  • Dancers Marge and Gower Champion, were the definition of Poetry In Motion. Married October 1947, divorced 1973. These three uploads celebrate their appearance in LOVELY TO LOOK AT (1952), one of only 7 movies that they were in together. These movies were done from 1950 to 1955. It's interesting to note that Lovely to Look At is a remake of the Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movie ROBERTA. High class, high energy, very stylish, Marge & Gower defined dance in their era. Set your player to 720(HD) and larger screen to enjoy these videos. This elegant scene is just fabulous.

      Marge and Gower Champion made almost as many movies as Fred and Ginger. Marge and Gower Champion also danced on television shows and on many many stage productions. Marge Champion was a technically trained ballet dancer (it shows) and Ginger Rogers admittedly and somewhat proudly declared that she had no formal dance training whatsoever (it shows). Ginger says that she was just very lucky.

    As well as they were known, they were probably underrated. Fred with all his beautiful partners dominated couples dancing, and Gene to a lesser degree. Marge was great but I never fully appreciated how smooth Gower was. It did it so effortlessly. He had unbelievable timing and was probably a lot stronger than he looked. Watched this many times and I still tear up.

    in 1977, I worked in the box Office of the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco. At the time, Gower Champion was rehearsing Annie Get Your Gun with Debbie Reynolds and Harve Presnell. During my lunch break, I would sneak up to the second balcony and watch this brilliant dancer/choreographer rehearse. I was an aspiring actress at the time and eagerly took every opportunity to soak up as much as I could of the profession I sought to enter by observing masters like Gower Champion. Nobody knew then that he wouldn't be with us for very much longer when he died on the opening night of 42nd Street (which he directed) in the early 80s from a rare blood disorder. Happily, Marge is still with us.

    This was the great surprise of the film: as opposed to the Astaire-Rogers treatment of "Smoke" as an on-stage performance, this emerges rather organically as a love scene. They dance in the empty café, and when the camera zooms in on their kiss at 00:55, a little magic occurs when the shot pulls out to reveal the interior disappeared and replaced with a starry night dance floor. The scene is gorgeous- especially the final minute when the Champions (married in real life) swing each other around with complete abandon, and then actually kiss at the end. Stunning.

    • @vegas1a
      @vegas1a  Před 9 lety +7

      mca1218 If you watch this version then switch to the Fred and Ginger version, they (Fred & Ginger) are absolutely flat. No enthusiasm, they look tired, no energy. Marge & Gower really ace this dance, and those kisses would Never happen with Fred or Ginger. Glad that you enjoyed them.

      I never was enthusiastic over Fred and Ginger either. You've seen one Fred and Ginger number you've seen them all. Ginger and Fred were not about dancing but about romance. They were my favourite dancing couple in the movies when I was young and they were part of my inspiration to fulfill my dream of becoming a dancer - along with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. Hollywood certainly knew how to create the set and lighting to match the mood of the songs, this one in particular. Great camera work and angles with long-running shots to keep the continuity.

    Susan Glaser and Jack Anthony, after reading your comments about Fred and Ginger and Marge and Gower, I was thinking about Fred and Ginger performing almost twenty years prior to Marge and Gower. I always look upon film for the time it was made. Fred and Ginger were trying to bring dance onto film like Marge and Gower did. I look at Fred and Ginger as forerunners and pioneers in the genre. By the time Marge and Gower came on the scene, the public was more accustomed to the genre, and a more "sophisticatedly trained" couple was right for the times. I will never take anything away from Fred and Ginger because much of what they did was ahead of its time. Fred was already a great dancer. Ginger became a great dancer because Fred made her look great, and the chemistry was right. Ginger as an all around good performer is many times overlooked.
