Something I always noticed was that when we're first introduced to Dr. Wu, hes using the eraser side of a pencil on the paper and clipboard he's holding. In his first shot, Dr. Wu is confronting a mistake he'd made. A small one, just writing something down wrong, but I saw it as foreshadowing that mistakes were being made before the audience first sees Wu and the lab. 🤔🤨

@@joelara3750You're no fun. Movies foreshadow moments like this small and large all the time. Yes it's just acting, but acting includes foreshadowing as well.
You really think actors aren't capable of doing stuff like this? They may not be perfect but they know what their doing, actors often research their role and the source media as well. They aren't that stupid. Sure some of them aren't exactly intelligent, but most of them have at least a basic understanding of the film they are in.

The one bit of trivia that I love about this movie is the homage to The Goonies with Nedry’s clothes. First he’s dressed like Chunk, then Mouth, and in the final scene, he’s dressed like Mikey

Voss just blew my mind with that seatbelt observation foreshadowing the female dinosaurs “finding a way “. That has never occurred to me ever! Thanks Voss!! And yes I was lucky enough to see this in the theater as a kid. I can actually still remember our seats. It’s one of those vivid childhood memories I still have not forgotten

uEver realize that Hammond's was kinda deadbeat at absolutely everything? Popping up outta nowhere when no one invited him or completely disappearing & useless at the time where his presence is needed the most! In spite of his age & handicap, he still is motivated by the thrill making babies but out the door fast for a biped w/ a cane.
However, there were 2 things he wasnt lying about:
1- It's still a "flee" circus. It's all illusion
2 - Kids were unfortunately actually were the "target" audience.

Him tying the two together shows his practical nature and survivorability setting up his character as a capable outdoorsman instead of some science nerd. This shot happens AFTER the geologist has the line telling US that Grant is like HIM. These lines are for a REASON. Also remember Ford was envisioned for this part AKA Indiana Jones who did things like that in the movies for decades.
Grant survives the dinosaurs in the park while handicapped by 2 kids, 1 of them being injured.
All this stuff sets the viewer up for suspension of disbelief. Had NOTHING to do with the dinosaurs. It was decades old character development/exposition
Film was the biggest most expensive unheard of film an all about dinosaurs ! Yeah this 41yr man was a kid in the seat the theater for the first 3 films. ❤

This film was a perfect marriage of practical and cg effects and it was the first time they ever did anything like it. 30 years later there's still something to learn from it
The opening t-rex scene still seems more realistic than any of the following films made
This and T2 are still some of the best CGI in movie history.

Jurassic Park will always have a special place in my heart because this is the first movie I remember watching and getting into dinosaurs
I was ALWAYS interested and fascinated about Dinos… i was 10 when i saw it at Theaters.
This “New” Jurassic Park is entertaining but nothing like the 1st movie.
This was only the second film I saw at the cinema (1st was The Little Mermaid) and I was 6 at the time. I was already dinosaur crazy but I remember before she bought the tickets, she asked a staff member if it was scary and stuff. She came to me and said with a concerned voice, "The man told me that you might find it scary because you see people getting eaten by dinosaurs. Are you sure that you still want to watch it?" Absolutely! I want to see it more now you told me that! I had seen various dinosaur media before, but I remember when we first see the brachiosaurus and (together with every other dinosaur seen in the film) as far as I was concerned, I had just seen real dinosaurs! I'll never forget what that felt like!🤯👌🤧🦕😍💯🤤
I will NEVER get sick of watching Jurassic Park! Gives me great memories as a child and as a Kiwi I love how the main character was a New Zealander!
Growing up I kinda thought that this was just a dinosaur movie thriller, but now I see that it is so so much more as it tangles with frightening heavy concepts paired with phenomenal acting! Thank you Erik!

This movie is phenomenal. The fact that they hide the full sheer size of the T-Rex until they kill many people, makes me appreciate the movie more, and more, and more the mor times i watch it. Lol. I love this movie.

