- A Fine Romance:The Magic of Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers
Movies: Roberta/Swing Time/Carefree
"it took awhiLe for me to finish this video because there are so many Fred Astaire & Gingers Rogers dance moments that i Love..i couLd have incLuded more in this one,but the goaL was to create a somewhat summarized/short movie of their unmatched pairing & this sequence of four beautifuL numbers just feLt so right to me as it is..Spread the Fred & Ginger Love everyone!" - Zábava
What I love most about these numbers is Ginger's dresses and the way they swirl and float all over the place.
At 5:40 her dress magically shortens and then lengthens again--editing, how many notice?
Yes, looking again at the footage, I see what you mean. Editing maybe. But that would be difficult.
Roger Propes it's actually the dress, it's bias cut so it's sort of like a slinky. it's kind of the same as Chinese hand cuffs, the more it pulls the slimmer and longer it gets. in this case, the twirling makes the dress sort of ride up thus shortening it.
Late to the party but I want to add that they used to put lead weights in the hem of the dress so it would flair elegantly :)
Thank you Kell + I believe most are affected by the beauty but few are really conscious of these clothes and even fewer recognise or have given credit to how difficult it was for Ginger to do what she did compared to Fred. She had to do all those steps, movements and gestures on high heels and often backwards to his leading. In addition she had to concentrate on the movement of the cloth of her dresses/ gowns. Everyone may think this was all by chance and the laws of physics but it was not. She made it look easy but it wasn't. To get fabric to move the way her dresses looked took much practice and focus.
I can watch these two over and over again and again and never be bored. They are just so smooth together..Class, elegance and grace!!!
That's exactly what's missing today, no class, elegance and grace! Nobody knows how to dress nowadays, they just walk around like bums!!!
Not just everyone can do this. In fact, more than 80 years has passed since and no one else has.
Grace and elegance personified. NOTHING beats Old Hollywood OR its actors and actresses.
They're the same person split in two I'm sure of it. He danced wonderfully with other people but nothing like this. They're something else their bodies just sing together. What a n absolute treasure to have all this on film.
the more you watch,,. how great ginger was in high heels, long dress, dancing backwards, jumping, turning,,, while he just danced on the spot,,,, great dancing together, but she was a delight,,, to watch,,,, and behold,,,, and great figure,,,,

Fred and Ginger dance Divinely together!!!
She follows his lead So Very Well!!!
Watching Astaire and Rogers dance is mesmerizing!
Absolutely beautiful. Watching them dance puts a lump in my throat. I cannot explain it but it’s a visceral reaction to something. Those two were so incredibly talented and Ginger was drop-dead gorgeous. IMO, she was the epitome of femininity, grace, poise, class and style.
I know what you mean.
I think Ginger has such lovely, elegant hands.
Absolutely magical. Transcends me to another place.
Never did any couple dance like these two.
These films won't be forgotten as long as I'm around, 22year old fan right here✨
18 year old fan right here!
These were the days when elegance ruled Supreme.❤
Fred and Ginger were the ultimate dancing couple, the likes of which we may never see again. 👍😁 Thank goodness we have these videos digitalised for future generations to marvel over.
👍🙂 totally agree!
But, I'm ok with never seeing another dance duo like Fred and Ginger.
There are few things in life that should never be surpassed.
Fred and Ginger is one.
Secretariat is another 😁
In general I don't like Hollywood Musicals but when Fred and Ginger dance there is just some Strange Magic that is created that is so fascinating to watch.

