I love how we actually see a progression in the protagonists skills, her getting knocked down by recoil when firing for the first time makes it feel super real.

In the movie where a girl survives plummeting off a cliff just to get impaled by a tree, to the fact that every character in this film has enough blood in them to supply the Red Cross with enough blood to last a good decade, I think the ability to handle a firearm better over a few hours is the least of our realism problems.
I think her "death" in the movie, and the following phoenix symbolism, is is supposed to represent how rape (or sexual abuse in general) can effectively kill a person's entire character as they are, and force them to become someone else in order to overcome their trauma and move foward
That's a really good take! I also saw it as how experiences forces people to relive the trauma or "nightmare" repeatedly, effectively killing them over and over

What’s crazy to realize, is that 2 of the 3 villains, including the main antagonist, aren’t even rapists in this “Rape Revenge” flick. The message is that bystanders who see something, but do nothing… or those who find out about something only to cover it up to avoid drama, are just as evil as the perpetrators.
She's also evil by knowingly having an affair with a married man. All 4 are pieces of crap.

I haven't seen the film, but from what is shown in this video (especially the phoenix symbolism), it seems like Jen surviving that impossible fall is supposed to be metaphorical or almost supernatural. The movie presents a "what if" scenario, showing a situation where in real life the woman would end up dead (and the perpetrators would have gotten away with it) and asking "...but what if the universe said not today, today she gets back up?"

It kind of reminds me of The Crow, but instead of a supernatural entity giving her a second chance, she gives it to herself through sheer force of will.
Let's all appreciate James' analysis/ monologue about how it doesn't matter if the person (doesn't matter about their gender) is promiscuous, innocent, or anything else. Rape is one of the worse things you can ever do to someone
It's so important, one of the reasons I love this channel
James doesn't fuck around, and he doesn't mince words. He isn't explicitly political much, but he's clearly got background knowledge that isn't coming to the forefront in these counts, and his moral compass is facing the right damn way.
Also a surprisingly easy crime to get away with in the UK, where police and justice system are firmly behind the rapist, and quite often have him on the payroll.

wdym doesn't matter about their gender. He undermined male r victims the whole episode. Made it seem like only men can be r*pist, when statistically in the U.S men are the victims of this crime more than women. But this is a French film.
The inclusion of the giant ants is pretty interesting imo as there's a real life story of a woman surviving a skydiving accident where her parachute didn't open, but survived by landing on a fire ants nest of which the bites kept her heart going and she ended up surviving it. Can't say for certain that it's a direct reference, but I think that's pretty damn cool.
I just want to thank you for mentioning this, because I had never heard of the case and I love crazy survival stories. Very interesting read.
@@konstance13 Yeah Im glad someone mentioned it before me, I just added it as well, she fell 15,000 feet, or 4400 meters, the ants kept her heart beating and her nervous system functioning, basically preserving her body as she was in a coma. This 20 or so foot fall would be easily survivable, as far as the infection from a piece of wood through you, idk

Look up the Jennifer Schuett case, similar thing happened but in this case she was 8 years old, had just been raped and had her throat slashed but woke up due to fire ants biting her. eventually she was found and 20 years later finally got justice for what happened
@@jumjummy4614 Oh, dude, don’t even. I heard about that in my crime class. It’s terrible that someone could just randomly pick a child to do that to at night. A group of kids found her the next morning on the fire ant hill and thought she was dead when they ran to get help.
James going on a rant about the stereotypical "perfect victim" is just the best part of this video. I've been learning about the term recently, and yeah it is extremely infuriating as a woman to know I don't fit that category making it less likely for me to be believed or taken seriously.

@@hitcherhikerman my 2nd fave horror movie is the Remake of Last House and I also enjoyed Straw Dogs! Not sure if that one counts? But I found it in that category. I also watched that film Virgin Springs.
Agreed. I loved the movie, but I always found the idea of her running around a stick impaled through her for hours on end to be, a bit immersion-breaking. Survivng the initial fall is one thing, but living for so long afterwards without addressing the wound is a little much.