Great movie, even better book. So much gore was missing. Not to mention the kids seemingly swapped rolls.
@@Laidback_616 Lex is much younger in the book, but Tim is still the dinosaur enthusiast, as well as a computer nerd. So they didn't as much swap the roles as separate Tim into the two sides to give Lex, as an older kid, something to do.
This movie forever captured my youth. I was 13-years-old when it hit theaters and I'm 13-years-old again each and everytime I watch Jurassic Park. This was the first movie released in DTS 5.1 and I can still remember the first time the T-Rex roared the whole theater shook! I know that's standard for movies now but not back in 1993.
We are the same age- I completely feel that same sentiment EVERY time I watch this movie😃😃😃 I love sharing it with my son over and over again too!
I love Jurassic Park. It had a big effect on me. Besides getting the realistic looking toys, McDonald's collector cups, and the SNES game, it made me want to learn more about science. I started watching PBS documentaries, going to the library, paying attention in science class. I also thought about the movie a lot.

I don't know why but when the video talked about the final triumphant shot of the Rex bellowing with the banner falling in front of it, I teared up. Awesome video, guys. Thanks for reminding me once again why this is my favorite movie ever ❤️

This is my favorite movie of all time. You did an amazing deep dive. The one piece of trivia that I could never forget is when the T-Rex is attacking them in the car, and the top glass falls on them, the screams are real. The T-Rex anamatronic was malfunctioning because of the water. The head fell into the glass, and in uncut scenes you can even hear the entire crew scream because that wasn't supposed to happen. Spielberg loved how it turned out and decided it would make it more real to leave the real screams in.
Noticed one mistake which is that Dennis Muren created the test animation, it was in fact Steve “Spaz” Williams and Mark Dippé who created the test shots that convinced them to go with CGI (you can actually see Steve Williams sit behind the PC 8:44 showing Dennis the shots) for anyone interested in that there is a documentary called Jurassic Punk
Came to the comments to say the exact same thing and predicted someone had beat me to it. Steve’s story is a fascinating and sad one. This misattribution of credit to Dennis Muren, as Erik gives it here, is one of the primary plot points of his documentary and led to his ultimate dismissal from ILM. I’d recommend “Jurassic Punk” to everyone.

I remember first seeing an action figure of Alan Grant in the store, had no idea where it was from, but was into dinosaurs. Then when the movie finally came out, I must've watched it about 10 times in theaters with my dad, only film I ever saw more than once in theater. Also before the film came out, I remember a news interview and they showed a full scene with the Gallimimus running as their promo clip.
There's always something new to catch, and even with knowing how it's all done, it doesn't lose it's magic touch. They also did a promo tour back then, I remember the Ft. Worth Science Museum had a mock dinosaur dig for kids, displayed props from the film, dinosaur trivia and educational videos playing. Everything about the film production and design, even the marketing, they spared no expense.
I was obsessed and had all the toys, and JP Compound, haha. The Lost World was great too. Enjoyed the newer films too, got to meet Director J.A. Bayona (Penny Dreadful) before he worked on Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom. Though it's not as great as the others, it has a lot of those classic horror film references.
A lot of the cautionary commentary on technology can easily apply to AI nowadays (in which robotics is linked) and also showcased in Westworld.

I remember seeing this movie in its original theatrical run. That jumpscare with the raptor in the power substation where it breaks through between the wires was absolutely terrifying. The entire audience practically jumped a whole foot out of their seats.
I literally screamed at that part. I jump easy and it got me good but to be fair I was a 6th gradee

Even after all the videos youve done im still amazed at how good these deep dives are. Thanks for giving me a reason to rewatch this its been awhile. Its almost mind blowing how good this movie still holds up.
Isn’t it so impressive that, in making Hammond human, with all the different aspects of him, Spielberg and Attenborough were able to deliver us such an incredibly interesting character, with depth, complexity, parts of which you relate to, parts you don’t - now compare that to the black-and-white “baddie” characters in other movies who you just feel one emotion towards, e.g. disdain, distrust, or hate etc. The brilliance of this movie lies in these layered characters; even the protagonists have dark sides, e.g. Grant disliking children and scaring them with dinosaur fossils.
This video brought the power of this film rushing back to me. I grew up playing with plastic dinosaur toys. I walked in the footprints of dinosaurs in Glen Rose, Texas. This passion for these fantastical, and yet real, creatures drove me to my career teaching biology. I had heard rumors of Crichton’s new book about bringing them back. I devoured that idea as I read that book. And for a few hours, in my early 20s, I actually saw dinosaurs come alive on the big screen thanks to the magic of this creation. The power is still there, and this movie will always have a special place in my heart.
You know what was always funny to me? The scene where they all see the brachiosaur for the first time, and their mouths are just wide open and they are in shock and awe of it. And at the same time, the guy who drove them there is like, "it's just a goddamn dinosaur. I see him everyday." His complete lack of interest in them really makes me laugh