Can watch it over and over aga
Fred Astaire is magic smooth and perfection
The music from this era is actually good as it gives serious cues to the awe-inspiring dancing. Modern hollywood has lost essentially any and all magic it once had.
I adore the subtle communication. Beautiful.
Fred had some great dancing partners, but with Ginger there was a surreal magical chemistry that was nor present with Eleanor Powell, Cyd Charisse or Rita Hayworth. Eleanor, Cyd and Rita were in a class by themselves, but that magical chemistry between Fred and Ginger will never ever again be.
Billy Stine Eleanor was a superb athletic tap artist, but she didn't have the softness and giving in evidence with Ginger. There's the old line about 'he gave her class, she gave him sex', but it was far more than that. I guess it could be achieved again but the people who could haven't been born yet.
Also Miller, Caron, Bremer, they were all better dancers from tap and ballet backgrounds, but Ginger was a ball-room dancer, more elegant and graceful, designed her own dresses, prettier (except Charisse) and sooo svelte.
No matter how great of dancers they all were - I always felt they were just stand-ins for Ginger Rogers.
oh, yes, but Ms. Charisse! So lovely, even lovelier as she aged.
I was an amateur dancer for over 40 years, including Ballroom dance. From that prospective, not to diminish all great Ballroom dancers I was observing for more thsn a half a century, Fred Astaire was and always will be the best. Most elegant dancer of all time.
Fred and Ginger were the best.
I've watched "Never Gonna Dance" a million times. I'll go out on a limb and say that Ginger out dances Fred. Its been said she didn't have the precision footwork of Fred. Maybe sometimes, but she has them here. She's fantastic, especially those powerful spins towards the end.
The attraction of living in the 30's- music, dancing & movies of a vastly higher standard.
Also the Great Depression 😅
Back when dancing was beautiful, and the music romantic.
It is amazing how Ginger could gracefully jump 3 steps at one time. All I can say is "wow".
Now that is a truly graceful pair of human beings. It is something that approaches "Magical" but at the very least is majestic in how they "Flow" together like there are strings between them to synchronize the forward and backward movements. It is mesmerizing! She is one pretty lady. And she remained pretty right up until she died in her mid 80s around 1995. Her eyes could look right into your soul, then she would say something in her cute "girl next door" voice and WHAM, she had a piece of your heart. She worked so hard for what she wanted, and she got it, and deserved it, too. Can you imagine dancing like that in HIGH HEELS - OMG! I'd be in a wheelchair for life.
Their costumes are so beautiful and flatter both their silhouettes so good ! Ginger's white dress esprcially is magical.
Robertas my favourite film of theirs. I live the chemistry between them how well they work together
that dress. a kingdom for that dress
Once she was asked if she got to keep her magnificent dresses, her answer was, oh no my gowns where on loan from the studio, many costing a couple thousand dollars or more and some where designed by top exclusive designers.
Michelle Regis that was a lot of money back then, the Depression. Also, many of hrr male fans liked this dress best.
@@jjohnsengraciesmom Which dress are we talking about? Because I love them all.
I heard most of them were weighted, to give that lovely graceful swing. Delightful to see but pity to Ginger Rodgers' feet
The music composed for their films is beautiful .I love listening to the music of the Great American Songbook composers featured in their films-Jerome Kern ,Cole Porter,George Gershwin,Irving Berlin and others.💙
You are absolutely correct! If we could only have composers like this today.
Their breathing is definitely In Sync. Madonna was right they "dance on air". A treat to watch. Much respect to Ginger n Fred for those feet endured terrible pain to get those takes. Esp. Ms.Rogers in her heels. American Treasures. 🇺🇸✌👽
Her gowns!!!!! Elegant, to die for.
Фред Астер на века .Профессионал самого высокого уровня.И все партнёрши у него красавицы и талантливые
.
Now THIS is dancing! Priceless and unmatchable!
I watched these beautiful films for years now, they enchant me still., Fred and Ginger danced as one...a dance couple made in heaven., Ginger and Fred in and out of hold, barely touching, but together, wonderful...your magic lives on. Thank you.❤️
Ginger was so lovely here. Astaire is amazing and class personified, but it’s Ginger who steals this dance. Gorgeous dress and set. It’s hard to not watch her.
so much class ...so sad there isn't any in the world today :(I want her dress!
Real beauty is intoxicating to me i become often very emtional, as watching this video . Fred and Ginger's dancing was like a gorgeous element of art an expressive painting by Renoir, a sublime symphony. They're timing was impeccable thier romance was in thier perfect movements💖💖❤
her dresses where so gorgeous and their so dancing romantic equals magic
Absolute perfection and a total joy to watch and watch again. I have never seen anything to compare with this.
I have no idea how many times I've watched this, and each time is just as good as the last. What magic these two have. So graceful, so romantic yet so chaste and shameless. I'll forever be locked in the world of Fred and Ginger. The world is so lucky to have discovered them 💕
I second all your points! Their dancing was magical and interesting with no suggestive moves what they do today. They were perfection and classy.
They are just lovely..
Que pareja hermosa..!!!, lujo, perfeccion..Unicos!!!
The second sequence which is from 'Swingtime' (1938) was Ginger's favourite dance. It took 48 takes before they were happy and didn't finish filming until 4a.m., on at least one occasion Fred's toupee fell off at the end of a perfect take when she spins and Fred catches her. And yes, her shoes were red with blood on the inside but she insisted on continuing. Eat your hearts out Strictly Come Dancing!
+Jeff Wallder You can actually see that she is wearing two pairs of shoes - one on the lower level and another for those spine tingling spins. Her feet bled into the first pair and the director told them to stop but they wanted to finish the entire dance. Hence the new shoes which do not have the straps the original pair had.

