EP-25 | History concealed Ghori’s, Ghazni’s atrocities; demonized Veer Savarkar: Dr Vikram Sampath

  • Dr Vikram Sampath is the author of eight books including two-volume biography of VD Savarkar. In 2021, the Bengaluru-based historian was chosen as a fellow for the Royal Historical Society of the United Kingdom. In this edition of Podcast with Smita Prakash, the young author-cum-historian talks about India's glorious history; the unsung heroes including civilisational warriors. He elaborates how Lalitaditya Muktapida in the 7th century not only stopped the Arabs from entering India but also conquered parts of Afghanistan and extended his kingdom upto Tibet and China. Dr Sampath speaks about the heroic queens Rani Abbakka and Ahilyabai Holkar and explains how the notion that Arab invaders plundered Hindu temples in India only for economic considerations is “bunkum”. He also delves into details about Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan while explaining why Indian Muslims should be inspired by Dara Shikoh and not Ghazni and Ghori. The discussion on the origin and ownership of Mysore Pak serves as a dessert in the podcast.

True, Afghnaistan was never colonized by the British and that's why the true lions Afghans have no printing press, media, railways, roads, parliament, factories, cinema, trained army, ports, legal system and much more. Ghouri and Ghaznavi were Afghans and the true history is unknown to the world. All you have is British advertised history and then in the late 1800's history concocted by Viveknanda, Gwaliar, MahaSaba, Aray smaj, RSS schools of thought, to create friction and unite all polytheists under the umbrella of " Hinduism" and against Muslims. The truth is Northwest ( current Pakistan) always had cultural and trade ties with central Asia ( Afghanistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, Turkey) and attacks towards ganga Jamuna ( current India, minus Chinese burmes Tibet states of Northeast India captured by the British and included in India). Kingdoms of the Northwest such as Maurya, Kushan, Dahir etc have always invaded and plundered Ganga Jamuna. Mauryans alone killed 5 million ganga jamnis and destroyed their temples. There was no India before the British and no Hindusthan before Ghouri. All these Hindu, Hindusthan, India etc identities are given by them.

The concept of Bharat is as old as Vedas, Ramayan, Mahabharat . Many shlokas in BhagwadGeeta have mentioned Bharat.
Adi Shankaracharya established four Shakti Peethas in the north(Jotirmath),east(Jagannath Puri), south(Rameshwaram) and west(Dwarka) in the eighth century,
long before the advent of Afgans or British. He revived the Sanatan or Hindu dharma. It is very wrong to state that there was no India before Ghouri or British.

Water Conservation & construction of Shiva temples were given top priority. Ganapati Rudra, Rani Rudrama Devi & Pratapa Rudra were great rulars. They have constructed hundreds of Tanks which are still functioning like Ramappa , Laknavaram & Pakala in Warangal district. It's heartening and heartbreaking at the same time to finally see the real history coming in the open due to social media and understand the real richness of the indic culture, the invasions and the true contribution of revolutionaries through historians and thought leaders like Dr. Meenakshi Jain, Sai Deepak, Vikram Sampath and Anand ragathan.
Also seeing movies like Kantara becoming mainstream and stirring up the public imagination to get a deeper understanding of their local culture shows there is an awakening.
At the same time heartbreaking and get a sinking feeling that I hope it's not too late for us to truly revive the true Hindu traditions and pass them to our next generations.
So much the humanity / world is and will missing out as a whole if we lose a way of living which has an eternal values system so dynamic with an understanding of the cosmos and which had sustained over 5000 years to be replaced only by Abrahamic ways which are Static, time warped, expansionist and exclusive. There needs to be space for both to exist.
I wish and pray that we are at a cusp of the karmic cycle for the Santatan dharma after 1500 years of attack and the re-emerge brings about the true spirit of Vasudev Kutumb and it spreads across the current volatile world and brings a sense of balance, stability and harmony in the human race.

