It really was. I don't know if I mentioned it in the video, but I always like to imagine that his character in A Christmas Story is actually a retired Kolchak. And when he is "battling the furnace" it's actually just him up to his own tricks. I know the timelines don't add up, but it's still fun.

Just so you know, I'm something of an expert on 1960 & 1970s robots (at least the toy ones). According to my Mom I recieved a toy robot for my birthday every year since I was 1 year old. The first one was "Mr. Machine" in 1961. All of the classic ones followed: The tin ones that walked, "Robot Commando", "Big Lou", all of them. the last ones I remember getting, when I was about 14, were the "Zeroids". Remember them?

    • @AtomicSnackBar
      @AtomicSnackBar  Před měsícem

Ohhh man, now you are really talking my language. I'm a big toy person. I know of all the ones you mentioned except for Big Lou. I've used the commercials for Mr. Machine, Robot Commando, and the Zeriods on the channel before.
Speaking of, I took a daytrip down to Fort Meyers a couple of weeks ago. There was a small record store that actually had a pretty mint Robot Commando with the box. I didn't realize quite how big that guy was until I saw him in person.

    • @Jer-7007
      @Jer-7007 Před měsícem +1

@@AtomicSnackBar : Actually, I misspelled it. It's Big Loo, and he was about 4 feet tall (which is about as tall as I was when I got him). He looked kind of retro for a 1960s robot design, though. More like a 1930s Flash Gordon type design - with a bullet shaped head and riveted construction. But he could do, like, 5 or 6 different things (like shoot various projectiles and such). Anyway, I always liked Robot Commando better, because Big Loo looked too old fashioned for me.

Outstanding list, good sir! 🤖 Kolchak being a prequel to A Christmas Story is now my official headcanon 😆 And I’ve had an inexplicable fascination with Box for decades… frankly I’m a bit worried 😅
I’ll throw my robotic headgear into the ring with another contender too: 7-Zark-7 from _Battle of the Planets…_ a tad goofy-looking, and only added to the _Gatchaman_ footage to provide exposition and appeal to the newly-awakened R2D2 fans… but any robot able to successfully mack on the sultry Susan from Pluto is way cool in my book 😎

    • @AtomicSnackBar
      @AtomicSnackBar  Před rokem +1

So here is the thinking on that. After years of dealing with the supernatural and unexplained, Kolchak retires, gets married, and moves to the suburbs. But you see, old habits die hard. When he is down stairs "fighting with the furnace"......he is actually battling the forces of evil.
7-Zark-7 is a great choice. Fantastic, almost psychedelic R2 look going on there. I've been considering doing a Top Cartoon Robots list. But with the copyright claims on Japanese stuff so numerous, it kind of cuts down what I can use.
And I'll raise you...not a robot per se...and I actually had him on my Top 1970s Sci-fi Aliens list, but that's the Conductor from Galaxy Express 999.

All great choices Mr. Gray! Nice Kolchak callback. His shtick (besides the seersucker suit) was the "miniature" tape recorder he used for exposition and one of those horrible 110 pocket cameras that only ever produced blurry pictures. Bad choice for a reporter. "The Starlost" was a great concept that failed in its execution, just like every other generation ship story from Heinlein's "Universe" on. Thanks for your research, I learned many new things.
Yul Brynner, as you say, made a damn fine robot. Another sci-fi role of his, though lesser known, was in "The Ultimate Warrior" wherein he played a post-apocalyptic mercenary. Max Von Sydow bribed him with food, companionship and cigars.

    • @AtomicSnackBar

Kolchak was one of those shows that, much like Dark Shadows, was not only ahead of its time, but also set the stage for so much that was to follow. I was fortunate enough to have a friend that liked the show so much he bought me the boxset just so I'd watch it. I'm glad he did. And just think, had Kolchak taken place in the 80s, he could have used one of those talkboys from Home Alone. Really makes you think.
I'm not familiar with The Ultimate Warrior, but it sounds great. Looking into though, also sounds a bit rare. The DVD is rather pricy. I will keep an eye out though. Thanks for the tip, my luminous Nordic friend.

