resident of Columbus as well. I don't know if you remember this tune , It's Movin by the Robbs from 1969. If you could come up with that one , I would be forever in your debt...It is awesome !
Please Mike, we want a DES version of Israelites!
OOOOOH, the Israelites!
The Italian influence is evident on this song and on their album Picturesque Matchstickable Messages.
Karla Liebrandt how exactly ?
@@johnmenanno2152 Written by Francis Rossi.
Flip was Gentleman Joe's Sidewalk Cafe both from Matchstickable Messages from the Status Quo.
sounds nice
Deadly man
Wow!
is this a sound on sound mix, got studio stereo version in berlin in 1970 and it's really superior to this
Why did Status Quo become a heavy rock band after a massive hit such as this? How did the follow up do?
simulated ? sounds like true stereo to me .
Idk, when I was very young this scared me so much this tune
Wow
Old music is way better 😜
one night stand Rock band!
No. They had a long career in the UK and have toured recently, not with all of the original members, we would guess. Time has ravaged many of the 1960s pop/rock artists (read: Paul McCartney), but we would guess that the Status Quo would sound reasonably authentic, considering that "Pictures of Matchstick Men" is a relatively easy song to play. All you need for the lead guitar is a "Fuzz Box" plug-in just before the amp. It was popular in 1968, for about three months. We were there.
@@audioinsanity Thanks
Mike a true stereo version DOES exist I am holding it in my hands. The British Invasion Laserlight12317 track8 Lead guitar far left, backing track center and backing vocals hard right. Granted there is not much Phasing as in the mono mix, but ther is also a second version which I had downloaded years ago when WalMArt was doing downloads. But this is a good DES job none the less
You'll notice my introduction states "never a true stereo release of the HIT version". I think you may be listening to the stereo alternate take of this song....which does exist....but lacks the "phasing" sounds that make the hit version so good.
MusicMike's "Flashback Favorites" I have Hallmark album HMA 257 (a division of Pickwick) on which all tracks are electronically created stereo. There are twelve tracks on the album: [1] PICTURES OF MATCHSTICK MEN; [2] SPICKS AND SPECKS; [3] BLACK VEILS OF MELANCHOLY; [4] MAKE ME STAY A BIT LONGER; [5] GREEN TAMBOURINE; [6] TO BE FREE; [7] ICE IN THE SUN; [8] WHEN MY MIND IS NOT LIVE; [9] ARE YOU GROWING TIRED OF MY LOVE; [10] TECHNICOLOR DREAM [11] GENTLEMAN JOE'S SIDEWALK CAFÉ; [12] SHEILA; I always thought that Technicolor Dream had hit potential.

I don't understand how a song recorded at this time would not be in stereo, or at least recorded that way?
It all depends on the studio and the sound engineers.
@@henryjohnson1071 The song was recorded in stereo for the 1968 Pye album, but it was an alternate take with no phasing sounds. Chess Records, however didn't get the stereo masters from Pye Records in the UK, they only received the mono masters, forcing them to rechannel the entire album in blah fake stereo. There is no stereo version for the original single, though. A DES stereo mixed version does exist on CZcams.
I remember also the color of the record label was kinda off white.
I never let this one go... I've played and kept it all these years. Mono's better
The lp removed the Phasing that waifs throughout this single.
This one is like taking a ride on a psychedelic carousel with a gorgeous lady.
Aaaaah..... the wah pedal.
The "BC Years".....67/71....with time out for the ships and the ladies...'nuf said?
Used as a commercial at TARGET/ retro active
Completely forgot about the song.
Didnt vanilla fudge sample this song
Always hated the English versions, and all of the album versions over the years...THIS is version I heard over my little AM Transistor Radio in 1968 when I was 10..The one with the wah wah pedal...I guess us Americans had the right idea again...LEAVE THE FUCKIN' WAH WAH PEDAL IN!!!!...and these guys were FROM England...frankm62yroldwhitekid
Hated this song how did it make it to #12?
Great song. Reverse side one of rock's worst song. Sorry Music Mike. "Gentleman Joe's Sidewalk Cafe," if memory serves. "Pictures of Matchstik Men," was one of the all time best and certainly one of my all time favorites. That is in despite the fact the I remembered the horrible "Side B" because it was so bad (and even though for years I no longer had the single). Maybe by comparison to the "Side A" it seemed that way as well admittedly.😳😳
Sorry, but you're wrong. "Gentleman Joe's Sidewalk Cafe" is one of their most catchiest & melodic B-sides. The band started to sound repetitious in 1970 when Roy Lynes left the band and the rest of the members deserted the psychedelic pop sound for a more bone-crunching boogie style similar to Humble Pie & Savoy Brown, which they continued to formulize into the early 2000's.