These Muslim invasions were not undertaken merely out of lust for loot or conquest. There was another object behind them. The expedition against Sind by Mahommad bin Qasim was of a punitive character and was undertaken to punish Raja. Dahir of Sind who had refused to make restitution for the seizure of an Arab ship at Debul, one of the sea-port towns of Sind. But, there is no doubt that striking a blow at the idolatry and polytheism of Hindus and establishing Islam in India was also one of the aims of this expedition. In one of his despatches to Hajjaj, Mahommad bin Qasim is quoted to have said :
“The nephew of Raja Dahir, his warriors and principal officers have been dispatched, and the infidels converted to Islam or destroyed. Instead of idol-temples, mosques and other places of worship have been created, the Kutbah is read, the call to prayers is raised, so that devotions are performed at stated hours. The Takbir and praise to the Almighty God are offered every morning and evening.” [Indian Islam by Dr. Titus, p. 10.]
After receiving the above despatch, which had been forwarded with the head of the Raja, Hajjaj sent the following reply to his general :
“Except that you give protection to all, great and small alike, make no difference between enemy and friend. God, says, ‘Give no quarter to infidels but cut their throats’. Then know that this is the command of the great God. You shall not be too ready to grant protection,
because it will prolong your work. After this give no quarter to any enemy except those who are of rank.”
Muhammad of Ghazni also looked upon his numerous invasions of India as the waging of a holy war. Al’ Utbi, the historian of Muhammad, describing his raids writes:
“He demolished idol temples and established Islam. He captured…… cities, killed the polluted wretches, destroying the idolators, and gratifying Muslims. ‘He then returned
home and promulgated accounts of the victories obtained for Islam……….and vowed that every year he would undertake a holy war against Hind’.”
Mahommed Ghori was actuated by the same holy zeal in his invasions of India. Hasan Nizami, the historian, describes his work in the following terms :
“He purged by his sword the land of Hind from the filth of infidelity and vice, and freed the whole of that country from the thorn of God-plurality and the impurity of idol worship, and by his royal vigour and intrepidity left not one temple standing. ”
Taimur has in his Memoir explained what led him to invade India. He says:
“My object in the invasions of Hindustan is to lead a campaign against the infidels, to convert them to the true faith according to the command of Muhammad (on whom
and his family be the blessing and peace of God), to purify the land from the defilement of misbelief and polytheism, and overthrow the temples and idols, whereby we shall
be Ghazis and Mujahids, companions and soldiers of the faith before God.” [Lane Poole in Medieval India, p. 155].

'Veer Savarkar' by Dr Vikram Sampath is the book we all must read and keep reading. Dr Sampath gives unapologetic, factual insights into the life of the greatest patriot, poet, writer, social reformer, protagonist, dramatist all rolled in to one. Gandhi, Nehru, Abdul Kalam... enough heard and read about them. Time to get to know about real patriots and country builders. That said, nothing is forgivable than to ignore, forget and not revisiting the history. Revisiting is very important because perpetuated fraud can be uncovered. The likes of Romilla Thapar, Irfaan Habib can die of shame and dismay now. How they received patronage from the then State and shined brightly ! What goes back, comes back. Dr Sampath, J Sai Deepak, Anand Ranganathan are now proponents of rising India, true India. May you all bring the lost glory of our motherland back. I only pray for unconditional support from the political establishment and unflinching support from the society at large, especially Sanatan People. God bless.

Firstly, one cannot thank both of you enough for choosing this topic. It was a supremely educating podcast, an eye opener, an 'awakener' if one may, that needs to be preserved and published in the interest of propagating the countless unrevealed truths of our history and civilisation. An outstanding literary contribution from both a journalistic and a literary perspective. Congratulations! And power be to you. Loved the humour that was naturally interspersed as well. Looking forward to witnessing the 'Mysore Paak' battle with Dr.Anand Ranganathan too!

Vikram sir's books are so great to read and thankyou for mentioning North East. It's like we are always ignored no matter many international medals come from hear, during calamities very few national news speak. The Ahoms were so great, humble , defeated such a large army of Mughals yet there's not a single mentioning of them in history books in school.