Why can I only give this 1 thumbs up? It deserves at least 200 per person. This is absolute solid kryptonite youtubing. Top notch - you are great, funny, entertaining, and informative - even to us geeks; who think we know things. Stone Cold, Blade Runner and Buck Rogers - right there is the source of eternal youth. I am wearing my newly bought Hawaiian shirt - and skeezy, I do look (so very happy). I always had a bit of a Ballou the Bear wonder-lust, but I'm a just too stressy and intense - but you need to take those steps to become what you want to be. My wardrobe is more like Mr Ben's wardrobe (did you have Mr Ben cartoon? You should look it up if not. That and Bod - for top quality children's entertainment) than a normal persons. I spent so much time trying to look tough because I'm not and don't want to be hurt - I'm 50 now, so maybe time to just smile, and be Ballou. 70's robots - Silent Running - or was that in the other part - I have a really bad memory. Again, great video - a re-post? Just great. Rob Grant - Colony, this is a really good book by half of the men that wrote Red Dwarf.

Welcome, my friend, to the club. We are happy to have you. And for more formal occasions, there is always the bowling shirt. Though I can tell you from much experience, those are not as easy to fit. The material doesn't drape, quite like most Hawaiian shirts.
I wasn't familiar with Mr. Benn, but I looked up an episode and skimmed through it. He was wearing a suit of armor in that one. So probably not what you meant, but then again. And nice pull with Ballou. I watched the heck out of TaleSpin as a lad.
And I know what you mean for sure. Even just ten years ago I had an almost biker look, believe it not. And before that, borderline glam rock. I could have passed for a member of Poison around 2007. But the day I realized I no longer felt the need to be "cool" everything changed.
But no, not a repost. Just visiting that old sci-fi robots well once again.
Thanks so much for watching, the support, and the thumbs ups in spirit.

@@AtomicSnackBar to be honest it was the westworld image that I thought I had seen on a previous post, rather than the actual content. I really enjoyed this vid. You should check out Tales of of the Gold Monkey - TaleSpin meets Casablanca with a bit of Indiana Jones - but kind of a 80s Buck Rogers vibe to it. For the record: you are very cool - at least I think so, but what the hell do I know - you are Buckaroo Bonzai cool - with a bit of Jack Burton. I think I'll wear a t-shirt under the shirt - with it open; I do like a t-shirt. I do enjoy bowling but its quite expensive and I'm bad at it - we don't have bowling teams here and that's ok because I'm not a sports person - I do like the Big Lebowski and Uncle Buck. I think Hawaiian is just friendly and relaxed and easy going - what I want to be, even if I'm not always. I do love cylons - 70s or 80s? had a cylon action figure - the one that was mostly black!? Did had lighty up parts and was very solid. never had the cylon action figure that was the same size as the Star Wars action figures though - had Adarma, Imperious Leader and Ovion in that size - also a couple of Black Hole figures. I can't remember the name of the robots in that - and it was surely 80s - but I really liked that.

And I do appreciate the kind words, my newly shirted friend. Perhaps "hip" was the word I was looking for. The day I gave being hip the raspberry and walked the other direction. But open is a good look at well. I do that ever now and then. Matter of fact, I'm rocking that look in my old Bikini movies collection video. Though I wouldn't recommend that one. The sound is dreadful.
Cylons would have been a great choice as well. And definitely 70s. I seem to recall I wanted to use them for the first part, but didn't for top secret clown reasons I can neither confirm, deny, or remember. But man, that Ovion figure was one of my most wanted toys as a kid. But being that it was a little before my time, I never ran across it in the wild.