I love the mini-mirror narrative with Richard and Jen in the end; everything sort of turns around to quasi-replicate his experience onto her. He's in a place where he thinks he's safe (his home), and then she shows up to upset that safety in a moment where he's quite vulnerable (i.e., naked). She chases after him as he did her earlier in the film, gives him a wound that sort of mimics hers (in the torso area), and succeeds where he didn't in killing him with a long, pointed object (the tree and the gun, which, it feels appropriate to note here, is a rather phallic weapon). It's really quite cathartic.
There's also the concept of penetration. She penetrates his body with her hand, much like a rapist does with his genitals.

I know you say it isn't realistic that Jen survives the fall, but don't forget about Mary Vincent. She was only 14 when she was picked up by a monster while hitchhiking. He violently raped her for an entire night, then the next morning he chopped off both of her arms with a hatchet and threw her off a cliff. She survived by shoving what remained of her arms into the dirt and mud to stop the bleeding, and then walked totally naked down a deserted California highway where she met one car with two young men in it who drove off without stopping for her, and she almost lost all hope when a honeymoon couple driving a truck who were lost on their trip stopped for her and took her to the hospital.
She survived and is a victims' rights advocate and artist.
Her attempted murderer, Lawrence Singleton, was only sentenced to 14 years in prison and got out after 8 years due to good behavior. despite having previous offenses and possession of child pornography before his attempted murder of Mary Vincent. Upon his release, he immediately went and violently murdered a young mother of three in her home. However, since he committed that murder in Florida instead of California, he got the death penalty and died of cancer in prison.
The worst monsters are real.
This is such a difficult topic to preset and you did so in a respectful and sensitive way without losing the quality and comedy of your other work. I am impressed and humbled. Thank you.

Sexual Assault is one of my biggest fears as a woman, and I really respect your statement about the nature of the crime: unexcusable, reprehensible and saddeningly common. I hope one day we don't have to have an outright statement like this made because some don't see it as the truth. I hope you see the growth you deserve for this and your other feats.

It starts at 7:07, it's mostly off-screen in the clips they use, with no visible penetration, and predominantly from the waist up. It stops at 7:30, when James pauses to talk about the portrayal of women in the Rape-Revenge genre.

I haven’t watched this film, I’ve only ever seen clips and then this kill count. As a rape victim, I actually love how Jen (fun coincidence my name is Jenny) is portrayed in this. She is a strong badass who in an idealistic and stylistic world got the kind of revenge I dreamed of but never got. I love that she isn’t portrayed as this innocent girl, people who have sex and flirt a lot can be raped too. I actually really appreciated the background interviews from this kill count. Seems like a good film.

Rape is always a crime, always a despicable act from the rapist. Kudos to the director for giving this example.
I think they went too far by having her knowingly sleep with a married man, though. The whole "her sexual choices should be in her control" thing doesn't really work when her sexual choices are hurting an innocent victim. She still doesn't deserve to be raped, obviously, but I prefer to actually like the protaganist of a story. I can't really like someone that selfish and shallow.

@@plaguedoctorjamespainshe6009 Like I said, I don't believe that she deserved to be raped, but in a revenge story like this, being able to fully sympathize with the protagonist is very important for the story to work. I just can't bring myself to be emotionally invested in a character like her.
I know some people don't have a problem with unlikeable protagonists. This is all just my opinion. I'm not a fan of rape revenge movies, so this movie was never going to be my cup of tea anyway.
@@Shinigami41395 We tend to justify bad things happening to people who aren't conventionally "likeable." I think that's the point of the movie. A lot of rape victims who party get part of the blame. A lot of hood teenagers who get shot by cops are thought to "have it coming."
I just think the director made a bold choice in the storytelling and I hope it opens some eyes. "Not likeable" doesn't mean they should get part of the blame for a horrible thing that happens to them!

