    "Metal hurlant" literally means "screaming metal" in French (the English title is rather misleading). Personally I would've included the robot spiders from Runaway (1984) with Tom Selleck. Runaway was released in the same year as The Terminator and was unfortunately overshadowed by the success of that movie. Imo it's one of the most underrated sci-fi movies of the Eighties.

      Screaming Metal is a pretty good title as well. And you know, Runaway almost made the list. Just barely missed it. But if I do a sequel episode, it'll definitely be on the list. I've often said, Gene Simmons is a great actor. I wish he had done more.

      I think it depends on how it started life. For example, the aforementioned Hector. He is a robot that had brain tissue added. So I guess technically a cyborg, but I still count him as a robot.

    Alright, one day into changing places to live and hopefully starting my own channel in the coming weeks, Sterling delivers on two of my favorite subjects: the 1980s, and robots, the BEST part of waking up.
    Hector, and Saturn 3 as a whole, was a weird experience, both in appearance and execution. I mean, the robot looks like it has the mechanical head of the Grundlefly, and Harvey K is sounding like some kind of Galactic Imperial, it was all as noticeable as the mini- donut on Kirk Douglas' chin, but that made it all the more memorable, along with that 'makes you think' ending. Some THING is wrong on Saturn-3, that's for sure. ED-209, an all-timer and definitely more machine than man, hearing about the visual inspiration is pretty cool, with that blank conical head that he has, and the emotional LACK of emotions in its bestial countenance, we're all VERY lucky they turned out to not be as dangerous as they appeared, or as Dick Jones made them sound. I always liked how realistic they looked as the standing models, like that thing COULD start walking any second now, if it didn't get a toe caught in a gopher hole or something.. Robot's one lucky tin can, if you ask me, he is a diminutive and kinda silly-looking machine, but since he is the brains of the outfit, I guess he knows to make a move on the opportunity that falls into his ship... I do like his hand flying off in that later scene, none of us guys ever have 100 percent flawless game, even as a robot. Still though, GOOD Nyborg~
    Data's got that same niche appeal of a movie monster and an alien, rolled up in a mechanical porcetta, just always trying to be like the hu-man, to live like the hu-man, not the ro-man. He's well-executed in the show, but I only first new of him because of First Contact, I was a kid in the 90s, he was the robot that said 'oh SHIT!' later in the movie, I'd buy THAT for a dollar! And yeah, cat man, fish out of water, filled a Spock-shaped abyss in a somewhat doughty series at times, you gotta have the unique character out in a cast of ac-tors like that. The Bubo is most DEFINITELY a robot, a sentient mechanical artifice that reacts to its given interpretation of a situation, plus you can hear the little complicated mechanisms in that thing. It also led to one of my favorite gags in The Venture Bros, from one of my favorite _characters,_ but I won't say.. hooo~ the T800-m101 CYBERDYNE is a robot of distinction but also, I mean.. aside from the disguised one they sent thru time, the general fund of the Endos are pretty rank and file, I think their distant ancestors can be seen today, slicing people to pieces on the front in Helldivers 2.
    We are simpatico on your choices for the top pick, that is one of the all-time robots of merit right there, he served his purpose well, grew to be more than the sum of his parts (figuratively and literally) developed a number of modes and malfunctions, like Kyrten of Red Dwarf (who is ABSENT FROM THIS LIST, I might add, but can be more of a 90s character) before him, and has a wide range of talents that do NOTHING in furthering the safety and function of the ship, but everything to do with keeping the human subject mentally sound. Pompous, egotistical, sarcastic, but also overly-sensitive and easily sent into bouts of shapeless rage, that's just the kinda little fireplug I'd want on my Satellite. Sterling, you effulgent jiffypop cowboy, that's a good day's tubin' of you, see YOU around the compound~

    • @AtomicSnackBar
      @AtomicSnackBar  Před 5 měsíci +1

      You bring up an excellent point about Data. I had never considered that. He is kind of a best of both worlds, alien and robot. He has the look of an alien, the insides of bot, a good combo of both.
      Kryten is a pretty spiffy bot himself. But I only first saw Red Dwarf last year. So no sentimental value there, unlike most of the others. He would be a really good choice for a sequel episode, if I can find the footage.
      And I must say, good sir, that is the first time I've ever been called a effulgent jiffypop cowboy. Dastardly jiffypop cowboy, sure. Curmudgeonly jiffypop cowboy, three times last week. But effulgent jiffypop cowboy is brand new.

