Luka Doncic is playing at an MVP level and the Mavericks have bucked any presumptions that they may be the same team that let a playoff berth get away in the second half of last season. Even still have the Mavericks done enough to be taken seriously as NBA Championship contenders?

You can't talk about the Mavericks without mentioning the impact Dereck Lively has had for them. His rebounding and rim protection gives the team a level of grit they were missing last year.
It's crazy how bad this team immediately becomes the second he leaves the floor and Powell steps in.
Mavs fan here. Thing is...they are a lot better than last year and they can get better still but the problem with calling them a contender this year at least is the difference has been a 19 year old rookie that's gotten them from being the worst rebounding team in the league to 22nd. Now, next year, the year after you can bank on that being an even bigger improvement but for now they're gonna be pretty inconsistent on defense and on the glass.
They need a BIG 4 who can defend, rebound, etc. or a back up center. And LUKA should stop whining to the refs. Even if I'm a Luka fan. He should mature.
@@iamjude9650 That Lively with Holmes as a backup C 1-2 punch looked nice against the Lakers. Maybe they could use a bigger 4 but in 2023 also maybe you don't, depends. The last 5 years the Nuggets, Lakers and Bucks won it all with a PF at least 6"10 but the Warriors and the Raptors won it with Draymond and Spicy P who are a bit smaller. So it can be done wither way. Luka does need to complain less and get back down the floor though for sure lol
Honestly I think we need bigger 4 as well and definitely more rebounding and defense help like maybe Drummond or Capela but still that’s a tall order considering our roster construction
@@klf4177 Capela might be nice if the price is right, I think the Hawks wanted THJ and either Green or Hardy. Dunno if they still take that since both have backslid a bit statistically. Wouldn't go for Drummond though personally, last year I might have but now that they're heading in the right direction in terms of rebounding I wouldn't go for an otherwise bad defender like him. As for a 4, there aren't too many 6"10+ 4s out there that aren't gonna add to the defense without tanking the offense. Myles Turner maybe but the Pacers decided to keep him, JJJ might but no way Memphis parts with him.
Luka top 5 in the league. Rayce putting him at 9 was maybe the the most casual take I've seen from a NBA youtuber
I’m a mavs fan I think definitely the move is to go for siakam or OG at the deadline. I like this team but the rebounding problems can be frustrating the defense actually has improved effort wise.

Our center rotation is precarious with how easily things fall apart when Lively gets injured. We barely one against the Lakers after he left mid game and we were carved up inside by the Clippers the following game. We have enough depth in Guards but still need another competent rebounding and rim protecting Big

I've been saying their schedule has been so easy, they only played 6 games against above average teams and lost 4 of em.

Mavs also didn’t play the rockets when I commented so that’s 4 games right there. Gotta count that kings game too they’re playing great. I’m not saying the mavs are trash just benefited from an easier start to the season

I don't think you guys watched all the Mavs games (understandably). The Mavs defensive rating is the same as last year BUT in certain moments in the game, they will CLAMP teams up. It usually happens in the second half or fourth quarter. Dereck Lively has made a HUGE impact on this team even though he's 19 years old. The fact that we show signs of a "good" defensive team at times shows that we have the potential to be good on that end of the floor. We have a very young team outside of Kyrie and Hardaway. All of our defenders are 26 and younger. There is a lot of upside when it comes to the defensive end. But yes I do agree, we're probably one piece (OG Anonoby) away from real contention.

Mavs are in the way to be contender. With one (or two) new players they can do it. Players like Jonathan Isaac, Thybulle, Caruso, Payton II, Garuba: defenders.

I don’t think anyone that saw their sneaky off season moves was still thinking they would MISS the playoffs, I mean I had my doubts going into the season about where we would be with everyone in the west being good but missing the playoffs entirely? I mean if lively gets injured then I could possibly see it but still the offense is just too good to lose that many games

An easy schedule in the begining is a never a good thing. Hell I think by the all star break they start to come back to earth & look like last season. Luka starts to wear down, playoff stretch starts so teams pick it up on both ends & hopefully make moves to improve the roster, & that lack of defense starts to catch up when they play the more elite teams.

Idk about DJJ the 3pt % might fall a tad but he’s only shooting WIDE OPEN 3s 😂 if you watch film he only pulls it if he is completely open and he has been drilling them, I mean he’s shot 34% from 3 before on not great playmaking teams and now he’s getting wide open looks (another reason the mavs shoot so well from 3) and obviously this doesn’t work against every team bc some teams have guys that can kind of guard Luka without much help but most teams are leaving him wide open and he’s hitting em for now

Quick answer: No.
Longer answer: The team is much better than last year, the draft gave them a good player who can rebound and defend the paint against most players. But they still lack a great wing defender and a backup center for when Lively isn't on the floor. The backup is STILL Dwight Powell and he's a one dimensional player. So the answer is, they are not contenders at the moment, but they are working towards that goal, slowly inching closer.

We'll know how good they truly are in December. They've got the Wolves a couple times, the Nuggets, Suns, and OKC. Other games that should be interesting are Golden State and Cleveland. But yeah, this month will let us know where these Mavs stand.
They're not contenders. Like you guys said, their style of play is still Luka and Kyrie-centric and reliant on 3pt shooting and their defense stinks. That type of team does not win at the highest level.

Okay comparing dame and cj and what their ceiling was is just not on the same level of kyrie and Lukas ceiling, Luka can score just as much as dame ever could (obviously not quite as efficient) while being a generational playmaker and kyrie is just better than CJ in general 😂 CJ can catch fire but kyrie can put up a quiet 30 almost every night

It's amazing to see difference of opinions on Luka between the ones who actually watch the Mavs every night and those who just looks at the stats and some of his highlights.
Luka is not playing winning basketball. He is just stat padding and he might the biggest ball hog of all time. With his style of play, you can pair him with any other superstar the mavs would still get the same record. Everytime he is on the court it's Luka and 4 spot up shooters. He doesn't know when to take a back seat and let the ball to the hot hand. The Mavs offense is waay better, fluid and efficient when it's run by Kyrie.
I am not denying his talent but as a team, the Mavs would be way more better if he played off ball more, let everyone feel the ball, involved in plays.
A lot of people might see this as a lazy take but Luka is just a taller prime james harden with a little different offensive bag.

I think you're right. I don't think the Mavericks are true "contenders" without improving their defense. We've seen this twice with the Miami Heat, yeah you can make a surprise run in the regular season and the playoffs, but without a solid defense you're going to get exposed sooner or later. But do the Mavericks even have any pieces to trade improve the defense? Like, the Kyrie trade involved a pick in 2029 and that tells me that if they're reaching that far into the future that they probably don't have the current assets to get another deal done.
