  • Jurassic Park 3 is often ranked as the worst film of the original trilogy, and some even say it’s the worst in the entire franchise. And up until a few years ago I believed the same thing, but after seeing Jurassic World: Dominion and being disappointed by almost everything about it, I rewatched Jurassic Park 3 and came to realize it’s actually better than we thought.

3 had the most suspense and terror than any of the previous or future installments. The spinosaurus was scary. The setting was eery and hopeless. I loved it. The phone ringing in the belly scene is kinda dumb when you think about it but super terrifying if you can look past the obvious holes in logic. Aswell as the pterodactyls being terrifying

I *never* hated “Jurassic Park 3.” I’ve always enjoyed it _equally_ as much as the first two original films. I discuss why in my own review on my channel.
On that note, “Dominion” *isn’t* a 100% terrible film IMHO, but I have come to recently recognize where and how it could’ve been improved upon. Fingers crossed (🤞) that this Extended Cut I’m hearing about will remedy at least some of its issues.

Just watched Dominion. It was awful coming from someone who actually read the book. I dunno if the writers just read spark notes or just hate the actual story but nearly everything was bad. The entire ending message they pushed is completely counter to Ian Malcolm's opinions/explanations at the end of the first book. Not to mention it continues the whole Lockhart girl that they conjured out of thin air for Fallen Kingdom that blowed hard.
From a purely moviegoer point of view it fails as well. The book is largely based on the science and technology balanced out with the actually dinosaurs themselves. The first movie cuts short much of the sci-fi and focuses on the dinosaurs. Fallen Kingdom and Dominion however don't even focus on the dinosaurs but use them as a backdrop to explore a human struggle about a character created from thin air that is completely unnecessary as well as making Biosyn some super villain-esque company with mercenaries and near Moon Raker cult vibes entwined into another pointless and forgettable plot choice. They dropped a lot of dinosaurs in the movie like candy but didn't actually flesh them out or focus on them.
Dominion was a bad retelling of the first Jurassic Park loaded with poorly done nostalgia scenes, pointless and forgettable new characters, and taking away all the wrong messages from the original story line. Hollywood's absolute inability to create new interesting franchises just leads to them utterly decimating older beloved franchises.

I always loved it. Could be because of nostalgia, after all, the original came out one year before I was born, and I was too young to watch the second one in theaters, so 3 was my first true "jurassic" experience in the cinema. I'll always remember how I came out of the cinema being absolutely blown away by the dinosaur action. I pretty much got all the toys and watching 3 was what got me to watch the VHS tapes of the first two movies over and over as a kid. Of course, I watched 3 on tape as well when I got it. I still keep those three tapes and treasure them. Because all these 3 movies were my childhood and I love them the same.
Same with the infamous Spinosaurus vs T Rex debate. I'm a rare guy in the sense that I simply love both. Not even as a kid, I couldn't pick who was "better". I made both action figures fight each other and I had a blast, there was never a winner.
So I don't know, I get why the first one is regarded as the best but I always thought its two sequels never get the love that they should. They've never been much worse in my eyes. They have the good dinosaur action and horror of the first film. And that's why we go see a Jurassic movie to begin with.
I don't think that nostalgia blinds me either. I also think the first Jurassic World movie is a pretty solid film. But Fallen Kingdom and Dominion are truly worse and fall behind the 4 previous ones.
Anyway I'm happy The Lost World and 3 are getting some love, after years of defending them from my part.

It was my second favorite film of the series before the JW trilogy and certainly afterwards now. You hit the nail on the head pretty much out of the gate for me: if I'm going to sit down for a subpar sequel, let's get to it with that shortest run time of the franchise. Plus some great thriller sequences in the aviary, the river barge attack, a brief hadrosaur stampede (my favorite group of dinos), and the most interesting raptors of the series. If the Kirbys had left their ugh-inducing marital issues at home, I would go out on a limb and even say it's a decently solid sequel considering its troubled production history.

JPIII was certainly to me the least-good of the original trilogy. I'd hesitant to say it was plain bad or awful, that goes to Fallen Kingdom and Dominion, but at least here, there was danger, the Spino was a threat, and despite how dumb it was to get Grant to go back to the Islands, least there was a play between Billy/Eric and him to make it seem interesting. I do love the Dino-Saur jump Billy does to save Eric. It's got Joe Johnston too, not a bad hand, but the script was the real issue.