I remember seeing this in the theater and being almost physically hurt by the t-rex roar, then a few minutes later an usher came in and rushed out real quick and then the volume noticeably dipped by like 15%. So I always felt like they set me up for an extra-powerful roar which I now appreciate but as a kid really had me shook
How are you going to credit Dennis Muren with the vfx and not even bring up Spaz Williams? The literal person who put an unbelievable amount of hard work into this film and revolutionized vfx. Williams will be forgotten in time and it’s just sad.
When they are eating dinner, right after the raptor feeding scene, there is a slide in the background says "Jurassic Tenn...". Which, when I saw it in the theater as a kid in Tennessee, I was hyped our state got a shout out. As an adult I realize it's more likely "Jurassic Tennis". Which does sound awesome.
I remember watching this for the first time a decade ago when it was on Netflix.
I was in shock at damn good the movie looked. Not just the dinosaurs, but the characters were quite entertaining, especially Jeff Goldblum.

This deep dive makes me so happy. This is a favorite movie that my 5yr old and I share. As a child when this movie came out, this movie gave me horrible nightmares. I’m so glad I overcame that fear so I can watch this with my son now.

Yay! You mentioned the Irix 3d file system! When I first saw this movie, her line "I know this, this is Unix!" pissed me off so much, it looked nothing like any Unix interface I had ever seen. But years later the internet proved that -I- was wrong. It was pretty obscure though, those SGI Irix boxes were probably pricier than $20k, so not a lot of them lying around.
Spielberg really is a national treasure. Looking at his filmography is amazing and he deserved to win best director for many more than one of these. He is 76 years old and I hope they honor him and his work soon.
One of my University of Utah Geology professors recommended reading the book, before it was turned into a movie. I loved the book and then the movie. One of my professors (at CEU) talked to Spielberg during production about the velociraptors because he was digging up one at the time in central Utah. My professor said he told them the dinosaurs they found were around a specific size (i think it was 6 feet) , but Spielberg said they were going to make them bigger for they movie. A few months after their conversation my professor's team found a velociraptor fossil the size the movie was going to make the movie velociraptors. 😁 Great movie and book.
That is a true story! Velociraptors are very small. I think 2-3 feet tall. But your professors found a new kind of raptor, the Utahraptor, which was 6-8 ft and exactly the size that Spielberg needed to justify his change.
I saw JP as a young adult who was totally into VFx and dinos So it was the perfect film for me. But then I went to a presentation by the ILM team at the Palace of Fine Arts in SF discussing how they made J.P. They briefly chronicled the evolution of digital effects with citing The Abyss” as one of their latest works featuring living animation.
I got to hear the story of the how them convinced the producers/directors to go with digital dinosaurs for most of the big action scenes. I saw the videos of the galli run and of the “light footed” T-Rex, how they learned to give the dino weight and how they received motion capture info “beamed across the bay” from Tippet’s studio in the East Bay. This made me a lifelong fan of the franchise. THANK YOU, Eric for giving this film the love and attention it deserves!
Just rewatched the whole series a few days ago with my girl. This will be a good watch for sure!

Love the ending, the swell of the music and the heel turn of the TRex just epic!!!
Damn, now that I think of, this movie really was a metaphor of that moment in history that unleashed the wonders and concerns of technology in cinema as much as it was for other fields. It's a big rarity, that such a film had so much of meaning. Spielberg really became the John Hammond of cinema.

It makes sense to have the ramped area in the Rex paddock. Otherwise the car passengers wouldn't ever be able to see her. The feeding platform would bring her next to the fence for viewing.
The thing I most remember about seeing this movie is how was actually scared for breaf moment that the T-Rex just might eat those kids during the car sequence. It was so intense and frightening. I was like; "nooo, they're not gonna do that. But OH MY GAHH ARE THEY GONNA DO THAT?!!!" It will be in my memory forever 😂
I might be wrong here, but i always assumed the banana peel sound effect in Nedry's death scene was the truck's winch being pulled sharply because hes holding it as he falls.
That scene in the book is sheer terror

It's my favourite movie of all time.
A few things not included in this video, the T-Rex animatronic lost a tooth. The glass wasn't supposed to break in half, and its mouth hit it, breaking one of the teeth off. A small detail that carried on to her other appearances in the series.
And a story I never see anyone talk about, there was a crew member who got stuck in and could have potentially died in the T-Rex animatronic. The story is on the Stan Winston school website.
Much of the cast and crew could have died from the major hurricane that hit the island, seen it mentioned in a few interviews

