    Surely the best ending to an episode of any TV series - ever. What a voice, what a piece of writing. If this doesn't tug at your heart strings nothing ever will.

    I'm so glad Mr Hamner had the foresight to narrate his stories himself. His beautiful voice and meaningful sentences are a gift to us all. ❤️Thanks so much for sharing this clip here. What gorgeous music!

    Beautiful tribute
    My favourite part
    🌳"I have walked the land in the footsteps of my fathers. Back in time to where the first one trod, and stopped, saw sky, felt wind, bent to touch Mother Earth.....and called this "Home"🌳

    This is one of my favorite episodes in the entire series. I love how the words flow together with the music. The best part of this ending is when he says, "My people were drawn to mountains. They came when the country was young and they settled in the upland country of Virginia that is still misted with a haze of blue which gives those mountains their name. They endured and they prevailed. Through flood and famine, diphtheria and scarlet fever, through drought and forest fire, whooping cough and loneliness, through Indian Wars, a Civil War, a World War, and through the Great Depression. They endured and they prevailed." I also love when he talks about Grandpa, Grandma, John and Olivia, Jason, Mary Ellen, Ben, Erin, Jim-Bob, Elizabeth, Ike and Cora Beth, and Miss Mamie and Miss Emily. And then John-Boy goes to say, "I have walked the land in the footsteps of all my fathers. Back in time to where the first one trod and stopped, saw sky, felt wind, bent to touch mother earth, and call this home. This mountain, this pine and hemlock, oak and poplar, laurel, wild, and rhododendron, home and mountain, father, mother, grow to the sons and daughters to walk the old paths. To look back in pride and honor heritage, to hear its laughter and its song, to grow, to stand. To be themselves one day remembered. I have walked in the footsteps of all my fathers. I saw yesterday and now look to tomorrow."

    THIS IS ART. WHOLESOME, MEANINGFUL ART. If only it still existed today. Can you imagine how the writers and producers of this beautiful program would feel witnessing the violent, gory, demeaning, vacuous trash (in general) they call television today?

    Now that is WRITING. When has any television show offered such beauty in words, such glory in sentiment outside of the works of the Bard? Nobody can do that in a television script. Even if they had the talent, they would not be allowed the time on air. Just astonishing.

    If the new "Waltons Homecoming" movie becomes a series, I hope when the time comes for it to end, they go back and redo this word for word, note for note. Its almost a shame this wasn't actually the final episode of the original series. Earl always drew back to it though, excerpts were recited in "A Decade of The Waltons", and again in "A Day of Thanks on Waltons' Mountain".

    I believe the tune was actually written by Jon Walmsley (Jason) himself...he is a real life professional musician (he was recently known to have been part of "Stephen Collins and the 7th Band" and was shown on Collins' former WB series "7th Heaven" in the mid 2000s). He was likely assisted by the studio musicians who scored the series. The song was never released on album, and is only available in video form (there are ways, however, that you can transfer it to audio cassette with patch cords).

      This piece is thought to have been composed by Alexander Courage, who completely took over the music for the show beginning with Season 3 (as well as the first four made-for-TV Walton movies).

    • @drawntomountains
      @drawntomountains Před 6 lety +3

      They also had Jason playing it, in the movie where he's considering selling the Dewdrop to go back to his composing and music full-time. I can't remember which TV movie it was, but Corabeth was into real estate, and was his "agent".

    • @itsabovemenow1016
      @itsabovemenow1016 Před 2 lety +1

      According to Judy Norton (Mary Ellen), the piano composition Jason plays was written either by Alexander Courage, who wrote the intro theme, or Jerry Goldsmith, who wrote all the series music.

    Did anyone know that this was originally written to be the series finale? ITS TRUE: By the time this episode rolled around, the shows fate was up in the air as ratings weren't as high as they used to be. Mr. Hamner wrote this episode to sum up the meaning of the entire series and to bid farewell in the event it was canceled. Of course, the show was picked up for two more seasons, but does anyone else think this would have been a better place to end the series...saving us from faux John Boy?

    • @itsabovemenow1016

      No. This was written by Jerry Goldsmith, who did the episode background music for the series. When you watch other episodes and listen to its music, you can hear chords very similar to the music talked about here.

      @@francesbuckley3415 I thought the same thing at first, maybe it is Jason Walmsley really playing as a treat. Then I started paying closer attention to the music in other episodes and it was very clearly more Jerry Goldsmith. All those music appreciation classes I had in grade school finally make sense.

    The show should have ended here.
    The first five seasons will always be
    perfection.
    Six and seven were still good tv.
    Eight and nine were not the Waltons.
    It took all of them to make a family.