    Did not know that "Heavy Metal" the magazine was originally French. Now that i think about it I've never seen another American "comic magazine" like it. I do remember "Wicked Wanda" from Playboy, but that was tame (though very well drawn) compared to the magazine. Very unique. We are prudes here in the states, which ...I'm strangely impressed by. We want our smut wholesome and healthy, not filthy like them Eurapeans!
    Must say i'm torn by MST3k, hated the show, loved the movies. So many strange and lost movies that did not need shade cast on them. Freak that i am i found the laugh trak annoying, because i actually wanted to watch those movies. Uninterrupted.
    Final point. Android? Cyborg? Robot? Replicant from PKD's Blade Runner? A.I.? I dare anyone to come up with a definitive taxonomy of these ..artificial causations. Notice i say causation not creation.
    Is Frankenstein's monster a robot? Is a Dalek a cyborg? If so why do they all act the same way? What exactly is an android? I am confused 😕.
    Nevermind that that is my defunct Natural state. I think we need another fantastic, "Atomic Snack Bar" submission on the definitive taxonomy of artificial causations. Is Tom Servo a robot or a puppet?

    • @AtomicSnackBar
      @AtomicSnackBar  Před 5 měsíci +3

      There's a really good American comic in a similar vein to Heavy Metal called Star Reach that ran from '74 to '79. Really quite good with some great art by folks like Jim Starlin and Barry Windsor-Smith. Still fairly easy to get ahold of as well.
      I am as well torn with MST3K. I take major issue with many of the films they choose to riff and the negative reputation they've single handedly cast upon said films. But at the same time, I like the characters and they have, in a way, breathed life into a lot of films that may have been forgotten.
      My definition of a robot is pretty simple. A mechanical being, made by science, that was never living as an organic. They can have organics added to them, like Hector. Kind of a reverse cyborg. But if they started out a living organic, not a robot. As to androids, if I recall correctly, that distinction is given to robots that are made to appear human. All androids are robots but not all robots are androids.
      And replicants are just man-made beings. Kind of like clones. Sorta.

    I actually don't like those guys from MST3K and there's a funny reason why.
    Several years ago I handled a lot of the social media for Famous Monsters of Filmland and I did a very popular daily interactive game where I pitted 2 fictional characters against each other and people voted by either liking or loving the post and the winner was carried on to the next round for 12 rounds just like in boxing and the winner at the end was crowned the champion.
    It would be really random stuff like for example the standout was probably Godzilla vs The Monster From The ID in Forbidden Planet.
    There was a lot of arguing over who would win but everyone knows the Monster From The ID is no match for Godzilla or anyone lol No matter how much you love the G Man.
    How in the hell can Godzilla beat something powered by the imagination that can simply imagine him being snuffed lol
    But anyway, I had Crow on there for a time and they found out about it and they had these fans who would just go on there to make fun of everything else and to vote for Crow no matter what. So they basically ruined it because they just wanted to make sure he won no matter what and there would be a huge influx everytime he was to be voted for. So eventually I got rid of him but they annoyed the other fans so much that I never included another MST3K character ever again and when they got back their own medicine and their show got ragged on by the legions of monster fans they acted hurt and insulted and acted like big friggin babies about it.
    lol
    I had several interactions with them one on one and they sort of pissed me off. Because they could dish it out but they sure couldn't take it.
    It was the typical story of people like that.
    They like to give it but when it comes to getting it back they just cannot stand it at all lol
    !@#$ those !@#$suck@#$ lol But then again what do you expect from some !@#clown who just sits and blabs through movies and tries to make themselves feel big and others small. It doesn't really take much talent to do that. It makes sense that they would be rather sensitive when they got picked on back doesn't it. lol

      That's another really neat looking robot, the one from Star Blazers. If it wasn't so risky using Japanese footage, an episode of classic anime bots would be pretty spiffy.
