Hawkeye gives a serious eulogy for new nurse Millie Carpenter, who we never see and no one really knows. She is killed overnight by a land mine after a date with him.
This episode is written by Elias Davis and David Pollock and is one of nine episodes directed by the late Harry Morgan (Col. Potter). I love how they replace the laugh track with the singing and chirping of birds.

Any actor like Alan Alda, who can transition from spouting a barrage of Groucho Marxian wisecracks to taking center stage doing poignant dramatic vignettes and remain utterly believable throughout, is a great actor in my book...
paul simmons even his movies can do comedy and drama with equal success. He has even played villains in movies like the Wesley Snipes thriller Murder at 1600
He has been an actor since birth. He grew up in the theater along side his dad. Thank you Mr and Mrs Alda you created a hell of a great man.
He was great in "The West Wing" as the conservative Republican Presidential candidate in season 7, the polar opposite of his own personality.

@Trevor Rogert my God I’m sorry, nothing personal but that is utter hogwash, I’ve never heard a true M*A*S*H fan say “ the show should’ve ended after season 5- again nothing personal, I’m glad you at least enjoyed some of the greatest TV show ( for most of its entire run, I wasn’t a big fan of some of seasons 10 & 11) to ever air. I love that he included Charles in this. For all their childish interactions, he still cared about him.
That's why Charles was always better then burns. Burns was an asshole plain and simple Charles underneath his pompous exterior he was legitimately a good man
@@Fade2BlackMCfade And Winchester was a legitimately excellent surgeon in his own right, and had the civilian credentials to prove it. After the Burns character left the show the remaining team of MASH surgeons -- Potter, Hawkeye, BJ, Winchester -- were all genuinely good at their jobs as combat trauma surgeons, and they all did certain things exceptionally well. Personalities aside, their skill as doctors is what created a lot of professional respect among them, and Margaret was included in that inner circle of competent care-givers, too. Very different dynamic than the first two or three seasons with Hawkeye, Trapper John, Burns, and Henry Blake.

@Kris Bishop I have my 9 and 10 year old watch it with me. They are hooked.they love the light moments, and cry at the heavy. They might not get all the jokes, but I'm so glad they love these characters like I do.
M*A*S*H had one of the finest ensemble casts in television history with intelligent and sensitive writing and direction to match, pound for pound...

While there are many things which I love about this scene, I suppose that I like the most how Winchester truly does appreciate what Hawkeye has to say and is genuinely appreciative. A great cast and one of the best series to have ever been written. Alan Alda was and is a true gem.
And Col. Potter's tears. I'm not sure if that was "acting". I think Henry Morgan was genuinely touched.

MASH was probably the most powerful show ever to be on TV
M*A*S*H had an abundance of poignant moments such as this, and too numerous to list more than those that spring to mind...when Henry died when his plane got shot down on his way home, Radar going home to Iowa, Charles with his anonymous & generous Christmas gift to the orphanage and his interaction with Klinger at the very end of that episode. Amazing writing and acting.
Alan Alda's performance in MASH has made it accessible and relatable for future generations, look at the way he talks and behaves compared to many of the other cast, they're all very 'of the time', Hawkeye however seems like a character from the modern day. It's quite incredible.

amen, I know almost every episode by heart...some I can quote word for word. This is timeless and precious. The best comedy direction and writing with drama that makes this series really cut to the heart.
There was an episode where Margaret snaps on him for never being serious, especially in the OR and he explains to her that if he doesn't make a joke of everything then he'll have to realize that he's just patching up boys sent through the meat-grinder day in day out, just to go back to hell. I wish I could figure out which episode it was.
Some of that quote of yours comes from an episode where Radar is shot and he blamed Hawkeye for walking out on an operation. It was called Fallen Idol. [Seas.6.Ep.2.]
*[Hawkeye to Radar]* : "Look, you can't lay all that on my shoulders. Don't you know how much this place stinks? Don't you know what it's like to stand day after day in blood? The other one is S6.E14 called "Comrades in Arms" where Hawkeye and Hotlips share an intimate moment when they get lost in a war zone and confess many feelings and secrets fearing it may be their last day on earth.
But yes, Margaret frowned on his humour and un-military ways and he always had a wise crack:
*Hot lips:* "Why are such skillful medical hands attached to someone like you?"
*Hawkeye:* "Sorry, I come as a set."
Hawk also confessed through many episodes, that he would go crazy if he didn't have humour as a crutch or escape from the reality of the bloody current events