Always thought this movie was was way too unfairly criticized. Everytime it's on I almost always watch it!
As for everyone hating on the T-Rex getting killed off so quickly....get over it. It was the third movie, they had to do something different or JP3 would have REALLY been boring and stale with the T-Rex being the main "villian" again. The Spinosaurus killing it in JP3 doesn't take away it's mystique or status. I personally though the T-Rex/Spinosaurus battle was freaking cool and awesome seeing two apex predators battle it out. Also personally, the Spino got lucky the the T-Rex miscalculated an attack, if you go back and watch it, the T-Rex was actually at first dominating the Spino. But the Spino asserted it's dominance (long arms made the Spino much more dangerous), and made quick work of the T-Rex.
So, yes, I enjoyed the movie...lol. And yes, comparing it to the latter two Jurassic World movies, it's way better than either of those.

The airstrip and bird cage set pieces are great. The others suffer from an over reliance on cgi. It's interesting to think what Spielberg might've done if he had a crack at it. That's not a dig at Joe Johnston btw. If the studio gave the project more time to plan, I think he could've made something truly wonderful.

What's funny is there is this trend lately where these people have hated on movies for years, but now that even newer releases are around for them to direct their hatred towards, it's "oh, well I guess x movie wasn't so bad." The most prominent example I can think of is the star wars prequels, but it's funny that the JP sequels are falling into this too.
Here's my opinion on the third movie, which remains unchanged after the JW series. It was enjoyable. By no means a cinematic masterpiece, but the characters were fun, despite not seeming totally real. Paul and Amanda Kirby don't exactly strike me as the type of people who would violate international laws, kidnap a guide, and hire some mercenaries to go in person on a foot mission to rescue their son once the proper channels failed. But still, there were some pretty hilarious moments, especially with Paul. I actually liked Billy, and was okay with him living after his apparent sacrifice. I just wish it went into "how". Yes, the ending felt extremely rushed.
But overall, I think if I had to describe this movie in two words, it would be "untapped potential". From the moment they discovered the Spino wasn't on Ingen's list, I was hoping the movie would go more in depth on what exactly ingen was doing. Grant should have noticed the spino was behaving abnormally for a predator, rather than just protecting a territory and hunting, it was extremely aggressive, taking unnecessary risks, actively pursuing the party outside of its territory, despite it being a lot of effort for very little reward. Maybe they find something in the compound, research data, etc. that if delivered, could be used to open up investigations into ingen. Idk. I would have certainly gone a different direction than "military dinosaurs" but I don't know exactly what, unless we really emphasize the mad scientist in Dr. Wu.

This movie is my second favorite movie out of both Jurassic trilogies.
I don’t care what people say about it, the movie was entertaining from start to finish, gave us the Spinosaurus, brought back Alan Grant, and was full of suspenseful action scenes.
And I for one think that the short runtime helps this movie rather than hindering it, because the time is well used to create the sense of urgency that just pulls you into the movie

  • @AMPATTI07

Ironically, the main reason it's better isn't mentioned. What makes a good Jurassic Park film and why Spielberg is so good at what he does, is he makes the characters feel real. The feel like realistic people. Chris Pratt is a great actor but he's directed to almost be a super-human like hero in the World trilogy. The characters don't feel grounded. In the original film, the characters naturally come off as regular humans which makes the feeling of Dinosaurs in our world, realistic and scary. The Wolrd films felt more like Marvel meets Dinos and lost that real world realisticness.

I never thought it was a bad film, and I do find the Spinosaurus to be a pretty good rig, but I still think they could've given the mascot T-rex better respect than just giving it only one scene in the whole 90 minute movie which it was killed off like it didn't amount to a thing. It's kind of like they threw it in a dumpster, poured gasoline all over it, and lit a match.

Honestly. I seen JP3 in Theaters before. And it’s a Solid Mini Adventure with the High Stakes being put on the Onset of Survival for all the Characters. You honestly didn’t know which of the main cast Members was going to die after the Pterodactyl Attack and Billy basically getting Pecked to Death while going down a River!
What made it even more crazy was the fact that there were Raptors and a Spino chasing them, adding an extra layer of danger!
This film, for all its flaws, was well handled. But I do think it’s time to Spin-off from this Series and move away from its main cast. We need more Characters like the Kurbies who are Completely out of their Depth when dealing with Dinosaurs! It only makes sense.

Well, the Star Wars sequel trilogy has led many people to reevaluate the quality of the prequels, which have been maligned for many years, so perhaps a silver lining can be gleaned from the dark cloud of a terrible recent entry in a franchise. I've grown to appreciate Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, after the later Terminator movies were each more disappointing than the last. And I've even seen some praise for Predator 2 in recent years, after a number of false starts in that series, as well.