@@mikec5400 women who, like myself have experienced sexual assault can find the horror genre to be triggering for ptsd, and can cause flashbacks, disassociation and depressive episodes. By treating the matter with care and sensitivity (which many male horror fans I have met have not) they allow space for the discussion and enjoyment of the film without potential damage to women for whom this matter is deeply distressing. I hope this explanation helps ❤️
@@mikec5400 I wanna add to what Caseratti said by mentioning that people don't always need a safe space because someone is actively trying to harm them. For example a woman may not be actively getting harmed by a dangerous man, but she might seek out spaces without dangerous men in them so she doesn't get hurt in the future. Does that make sense? people flock to spaces where they don't feel invalidated and belittled because at the end of the day no one wants to feel either of those things. When it comes to topics like sexual assault it can be really hard for women to just exist in spaces where there's dialogue because of the amount of victim blaming they experience regularly and systematically. Men and non binary folks too (it's not isolated to gender)

Exactly!! That's what I love about dead meat. They address sensitive topics and address them for what they are. In this case, James addressed what I wish many men would, that women do not deserve sexual assault for what she was wearing or doing. If she was wearing a bra and underwear in public, that is NOT a excuse to sexually hurt her. Men as well, say if a dude was wearing a Speedo, that is NOT a excuse to sexually hurt him, or a woman.
"He said he just a friend". With all his funny material doing kill count, James could make a "Scary Movie" reboot that could be just as good as the original one.

The acting in this movie is phenomenal. They all melt into the roles and manage to sell distress and pain perfectly. I was actually holding my breath during that foot scene.

I just realized that the painting in the background at 18:53 makes it look like Jen's hand is up against the glass like she's pressed up against it, and that Stan is on the other side of her with a far bigger presence and with a gun emphasizing and foreshadowing his power over her in later events. Got to give props to the director and cinematographer. I love it when movies foreshadow visually like this.

You know, between situations like this where the summarization of the kills calls back to things like thematic presence (the whole him turning a blind eye then literally being blinded), and the obvious enthusiasm for the PROCESS of filmmaking - it is pretty obvious what sets Dead Meat apart from any other channel that does a similar thing.

I was just praising those behind the channel for their dedication to the material they cover, which is evident not only in the passion of their presentation, but in the fact that they take an extra step to explain imagery and thematic resonance (such as discussing the conversation surrounding gender norms, how the film explores these topics through things like the framing of the colored windows).
I just find that to be neat. Most people watch a film and go "haha, it's fun because violent" which is all well and good, but when a film is clearly trying to tell a story it's refreshing to see someone engage with it in such an interesting way and call attention to details which is more than one would expect when first viewing a channel dedicated to counting kills.

The plot of the Halle Berry Catwoman movie, but... not badly written.
I love that this movie portrays the victim as someone who’s okay with her sexuality, in reality no victim is as innocent as the media or some men see them, but that doesn’t mean that people should assault them, no matter how “inviting” or how “pure” they might be

Similar to I Saw the Devil. Although that isn't really about hunted becoming the hunter. And instead is more about becoming a monster in order to fight a monster. Although you could consider it also being about a hunter becoming the hunted. As the antagonist is a serial killer of women. And the protagonist then hunts him for the entire rest of the film.
One of the most violent movies I've seen, yet it has one of the most satisfying endings for sure. Revenge is a dish best served cold.

as a woman who has been assaulted and is confident in her sexuality, this film felt very liberating in a way. I would never actually harm them if given the chance because I've already dealt with it, but in Jen's mindset where she's just been assaulted and she has the ability and in court she can defend herself because dude literally pushed her off a cliff and the others actively tried to kill her. to see a woman taking vengeance on her rapists is awesome to see in this case. sorry if this is blunt or harsh, but I deeply enjoyed watching those assholes die 🤷🏻♀️

There's a lot of metaphor going on in the broken glass trick on Stan; the glass non-consensually enters his foot and forms a vaginal looking wound which he then has to painfully penetrate to take the glass out. Jen basically forces him to treat his body the way he treated hers. Also if we view the car as a vaginal symbol, Jen attacks him after he takes his clothes off and uses a water bottle (phallic symbol) to fill the car with oil (like semen). She attacks him and he can no longer drive and be in control of the car. She then takes hold of the car, reclaiming vaginal sexual agency and destroying his phallic control of it.
I think you're over-thinking things. Not everything is a metaphor

I listen to a lot of true crime podcasts, and one of the things that always frustrates me is how often its said of the victim "They were always smiling", "they never had a bad word to say about anybody"....it makes me wonder how often crimes against people who aren't seemingly perfect get followed up on. look at it like this - a lot of those people are related to the victim and for them, it might be difficult to go and think back to their loved ones' lives so they focus on the positives and maybe ONLY the positives

it’s confusing too me cuz he starts as kinda a sad loser then turns into an abusive and violent person to rape her, then in the next scene he’s the first one to scold the main guy for pushing her off a cliff and the first one who suggests they show her mercy and bring her too the hospital. Then later he’s actively trying to kill her and trying to run her down with a truck like dam talk about mood swings.