Today's shows make those kinds of expressions a fantasy instead of being so real.
Big Bang Theory came somewhat close: the off screen mother of one of the main characters died, and they had the opportunity to make something truly gripping, but the writers just had to end the scene with some laughter …
Alan Alda may always be remembered with a quick-witted, wisecracking somewhat offensive and self-deprecating edgy humor much like Groucho Marx (that he played on one episode) in his long tv character of Hawkeye, but in a few key episodes like this and when he talked to the character Psychiatrist Sidney Freeman in psychoanalysis he revealed a deeply complex, dramatic, vulnerable, tender-hearted side of Hawkeye that is so unbelievably sincere and somewhat unexpected in key episodes that it is remarkably amazing to be so Shakespearean talented. The episodes he directed himself were powerful too. Similarly Robin Williams was better known as a hilarious comedian, but his dramatic work such as 'Dead Poets Society'' and 'Good Will Hunting' showed his multi-talented skill and gift in touching human emotion such as dark tragedy as well as comedy.
LuckyLucy here is another Robin Williams movie may not have thought of and it was dark "one hour photo" Rip- Robin Williams.
GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM is Williams at his most M*A*S*H / Hawkeye Pierce-like; I'm sure Williams took a page from this show, and to great effect.

To me MASH is and was needed for many reasons. 1. Was to bring exposer to a war that most Americans forgot or didn't even know was happening (let alone cared unless they knew someone who was over there). 2. It showed both the light hearted and serious sides of war. 3. I think it serves as a reminder (though not often heeded in Hollywood), that telling war stories shouldn't be centered on blood or glory, but on the people who fought, bleed, cried, and died. That's why I think All Quiet on the Western front was such a success. Was because it told the story of the people that war affects and tore away the vail of propaganda, both good and bad. It brought The Great War from the perspective of history to the level of historical people. Though the main characters were fictional and events portrayed weren't all entirely accurate, it captured the emotion and feeling that we find written in the journals and letters of those who fought there. To me M*A*S*H brought the Korean War to society and portrayed both sides with indignation (i.e. crazy communists and gung hoe patriots) and showed the stupidity in war. I really wish movie makers would return movie making to telling people's stories rather than selling us some sex scenes and gore.

This scene really didn't feel like it was just acting, it really felt real. It made me tear up and this isn't the only moment it MASH that it could do that. Hawkeyes speech really heart felt. Paying his respects to not only the deceased, but his respects for his comrades, the living ad well. The sign of good actors that go beyond the acting, this was the best example from Alan Alda.
Alan Alda's an amazing actor but the two scenes besides this one were when he had a rash where he relived his childhood trauma and the final episode where he confessed about the chicken. He completely broke down and it was an amazing performance to see.

That damn chicken story killed me. To actually live it would drive anyone over the edge. I only saw it once. I can't watch it again.
I wore the uniform for 8 years and in those years I had to attend events like this more times than I care to remember. I have lost so many that in the end I became cold and calloused. It has been years since I had cried, I mean a real cry where I became a blubbering idiot. I had become so desensitized to death and destruction that when just a few short years ago I learned that one of my best friends succumbed to sleep apnea at the age of 31. He just got married a few months prior and started going back to school. I laughed, I was hysterical. I laughed so hard that cried for 2 days. I only just reconnected with him after 10 years. Dewayne Fowler, we went through hell together, you were my friend... my brother; I miss you so much. I will never forget you.
So sorry to read this, bud. Together with the nick name you've chosen for yourself, it hurt my heart. I hope that now, a year after you posting this, your life is looking up - although the current circumstances might not be optimal. Wishing you the best.

Cry when I was 12 and watching mash re runs. I remember my parents asking me why I watched such an old show...this is why! My dad once suggested I watch the movie, not the same without Alan Alda
One of the greatest shows ever, it’s timeless
I've never seen this episode before, but man I was nearly in tears at the end of this video. That eulogy was beautiful! One person that Hawkeye missed that he cared about was Radar, I know at this point Radar was no longer on the show, but both Radar and Hawkeye appreciated one another.
The background to this will actually make it even more of a tearjerker than it is already: you have to watch the episode to know what exactly Hawkeye read in the diary: I'm not going to spoil it.

Years after watching the first episode of MASH as a child and this show still makes me laugh, but parts like this, they make me cry because I FEEL the raw emotions from the acting. At times I'm not even sure the actor is acting when it comes to parts like this. That is why this will always be a beloved show for me. Even in 2024.

