as a disabled person who became disabled in my teens, i ADORED the fact they made hiccup lose his leg. it just meant a lot to see a kids character who’s the HERO have some sort of disability, and even one we see happen as well that isn’t framed in a very pitying way. not to mention he learned to adapt for toothless’ disability which just so happens to mirror his own, and they can take on the world together as disabled buddies doing cool shit. i still haven’t seen any of the other movies, but i know i need to sometime because i’ve heard at least the trilogy is really good

The first time I saw this movie as a kid, I was super impressed by the decision to have Hiccup lose a leg after his fight with the dragon, especially in a kids film produced by Dreamworks. It creates an interesting parallel to Toothless, since they're the same now.

Also disability representation for kids! I can imagine that it felt good for any physically disabled kid to see an amputee main character in a popular franchise!
Edit: I forgot, there are also lots of other amputee characters of all ages and genders, as well as strong female characters in every movie that are integral to the story
Edit 2: omg this movie keeps unfolding sorry lmao but this movie also shows how people with a common problem (i.e. being disabled) can work together to become strong and face adversity. Not only is this movie fabulously made, it's an important movie for ALL ages.

It's also pretty smart because it was Hiccups fault that Toothless only has one tail wing when he tried to captire him and Hiccup lost his foot because Toothless bit it when he tried to safe him at the end and grabbed him, so you could say they're even now. I think he mentions that in the second movie as well.

    • @jasperanda2769
      @jasperanda2769 Před 6 měsíci +11

I wonder how they would've written the story with that concept of Astrid being the antagonist of the movie.
It would change a huge part of the series and the plots we see definitely wouldn't be the same. We would probably see Astrid tell Stoick about Hiccup and Toothless, instead of keeping his secret and helping him. That itself would change a lot and poses some interesting questions as to what this version would look like. Would Toothless still be captured or would we see Hiccup running off to escape with Toothless? If they escape, where would they go and what would be their next step? Would we still see the nest in this version? If Toothless isn't captured, how would they find the nest? Would the other teenagers still help Hiccup? Would Stoick continue to despise dragons or would he still have a moment where how he sees them changes? What is the reason Astrid hates/dislikes Hiccup (Are her parents pushing her to become a great dragon hunter and Hiccup is getting in the way of that? Did a family member get killed by a dragon?), what is her motivation? It is definitely an interesting concept, though in my opinion would be a totally different movie/series.
I am sorry about the rambling, it just got me think about what that would've looked like.

I really liked Toothless’s interactions with Stoick in this film, especially near the end. It really adds to show that dragons are capable of complex thought like humans are. Stoick had been nothing but hostile towards both Toothless and Hiccup (that Toothless had witnessed), so he had no reason to save Stoick at the end. Saving him anyway proved that the dragons aren’t mindlessly evil. Plus the callback to the flying scene with Astrid too. Toothless didn’t reveal Hiccup was safe until Stoick had apologized for his actions.

My biggest problem that I have always had with Stoick, its the part where Hiccup is in the cage with Hookfang. Anyone watching obviously could see that the dragon was calm and focused ON Hiccup. So Stoick instead of, idk, sending people down there to stop the "fight" and tying Hookfang down like he wanted, he HAMMERED DOWN on the railing of the cage making noise which as they know confuses the dragons and ticks them off. So not only did he put his son and his people in so much danger there, later when the whole scene passes and they are arguing he has the audacity of saying Hiccup put everyone in danger (yk because of Toothless being there). And much like Dylan said he ignored what Hiccup was saying about the nest and going there anyway, and putting his whole village in danger because really what did he expect going there? Even if there was no queen, there must've been thousands if not millions of dragons there in that nest vs a village with a population of about 1000 people.
He wasn't the best father in this movie but he definitely redeemed himself later on.

The little animation of Stoick getting almost lightheaded after telling Hiccup he wasn’t his son is just amazing. That one animation turned Stoick from an irredeemable asshole to a misguided man blinded by pride and tradition who still has the ability to change. Obviously it doesn’t hit for everyone but it gets the message across for most. This is the Dreamworks I miss. This is one of the few movies I truely consider 10 out of 10, every fiber of it is made with genuine love and care for the characters and storytelling.