Slim, is the government controlling our minds?
The great Christine McVie from Fleetwood Mac died recently, but before she did I played a few of her songs, during the holidays, for my relatives. There is a line in one of her songs, "As long as you follow", that just happened to resonate with me at the time. It goes "...yes I can live today, if you give me tomorrow.."
It seems to me that the television and movie age we grew up in may be one of the "wackiest" things in all of history. More consequential than the Renaissance or the discovery of DNA or the Interweb.
I can't tell you how many "thrilling" things I found to look forward to growing up. Yes there were boring things but the world I lived in was, if not personally exciting, vicariously exciting. Music, movies, technology, books, art, architecture, space travel. Wow, was there ever a comparable period in the history of the civilized world?
Just recently watched a Twilight Zone marathon on syfy. I mean the English had Shakespeare but...Rod Serling, Michael Crichton, Gene Roddenberry, Harlan Ellison? Come on!
It may be that this period of history is going to disappear. That the world will no longer be full of things to look forward to, and that may be a good thing or just a normal thing; but man I hope there comes along a new branch of artists and engineers that can keep it going.
We're born unknowing in this world and the "things that keep young men alive" are few and far between. For my part this part of the 20th and 21st century kept me interested.
I don't know how or why this screen age came to be, or who is responsible for it (congress?); but I sure do appreciate it.

Well, yeah. Of course they are. Thus the constant need for the tinfoil hat. Helps with alien invaders as well. Or so I've been told.
And it very well could be that we are old and have just seen it all, but I don't think that is the case. Things were absolutely more thrilling then. Not just because of their newness, but because they were there. And because you actually had to work for it a bit. Let's take good old fashion malls. Something that is sadly dying out. You had to drive to said mall. Walk around. And then discover. Seeing things probably didn't even know existed. Same with arcades. This world of the internet, spoilers and product reviews, has definitely robbed people of the joy of discovery.

Westworld is one of my favourite films. Watching Yul Brinner, he was very much the forerunner to the Terminator persona because he was blank faced and relentless. I recall that as part of the plot there were other worlds people could go to and one of them was Romeworld. It would have been interesting if they had made another in Romeworld.
I loved Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. It was funny but could be bitter-sweet at times because Buck was very much a man out of time, and he could be very lonely at times. Tweeky was funny and the disk that was shown was Dr Theopolis who was another persona and was very much a snooty intellectual who would berate Tweeky for his childish antics that were sometimes quite cheeky, courtesy of copying Buck. My husband very much liked Colonel Wilma Deering in her nice spandex catsuit.

Another excellent robotic entry to your channel, my friend. But then again, you can never have too many robots. Mr. Ring deserves every bit of the love and respect you have given him. But you sold Darren McGavin's brilliantly quirky, funny Karl Kolchak character as almost normal. Ask Editor Anthony Vincenzo( also played brilliantly by the great character actor Simon Oakland) and he'll tell you he was anything but. The humor in that series was so underappreciated. But again, I digress. Box! Yes! I remember watching Logan's Run over and over when it played at the Cine' Twin movie theater back in 76. I was an usher so we see the movies for free, but please! Avoid the recycled popcorn from the popcorn machine. The owner was a bit... tight with a buck, so they would bag the leftover popcorn in a trashbag and mix it with the fresh stuff the next day. You might potentially get a piece of popcorn that was pretty old. I can't remember who said it, but Roscoe Lee Brown had an inappropriate sense of humor and would regail anyone within earshot with dirty jokes and limericks between takes. In that booming, classically trained voice. I'd love to see a 'Box: The Unedited Version edition of Logan's Run. The mind boggles. Beautifully memorable shiny design that Box. And great dialogue: "Plankton from the Sea.. Fresh as Harvest Day. My Birds! My Birds!" Where do find those commercials?! The dude hawking stereo equipment is so classic 70s! From his mustachioed, hairy opened puka shirt to the leisure suit. And man did he have the patter down. Do you know where that store was? I haven't seen that much oak shelving since the 80s. When I perfect my Time Machine, I'm going shopping for some stereo equipment. Now, what did I do with my leisure suit? I only saw the first few episodes of The Star-Lost back in the day, but Canadian actor Keir Dulei ( I'm sure that's misspelled) must have been reborn as a Starchild only to end up lost in space yet again. Where's HAL when you need him? I never caught that robot, but yeah, very 50s design. Did her chest open up and spray machine gun fire too? The feature film version of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century is pretty enjoyable and was only released in theaters because of a the success of some tiny Space Opera franchise whose name escapes me at the moment. I did also get to work the Premiere that one at the Cine' Twin in beautious Hollywood, Florida back in the wayback. I think that one had some robots too...? Or were they androids? Tomato tomoto. Yul Brenner we Brilliant as the Gunslinger in Westworld! Probably the most memorable thing in a wonderfully unrated film. Written by the great Richard Matheson I believe. And that clip you used where he's running down the hallway toward the camera reminded me of Robert Patricks similar charging run from T2. But James Cameron would never rip off someone else's work. Unless it was Harlan Ellison, who wrote the classic Outer Limits episode: Soldier on which the Terminator was based. Mind your cats.😉 Swell job Slim.

