  • Dancers Marge and Gower Champion, were the definition of Poetry In Motion. Married October 1947, divorced 1973. These three uploads celebrate their appearance in LOVELY TO LOOK AT (1952), one of only 7 movies that they were in together. These movies were done from 1950 to 1955. It's interesting to note that Lovely to Look At is a remake of the Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers movie ROBERTA. High class, high energy, very stylish, Marge & Gower defined dance in their era. Set your player to 720(HD) and larger screen to enjoy these videos.

I think is because you had a love that makes you fall in love so bad and just imagine the great times you and her had in the past, and associated that with this two male and female dancing together and them look so In love each other

Spend time with older ones, they have the best stories! My mum tells about dating, going to all the movies, summer boyfriends versus regular ones, changing hairstyles with the movie they just saw, whichever star was in it. Once the female star had a sort of messy, just got out of bed look, her mother hated it.
The clothes were gorgeous, they learned to pose by reading magazines. Lovely.

Courtship in the old days had rules that extended the romance phase. 😊 I'm 70. I was crushing on these people as a kid. By the time I was old enough to dance with boys, the music was Motown and pop and the in dance was the Jerk... and the Twist. Etc.

I had no idea Marge Champion was alive until Late Oct 2020... Whenever I hear Gower Champion's name, I think of My LA, Hollywood Grandparents' who lived on N Bronson Ave around the corner from Melrose & N Gower where RKO Studio Pictures was 'which later became Desilu Gower Studios in Late '57

Terrific! Merci! What a delight. They remind me of one of my favorite musical numbers from this era where a man and woman sing and dance across the floor, down the elevator and into the street and I'm talking about Bing Crosby and Jane Wyman singing and dancing to the Hoagy Carmichael/Johnny Mercer song, "Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening," from the film, HERE COMES THE GROOM. CHEERS!

Dorothy Fields, who rewrote the lyrics to the song for "Roberta" with Fred and Ginger, rewrote some of the lyrics again for this version. The intro is completely different (and very clever), and the line about doing "the Continental" is replaced with a rhyme with "accidental".

Funny thing is: this song isn't about holding off an unwanted dance partner, it's about liking someone so much that when you hold them in your arms you're going to make love to them, not dance with them... That isn't present in any staging of this number.

James Ryan, compare this dress which Marge is wearing with some of the dresses Adrian designed for the 1939 picture The Women. This was the "Adrian look". The dress fits the scene perfectly. Marge is playing a couturiere/fashion designer in Lovely To Look At 1952. You would not expect her to be wearing an evening gown while on the job.
