- The Cleveland Cavaliers have had an interesting start to the 2023-24 NBA Season as they haven't taken that next step towards contender status like many thought they would. Their big 3 of young players Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen haven't improved significantly, while there have been ever increasing whispers regarding the future of Donovan Mitchell. With the Cavs season not going the way many in the organization expected, its time to wonder if the Cavs will soon have to make a big decision.

I know the draft this year isn't promising, but if you're going for a full rebuild, do you really tank for Bronny? It just seems two years of 40 years LeBron and a guard that is projected to, at best, be Alex Caruso isn't worth it.
I see Bronny going more in the 12-18 slot, where you can really make a playoff push with LeBron and not take away from the core (Plus it would be hilarious if Bronny is drafted by the Pelicans after all they gave up to get AD).
The Cavs would be fools to tank for Bronny. No disrespect to him, but he's not a highly-touted prospect. His name value is just that: name value.
Before the Mitchell trade, Garland was balling. 21 and 10 guy easily. Garland took the biggest hit from that trade imo.

I actually think Jarret Allen is a bigger issue for this team, we all Know the best version of this Cavs team is with Mobley playing the 5, cause with him playing the 4 the spacing falls apart in the playoffs and Jarret Allen isn’t really some untouchable piece

And I went to Game 1 vs. the Knicks. I felt bad for Mitchell. He was finding people open for good shots, and they kept missing. I remember Dean Wade being opened for a 3 from Mitchell, and the ball hit the backboard and then the ground. SMH.

As a Cavs fan, I agree with a lot of what yall are saying. I think though that you CANNOT trade Mitchell this season unless he demands it. Garland and Mobley being hurt for a while means that we won’t get to see this team at full strength for another couple months, and I think that if healthy we can make a run in the playoffs. Especially if Jarrett Allen keeps playing how he has the last couple weeks. The roster is actually very solid this year too - Strus, Niang, Porter, LeVert all good role players if the stars are healthy/performing we can be deadly.
The Pistons have a big decision to make too. Please sell the team

The Cavs may be a bit shakey in real life, but according to my many MyNBA sims in 2K, they are consistently a 60 win team and are always making deep playoff runs while having 3 All-NBA caliber players and 2 MVP candidates who consistently average 30+ a game. Darius Garland and Donnovan Mitchell might as well be Magic and Kareem or Steph and Klay in 2K lmao.

We've been dealing with injuries all year, at this point i don't really care unless they make the playoffs regardless of seed(and don't have to be in the play in). I think we're a lot deeper this year and Jarrett allen is more physical but Garland and D mitch haven't been able to share the ball as well, and Evan mobley hasn't developed as much as people thought he would. He's a little more physical but could be moreso and still cant shoot the three to save his life.
The Knicks get rid of RJ cause he needed the ball too much to be effective and Mitchell plays no defense so it wouldn’t surprise me if they don’t get Mitchell.

Tbh as a Knick fan the biggest obstacle to DMitch playing in NY might be the Knicks. With the OG trade we kinda unofficially confirmed that outside of free agency we don’t plan to make Donovan Mitchell part of the future of the team. We already have Brunson and we don’t need another ball dominant scorer on the roster. He could still end up in Brooklyn or Miami easily if he asks out of Cleveland but the biggest name I can see the Knicks getting soon is maybe like Dejounte Murray

You didn’t mention that Cavs had a rough start (2-6 I think) because Allen and Garland were injured. They’ve bounced back and I think they’re safe top4 spot in the east

Last year, I had season tickets to the Cavs when I lived in Cleveland (moved to DC in the summer). I suspected early on that Mitchell wouldn't stay because while the team was solid, it wasn't a title contending team. And Cleveland doesn't have a great history of building around stars (e.g. Lebron played with crappy teammates for years).
Gotta give it the season and see what happens BUT if he’s presented a max this off-season and doesn’t sign…you have to recoup assets and preserve the rest of the core. Sad but what else can we do.
It was always weird seeing Donovan Mitchell in a Cavaliers Jersey, it just doesnt seem like it was supposed to happen or be on that team, time will tell

a lot of this noise about mitchell wanting out is being pushed heavily by mainstream media. he is in cleveland now, has shown that he enjoys playing with the team, and has made no sign of wanting to leave. mainstream media just cant stand to see him in a small market.
The funniest part is that if he does go to a larger market. The media will forget about him and try to get the next good player out of some other small market. Don’t forget that they will also call Mitchell a ring chaser.
It’s hard for young talent to develop when you have a volume scorer on the roster taking a majority of the shots. Cleveland needs to trade D Mitchell and let the kids learn to win in this league.

