IMO, that made it so much more intense. Like damn, she's really risking it all. The "contract," thing seemed too formal and not magical at all, so I don't know why the same people who're complaining about the movie "not being magical enough," find this change a problem? The signing thing, seems like she's buying a car, not making a life altering decision regarding her autonomy lmfao. I stand 100% behind that decision and am glad they changed it.

But the blood contract should make it impossible for Ariel to agree to it, I can see why she agreed to it when it's paper contract as she doesn't need to risk the possibility of bleeding out both before and after her transformation, making it easier for you to believe that Ariel would trust Ursula with no bleeding involved on her part.
I would also assume that the only thing Ursula suggests Ariel to use would be her only way to communicate as a mute human girl, considering her nature as a villain, she wouldn't leave the writing option for Ariel, and it makes sense that she would only provide one way to go around the condition of her deal instead of more than one way to do it.

I don't know how I was able to understand that as a child and went along with the story and move on while years later I see a bunch of adults saying there are a lot of problems with this masterpiece movie and want to change it, but they changed it into something I don't even recognize as the same masterpiece anymore.

One thing I really don't understand about this live action is how everyone, including halle herself, said the original was about ariel only wanting to go to the surface world for a man, and how they were going to change that. But in this movie it makes it seem like that WAY more. In the original, ariel had went to the surface multiple times, regardless of her father's wishes. She was always longing to live up there and she had way more experience up there than the new one. Who doesnt even go to the surface until she sees the ship passover (thats why they made scuttle a different bird. So she can meet her underwater).
Actually similarly, the change with "kiss the girl." They said that the original made it seem like Eric was forcing himself onto her, but SHE was the one who kept trying to kiss him, and he even turned away?!? In this movie she doesn't even remember she's supposed to kiss him??
It seems like the majority of the things they tried to change about the original story weren't even in it. And then actually implemented the nonsense they believed into this movie ten fold 💀 what was really corrected about the original?

I kinda wish they kept Eric being the one plummeting the ship onto Ursula as a redemption. It worked so well in the animated movie, and here's my two reasons as to why:
    1. Ariel saved Eric from drowning after the shipwreck, so having Eric save Ariel by doing the whole "sailing a (former) sunken ship onto Ursula's heart" brought it full circle. We observe land and sea protecting each other, showing how love for your kingdom and the other is worth protecting and fighting for; by having the sea (Ariel) saving the land (Eric), so the land in return saved the sea
    2. Eric's redemption: Eric finally found his dream girl. After the curse he's put under is broken, he says something amongst the lines of "I already lost her once; I'm not gonna lose her again". He redeems himself by basically wanting to help out Ariel against Ursula, because he loves her, and now he's proving it, by doing whatever he can to stay by her side and fight her battles alongside her. He spent most of the movie wishing he could meet his dream girl with the beautiful voice, but he unknowingly got to fall in love with her all over again. By thinking the girl with the voice is a fantasy and throwing his flute (something Dylan mentioned), he's throwing away the fantasy he's living in on his head, because he has *her*, and she's *there*, and she's his reality, and he fell in love with her personality, willing to accept her "no talking no singing" flaw. He got tricked into pursuing a fantasy, and once the curse is broken, he realizes he fell in love with Ariel *twice*, one he's willing to protect, because she's his reality and his fantasy all-in-one, she's his happily ever after, and he'd do *anything* to protect it
Having Ariel save Eric more than twice barely puts effort in the representation of land protecting the sea, which is not only terrible, but it also makes a very forced and unnecessary girlboss moment. Them saving each other shows maturity, protectiveness, and understanding of what a serious relationship is supposed to be: dedication and love to your partner. While this movie's Eric has moments where he shows he likes and has taken an interest to Ariel, we as an audience don't get the sense of him loving her as deeply as she does him because he's not protecting her back, making him seem (to me at least) immature, a bit whiny, and WAAAYYYYY too sheltered by being unable to take risks and own it

With that anger? Eric would've died immediately if he tried to do more. Ursula is Ariel's villain, after all. It's not that bad of a change to have her, the protagonist, take down her own antagonist.