I have been a youtuber and content provider for 10 years but this channel is hands down my favourite! Amazing content!
When kids turn 5 they pick either space, dinos, sharks, and history and base their childhood personality around it. That is why Star Wars, Jurassic park, jaws, and Indiana jones are regarded as highly as they are. And they are perfectly rated
Dennis Muren didn't do the computer graphics demo that sold it to Speilberg, Steve 'Spaz' Williams rigged and animated it over many months (even though he had been told not to by Muren) and left the animation running on a screen so Kathleen Kennedy would see it when coming in for a meeting. She did and the rest is history. Muren is a genius, but not in this case!
This. I was a little disappointed with the misplaced credit.
I like to think Hammond and Co went with "Jurassic Park" even though most of their dinosaurs are from the Cretaceous, simply because they didn't really know what they were doing!
The same with Nedry encountering the dilophosaurus and not having the slightest idea of how dangerous it actually is
That... is not a balanced comparison. Dennis Nedry is, in every sense of the term, a "Desk Jockey" and, thus, is never expected to have that type of knowledge. He's a Computer Programmer and, supposedly, a Security Specialist. He is not an Archaeologist or a Biologist. Nor is he John Hammond, the Owner and CEO of Ingen and the man with the vision. As the guy in charge and the guy who came up with the idea in the first place, it's kinda Hammond's job to know the difference between "Jurassic" and "Cretaceous." I could actually see him knowing the difference and choosing "Jurassic" over "Cretaceous" because "Jurassic" is more marketable. I could also see him believing that knowing something like that is beneath his notice and so he didn't care enough to learn. After all, he represents "Big Corpo" aka "Money Above All Else."

The "clever girl" scene is a reference to Total Recall. The raptor he's aiming at distracts him while the other attacks from the side. In Total Recall his "wife" distracts him with conversation in the apartment while the attack team comes up from the back, he sees them in the camera and says "clever girl".
I was lucky enough to watch this on opening night in the theaters as a kid. I wish I could fully articulate what it was like, being pinned into my seat by the sheer _sound_ of the T-Rex's roar, or how CGI seemed like magic. 1993 doesn't feel that long ago...

This came out on my 13th birthday and my aunt taken me and my cousin to the theatre to watch this. Mom unfortunately was babysitting at the time so a few days later her and I went to see it.
This is one of my top 5 favourite movies, no question. I even have a tattoo of Muldoon. I'm so glad you addressed the paddock into cliff thing haha. This is a great video :D
Kinda surprised you skipped the part where the TRex comes through the sunroof at Tim and Lex… the robotic Dino slipped and came down through the roof much harder than anyone planned, so prompting real screams of terror from the kids on set. They kept the shot for the film as they’d never be able to replicate the authenticity of their terror.
I was looking for this! Can you imagine how those poor kids felt? "The robotic dinosaur is gonna look at you thru the glass, act scared." And then it comes THRU the glass! No acting required anymore, lol.
I too scrolled to find this comment. You see the plexiglass break a chunk off, and that's what created the true horror.

The 90's had such great movies, T2, Jurrasic Park, Titanic just to name a few. I can remember these like it was yesterday in my younger years!

When I was a kid, I went on a school trip shortly after I saw Jurassic Park. Our class stayed over-night in a big mansion out in the country somewhere. I got in trouble one night and, as punishment, one of the teachers made me sit alone in the dark dining hall, right by the big kitchen which had those big, industrial silver doors, replete with round windows. To my eyes, they looked exactly like those in the kitchen scene in this movie and I remember desperately asking my teacher to sit me somewhere else, but I couldn’t tell her why because I knew I’d sound stupid.
Seeing this in the movies for the first time is something I will never forget.
They got the Velociraptors mixed up with most likely a Deinonicus, but it was still great

i saw Jurassic Park at the drive-in during the summer of 1993. it was insane. i was just a child.... eleven years old. and it rocked my world.
Still one of my all time favorites. I remember going to see this at the dollar theater right before school started that year (yes, I'm old 😉). The raptor jump scare made me scream out loud and truly terrified me.

