- Thanks to a new TV deal the NBA salary cap increased by 24 million dollars in the 2016-2017 season. This and a relatively weak free agency class led to some of the most ridiculous contracts in NBA history. Today we look back at the craziness that was the 2016 NBA offseason.

I met Mitch Kupchak (the Lakers GM) the summer of 2016.. I worked for a chain storage company where he rented a unit. He was complaining to me about how his rent went up $12. I really wanted to tell him “maybe you should ask Deng for some money back” 😂
You should've. That woulda been LEGENDARY😂
Now my hornets are stuck with him.
$12? Guy needs to take a walk 😭
😂😂😂CLASSIC😂😂😂
Thats hilarious and at the same time, makes me furious. Goddamn cheapskate in the wrong places
Miami really played the LONG game by having DWade whisper in Jimmy’s ear in Chicago.
Pat Riley was playing 18-dimensional chess
Remember, don't blame the players for accepting the money. Blame the teams that made the contracts.
Exactly never can blame a player for making money
That Blazers rant was PERSONAL 😭. I never quit grasped how DETRIMENTAL 2016 was to the blazers. All that money to like KD or just better players would have been so much better
They matched the Nets’ awful contract for Allen Crabbe , but at least he, and Evan Turner played games for them. Festus Ezili was”injured the whole damn time.” Urinating tree
As kd would go to this shithole😂
Thanking mike for Poop Henderson is crazy 💀
New CBA demands teams use 90% of the salary cap - buckle up for this becoming standard.
I honestly don't understand why this was included
@@nanathegoat5106Oakland As
@@JC3_420Plus with upcoming expansion it allows more talent to be spread out
@@nanathegoat5106cause guess gotta spend it somewhere
“Thanks Mike” yall regretting that now ain’t you 😂😂😂😂
I think the problem was that a lot of teams cleared out cap because they convinced themselves they had a shot at KD. So they cleared out $30-$40 million and lost out on KD, so they went “well, we’ve got all this money. We have to use it on something.”
The problem was every team suddenly had an extra 25mil per year to spend lol
@@ejiggleexactly and they had to spend it I think abs remember, really everyone knew damn well GSW was winning it all
The FACT that Doc legit gave his son that contract is crazy 😳🤯
Doc is a bum coach who's been coasting of one .500 season with a bad team and one championship with super team for years, honestly he could've done a lot worse then a mild case of nepotism
@@frameddonut1056what
@@SnuggieMaple Doc is a bad coach and his career lives from the hype of the 08 championship, which he contributed almost nothing to. He has the most playoff blown leads in the NBA and is constantly criticized by his former players for not knowing how to adjust when his tactic of "Let's ride our best players to a win" fails. And yet, he was considered one of the top 15 coaches of all time. He's a fraud. What was unclear to you?
coaches dont make contracts
@@frameddonut1056 What was unclear to you 🤓
What I loved about all these horrible contracts is that they continued to float around the league for years, making for some really incredible voodoo math to make trades work.
The Ibaka trade was actually even worse than yall made it sound for the Magic, because they gave up Sabonis and Vic and those pieces eventually turned into Haliburton for the Pacers, and Shai and JDub plus picks for the Thunder. Major yikes lol. Great video yall.
You guys can go even deeper on that Magic Thunder trade and basically say the Thunder traded Serge Ibaka for Shai Gilgeous Alexander, Danilo Gallinari, 2021 first-round pick (became Tre Mann), 2022 first-round pick (became Jalen Williams), 2023 first-round pick (via Heat), , 2024 first-round draft pick, 2025 first-round pick swap, 2026 first-round pick. Sam Presti is a thief in the night
It is SHOCKING that this channel doesn't have more subs. This is the most entertaining NBA channel I know.