For the reunion they should've had Eric standing on the beach, where he was first rescued by Ariel, blowing into the shell as a way of calling out for her (Also as a call back to that scene because it literally is just filler without a call back) and then Ariel comes up behind him (The camera angle is at the side of him, showcasing the ocean and Eric simultaneously) and Ariel says his name and he turns and rushes to her and scoops her up (Like Dylan depicted) and then he spins her around because he also does that in the animated film (if I remember correctly).

He's a good actor, but this particular performance just falls flat. Ariel deciding to go to Ursula is a direct result of that confrontation, but he was so monotone that the pay-off just wasn't there for me. He seems like such a cool dude IRL, but his acting is very bad. 😂 It was in Dune, too. But I feel like a lot of you guys don't like this movie strictly because it's not the original. Some of these critiques reflect that. Maybe it's just my bias of Halle Bailey, whom I adore wholeheartedly. As an artist, I really have a problem with the color grading of this movie, I understand they probably wanted to give off the underwater vibe and also hide some bad CGIs in the process by making it darker, but there was practically no contrast in a lot of the underwater scenes to make you see anything that is important to the story.
But in the animated version, even if the resolution isn't so well, you can still tell what you're supposed to focus on in the darker scenes because the characters' color grading make them pop.
From a plot perspective, I feel like the story of the remake is all over the place without clear focus points, and the story drags on with the extra material because heaven forbid we not make new songs that could get a best original song award, right? It also feel like they just don't want Ariel to get any kind of support from anyone, but getting support from the villain is okay for them simply because the villain happened to be a woman.
And how anyone could think that singing Part of Your World with the same intensity as Let it Go is okay while the song is a private monologue is beyond me.
I honestly didn't want them to touch the animated version and make this remake at all as I adore the 2D hand drawn animation style and the animated version, but I guess even that is too much to ask from Disney because they've got no creativity now.

Things I found really bad were, her father's acting, her acting, the god awful bird, the fact that they made Eric be adopted with no purpose but to add more diversity to the film, the way that they changed the fork scene, they didn't have the fish interacting hardly in Under the sea so it was super weird when he starts singing The newt play the flute, the carp play the harp, the plaice play the bass etc, and there are no fish acting out those scenes like in the animated film. I also found it super weird at the end when all the mermaids come out of the water and most of the land folk had never seen a mermaid and they're just totally expressionless, like they're in a trance or something! They also that she had amnesia and forgot she had to kiss him and I have no idea why because it doesn't bring anything to the film at all. It's a shame because there were some funny moments in the original where she is trying to get Eric to kiss her. Also like you, I found it way too long. Yes!! So true! Another book vs movie delivery that makes no sense/makes me cringe is in Twilight. The whole vampire “reveal” in the movie is so dramatic and over the top, whereas in the book it’s just a casual conversation in the car, with Edward calmly explaining the situation and Bella totally unfazed by it all.
Also, Robert Pattinson yells about what a monster he is, how she could never fight him off etc, where as in the book Edward says it all quietly and calmly, which makes it much more creepy and impactful.
Hits totally different than the cheese-fest they filmed.

One of my favorite parts of Live-Actions is the costuming: seeing what creative renditions they will make for all the characters but especially the iconic princesses dresses...so honestly child me was really disappointed with this film in that regard. There was no pink dress rendition, no sparkling blue dress when Tritan transforms her, no puffy-sleeved wedding dress - and they don't have to be the same, but I was really looking forward to seeing their variation of it e.g like Cinderella and Beauty and the Beasts. I wish, especially considering the movies budget, they could have given us some great costumes

I think the reason that they made Eric adopted is to make his desire for adventure and for a world outside of his current life as a prince more understanding, so he can connect to Ariel. They both want a life outside of the ones they have and feel like they are missing something, and in the original film, Eric honestly didn’t have much of a story or personality lol. In this version, he has a story and it makes him and Ariel’s relationship make more sense.

I don't know how I didn't know this before, but the story behind Ariel and her sisters' race is because Triton is the king of the 7 seas, and he has 7 daughters. So each daughter will inherit one particular sea, and ariel's heritage is the Caribbean sea. Every problem that I had with acting in this film, I personally blame it on the direction. • @Rikrobat
      @Rikrobat Před 7 měsíci +13

I think part of the problem is his voice / line delivery. He can be less scary, but we need more emotion in his face and voice to believe he's worried for his daughter's safety. Even lean into emotional exhaustion with a daughter who doesn't understand the dangers such that he makes the painful decision to risk their relationship to try and destroy her human keepsakes. But, to me, he just sounds tired like the actor partied all night before the shoot.