This is quite true. It was Kolchak's charm, whit, and quirky way of being that made the show what it was. Had he been more straightlaced and by the book, I don't think it would nearly be the cult favorite it is. But, that being said, I couldn't let ol' Carl steal the show here from poor Mr. Ring. Not sure if it's a common occurrence, but I saw the series long before I ever saw the two movies. And seeing said movies changed my perspective on the show quite a bit.
Not sure if you were ever a Friends fan. But one of my favorite moments from the show is when Ross is talking about the "sexiest movie ever made". Of course, it was Logan's Run.
If you ever get that time machine working, you'll want to head straight to American Sound in Sacramento for all your stereo equipment needs. Might want to ask about some fashion advice as well.
But it begs the question.....is there ever a time in which you actually need HAL? Knowing the falling out the two of you had. Very sad story.
And I could be wrong, but I want to say that Westworld was actually written by Michael Crichton. Kind of his precursor to Jurassic Park. Ah yes, just went and checked. It was written and directed by Crichton. Speaking of Outer Limits, after I finish Twilight Zone the plan is to re-watch Lost in Space. But after that, I think it's time for an Outer Limits re-watch.

Westworld is a cult movie, but it's not really famous the way that other merchandised movies are, and of course today, everyone is more familiar with the TV show.
Doing a search for model kits, shows that apparently there were two different resin kits. One with the gunslinger standing by a portion of fence holding a gun, and another, less detailed figure of him standing with his hands on his belt. I'm really curious though if these kits were licensed, as they would have had to deal not only with not only whoever owns the rights to Westworld, but also Yul Brynner's estate in order to use his likeness. I seem to recall that when McFarlane included some Terminator II characters in their Movie Monsters line, the one of Arnold's terminator had enough of the flesh removed from the face that it no longer looked like Arnold because they couldn't secure the rights to use his likeness. I once saw blog posts by someone who took the head and re-sculpted it to look like Arnold.
BTW, the gunslinger replica turned up in an episode of the TV show. In one of the episodes (season 1 or 2) a character is going through a disused storeroom and it's standing against the wall. They didn't focus on it at all, but you can clearly see it.

Chris Carter's (creator of X-Files) showed today's creators how to handle existing genre IP (even IP that you aren't a steward of) by recognizing the contribution of Kolchak to X-Files and honoring Darren McGavin by giving him a great supporting role in X-Files. Too bad most creators didn't absorb the lesson. Speaking of burning your IP down the gunslinger appearance in Futureworld reflected the worst of studio marketing - my 12 year old self was so excited to see Futureworld after seeing Westworld especially the gunslinger. Then Brynner's role turned out to be a short fantasy romantic dream with the leading actress - I was not amused. This kind of reflects what happened to the Westworld TV show - high initial hopes but later very pedestrian and moving away from what made the movie (or series) cool.

Box was a cool eh robot-cyborg na robot & one that to me has much Dr. Who type influence in the way he looked. Now that i have looked i don't see that you have done any old Dr. Who stuff but if you do i am looking forward to watching & with that show you will need a longer clip or several of them as you know how many robots & alien creatures you have to choose from.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to cover any Dr. Who material. The one time I tried, they blocked my video. Not a claim, but a full on block where no one could view it. I've been gun-shy to try again ever since.
I appreciate you checking out all these older videos, Paul.