I'm a little surprised that Darius Garland has taken a bit of a step back this season, his assists were a big part of his game 2 years ago. I get that adding Donovan Mitchell is going to change up a few things about how Garland played, but I honestly thought his assists rate would increase with Mitchell on the court. And regarding Mitchell going to the Knicks, that probably would make them the third best team in the East with only the Bucks and Celtics as superiors. But I once heard that the Knicks were looking at Joel Embiid in the near future. If Mitchell goes to the Knicks in exchange for assets, is Embiid even an option anymore?

Cavs fan from Cleveland here. Mitchell just isn’t a superstar. He’s never going to be the #1 guy on a title team. He’s really closer to someone like Jamal Murray. Too many nights he shot chucks and puts up horrific splits. The Cavs are screwed if they wait any longer than the deadline to move him. If he walks when he’s a free agent you loose him for nothing or you resign him and stay an above average team who gets pounced in the second round. Too much salary will be rated up by the Mid 4

At this point, given he's a really bad fit next to Brunson and the recent sentiment coming from the Knicks' front office and former GM Scott Perry, doesn't seem like they really want him anymore. However, I could see the Brooklyn Nets making the swing: it gets him to NY, the Nets have valuable draft picks and a couple of depth pieces to make a trade possible, and once they're off the Ben Simmons contract in 2025, they may be able to sign another star in free agency. A Spida/Mikal combo isn't gonna do much, but you add someone like Brandon Ingram to that mix, whole different story.

This is gonna sound super one sided but hear me out. If Mitchell is wanting to go somewhere for branding and be a contender, why not Golden State? Chris Paul and a 1st rounder or a couple of 2nd rounders, espeically if they get bounced in the 1st round again. Chris Paul won't be the scorer Mitchell is but might help to have some seasoned leadership in the Cav's locker room. Plus the picks on a young team could make a big difference. All that being said, the Bron/Brony thing would be hilarious haha

@@sebastianramones2722 True there is a big gap between Chris Paul and Mitchell but but CP3 brings leadership everywhere he goes, something the Cavs are lacking, and if this lineup isn't working after mutliple tries, I don't see much of a reason to keep it going. I think the Cavs view their main for as Garland, Mobley and Allen, get some picks and a vet in there and do what you can for those guys. Especially if Mitchell is wanting to leave. If GSW would do it, CP3 and a couple 1st rounders, maybe some 2nds but yeah.

Getting a Chris Paul or someone like that isn't necessarily about his on coury contributions but his locker room leadership. I'm not gonna sit here and say CP3 will have the same output on the court cause he won't but if he can help organize and boost the 3 members of this core, it'll probably make up the difference. Worst case, he's got 1 year after that if you don't want to keep him.

A lot went wrong in that Series against the Knicks. That simply was not the Cavs out there. It was an embarrassing performance.
I feel like I'm bringing this up every time Mitchell is mentioned, but for some reason since the start of the season his ability to create for others is consistently overrated, and that pisses me off.
Among the 10 NBA guards with the highest USG% this season Mitchell is the third worst passer statistically, behind Curry (who is having the worst passing season of his career) and Anthony Edwards (who is doing his best possible Kobe impersonation). In addition, he scores a little less and a tiny bit less efficiently than most of the other players in this top 10.
And it's not just this season; among the 15 NBA guards with the highest career USG% over the last 40 years, Mitchell is statistically the worst passer while being just average in terms of efficiency and scoring volume.
So here we have a player who controls the ball as much, if not more, than all the historically great hero-ball guards, while consistently being one of the worst passers statistically amongst them and without really shining in terms of scoring and efficiency. Is this really normal? Does Mitchell really have to have this kind of USG%?

As a Knicks fan I knew nobody watched us when everyone was surprised we crushed the Cavs. The Cavs were the only team in the league that we blew out consistently, 3-1 in the regular season, 4-1 playoff series, we had their number all year. I had high expectations from them, shit if LeBron ever leaves the Lakers he'd fit right on the Cavs perfectly as that missing piece

Garland is a pineapple and Donovan never intended to be there very long. Altman really squared when he made the Donovan trade. Why isn’t anyone talking about that. He was used hard by Danny.