Alan Alda played Arnold Vinick in the last season of the west wing, and I feel like even then, he was still playing Hawkeye. Maybe not Doctor Hawkeye but, politician Hawkeye.
For me my favorite characters on Mash were, Charles, Klinger, Radar, Potter, and Father Mulcahhey Through these men you got what I perceived was a pretty good overall understanding of how a war like the Korean War could affect those involved and how they responded. Hawkeye buried his emotions in jokes and booze because for him the carnage was too overwhelming. A great cast that delivered so many memorable moments.

The level of acting, directing, and camerawork in this scene is incredibly top notch. Alda delivers a moving eulogy and even though the other main cast members have no lines the emotion and facial expressions speak volumes. Potter's expression of solemn fatherly pride and mourning for one of his own. Mulcahy's stoic admiration for Hawkeye. Klinger's acknowledging smile to cover how touched he is. Margaret's personal and intimate bond with Hawkeye. Charles' look of surprise, gratitude, and rare humility. BJ's genuine grin of warmth and affection. One of the best ensemble scenes in the series.

You expressed it so well! Even Hawkeye's voice as he mentioned each friend by name...respect for the Colonel and Fr. Mulcahey, friendship for Klinger, whispering Margaret's name, a slight pause before Charles's name, and a big smile for BJ, all expressed his feelings for them, and I believe Alan's feelings for his fellow actors.
A somber moment that is surreal in the embrace of war. To be able to capture such a delicate and honest thing is a rare gift that shines the light on what we really are; What we really feel in such a barren and desolate moment in time.
only a show like this can get you to laugh so hard then bring you back to earth in the next scene. Casting was so great they feel and look genuine. As an adopted Korean living in America I see this as also a time machine back to how the ROK looked at that time. People say the Korean war is forgotten to me it isn't.

THAT's acting chops. Alan had me all choked up. I believed ever word he said.
I will never forget this episode. I was still living (alone) in an apartment and had become addicted to M*A*S*H. And I was in the grip of depression. I cried during and after this episode and I kept thinking about for days. It reminded me of the episode where all the surgeons are dreaming strange and horrific things. The really serious stuff was always bringing reality back--in well written and well acted programs.

Alan Alda did some amazing riffing in the episode where he takes shelter in the home of a Korean family, while recovering from a concussion received in a jeep accident...The episode was simply titled, "Hawkeye" and its one of my very favorite in the series...

Yeah, I know right? There's been a few times I'd watch something and talk about it remembering something totally different because maybe I imagined how a certain scene would play out in my head and then come back to watch the episode later and realize it didn't happen the way I thought it did.

"Who Knew" was the saddest episode I have seen of MASH.
Saddest episode for me was when they had Christmas Eve and got one guy who was so badly injured that they couldn't save him. But BJ when realizes he had children suggested they will keep him alive till midnight so his children won't have Christmas Eve as a day, when their father died.
And at the end they they couldn’t save him they moved the clock up so it wouldn’t be the day

Beautifully written and acted scene. Objectively I acknowledge that there are many shows that are funnier than MASH, but subjectively I feel that, in terms of successfully meeting the goals it set out to achieve, and in terms of its overall production quality, it was the best tv series ever made.

I've watched mash ma many years as a teenager I watched it I'm now67
Usually they don't ban videos that feature clips... only whole episodes or distinct parts that assembled together make a full episode. Shame they took down the others. This one stands the test... I'm glad and hope it is intentional.
This was one of those epiphany moments about M*A*S*H. How underneath the comedy, there was an integrity and a message. While shows like this were done for entertainment and money-making purposes, it didn't mean they would be bereft of meaning. This speech by Hawkeye exemplifies what the show was all about. The worst (war) and best (people) of humanity. The lesson still needs to be learned today. Things are far worse than most people realize. And that's a recipe for disaster, because you need people to be aware in order to do something about it. If we wait until the radicals have nuclear weapons, the climate is pushed past the limit of tolerance for human survival, or the seas can no longer feed us due to over exploitation, it will be too late.

Not anymore and I was pretty ticked when Netflix took it down...I was only 10 EPISODES IN!!!! I had just gotten Netflix around that same time too.
It is now on Hulu Plus. Unfortunately, since most people have a wide screen tv now Hulu thought it would be a good idea to crop off the top and bottom of the picture so it can fit your tv screen.

This kind of scene is what made MASH great.
I grew up watching MASH and really enjoyed it. But what I have found though is that now as a middle aged guy, knowing what I know now is that I find certain sections in episodes or certain episodes funny, when as a child, I wouldn’t.