@@AtomicSnackBar Yea they won't allow much & no full episodes at all. I recorded many of them off PBS years ago when the ran them & one show i so far have not heard you mention called RED DWARF, a sci fi comedy from the BBC which does have a sort of quirky & funny as hell robot called Kryten . They don't run any of them these days, but it used to on every Saturday night. They won't let that show on YT either. Just bits & pieces. Know i can't see talking about these shows as that is not a copyright thing as long as you're not showing clips from the show but i can't see photos making any difference as we can see them on the Google image site easy. YT is very strange when it comes to vids . They were going to take mine off if i didn't click on age restrictions & you've heard them it's just music with zero negative bad vibes & heck, they are instrumentals & I've seen way worse things than yours & my channels. I am loving your channel so be prepared for some very positive feedback & some things you may learn from this ole man LOL !!! I also learn from films you know that i have not seen. Long live Monsters, Robots, Mad Scientists & good ole Rock n Roll. 🎸🔥

@@AtomicSnackBar Glad to have stumbled onto your little gold mine of info & those great old films we love so much. I think i spend much time just looking at all the cool stuff you have behind you in what i call a collection & i am not really one other than my guitars & what i do have come from when i a lad was. So, i don't know how folks get away with posting Dr. Who stuff but i do know they can't post an episode old or new. Tons of Dr. Who snippets is all i ever see on YT but YT seems to let them post stuff as long as it's interviews & just bits & pieces. It's OK I'm sure we both know our Dr. Who's at least all the old ones.

love the idea/look for the Scream'N Demons...for the kids raised on "Easy Rider"? this particular toy (tearing up the roads) must've given conservatives palpitations at the time. i guess was a little cynic at the age Buck Rogers (and Battlestar Galactica) came out...their robots looked good but really gave me the irks. the Tweaky toy looks good though! i don't suppose that name would stand today given its drug connotations...though the way Tweaky moves it could explain some. A little withdrawal today, Tweaky? Let's get you a fix...i mean get you fixed! Did the Brit series "Blakes 7" have any worthy robots?...i seem to remember some sort of computer brain in what looked like a plastic fish tank... So Not a lot of movement from that guy!

That is an interesting point there. I hadn't though of any drug connotations. Though I guess I have heard the tweaker before. I was thinking he wouldn't stand today simply because of his less than appropriate habits. That Tweaky, he was a wild one.
On but off topic, I re-watched Easy Rider not too long ago. That, as I am sure was the case with many, was my first biker movie. Unless you count 1990: The Bronx Warriors.

@@AtomicSnackBar and speaking of wild one "The Wild One" with Marlon Brando from 1953 pre-dated Easy Rider by about 16 years to be the first significant biker movie, But of interest to fans of "extra genre bikers", "Werewolves on Wheels is a bit of silly fun as is "Psychomania" from 1973

@@AtomicSnackBar "biker movies" is such a hard topic to define...like a genre unto itself. is it road movie, buddy movie, crime movie?...all of the above? i can see why werewolves with a pack mentality might be a good horror/fantasy aspect to any biker flick. Werewolves are certainly depicted as the veritable opposite in style to vampires. Werewolves seem to be op-shop army khakis and raincoats where vamps are all Armani and black velvet. There's been no letup in actual biker culture and as I've never seen "Sons of Anarchy" series I'm not up with the latest fictionalisations. I think a biker movie came out at the cinemas in the last month. I recall Larry Bishops "Hellride" being enjoyable. Like any genre within a genre film you can take any sub-culture aesthetic and apply it to just about any story. with Biker movies if you want it to be a success you've obviously gotta make it appeal to more than those who live that life, but then perhaps if you're compromising all the things that make the biker life attractive to some and horribly anti-social to others all you're left with is motorcycles and leather jackets.