Been watching fred and ginger since my mother took me to the Regal cinema in Clydebank in 1939 when i was 5 beforethe Blitz now 83 and never seen anyone like them thanks You tube
Ginger had beautiful hand movement and was always smiling with Fred, their dancing chemistery is magic. No other female dancer had this.
So beautiful! They were heavenly to watch!
What a lovely reminder of the beauty, grace and magic that used to exist in this world - maybe we can recapture that one day!

the word CLASS could have been invented for this
Bun
But by
Here I am in 2017 watching a dancing couple from 80 years ago and being mesmerized. Unbelievable. Some things never get old.
La belle epoque I'll be still watching them, it's timeless
how lucky we are!
You know those few pairings in films where you just know that chemistry doesn't just come from the script but from each other off the screen? These two were the first to introduce me to that sense. There's a closeness between them that can't be manufactured or put on.
Fred, Ginger and all that class & glamour very missed today
Grace, Pace and lashings of Style.. wonderful beyond words.. and that's just Fred.
As to Madame.. erm.. slim, fit, lish, GORGEOUS certainly and the absolute business.
I first saw them on UK tv as a child in the 1950's and have sat bewitched ever since.
Whatever happened to a world with lovely people and style, where today we get Fatties, and Tattoo's.?
Happy days.. I wonder.?
WF
I was born long after their movies were made, but this sequence is so beautiful it brings a lump in my throat. Unequalled!
Totally amazing, and so much better than most dancers of today
Спасибо за доставленное удовольствие !!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The Chairman of the Board. No one else like him.
Timeless
I cannot tell you how happy you made me. Thank you.
You can see from the list of comments here that Fred and Ginger's dancing unites the world. The world will not see the like of them for many a long year.
If it was 1933 i would be so in love with Ginger.
Jim Lambert Why not now? You can be in love with her now. I choose Fred instead ;)
I think the "smoke gets in your eyes" dance is quite possibly the most elegant dance ever.
Takes your breath away. Music, precision and beauty.
My father loved this couple, dancing, is just magic
Beautiful....superb....unique....romantic. They were made for each other and no other dancing couple will ever replace them.
I always find myself coming back to this video because of the ending, it's slow and absolutely beautiful and makes me wonder; if there is a heaven, I imagine this is how they dance if they've found eachother up there✨
Fred Astaire, the ultimate gentleman.
absolutely. men need to take lessons from him ;) however, there's no class in this world anymore only trash and sass :(
Perfection. Just sheer perfection. I own all of the Astaire-Rogers movies, I never tire of seeing them together. It's just...beautiful. So achingly beautiful.
That is so wonderful that you own all their movies ❤️ #goals
These ladies, they have to dance in those high heels & long beautiful dresses...just wow
I have always loved them both - but Ginger is my dream girl
La mejor pareja d baile d todos los tiempos
It is all about space, magic space, being near and far from each other, touching without being touched... wonderful !🎻
Just beautiful.
Every so often all the elements combine in exactly the right way, chemistry takes over and something magical happens. Best F&G compilation I've seen.
just class really..Fred Astaire just magic...Ginger always admire her dresses
Still love these movies!
I read an autobiography about Ginger Rogers in elementary school and had to dress as her to present my report..she had a fascinating life!
Music videos have changed a lot in the past few decades.
Just beautiful...wonderful music...I love when Fred holds Ginger, she lays her head on his shoulders., oh., wonderful.❤️❤️❤️
It is so beautiful ! Thank you for this moment of pleasure
+ Peter Taylor
The way I see it, the late great Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were specifically chosen by God to be the BEST dancers in movie history! It was their destiny! And there will never be another pair like them again! They had style, grace, elegance and most of all, class with a capital " C "!
Carlos Acevedo fcc
I agree 100%! They were amazing...they were the perfect dance partners! I've watched this over and over...so dreamy!
God rest their souls........ they live forever with all of us.

He is searching for eye contact with her all the time while dancing. This keeps the magic going… and we know it 💌. Ladies, what a dress 🤩.

What an amazing dancing team. Fantastic! Beautiful. Simply beautiful.
Love the last two clips from 'Carefree'. The Change Partners number where he appears to move her around with his hands, and the slow motion dream sequence from 'Carefree' are both so breathtaking.