When you talk about the sick Triceratops, you forget to mention, that in the book, it's actually a sick Stegasaur (yep, I've misspelled it intentionally). Spielberg switched them, because he felt a Tric would be better, as he loves these tri-horned creatures more.
Also Muldoon screaming "shoot her!" not being followed by actually shooting her (the Big One) makes sense. Sure Muldoon gave the order, but the leader raptor is an invaluable asset to the park and if they shot her in the begining, she wouldn't later cause chaos in the kitchen, or wherever she is after the park collapsed and the raptors break free. So they naturally only tease her, not shoot her. Just saying. Yes, we don't see much shooting early on, but it makes sense within the story.
So yea, I, uh, find a way ... outta here myself. Pun totally intended.
except there were gunshots in that scene...so they did try to shoot it... (and might have even shot it since we don't know what raptor that is supposed to be. Just assumed to be "the big one".

This is honestly one of the best movies ever made.
What I love so much about the movies during this time period is that they didn't just rely 100% on CGI. It was a blend of CGI and practical effects and other techniques which when cut back and forth sell the shots.
Today so many films just use CGI and I don't like it. Instead you mix and match CGI with other practical shots so that the viewers can't really tell the difference between the two.

This is perfect timing. I'm reading Michael Crichton's original book right now and it's so cool to figure out what the movie changed and what was left out so on. JP is not only a fenomenal movie, it's a fenomenal adaptation too!
The Lost World book is even better. Completely different from the movie in almost every way.

I have fallen down the movie recap hole. And i just love this channel. The ai voiceover ones ugh, and only explains the movie in general. Every episode is such a deep dive. So many small insignificant details with so much meaning still.

Great dive into one of my all time favorites! The details, subtle and visible, in this film still amaze me, and nothing will ever beat that first reveal of the valley full of dinosaurs to this dinosaur loving child's heart!
This was the 2nd movie I ever saw in the theaters as a kid. I'm remember summer camp 93. My mind was blown after seeing this film. I was scared,thrilled, curious and in love forever there after. I've been thoroughly obsessed ever since. I couldn't wait to share this film with my kids. This film was one of the OG cinematic worlds.❤
2:16 Science teacher here. Dinosaurs did not evolve into birds, birds just are one kind of dinosar. The first birds, of the clade Ornithurae, originated in the early Cretaceous, and had diversified into several different families of birds before the K-T extinction event that saw the end of all of the non-avian dinosaurs, several of which survived the K-T event independently. Like velociraptor, deinonychus (the dinosars in Jurassic Park that were called velociraptors because the name just sounds cooler than deinonycus), and T-Rex, birds are theropod dinosaurs. Birds didn't evolve from dinosaurs, they just are dinosaurs. It'd be like if every mammal on earth went extinct except for the bats. Bats didn't "evolve from mammals", bats are mammals, as different as they are from other mammals like elephats, whales, and us.

We meet Sam Neill's Dr. Grant on a dig in Montana, a little wink and nod to Sam Neill's Vasily Borodin. Borodin was the XO on the Soviet sub Red October, and as he died by assassin's bullet, he said "I would have liked to see Montana."
This was much less of a deep dive than I expected, considering you made a whole new channel for this. If you've ever seen any breakdown or "fun facts" about Jurassic Park than you probably already know everything in this video.
I think it's funny that after the Frog DNA twist and then the messy excuse for Blue's offspring in Dominion, it's not unlikely that dinosaurs could have been capable of parthenogenesis as it's observed in some reptiles and rarely in birds
I've watched tons of vids on JP and the back ground stuff and nobody ever covered the mystery plot hole of the T-rex paddock.. esp that drawing at 18:32. Well done!

I will never get over my mistake as a kid missing this movie in the theaters because when I asked my parents to take me to see this movie, they said I was old enough to go alone and we lived just a walking distance to our local movie theater, but I was just a kid and I wasn't feeling up to be independent. I still relied on my parents to take me. Even my mom gave me money but I declined to go. And that I will never forgive myself. Jurassic Park is one of those FOMO movies that you had to see for the first time on the big screen with those first impact impressions. You don't get the same feeling when you rent it for the first time and watch it on VHS. I didn't rent a copy from Blockbuster, I bought my copy from a video retail store after its release on October 4th, 1994

Speaking of sound design, this was the first DTS movie. They put a ton of thought into the surround sound. It was one of the selling points for my family getting our first home theater setup. Put this movie on a good 5.1, 7.1 system, turn the center channel down, and listen to all the stuff going on in the background.