Physics major here. I made a lot of estimations, and I mean a LOT, but ultimately I got that a dragon of that size should have wings that are about 600 times larger than the ones it has in order to be able to fly (not considering whether or not it’d be able to move those wings, of course).
    So yeah, unlikely.
Some things that could potentially make it possible for such a large being to fly: a higher air density, a lower gravitational pull, having a ridiculously low mass, having jet engines.

This trilogy is by far, my favorite. Like three nights ago, I sat down and rewatched all three films back to back. Laughed, cried, felt all the emotions and in this first movie, I was like, 'Damn! Toothless is so amazing and he deserves the world!' His loyalty to Hiccup is so die-hard that he literally doesn't hesitate to throw himself in danger to protect his friend, and just accepts the consequences (even if it's not his fault) and the possibilities of dying so long as Hiccup is safe. And he doesn't even hold grudges which is so sweet. I mean, Hiccup shot him down and he lost part of his tail but instead of killing him, Toothless actually grew to trust Hiccup. Astrid wouldn't have cared if something happened to Toothless, but once she apologized and gave Toothless a chance, he was like, 'Okay, imma protect this girl, too. I like her.' And Stoick, too. After Stoick apologized, Toothless was like, 'Yep! I'm saving you too!' There were so many moments in this trilogy that broke my heart and brought me to tears. I friggin love this trilogy!
Edit: I'm going to rewatch it. Last year, the two movies I watched the most were San Andreas, and Godzilla (2014). I guess this year, it will be HTTYD 1, 2, & 3.
Watch the 2nd and 3rd movies. You'll understand why Stoick was this way in part 1, and in part 3...well, I liked the villain. He was pretty formidable.

I especially love how they built the lore into the story telling. If you pay attention, one of the training scenes actually set up the win against the queen. When Gobbler explained about the two-headed dragon, that one head produces gas while another lights it, it was actually setting up the fact that dragon fire works by producing a gas that they light in fire. Then, the scene with the tiny dragon showing they're not fireproof on the inside.
Meaning that when they fought the queen, Hiccup had to wait until the queen had produced the gas, which you can see if you pay attention, and made Toothless shoot before the queen could light it up-making the gas turn to fire while it was still inside the queen, and turning her into basically a huge hot air balloon filled with burning gas that exploded when she hit the ground. It's why they waited until the has was built up before Toothless actually shot at her and it's brilliant storytelling.

There is at least one type of dragon whose fire isn't produced that way; the Monstrous Nightmare's spit ignites when in contact with air. That's how they can coat themselves in flames, and that also explains both the things that confused Dylan in the early fight scene: the rock itself wasn't burning, just the goo that the dragon spat on it, and the "lava" on the pillar that Dylan thought was melting iron was in fact more of the same goo.

something i really love about toothless' personality that you might have not noticed is the fact that somehow this dragon understands the concept of aknowledging your wrongs and saying sorry. when he meets astrid he only starts being nice to her after she apologizes to hiccup during the flight scene, thats when he switches to a flight mode much more pleasing.
this also happens at the end of the film when the father and rest of the village think that toothless wasnt able to save hiccup from the fires explosion. toothless only opens his wings to reveal hiccups actually safe when his father shows true regret and says sorry.
this film is filled with little details that you only notice after watching it a hundred times (like i did) or after someone tells you and thats why i never get tired of watching it

It comes full circle pretty dang nicely in my opinion

The amount of expanding lore, character development and intresting characters they added has a lot of value. Sure some of it doesn't entierly fit with the movies but still. The series detailing what happened between the 5 year time skip had a lot of thought put into it.

Riders and defenders of Berk were okay but Race to the Edge was fantastic. The villains were good, especially Viggo, and it filled in the huge jump between the first 2 movies. Also, in a movie, they can only give the supporting characters so much screen time as they have less time and need to focus on the main character. The TV shows helped to flesh out the secondary characters a lot more

people are divided on if this is true or not but if to be believed: if you want to pet one and it isn't very used to humans, to show you're not a threat and respect its space, you have to use submissive body language at first - you aren't supposed to approach quickly head-on unless it's one that knows you well. you want to avoid hard eye contact and approach near their shoulders/side and watch for their comfortability before touching.
