  • Mark spills oil on his cement patio and figures he'll try some heat to see if the oil will burn off. So if you want to remove an oil stain on cement - head over to Lowe's and get yourself a weed torch

This will work on pavers or brick much better than it will on regular concrete because pavers and brick are pressed and fired with a high temp. Regular concrete is poured, floated and troweled so regular concrete cannot take the heat that a paver or brick can. That's why concrete will pop or spall when a significant amount of heat is applied.

Genius! I used the weed burner trick after trying several other attempts. Thank you for posting this! I used this on the pavers on my driveway (very worth the expenditure of 10# of propane - it was a 6' x 5' stain. Plenty enough left over to cook whatever you want...). As you know, oil stains concrete and pavers. Once the initial drying takes place, cat litter is useless. Dawn liquid did touch it. Baking soda and Coke didn't touch it (it was transmission fluid). GooGone Concrete Cleaner did OK on part of it, but it has to sit for 24 hours. I was amazed at how the stains just disappeared. I used a big weed burner, so care was taken not to over heat the pavers. Anyway, thank you for posting this!

  • @matrixate
    @matrixate Před 3 lety +15

The reason why this works is because REGULAR motor oil burns at 400+ degrees F. However, concrete undergoes a chemical change that yields calcium oxide at about 800+ degrees. Since the flame can get to twice that heat 1800-2000F, there can be a slight visual discoloration...and that IS a permanent color change on the heated spots. If you're ok with that, then go for it. Now, IF the oil is SYNTHETIC...then forget it. You need much higher temperature to burn it and you'll damage the concrete. In both cases, you risk cracking the concrete with extreme heat ONLY on a section. So, one would have to take into account the thickness of the slab and the proportion of the area being heated. If it's synthetic oil, use a cleaner. In both cases, consider a cleaner.

Home AC unit removed & replaced Fri. 09/07/18 When I came home from work the installer left a rather large trail of compressor oil across my sidewalk and twenty feet across my brick paver patio. Tried the power wash and various solvent methods. Waste of time as the results were very minimal to say the least. Went to you tube and found Marks method. Went to Harbor Freight and bought a torch. Came home, hooked it to a 20 lb tank and proceeded to burn the damn hose down!!! Just kidding! This method worked great. Stain are gone and wife is happy! Thank you Mark

Thanks for this. It removed the oil stink on my driveway with a kitchen torch. Took me half hour because it was a small torch but it worked like magic. I tried different cleaners before and none of them worked. I find that if I burn a spot for too long though, it leaves a dark mark. But if I don’t burn it long enough, the oil doesn’t entirely go away. So, it’s a bit of a balancing act and require practice and lots of patience. But overall, it worked great!

You came up with a great idea, I've tried brake cleaner to help it evaporate faster. It helped a little but, your idea really works. Like you said, be careful. If you hear it too much in one area it's going to pop the concrete. Just like welding or using a cutting torch over concrete. I'm also going to try my heat gun. It might be a little more user friendly for people that don't realize how hot torches get. The heat gun might be a little slower but, it shouldn't make the concrete explode. Thanks for the solution.

Those fully saturated stains that have been on a while sometimes come right back".. I dab gasoline on the stain first to help bring the oil to the top. Then I use a methane torch (Yellow bottle for a Bernzomatic torch) and I heat the stain until it disappears. Methane burns hotter than propane so wear safety glasses. If the stones get too hot they will pop.

I need to do this in my garage. 30 years of cars being parked, people changing their oil, transmission fluids and radiator fluids all spilled and got into the concrete. Sure they wipe it off, but i can smell the petroleum everytime i am in the garage. Since covid, the idea of garage changed to a studio for me and I spend a lot of time in there. So now its time to vaporize those oils. Need to ventilate with a big window fan and have the garage door open as much as possible when i start the job. I did a small sample and noticed some red/brown residiue on the concrete. Will try to sand that off, or just go much faster. I hate doing this, but those VOC's from all the car fluids need to be gone.

In your situation, try to slowly and evenly heat the brick from a little further away than the video and then move in. This ‘should ‘ minimize the possibility of a thermal crack. If you are really concerned, put liquid Landry detergent on it and scrub it in and then oil absorbent on top from the auto parts store and grind it in with your shoe and ‘leave it’ for a week. Should come right off with the next rain or you can hose it off. I cleaned my concrete drive with this method and it worked great.

Hi Bud! Had an unfortunate accident with a deep fryer on my back patio. Peanut oil. Wild animals knocked it over and now theres a huge mess. Your method looked promising, so I got a torch and tried it. I could smell the oil burning and it smoked. Now theres burn residue. Thankfully I only did a small spot. I dont know If i was doing something wrong. Any suggestions?

Try less heat - you just want to boil it off not turn it into carbon so less heat might work

Would this work with a heat gun you think? Or is it specifically propane torch that will do this? A heat gun gives off similar levels of heat but cleaner because theres no gas involved....
Would love to know your thoughts. Ty

@@weedsmoke2794 The oil fumes kept putting out the flame and the torch didnt want to ignite back up, but it was catching fire though. it felt hella dangerous so i gave up and threw cat litter over it.

    Sir,
This video was extremely helpful and recently I had a paver driveway installed. I accidentally spilt vegetable oil on it and used the method you showed with the propane torch to get it out. It did remove a lot of the oil however, whenever the driveway gets wet after rain that area stays wet for at least two days. Could the propane have damaged the new Cambridge pavers. Would you know of any suggestions to remedy this matter? ThAnks again for the insightful video and I hope to hear back from you soon.

You might could put some water sealant on those areas to restore their former function. Repeat about once a year or as needed.

Tried it on 2 day old 5w40 Liqui Molly motor oil and I can’t see a difference and it did not go away. But I did try to use Greased Lightning first, which loosened the color a ton and may have affected the result with a variable.
I’ll keep trying tho and use up the $5 bottle, and then return the $65 cane (sheesh).