My thoughts when I watched it by myself: it wasn't bad, I enjoyed it, but there were places that I felt could've been better. I would've liked if we found out more about the mermaids. I like that they gave Eric a personality and that him and Ariel seemed to have an actual relationship of sorts. The colours should've been brighter, I really do think that. One mother and white dad had this many children who are all different race? I get representation, but that's a bit strange, but whatever. I didn't mind the fish talking, though they did lose some of that magic (love sebastion tho), the bird eating fish and then going underwater is weird to me too tbh. They didn't even have any sort of personalities or played any role in this. Also, I didn't like Ariel's outfit on land. She looked like Alice and that headband threw me off a bit. They could've given her a long pink dress in that same cut with pearls in her hair or something. Also, they just let her stay in the castle? At least in the original they thought she was a princess, but that's some idealistic kingdom right there. Also I feel like her hair could've been brighter. Ursula was great, her essence was just like the original.

I felt like overall the movie had more depth compared to the original when it came to the symbolism and some of the added plot points, like the blood-binding contract instead of a signed one, Ariel and Eric's connection with wanting to explore new places and feeling misunderstood, how Ariel cried at the end when there was the quote about how mermaids can't cry in the beginning, etc. Some of the comedy fell flat, but I was actually pleased with a lot of the decisions that were made from a filmmaking standpoint. it goes back to the phrase not making a ton of sense because mermaids are under water which is where you can't see tears. and then on top of that Ariel, at the end, is technically human. so she's not a mermaid. it's not a good callback at all.

    • @SunBeeSmoked

@@vincentdarkrosrayneyou literally just explained exactly what the quote is talking about. You can’t see the tears, you can’t see how much pain they are in, therefore they go unheard and suffer more. It’s like Ariel’s whole story. It relates to the very issue that drove her to going as far as giving up her voice. That’s why at the end she thanks her dad for hearing her and he says he should never of had to given up her voice to be heard. It parallels and relates back to the fact that her dad doesn’t see her suffering and therefore wouldn’t listen to her. He can’t see her tears so he doesn’t realize just how much he is hurting her. Thus by the end of the movie when she is human she is finally living a free life where she is free to not only express her emotions but have her emotions be heard and validated and understood, elevating her suffering.

melissa mccarthy really did do such a great job as ursula, it's crazy how often she tends to get overlooked as only a comedic actress. but really her strength in everything i've seen her attempt is she always brings a ton of energy to her performance.
which really as Dylan also emphasized is what this film reallyyy needed to be strong, just a ton of energy in performances, extravagant musical numbers, more energized camera work, vibrant displays of color- but the performances of ariel & ursula were def the standouts for me.
i also think the creators could have done something really interesting if they played up the contrast more between the human & ocean worlds, by making each vibrant but in very different ways. playing up with more contrast between the fantastical feel of sea life & the grounded imperfection of the human world, which ariel fimds so much fascination and whimsy in, prompting us to see such ordinary things through her fresh curiosity. esp because one thing i liked abt this live action version which the og didnt have is the opportunity to involve real cultural elements of the caribbean. wish theyd done even more of that

The ending is very different as well. In the original story, the prince falls in love with someone else and she is forced to choose between his hapiness and her own. She ultimately choses his happiness and safety over her own as a sign of true love and ends up dissolving into bubbles.

The reason why Eric was adopted was for two reasons, I think. One, since his bio parents died in a shipwreck and he washed up on shore as a baby, it's supposed to explain his whole thing with exploring. He feels like his origins/backstory is out there in the sea somewhere and he wants to go look for it. That's why he's always on a voyage. Two, since he lives on an island, he's the the only outsider. This is supposed to be a parallel to Ariel where they both feel like they don't belong (Ariel liking humans, Eric being adopted), and I think it was supposed to be a bonding point because they both feel like a fish out of water (pun intended). That's just what I think, though, not sure if it's confirmed.

    2. There was a contract between Ariel and Ursula but it was a blood contract not a written one like in the animated one. As many people have pointed out, if Ariel could write in the animated why did she never write a note for Eric whereas making a blood contract Ariel wouldn’t know how to write her name to Eric hence using the stars when he points them out to her.
