I would have been 4 or 5 my very earliest recollection right now.
Pretty cool huh. And I remember the hand me downs during the 70s and 80s. Yes, here in New Zealand 🇳🇿 times were even harder, BUT! FAMILY, Was everything. We never cared for money, we made do with what we had. So in a way, we were very similar to our extended family, The Waltons. Now 46, I look at the Walton family here on video, and miss them alot. Very much. My grandparents were very much alike the grandparents from the Walton clan. What an awesome time growing up back then. It's what this generation needs as well.
They need to be sat down, Absolutely no phones, and they need to see how it really was for people before them. If only huh.

Hello Hemi. Greetings from Pennsylvania, US. I was also born in '76. I watched some of The Waltons with my parents when it was in syndication when I was older. My parents relied on one income when I was little so we also made our money stretch as far as it could. I have since seen all the episodes and most of the movies. I appreciate the show's depiction of that time in the Depression and WW II. I hope you're doing well in New Zealand. Enjoy your day! 😀

It's the generation. I didn't grow up in backwoods on a mountain but in the suburbs in a small town. All the neighbors knew each other. We helped one another. Got invited to each others homes. Children played together. Well, I'm still IN my family house as I inherited it. I am now the 5th longest residing person in the neighborhood. Three are still the original owners and one a couple years older than me inherited her family home as well.
None of these genxers and millennials want to know me let alone be neighborly. Many of them are young enough to be my children now. I tried being friendly a few times, but they all look at me like I have 2 heads. I never understood why people want to live in houses in suburban neighborhoods if they don't want to BE neighbors? They might as well be in apartments in the city!

What fans and the show tend to forget is that the house belonged to grandma and grandpa. I just figured they were too sweet and loving to hold it over them. I love that everything worked out afterwards.
I never forgot it. Grandma and Grandpa replaced the original house that was built by Rome Walton, the ancestor who settled on the mountain with that big clapboard house. John once told John Boy that Grandpa had actually known Rome and that he said Rome had the biggest hands he had ever seen on a man. In fact, I think grandma and grandpa built the house themselves because Grandma once said it in one of her fits of anger. Which she was quite prone to doing! That kind of makes sense too since they were in the lumber business.
We need more love like this in the world.

Andy Griffith is a fictitious comedy sitcom. Whereas the Waltons and Little House are dramatic interpretations of two actual families where 2 of the respective children wrote about their experiences growing up. I don't think you can compare them.
It must have been fun back then, quilting parties, barn raisings. People working for each other.

I've always liked this song. Coincidentally, I just came across this Walton's clip. A few days ago I listened to a couple versions of Seeing Nellie Home by the Flint Hill Ramblers and the Country Gentlemen and for over 3 days now I haven't been able to get the song out of my head. Up pops this.

I've got up in a community in a small farm town where even still in the 90s the older generation and there kids and grandkids had that attitude the people are folks and neighbors are good friends. It's something that's slipping away and my wife and I try to make sure we don't let it go for us completely

Families singing together is pretty rare these days....
My late grandmother grew up in the city. She was one of 8 children. She told me that in the days before even radio, that it was common for her family to sing together, particularly on weekend nights. Her sister played the piano which was kept in the parlor, which was shut off most of the week so they did not have to heat it in the cold months. This was back before central heating and fireplaces and stoves were common for heat. But they would gather in there and my great aunt would play and they would all sing. Including my great grandparents.

I love this part of this episode, where the focus is on Mary Ellen as she turns into an adulthood.
As I recall the episode, Mary Ellen was dead set against the quilting because it was an outward sign that she was now 'available' and all the boys were expected to come a calling and she was expected to marry one of them as a matter of some kind of ritual.
I remember the Episode. Mary Ellen had every right to be mad at Grandma for pushing the quilting tradition and what it stood for, but she had no right to talk to her grandmother in that tone of voice. As for grandma she should have listen to Olivia when she told her not not to push Mary Ellen. Olivia knew what was about to go down after Maryellen threw flowers at Jason. John and Olivia Walton know their children better than they know themselves.

The end of the fourth season. Mary Ellen didn't want a quilting party and had been angry at Grandma for giving her one. But then she forgave her after John boy talked to her.

It’s funny how Mary Ellen didn’t want to have a quilting party because she was against getting married young yet she was the first Walton child to get married
It wasn't that she was against getting married YOUNG. It was that she was against what she considered to be an archaic tribal ritual of a quilting as a signal to all the local boys that she was now 'available' and that they were expected to call on her and compete for her hand in marriage. She was against her being regarded as some kind of prize to be won like a sow at the county fair.
She wanted to fall in love naturally. Which happened after she went to nursing school and got a job at the hospital where she met Dr. Willard. He was much more compatible with her anyway than some ignorant hill farm boy.
The episode was really to show how times were changing for the younger generation and how the old did not want to give up their only known traditions. Did you notice how, except for Olivia and Cora Beth (who was family as her maiden name was Walton) all the women at that quilting party were old ladies?

But I still hold with the opinion that Mary Ellen's issue had nothing to do with age. But rather the ritual itself and her being put on the market as it were. More as a chattel rather than a person.
