    Growing up most of these Sword & Sandle flicks we watched were the B&W ones with Hercules played by both Steve Reeves & Peter Lupus which that one was in was in color & he ended up on Mission Impossible. All fun & 1960s. I have one on DVD with Peter & the lovely Helga Line who was a great Horror actress & one of the worlds drop dead gorgeous Ladys & one deadly & mean gals when she plays her horror roles, even meaner than the late great Ingrid Pitt. Only one woman was her equal & that was Barbara Steele.

She did some sexy as heck comedy I've only seen a few episodes of called Allo Allo from the BBC. One talented & beautiful lady in her day. It may not be your cup of Tea but i have Barbara Steele's last film from 2012 called The Butterfly Room, EVIL as EVIL gets & she plays her role like the ultimate pro she is & trust me this film has one hell of an ending well deserved for her. Some minor trivia for you, when they did the film The Mask of Satan aka Black Sunday, they spelled her name wrong. They spelled it as Steel when it's Steele & when the American version Black Sunday was released, they fixed that & made it Steele . Yea we pay attention best we can. Beastmaster - only seen the first one. Sorry, I would expect more from myself - but they kind of edge the time, thing for me - I like mine, European, cheap - and full of unfounded hope. Mythica series lacks in many of these points but has 5 - that might help to illustrate my point.

    Let's not get confused. "It conquered the world" is not "the monster that challenged the world". Who knew Lee Van Cleef got his start in monster movies?! "It conquered the world" and "the Beast from 20000 fathoms". This makes him a better actor than Clint Eastwood, in my opinion. Too bad he didnt also act in melodramas, that would have placed him up there with Richard Carlson.
    Creatures, monsters, beasts, mutants. The words bring back a vague pleasantry of self-induced fear, aided and abetted by true artists. The true source of these creations i assume would be the hybridization of dinosaurs; mythological creatures; bugs 🐛 ; and sea animals.
    Millicent Patrick? Was she self taught? College or art school trained? Very interesting.
    Last thought, there is a vague, but strangely reminiscent resemblance to the tree creature from "it came from hell" to the creature from "it conquered the world".

    • @AtomicSnackBar
      @AtomicSnackBar  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Funny you say that, because I am a huge fan of both of those creatures. And for the longest time, I would have to double check which title went to which film. Odd too, The "Monster" That Challenged the World was multiple giant molluscs. So it should have been the Monsters That Challenged the World. Had that been the case, the confusion would have been far less.
      As to the talented Mrs. Patrick's background, she attended the Chouinard Art Institute which would eventually become the California Institute of the Arts. She was also one of the first female animators at Disney and worked on Fantasia.
      If I had to guess, I would say more so that the creature from From Hell it Came was a distant cousin of the alien from I Married a Monster from Outer Space.

    "Hearts in Armor", without those two beautiful leading ladies I don't think the film would be as engrossing. Great armor not withstanding, the story seems disjointed. Like a song with some great parts that weren't capitalized on. Remake maybe?
    Can't help but mention the swordplay. Japanese films have great stylized swordplay. No film in this category though has ever captured the gory description of swordplay in the literature. That includes the Conan the Barbarian movie.
    There is no flair in the literature. The savagery of swordplay has never been captured in a live action movie. Perhaps a little in some anime.
    There is no parrying in S&S. No feinting. Just brutal, explosive, swinging, and berserk, powerful, body motion. If your skull or ribs or legs or arms are hit your armor will take the brunt of the force. When you hit brains are splattered, ribs are crushed and armor is caved in. Shields don't prevent your forearms from being shattered or your bones from being split.
    The sword is more a club than a blade, and armor not for protection as for comfort in motion and luck.

      A true point. The different genres of film that include a lot of swordplay do certainly have their own styles of it. I like my action in short, quick bursts. So I tend to lean, with a few expectations, towards the Sword & Sorcery style over drawn out sword fights between two individuals. A great example of that in Japanese cinema is the Zatoichi films. I do get a big kick out of it when Ichi is surrounded and within 10 seconds, his opinions are gone.