This is not a ripoff. They are both rape revenge films and there is just so much variation you can have in a "women get raped; rapists get killed" story.
I Spit on Your Grave on it's own can be considered a Last House on the Left ripoff (just compare the characters of Junior and Matthews).
Revenge varies much more within the same plotline, from the previous relationships with the abusers to the morals of the film (it's arguable that Matthews is portrayed on an almost sympathetic way even though he is a rapist nonetheless. Here, Dimitri was killed as mercilessly as the others for turning a blind eye to the event).
The rape scene was incredibly difficult to watch but it made it so liberating to watch them all be murdered- and amazing commentary by James! Love the video
I was very skeptical about this kill count but I’m glad that I watched it. I was sexually assaulted when I was 18 and when I went to the police and they found out who he was, they did everything to try and discredit me and what happened. They even told me straight to my face, “That boy has a lot to lose in this situation. You need to really take that into consideration before trying to make a report.” Seeing this was therapeutic in a way and seeing the stories of other sexual assault survivors on this post made me feel less alone. Thanks for doing this James.
Finally watched Train to Busan last night because I felt bad about just watching the Kill Count and not the movie, and OH MY GOD I cried three separate times even though I knew what was going to happen. One of the most beautiful and impactful movies I've ever seen. Anyway, definitely listen to James and watch both the movie and the kill count (preferably in that order) because they both provide different things and should be used in conjunction with one another.

Just FYI: the Russian film "Viy" (pronounced as "vey") is about witchery and devilry and is based on a novel written in 19 century. But I guess with that specific setting and cinematic capability of Soviet Unioin the 60s the film really is weird for you guys. Personally we were terrified to watch it as kids.

I like how Jen isn't a "perfect victim". Jen is clearly a shitty person, but that doesn't mean that if a victim isn't perfect, their experience is any less than someone who is (whatever a perfect victim is supposed to be by society's standard).

One of my favorite aspects is that the movie doesn't cover up Jen as the movie goes on and keeps showing her body as is like it's saying that, no matter what you've been through or the pain and trauma you've experienced, your body is still yours and no one can take that away from you or ever make you worthless. Also major props to James' in his analysis about how, no matter who the person is and how they choose to present their sexuality, that is their choice and no one has the right to take that away.
I've always been super squeamish with exploitation films or films with heavy gore, but oh my god I love this movie so much. It's so refreshing to have this kind of subject covered by such a talented female director and I adore Jen as a protagonist becoming the hunter against all odds.
If you like this movie but want a little less gore and a little more psychological point, I recommend promising young woman! It’s a super good movie about a girl who’s friend took her own life after she was assaulted at a party and never got justice and her friend goes around, not killing men, but just pretending she’s drunk the confronting them and making them face what they did when they try something. It’s suuuuper good and the actors are all amazing :)

I usually have a tough time with any SA genres like this one but the way you covered it made it much easier to get through- props to the movie's team it seems really well done even if it's not my cup of tea and I'd never be comfortable watching it personally.

Getting blamed by a someone you love (or in her case had some level of attraction to since she was there for their affair in the first place), feels like a literal punch to the gut and stab in the heart; that's how I see his death as all three had methaphores as cause of death or leading up to their demise, for how they wronged her.

Also, in terms of these rape revenge flicks, the only one I'd consider competent (aside from this) is the Last House on the Left remake from 2009. Namely because it takes itself seriously whereas the original is not a tonally consistent or even remotely competent film. I would also say that the parents (played by Tony Goldwyn and Monica Potter) are possibly the best I've seen in a horror movie. They don't outright jump into revenge and instead take more precaution with the situation. I can't explain much else here, so give it a watch if you want.

This movie is personal to me, I am a man, but I have experienced that sort of pain. And it felt so satisfying to see those disgusting slimy bastards die. I wasn't validated nor given revenge or justice since the man that did it got away with it, this movie is a breath of fresh air even tho its a woman's story. She deserved that win no matter who she is.