No wonder the finals were always Cavs-Warriors during this time. Tons of teams were making bonehead moves
Love the back and forth banter 👍🙂👍 Maybe you guys can do a retrospective on:
1) Signing of Deandre Jordan (Mavs vs Clippers) 2) LeBron's The Decision
3) KD's signing and eventual falling out w/the Warriors
4) The Highs and Below The Belts of Draymond Green
5) 2010's Dirtiest Players
Looking forward to your next one 💪💪
I love me a 32 minute synthetic sports video
There’s no way the nets thought the worst draft bust of all time was gonna do anything 😂
This was like 3 years after that horrid trade with Boston they were a lolcow the phrase poverty franchise was invented for them specifically Anthony Bennett embodied the franchise at the time😂😂😂
@@SirskiMulafr
It was a vet min not like they threw a bag
Another great damn episode boys. Way better than 99% of these contracts 😂😂
Eric Gordon is the winner of the 2016 offseason
That Horford signing was wild cause I remember there was a source off at the end where one guy was saying he was going to the Celtics and another guy said he was gonna go back to the Hawks with Dwight
Genuinely super stressful but we got our guy in the end 🍀
Really love the content. I had a drought of not watching basketball youtubers for a bit but yall have got me back into it! Keep it up
Chandler Parsons is like top ten in the “most hated by Memphis” category for so many reasons.
One of my fav parts of friday is getting out of work, hopping on the bus and listening to a new episode. Thanks for the great job guys
i remember listening to the starters podcast and they were talking about how all of the new tv money meant that these contracts were actually all perfectly acceptable and smart. i yelled bismack biyombo! at my radio and stopped listening not long after that.
I look forward to these videos every Friday, absolutely love them.
Mike Conley was a franchise player and one of the most loved guys to ever play for the Grizzlies, he 100% deserved that insane over pay
what a great video. you should make this a series. good job guys.
Love waking up in the morning and seeing a new video from my favorite boys
One of the best and most entertaining channels on CZcams. Keep it guys, love the content.
I love your videos, you guys are really entertaining
Listening to you guys is so hilarious. I know it’s hindsight but I think every GM needs someone with y’alls brutal honest. Also as a hornets fan i remember nic Batum supposed to be some big star, he had good stats as a third or fourth option and they thought his numbers would rise as a 2 or 1 option. It didn’t…
The humor and wit is absolutely hysterical its so good enjoyed it thoroughly
As a Nets fan, love what we did in that offseason. We had no draft picks and just said "Fuck it" and just threw money at everyone just to screw with other teams.
I respect the USDA Certified Grade A trolling.
nah coming home from work to a synthetic sports video is paradise
you guys are entertaining asf! keep it up
This channel deserves more subs and recognition
I Saw your nonstop video 🔥🔥
Ironically KD could’ve formed his own super team with the thunder by them drafting sabonas and trading for oladipo. Adding that with kd and Westbrook and you got something special
Yeah, but steph, and prime draymond are def better than Russ and oladipo. By destroying the thunder KD joined a straight up unfair team and took out one of their best competitors. If he stayed in okc he would still have to beat the 73 win warriors.
FVF of Toronto was such a a big piece of that championship finals run
A lot of these teams problems is that they committed players to such long deals, if they gave the kitchen sink to a role player for like 2 years they wouldn’t be crippled
Tbh Dirk deserved every single penny of those 50 million he got. Bro took pay cuts every time he was resigned.
The best duo on CZcams
aye real shit, this channel needs more love
Love the vids - thanks
This offseason is why I'm skeptical of some of the deals getting handed out now
Love that "IDK because doing Cocaine is Fun thats why" Line from Rayce xD Every Time I hear it Im laughing hard because its to true about Bazemore's Contract xDDDD
We gonna look back at the summer of 2023 as the new summer of 2016
Man I love this channel 😂😂
Andre was a 15 RPG guy. That's worth a lot.
The vitriol in you describing Portland's offseason lmao
That hell no on the John Luer bit had me dying 😂
love ur vids
Jason Smith is actually still working for the Wizards, granted for the broadcast team instead.
I guess Washing was determined to make him earn that contract lol
"Is Dragan Bender still playing professional basketball in the world?"
"No, pickup basketball on a high school court doesn't count."
That back-and-forth response was hilarious.
i love synthetic sports
Saw ur big vic & feeling better?
It deserves mentioning that NBA teams must pay at least 90 percent of the salary cap and the teams couldn't renegotiate with players under contracts so that in part explains why so many unworthy players got those contracts; teams had to spend the money.
