    When Marvel had the rights to make Godzilla comics, they introduced a giant robot called Red Ronin. It was built as an anti-Godzilla weapon, but the inventor's young son snuck on board and took control of it, using it to help Godzilla in fights. It was eventually destroyed in battle.

    • @AtomicSnackBar
      @AtomicSnackBar  Před 17 dny

      That's interesting. I never read any of the Marvel comic. The Dark Horse book was the one that was running when I first got into comics, so I'm a bit more familiar with that one. How did Red Ronin look?

      @AtomicSnackBar think of a samurai crossed with raydeen in red and gold. For Marvel's godzilla comic, the mega-monsters 3 part story was great. Plus, it had godzilla vs. s.h.i.e.l.d., the Avengers, and the fantastic four.

    Top 3 favorite 1970s movie robots . . . Huey, Dewey, and Louie, from Douglas Trumbull's "Silent Running" (1972).

    • @AtomicSnackBar
      @AtomicSnackBar  Před 8 měsíci +2

      I have a pretty good knowledge of classic sci-fi I'd say. And I've learned a ton, and forgotten even more, from doing this channel. But I still learn new things all time and quite a bit from viewers. All this time, I had no idea Silent Running was a sci-fi film. I had it completely mixed up with another movie.
      Looking into it, I think I thought it was either Midnight Express or Runaway Train.
      So all that aside, is Silent Running a good movie?

    When I was little, I had King Ding with his operator, Brain. I also had the Ding-a-Ling Skyway, which was a set of toothed blue tracks that you could put together in a straight line and have one of the robots go along it. I also had the construction robot. I wanted Rocky, the one with missiles for arms, but never got him. I still have the construction robot somewhere, and I have a Brain that I found in the trash a few years ago. I don't have any of the power packs that made them move though. Those were always harder to get than the robots themselves.

    Another great list! Nice to see some love for Muffet 2. I was around for the original Battlestar Galactica. The only one in book. It was very exciting to see Star Wars like effects on tv. I don't think people today realize what a big deal that once was. These days with CGI you can have movie quality effects for just a car commercial but in those days there was a difference between what you saw in the movies and tv. And Galactica was awesome. I always liked Muffet 2. Especially the sound effects when he talked. I enjoyed The Black Hole very much. A lot of people seem to out it down but I don't agree. It turned out to be more of a mystery and I think people were expecting it to be more Star Wars. But the robots were great. As I type this I'm looking at a small toy of Vincent sitting on my shelf. I love his face off with Maximillian who I agree is a very intimidating and creepy robot! Starcrash is epic! Yes, often called the Italian Star Wars but I agree it's more Harryhausen. I mean for God's sake it has Caroline Munro in it! Elle with his southern accent is very memorable. I love Jet jaguar. My first exposure to Godzilla was the Showa era and while many people these days might see it as silly, it was the perfect intro to Godzilla for a kid. And still my favorite. Jet jaguar reminded me of Giant Robot in that he was friends with a kid. I assume you've seen this: czcams.com/video/Gl4degN00Ug/video.html

    • @AtomicSnackBar
      @AtomicSnackBar  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Right there with you, good sir. It's all about the Showa era for me. Even though I want to say Godzilla '85 was my first Godzilla movie, I have just never been able to get into dark and gritty Godzilla. I've tried, but I just like my Godzilla to be light and fun. Even the Heisei stuff was a bit too serious for me.
      Oddly enough, that really just applies to Godzilla. My favorite Kamen Rider is the darker stuff like the first season and the borderline horror movies from the 90s.
      I did see that trailer, but never got around to watching the full short. Sounds like I may have missed my chance.
      I do wonder with The Black Hole if a part of the disdain for it, even if just a tiny part, comes from a bias against the fact that it was Disney? But that was a very different time for the company. Just look at Something Wicked This Way Comes.

    Diamond Select have produced an incredible Maximilian figure, which should still be available. There are two versions out there, look for the one that contains an alternative head. The one with the eyes... Also, if you do a second list, it needs more Yul Brynner.

      It's interesting you mentioned that figure, Dave. I actually discovered it right after filming this video. And it was a good price too. But a week later when I had a little fun money, it had almost doubled in price. Which is odd, cause it had been out for years.
      And I don't want to give away any spoilers, but chances are extremely high that Yul will make the sequel list.

Then again, it's not uncommon to see the whole series get trashed, perhaps as pushback by fans of the nuBSG series. Okay. I've gotta say it. Shoe shine Dingaling looks like he's holding a roll of toilet paper. Spy Dingaling look s like he's flashing someone. And King Dingaling sounds like a seventies porn star. Just saying'.😆 Maximilian was the coolest and truly threatening robot since Gort. The sentry guard robots need to be on your next top five. Both the Black Hole and their animated feature the Black Cauldron are from the Roy Disney leadership period and darkly interesting attempts to find a less child like , more adult inclusive direction after Walt's passing and the ridicule they received after films like The Fox and the Hound. Hollywood is a mean place. I really like them both, although they're unsatisfying in some ways. I had forgotten that I wanted to see Super Inframan! On the list. Sorry, but Caroline Munroe in a leather bikini and boots? I don't know that I noticed anything else after seeing her. Yowza Yowza!😍😋 Jet Jaguar is the best part of that particular Godzilla entry. I can never get enough robots, my friend. Keep 'um comin' !

      Actually, King Dingaling did have a brief career in the toy robot adult film industry after the action figure money dried up. His story was much like Boogie Nights.....only robotic. With even more awesome Stan Bush music.
      I didn't know Black Hole was from the Roy Disney era. That's interesting. Too bad that didn't go on for longer. Cause some truly high quality stuff came out then.
      Caroline Munro's Star Crash look does kind of steal the thunder of pretty much everything else. I could probably do an episode on Top Caroline Munro looks. Between Stella Starr and Sinbad, she truly is iconic.
      And I will put my tinfoil hat on and do some robot thinking. Thanks for watching, Tony. Always a pleasure when you stop by the lounge.

      Here's some more hidden Disney history. Right after those late seventies power struggles, and the Don Bluth mutiny to start his own country, the Corporate types (vultures)moved in and pulled a coup.(hostile takeover. This was greedy eighties. The rise of the Yuppie.) In order to raise capital to restructure the company, they quietly opened 'Touchstone Pictures' in order to make adult(R rated)comedies without tarnishing the family friendly Disney brand name. The strategy worked and they used that lucrative market to rebuild their animation studio over time. They had long had their distribution company under Buena Vista so they could keep everything in-house and on the download. Sneaky little buggers. You'll not likely read that in any officially sanctioned Disney history. They also sold diseased blankets to the Lakota tribes in the late 1880s.😆😐 Anyyyyyway... More Caroline Munro? YESSSSS!!!! Another CZcamsr I subscribe to under Fredflix does nostalgia videos and did a 'vote for your favourite Monroe/Munro' video about 2 weeks ago. Caroline rocked the vote! She was also in a Hammer horror flick called Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter which is seriously cool and fun with a great soundtrack. More robots and more Caroline Munro please!

      @@tonysantiago255 That's really interesting. I'm not sure I knew that Touchstone was Disney owned. I know they did that same sort of thing with Hollywood Records though. Some of the artists that were signed to that label are really surprising.
      Speaking of the lovely Lady Munro, I'm sure you know this already, but she was almost Vampirella as well. It supposedly it fell through because she wouldn't do nudity. That is one of my most lamented of unmade films of all time. A Hammer Vampi with Caroline.

      @@tonysantiago255 It is a shame though that Don Bluth's country didn't work out. It would have been a nice place to live.
