Vinayak Damodar Savarkar And The Early Indian Revolutionary Movement | Vikram Sampath |

  • As the intellectual fountainhead and founder of what is termed as “Hindu nationalism,” Vinayak Damodar Savarkar has emerged as one of the most controversial Indian political thinkers of the 20th Century. This lecture explores the lesser known role and contribution of Savarkar as a revolutionary figure and interprets the impact of his philosophy and writings on India’s revolutionary movement.
Right from his early days in Nasik, where he founded the Mitra Mela and Abhinav Bharat that galvanized revolutionary movements across Maharashtra and created contacts with counterparts in Bengal, the lecture discusses his leadership in leading the revolutionary movement in London as a law student. The coalition of Indian revolutionaries in Europe strove hard to achieve total and complete freedom for India. His works on Mazzini and the First War of Independence of 1857 created a vast intellectual corpus for revolutionary thinking in India. His associates carried on the activity even after his arrest, trial and extradition to the Cellular Jail, especially during the First World War, to get him and other political prisoners released.
This talk encompasses all these aspects of Savarkar’s stormy early life.

A little personal memory about Savarkar. His book about days in Kala Pani ‘माझी जन्मठेप’ was financed by my Grandfather. Again the book was banned & he lost lots of money & was left with heap of books he couldn’t sale. The ban was lifted after few years but tHe family got in lot of financial mess & Grandfather died in it.

Your grandfather was a brave man. Our nation will be indebted to him. We don't realize how many sacrifices our ancestors have made to give us the freedom we possess today. The way they have fought to preserve our Indic culture and ideology for 1000years. Its these sacrifices no matter how small that have paid huge dividends.

This is probably one of the most important talks i have heard in my life...For 33 years i have been in a bubble of this education system which has just simply dismissed contributions of V D Savarkar. I am shaken, by the sheer strength of character, and enormity of tests which life put him through, and in deep respect towards the grace which kept his spirits strong. Wow...More and more i am thankful to the rise of the so called and derided 'right wing' ideology in India. 70 years was enough. Now time for India to really take stock, integrate, so that our coming generations in next 25-30 years don't grow up blinded rootless and rudderless like us.

Savarkar was not handed punishment of 2-3 months to accept and be in jail...he was given 2 life times-50 years in Andaman jail...any intelligent being with common sense can understand that being out and do what is capacity is better or rot in jail and come out old or dead is a better option... however he suffered in Andaman around 12 years or so and in Maharashtra jails as well in house arrest for more than a decade. If he was a mafi or sorry leader he would be in foreign settled where he started work for freedom struggle...while all were in acceptance with 1857 as mutiny he is the one who strongly presented it as First war on Indian Independence and British banned his book which was later made available after ban was lifted ...he is a freedom fighter and a staunch Hindu who opposed orthodox Hindus and caste system openly...

Appreciate your video. Really Savarkar was intelligent, philosopher and very hard worker. He couldn’t not be understood in time. Many people accuse him still for nothing although he never blame Muslims, lower cast people. His dream was to raise India as a strong Hindu nation along with everybody. He treated cow as a useful animal not goddess. Ambedkar also helped him. Why do Ambedkar people want to criticise him? Why does Aparna Sen want to blame his philosophy? I just don’t understand. He is atheist. Such a great man would not down Muslims or people from other casts.
Like Sant Dnyaneshwar, he suffered plenty times in his life, but never cursed anybody for that matter. He left eating his food in the last days of his life. He selected death instead of life like Sant Dnyaneshwar. Why? Both were unable to remove darkness from the minds of people! It is very very sad!

Imagine if we were truly taught our authentic history, presented with the same passion and eloquence as Vikram narrated the story. Such an approach would have deeply instilled pride, respect, and invaluable lessons in young minds. They would have comprehended the profound sacrifices our ancestors endured, marveling at their unwavering brilliance and courage in the face of countless obstacles and unimaginable torture. It's profoundly disheartening to witness the prevailing lack of compassion and reverence for these extraordinary freedom fighters.
Congress and Marxist historians, who shamefully played subservient roles to their Western masters and extremist Islamic leaders even post-independence, must never be absolved of their betrayal. Their actions have grievously impacted our collective psyche, resulting in a distressing lack of reverence towards our freedom fighters. Why did this tragic distortion occur? Simply put, they systematically dismantled our true history, erasing the noble deeds and sacrifices of our forebears.

I really feel pity the intelligence of people having audacity to question the 'contribution' of Veer Savarkar and the like in India's freedom struggle. I would rather recommend our youth to read his Biography and themselve decide his place in our history!