Yo I was watching the video but had to pause to like the video and give a hell yeah to the Roy Hibbert video sumdae
These are soooo good!
Sergio Rodriguez, One year, WHAT?!?!? 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
That’s literally whats going on now with the new condition of teams must spend x amount of the cap, idk why they thought that was a good idea
Tbf with Bismack, toronto brought him in for defense, like dgaf about points just play defence. Im sure this dude broke rebounds and block records for raps in the playoffs too, him and JV on the board was a madness
the nhl had the same thing happen around the same time
This season might be worst look at these huge overpays and underpays 😬
Cant wait to see the 2023 version
people reduce this offseason to one move and going through it just shows how few teams were even competent less than ten years ago at this. the warriors and like 4 other teams did some good moves but using money because you have it is dumb.
Ian was the starter for the pacers the year before and drummond was an all-nba player I believe so yeahhh they were banking on potential
I think they good with not having scoot 😂
That Batum contract is wicked
To this day, I watch this video for the Blazers rant😂😂😂😂😂
30:33 made me spill my beer 😂😂 cmon y’all
The trend that seems to have happened is if you didn't completely fail the 2016 offseason, you did pretty good in the 7+ years following
6:52 Preach it!! 14:16
I actually liked mozgovs toughness. Definitely wasnt worth close to the money but he was serviceable when he played.
This video is great.
How do you make those title screens at the start?
94 million for chandler parsons for 3 games. That sucks When they could've paid tony Allen. Vince n z bo each 23 million for 3 years and had a lot of money to work with
As a heat fan, the Dwade one was just so stupid for absolutely no reason. They told the best player in franchise history, that's primarily responsible for them having 3 chips in the first place (LeBron ain't coming to Miami without Dwade) and one season removed from Dwade carrying the heat to the semi finals game 7 against the raptors without Bosh and with Whiteside playing like shit before missing the final four games anyway "fuck you, kick rocks, I'm not paying you more than Tyler Johnson nor even half of what we're offering Whiteside". Dude was never the highest paid player on the heat and Pat wouldn't even offer him 50 million when he just did the same for Tyler fucking Johnson.
I remember the Evan Fournier contract well because of all the jokes about “don’t google his last name” going around (don’t do it btw)
17:47 nah we good with Brandon Miller 😂 even though I did want scoot on draft night
How's Scoot working out over Miller now?
Scoot is in his rookie year. Give him time.
@@urbaindelva7869so is Brandon Miller
@@barackojambaSome do better than others.
the Mike Conley trade was 100% worth it
I rmmeber thinking it was Kurt Thomas also 😂😂😂
The... vinegar and anger in his voice about Portland offseason
yall gotta contextualize by mentioning the nba has a salary floor of 90% of the cap, sometime you just gotta give guys money to not get penalized, perfect example is this season w the rockets giving dildo bricks 20m/yr
The Urinating Tree effect has spread
“And then they sign Loul Deng 4 yrs $72 million… Yeah because that’s how you replace Kobe…” it’s the laugh for me that comment 😂😂
Isn’t there like a salary cap floor? So some have to overpay to not be penalized
respect Jason Smith
shoutout Cole Aldrich i used to play basketball with his nephew
When will they react to the hoop family State Farm commercials with dame
I wish MJ would go like apprentice under Jerry West for a bit cuz I'd like to see Jordan win as an owner as well
The sequel to this will be the 2023-24 season with all these role players getting paid $100M’s
A lot of these contracts should have been like 5 or 6 mil max for these role players
In a sea of terribly bland CZcams sports commentary channels, you guys provide something unique in the art direction and dual convo commentary. You guys will grow quite a bit this year for sure
Fournier and Vucevic got them to the playoffs. He had 5 years of scoring over 17 ppg. How is that bad for 17 mil a year please explain to me.
Respect yourself. In what universe is 85 mill good for Evan Fournier
@@cole8957 When a player averaging 18 ppg has a salary that is not even in the top 50 ?
Pretty much every era.
RIP CITY BABY!!!!
I STILL MISS MARCUS SMART
Me too brother :(
Cole Aldrich shot free throws very funny… look it up
They saw the @Drafteados video
Too much Australian slander on here. Delly the goat