I love when Dead Meat covers a new type of genre on the Kill Count, and I adore how much care James took with the topic and themes of this movie.
Even though Jen isn’t a perfect person, it’s great that she doesn’t become a stagnant caricature that works to defend her lifestyle before she is assaulted. And the way that she uses her intelligence in order to completely morph into a whole new person is astounding and awesome.
Never expected James to cover this type of film on the Kill Count with *Spoiler* so few kills. But I do like the film and think more publicity for it is great nonetheless. Plus the it must be nice to not spend hours counting background bodies.

One of the things I really appreciate in this film is how the sexual assault isn't really shown. It's really common in the rape revenge genre for the assault to be shown in graphic detail. In I Spit On Your Grave, it's over half an hour long! A full third of the movie is a woman being degraded, abused, naked and bleeding and suffering, and it's all shot in well lit, well focused, even pornographic detail. There seems to be an underlying idea that the audience won't empathise with a woman unless they actually see her being broken, and it's treated as something almost erotic. In this one, it's much more a case of, "you know what happened, look how upset she is, trust us, it was awful." The film demands you empathise with Jen just because you should. It's a really refreshing difference.
One of the best kill counts I’ve seen to date, I love how it’s a really buffed out film analysis (with some kills sprinkled in)
I’m not really a fan of this sorta sub genre in horror movies, but as a survivor of SA this movie hit home in a good way as it was so fucking satisfying to see Jen get her, well revenge on her abusers.

As weird as it sounds, watching movies like this helped me cope and process SA trauma I went through and it made me feel less like a pathetic victim and more like I could if I could survive it I was more powerful than I realized.

Seriously one of the more underrated movies I've seen in the past few years. I checked it out in like 2018 and absolutely loved it - for as many as I watch, this thing (and Matilda Lutz's performance) REALLY stuck with me. I'm gonna have to rewatch it next month for sure.
It never really felt like a horror movie to me tbh, but I'm curious to see if it does on rewatch (the glass shard in the foot scene is also one of the few things in recent memory that's made me physically cringe. Just that, the stomp scene in Brawl in Cell Block 99 and a few others)
the symbolism in this movie is just wonderful. seriously it’s so well put together
many rape-revenge films fall under the exploitation film category, "I Spit on your Grave" and "Last House on the Left" being key examples. they can be really uncomfortable to watch for victims of sexual violence, but other victims (such as myself) find them very empowering. especially when its the victim avenging herself, rather than someone doing it for her. I can totally understand why some people wouldn't like this type of film, though. I enjoy extreme cinema but sometimes its very uncomfortable.

The only movies I have seen in this type of genre was "I spit on your Grave" the OG, the remake and the sequel. Like...7 years ago? It's...like the kills are very well done, especially the remake, they are over the top but the rape in every movie is so uncomfortable. Every single one of them the rape is such a long procedure, you want it to be over quickly but it keeps going. I believe it was 30 minutes, from an 1 hour 50 minute movie in the remake. The sequel of the remake also adds kidnapping and multiple days of rape...I can fully relate when James says "Not the type of thing I normally want to watch" cause I pretty much stayed away from it after those movies.
God that movie made me sick, but I felt so satisfied watching her get the revenge in that movie, the remake I think it was.

there's a reason why rape revenge films also fall under the exploitation genre, not just for the brutal acts of violence that ensue but because of rape scenes itself, which some people (horrifyingly) want to see
The thing is about the rape scenes is to put you in the victim's perspective. It's not suppose to be comfortable, it's not suppose to be quick. The rape itself can feel like it takes hours and gets diaorentating especially if you're passed out or knocked out. At that point you're questioning if it's been days or even longer. You can sympathise with a victim, but when the scene is drug out, really thrown into the depths of "how much longer is this going to go on", can one seriously emapthise with someone who has been in that situation.

I absolutely loved this movie. I find that shudder is my go to when I watch most movies. My fav Christmas movie, A Christmas Horror Story, is on there. I rewatched Deathgasm the other day and that’s another really good one. Then there’s Southbound, Terrified (freaked me out so much), Color Out of Space, and a lil gem called Frakenhooker.
