When athletes talk about the "game within the game," I thought they was just talkin' about on the court. I never even CONSIDERED the politics of contracts & incentives in particular. Fascinating!

NFL is way worse cuz a lot more of their contracts are incentives based.

This is very interesting stuff, reminds me of Tom Brady passing the ball to one of his teammates so he could get the bonus. Now you know why sometimes players be mad and act out in the game for what seems like no reason.
So imagine if the public had access to those contracts. Betting would be way easier!

Except the whole story about force feeding Grant Hill doesn't appear to be true, unless he's misremembering some details. Hill had a few seasons where he scored around 15ppg, so I thought at first he might be talking about 05-06 season where he ended at 15.1ppg -- but Hill missed the last 20+ games of the season, and didn't take many shots in his last game that season either. I checked the other seasons where he was close to 15ppg, and none of them feature Grant taking a lot of shots in his last game of the season (or 2nd to last game either). The only season that I could find that even remotely seemed like the scenario he was talking about was in 08-09 in Phoenix, where Grant finished the season with 12ppg, and in the last game of the season shot 7/25. So maybe it was a 12ppg incentive clause? That seems a bit weird, but maybe I guess.
Message board, remember Antonio Brown? He went through the exact same thing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tom Brady wouldn't throw him the ball as he only need a few yards to reach his incentive. He knew exactly what was going on and went nuts on the sideline. People were so caught up in his antics, they didn't even listen to the contents of what he said.
People wonder why players like Tacko, Bol Bol and Bojan don’t get much playing time.. your contract will eventually become your playing time

I had a feeling that was the case for it being contract year, I felt the thrown last game by Doug P was something the same. This is a feeling fans get but rarely look into, but I’m sure there will be a documentary pointing out this hopefully
Brady stayed in the game one more play to Gronk his catch to hit his 1 million bonus. Russell Wilson did it also I think for his receiver but I think the offense coach called that play.

I’ll be honest this conversation kind of confirms the label Stat Chaser and Stat Padder. I think there's no doubt that teams will do everything in their power to avoid paying incentives especially if they're not competing for anything meaningful, but I find the Buddy Hield situation hard to buy. So you're telling me the Kings have enough sway with the NBA that they have the power to influence the refs to call that 3 a 2 and also compromise the review process? Also, the NBA is willing to compromise the integrity of their games all so that they can get the Kings to pay out several million dollars to a player?
