- The Waltons - Season 5 Episode 12 - THE BEST CHRISTMAS (1976) The cast sings... I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day...the singing starts at 1:07...This is the last Christmas episode with the cast all together. Shortly after this Grandma (Ellen Corby) had her debilitating stroke and did not return until the last episode of Season 6 called 'Grandma Comes Home.' John Boy (Richard Thomas) then left the series at the end of Season 5 and returned near the end of Season 6 for a two part special called 'The Return.' Art imitates life as 'The Best Christmas' is about Momma wanting everyone together for Christmas because she feels it will be their last one all together and it truly was because right after Ellen came back Grandpa (Will Geer) passed away while on break from filming, and the nation mourned. In such despair they could not make a Grandpa dies episode, but instead began Season 7 six months after his death saying that he died up on the mountain and was buried where he loved to be.
This episode was written by Emmy winner, the late John McGreevey.
Full song by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
and mild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along the unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound the carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn the households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong, and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail, the Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."

How nice to see Christmas celebrated on television.
This short scene embodies the spirit of the entire "Waltons" series....due, in no small part, to the wonderful narration of Mr. Earl Hamner himself. He is now ninety years old...which is very hard to believe. I hope he is blessed with many more years of good health, as reward for the happiness his writing, and television show, has brought to so many people's lives...including myself, his biggest fan.
I thought I heard Hamner died a few years ago, but he did live a very long age.
grew up watching the Walton's. still love it.
The waltons in my book are the best show on earth i just love the waltons i watch the show every week day they are on tv!
I Sometimes Think
The Walton's
& Little House On P
Are The Same Program.
Both Of Them Have
An Episode That Matches
The Other One
I am woefully remiss on my watching of the Waltons, but yes, this is much needed in today's age. I always was a huge Little House on the Prairie fan. Same ideals, same morals, same sentiments.
We all dream of a family like that
Grandpa and grandma are here:Lets get the party starteeeedddddd 😀
I love the Walton's!
The Bells of Christmas and the Ghosts of Waltons Past. RIP, Ralph Waite!
This gives me warm, fuzzy, good feelings.
I just absolutely love The Waltons and Daddy Walton. Ralph Waite was the best as John Walton too.
I LOVED THE WALTONS........WE NEED MORE PROGRAMS LIKE THIS..............
Since finding out what a terrific singer Judy Norton is, I always listen for Mary Ellen's voice in these sing-alongs.
Sweet
Christmas
Walton family
My favorite episode and this song is beautiful , God Bless Merry Christmas
I love "The Children's Carole" as well.
You know a show is a masterpiece of art, when you can see bits and pieces of it, and remember the rerun like yesterday though years have past, but also it draws to heart soul and mind recollections of your own childhood, family and friends. This show was of such good nature, it will bring a laugh and a tear, and that is strong. I never read the book, but I think I will. I wished there were shows like this for positive influence today, rather than the sex, drugs, murder and moral corruption shown on TV today. I miss these days....
The book is quite different than the TV series.
One of my favorite episodes from this all-time cherished TV series.
My first crush at 4 years old was John Boy and we did not ever miss a show…I miss having good family shows like the Waltons…Thank you for posting ❤❤❤❤
I enjoy watching the Waltons along with other shows with similar wholesome family values. This episode along with It's a Wonderful Life is a yearly Christmas favorite. I have to say this version of this Christmas carol is my favorite. Thank you for sharing this video.
A beautiful family tv show the waltons is my all time favourite show
I’ve just started watching the Little House series with my husband and our two little boys. I’m thinking The Walton’s need to come next for us.
❤just love the Waltons.
Michael Learned has a nice voice. And I love how the closing narration hints at what's to come for the series (with Mary Ellen working in a hospital, and her brothers off to war).
Don't forget the killing-off of Curt. I never knew why they wrote him out of the series. Did the actor decide to leave or did his character not work out?
+jensmom604 actor wanted to try new things
@@jensmom604 When Jonesey come on the show, there was an episode where somehow it was discovered Curt was alive but because of pearl harbor rendered impotent and He and Mary Ellen got a divorce? A different actor played Curt in that episode.
@@superstargonnabe He played one of the trapped coal miners in the movie about the pennsylvania coal mine collapse that happened in 2002.
So beautiful
My favourite episode if there is such a thing as a particular favourite episode for a series like this as they were all good. I've seen this episode so many times I know the dialogues by heart - a must watch every Christmas for me.RIP all those cast members who have passed on and thank you for making the world a more bearable and better place with this series - you contributed so much for so little and to the end.

A Safe & Merry Christmas to all we know and love both near and far.
I have always loved this show , it is the law , here in Virginia. I want a cup of eggnog.
agree w/ last comment!!!Favorite shows, wish was like that today!!!
And then just as Grandma had come home, Grandpa Walton got called up there. THat was just sad, but glad they tried to keep up with the show for a few more years just to see everybody grow up.
He still writes on his blog every few weeks and just received a few more awards for his writing. He was sick earlier this year with a virus, but has since recovered he wrote. I did not know that he wrote for The Twilight Zone.
Another favorite of mine is in the Christmas Homecoming. Patricia Neal sang I Heard The Bells to the other melody.
I love love love love love this Christmas episode

I just watched this again tonight on cable (satellite actually). I wonder how they got all that snow for this scene.
Excellent question. Does Virginia even ever get that much snow?? lol
🤗🤗❤️❤️
This must have been pre-taped before the November 1976 stroke of Ellen Corby.

That show was based on a very real Virginia family, the hammers. Earls family.
Hahahaha John boy is Luke I shall drink my cu-op not a good idea I'll sing!
The waltons are my favorite show, I am watching them now. Television has gotten soo complicated filled with too much vulgarity and violence until you can't watch t v with your family, the waltons provide that for us, alone with little house inn the prairie touched by an Angle, Dr Quinn medicine woman..alone with a few others.. But I love my waltons..
I think this is one episode I never saw :-( what is the title of this I would like to see if I can order it?
The Best Christmas. All the episodes are available on Amazon Prime. Merry Christmas! 🎄

Great scene, nicely sung. Wrong tune but this one may have been easier to sing.
This is the vest
The best😂
How come the melody is different?
This song has different melodies
Do you remember who wrote the words to, " I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day"??? Henry W. Longfellow!! Look that up and read the story behind the song...
I know the song but with a different melody which is better than what they put in the show
I always wondered who Kami Cotler was laughing at
@Lisa Murray. She was happy!! Wouldn't you be?! Look at the world now!!
Klasse! Aber bitte in Deutsch!
It was a better show after jonboy left grampa was the show
Very different tune here.
A simple time. An era where family was everything. We have lost that in the 21st century.
